Gator Spring sports beginning soon...

UF baseball team pounded out 20 hits and beat LSU 16-9 in the opening game of their series. gators scored 6 runs in the 2nd inning and were never really challenged after that. Tommy Mace pitched 7 innings, giving up 4 runs on 10 hits, 2 walks and 9 K's. Hunter Ruth threw .2 innings and gave up 2 runs. Kirby McMullen tossed 1.1 innings and gave up 3 runs. At the plate, Brady Smith went 4-4, 4 RBI's and a HR; Brady McConnell & Cory Acton gad 3-run homers; Austin Langworthy went 3-4 with a HR; Wil Dalton and Jordan Butler went 3-6; Calilao and Young had 2 hits each. UF played errorless ball, Mace was solid, but not great and our 2 bullpen guys gave up 5 runs the last 2 innings. But the offense was incredible.

Offense played that way early in the season, but we're starting to see it in the SEC. If Langworthy, Smith and Dalton hit, then it is a really dangerous lineup. I think they need to get a lot of innings from their starters, because the bullpen has been pretty hit or miss. Not sure how many innings Butler will get there, but he has really sparked the lineup. And we will be lucky to be an average defensive team by the end of the year. This would be a huge series to win, because we could probably win 2 out of our last three SEC series and host a regional. Once we get to postseason, hopefully we've found one other solid starter to go with Mace and we just do our thing.

Last night was the 1st SEC road win for the Gators since May 12, 2018. Hoping Leftwich will be back to form after that blister injury that kept him out of the rotation for a couple of weeks. And I agree that if Langworthy, Dalton & Smith get back to hitting like they did last year and the young guys keep it up, we could score a lot of runs down the stretch. But it's all going to come down to pitching. Our bullpen has been atrocious and the weekend starters have been inconsistent.

Funny how Butler, along with Mace, were probably the two guys you have most confidence in on the staff. And he ends up pitching bad, but being our best hitter in SEC play. If he keeps hitting like this, he can never come out of the lineup. Interesting to see how many innings he gets out of the bullpen, if any, the rest of the way. Sully sounded like he thought they were figuring things out. The team is so young that if they are close to .500 in the SEC you know they can play tough ball and will be a tough out in the post season.

Agree. Butler is needed as a reliable lefty out of the bullpen, but just hasn't been that guy so far. Maldanado will be back in the lineup once his shoulder is cleared. Guaranteed. Announcers sounded like it might be tonight or tomorrow. Butler can't play anywhere but 1st and he's not as good there as Calilao. So if O'Sullivan wants to keep Butler in the lineup, he would go to 1st, Calilao would go to RF where he's played several times. But then who goes to the bench, Dalton or Fabian? Dalton has hit the last 2 games, but is still only at .244 with only 18 RBI's, 15 walks and 26 K's. Fabian is a great centerfielder hitting .256 with 22 RBI's and leading the team in walks with 22 and strikeouts with 33. Interesting dilemma for the coach.

Gator softball drops the opener of their series with Alabama, 3-1, as freshman Montata Fouts outdueled Kelly Barnhill. UF got 2 hits on the day to go with 5 walks, but only got 1 clutch at bat when Lindamana doubled home Lorenz in the first. Lorenz drew 3 walks and Jade Caraway got the only other Gator hit. Barnhill gave up 2, 2-out hits after 2 earlier walks in the 3rd inning to put Bama up 2-1. The Tide added another run in the 5th on a Hannah Adams error with 2 outs and runners on 1st and 3rd. Barnhill was taken out after 5.1 innings. Katie Chronister threw 1.1 innings with only 1 walk allowed and Natalie Lugo pitched .1 innings, giving up nothing. 2nd game will start around 9 pm with Elizabeth Hightower on the mound for Florida.

Game 2 vs LSU is ugly. Giving away outs and runs on defense, and we’ve got one pitcher who can get an out and he pitched last night. Hopefully we get the rubber game tomorrow.

These guys are just butchers in the field.
Reese is having a terrible year for being a senior captain. Feel sorry for the guy, as he was solid as a junior. The difference between their freshman pitcher and our 2 freshmen pitchers who threw first is amazing. Their guy had 12 k's and 1 run allowed in 5.1 innings. Our 2 guys got blasted fro 10 runs on 13 hits in 5 innings.

Meanwhile our softball team got swept by Alabama in a doubleheader today, losing the 1st game 3-1, the 2nd game 6-1. We managed 2 hits in each game. Junior transfer from Hofstra, Sarah Cornell, shut the Gator bats down just like their freshman pitcher did in the 1st game. Elizabeth Hightower pitched OK for Florida, giving up 2 runs in her 5 innings of work. Natalie Lugo gave up 4 runs in the 2 innings she worked. Florida's lone hits came on a Lorenz HR and a Lindaman single. We had plenty of baserunners, as the Bama pitcher walked 8, but 9 k's and the inability to hit with runners on base killed us again. UF drops to 37-11 on the season, 9-8 in the SEC as we are virtually eliminated from a chance at repeating as SEC champs. Alabama takes sole possession of 1st place in the conference, moving to 44-4, 13-4 in the SEC. We are now tied with Missouri for 5th place in the SEC with 7 more conference games left.

  • Florida is the nation's only team to claim a NCAA Individual title each of the last nine season. This was the Gators' 16th win in that span.
  • Every floor mark for Boren in 2019 was a 9.9 or better. This was her sixth floor title of the season and the 17thof her Gator career.

Florida softball got swept at home in a 3-game series for the 1st time in 8 years, losing today to Alabama 3-0. Kelly Barnhill lost her 2nd game in 2 days, dropping her record on the season to 25-8, as the Gators fell to 37-12, 9-9 in the SEC. Barnhill threw 113 pitches Wednesday night against FSU, 113 more in the 1st Bama game yesterday and 114 more today. UF outhit Alabama 7-5, but stranded 9 runners, as they failed to get a hit this series with runners in scoring position. The announcers said the Gators lead the SEC in the number of runners gotten on base, but are dead last in the league in batting average with runners in scoring position and with runners on base, as well as batting average with 2 outs and runners on. UF has only 2 batters hitting above .300, Lorenz at around .415 and Lindaman at around .365. They've pretty much lost their chance to get a top 8 seed in the NCAA tournament and need to win their next 2 series against Auburn & Mississippi St. if they want to be guaranteed of hosting a regional.

Good for Boren. She's been a great Gator. However, I can't be too excited since it was her fall off the beam in the NCAA Regionals that played a big role in the TEAM not making it to the NCAA Championships. I'm more about the team titles than the individual ones - but good for her.

The UF lacrosse team won their 7th straight game today with a 16-5 clubbing of UConn, improving their record to 10-6, 4-0 in the AAC. They finish the regular season next Saturday at noon against Cincinnati.

While the Big 12 doesn't have the quality of depth in softball as the SEC or the PAC-12, Oklahoma probably has the best softball team in America once again. I don't see the SEC having a serious contender for the national title this year, although 1-3 teams will probably makes the WCWS. The Sooners, UCLA, FSU, Washington are probably my Top 4 with the best chance of winning it all. Someone else could get hot, but those 4 have the best combination of pitching, hitting and defense IMO.

https://floridagators.com/news/2019...not-your-prototypical-player-or-freshman.aspx
The article on tennis player Sam Riffice is very timely because right now UF is in a dogfight with Tennessee in the SEC tournament semifinals. Gators lost the doubles point, meaning they needed to win 4 out of the 6 singles matches to win the match. UF has won at #1, #5 & #6 and has lost at #3. So the Gators are up 3-2 with 2 matches in play. Andy Andrade is losing in the 3rd and deciding set to the UT guy at #4, but Rifface is winning in his 3rd set against UT at #2, 6-3, 3-6, 3-1. If Rifface hold on the Gators advance to the SEC championship match tomorrow against 21-3 Mississippi St. and need to win the tournament to get their best possible seed in the NCAA tournament.

#3 UF Tennis was upset in the SEC tournament semifinals on their home courts, dropping the final 2 singles matches by identical 3rd set 5-7 scores to lose the match 4-3 in upset fashion to #14 Tennessee, whom they beat handily a few weeks ago. Gators finish the season 21-3, after going a perfect 12-0 in the SEC during the regular season and will await their seeding and pairing for the NCAA tournament. The first and 2nd rounds will be May 4 & 5 at various campus sites and Florida should definitely be a host. The Round of 16 is at campus sites on May 11 and the NCAA quarters, semis and finals will be May 16-19 at Lake Nona, FL.

Re: baseball. Pitching is unimaginably bad. I mean they cannot get anyone out.
The absolute worst pitching staff in the O'Sullivan era for sure, and probably for several season prior to his arrival. You expect some freshmen to be inconsistent, but the veterans aren't any good either. Really awful.

But the weird thing is all these kids were big recruits. Some of them pitched well last year. It’s just an out of nowhere collapse in 2019. Particularly odd because you know Sully handles young arms better than anybody.

Tommy Mace just took a line drive off his forehead that deflected all the way to right field in the Top of the 5th. He's out of the game with the score tied 4-4. Mace walked off the field and announcers said it may not be as bad as it looked. Gators have blown a 4-0 lead and now it's up to our pitiful bullpen.

Kelly Barnhill threw a no-hitter, Amanda Lorenz slugged a 3-run HR and Jamie Hoover hit a 2-run HR, as #10 Gator softball opened their weekend series at Auburn with a 7-0 win. Barnhill had 10 K's and 3 walks, the Gators played errorless ball, with Reynoso & Caraway chipping in with 2 hits each. Barnhill passes Stacey Nelson to become the career strikeout leading at UF.

UF baseball wins Friday night over hapless Kentucky 10-8. Nelson Maldanado had a 3-run HR and a 2-run Double, Wil Dalton had a 2 run HR and sac fly RBI and Brady McConnell led off the bottom of the 1st with a HR, as the Gators pounded out 13 hits. On the down side, Tommy Mace got knocked out with a line drive off the head in the 5th inning, Butler and Scott were ineffective in relief and the defense made 3 errors that accounted for 4 unearned runs. Nolan Crisp got he last 5 outs unscathed to pick up a save.

In a match to determine the AAC regular season title, UF Women's Lacrosse (11-6, 5-0) blasted Cincinnati (11-6, 4-1) at home 25-6. By Amanda O'Leary standards, this has been a down year. They came into the season with 11 seniors and a #4 ranking. But they only went 2-6 vs. ranked teams, losing several of those in the last couple of minutes. They have won 8 straight matches and are still ranked #17, #12 RPI and could cause some trouble in the NCAA tournament, as they are experienced and playing their best lacrosse down the stretch.

Gators take the softball series with Auburn 2-1 by winning today 6-1 behind a Barnhill 2 hitter with 10 K's. Jordan Roberts hit a grand slam in the 1st inning to set the tone. UF is on the border of being a Top 8 national seed. Although a down year by Tim Walton standards, they are still very good and Kelly Barnhill is one of the greatest college pitchers of all time and Amanda Lorenz is one of the greatest position players of all time. Going to need more support from other teammates if they're going to do anything in the post season. After 4 straight regular season SEC titles, they were due for a little bit of an off year. Still haven't lost to an unranked team and have more wins against ranked teams than anybody else.

It's interesting that nail1998 constantly touts Oklahoma's success and higher current ranking than Florida in the 2-3 sports in which they excel, especially softball and gymnastics. That's fine to be proud of your school. But to compare Oklahoma's athletic program to Florida's, even alluding to comparison, is ludicrous. It's not even a competition, as Florida has finished in the Top 10 EVERY year they've had a Director's Cup (the ONLY school to do so), usually in the Top 5, while Oklahoma hardly ever sniffs the Top 20. Right now, in a down year by Gator standards, we sit at #10, while the Sooners are #41. In fact Texas has the Big 12's highest ranking at #13, followed by Iowa State at #40.
