The biggest reason why Gus did so well in 2013 was he exploited the rules to limit subs by the defense. He ran a fast-paced offense, but he also ran the players up to the LOS every play, then called the play in from the sidelines. This forced the defense to stay on the field and they couldn't sub. Often the defense, especially on the DL, uses situational groups, they might put in a couple of 300 pounders at DT on 3rd and 1, then sub them out if the offense gets a first down. But aubarn would get a first down then immediately run up to the line so the winded DL couldn't get out of the game. It forced the defense to either burn a timeout, or get burned for a big gain.
Or start faking injuries like Bieliema did at Arkansas LOL Gus also was a big fan of the 'pop' pass. He was also a big fan of using it illegally, so was Ole Miss at this time (he and Hugh are big buds). He beat Alabama with it in 2013, he rolled Nick Marshall out, all the OL went downfield to block, then the DB covering the WR comes up to tackle Marshall, and he throws the ball to the wide open WR. The DB played the ball correctly, since the OL was downfield, it was a running play. But Gus knew that the refs likely wouldn't be able to watch all the OL and measure how far they were downfield.
Rule changes have addressed both his use of pop passes and trying to keep the other team from subbing. Take away his high school gimmicks and Gus is another Less Miles at best.
