Gator Spring sports beginning soon...

Gator softball run ruled Arkansas today 9-0 in 5 innings to improve to 31-9, 5-6 in the SEC. Freshman Elizabeth Hightower tossed a 3 hitter with 6 K's to 2-0 on the year with a 1.44 ERA. Kendyl Lindaman blasted her 13 HR in the 1st innings and ran her RBI total to 43. Amanda Lorenz and Jamie Hoover also homered for the Gators.

Baseball game has resumed, but it's not good news for the gators. Christian Scoot had started the game and was on the mound when the rains came, but had 2 runners on and nobody out with an 8-3 lead. After the delay Scott walked the 1st batter he faced and was replaced by Nolan Crisp, who walked the 1st 2 batters he faced. Bases are loaded, still nobody out and the score is 8-5. Florida had an 8-0 lead going to the bottom of the 4th. Now Crisp has given up a 2 run double to cut the lead to 8-7. Runners on 2nd & 3rd, nobody out.

Gator baseball drops to 21-13, 4-8 in the SEC, blowing an 8-0 lead and losing to Ole Miss 12-10. Both teams had 12 hits, but 5 walks, 2 errors, a hit by pitch, a wild pitch and 3 balks gave Ole Miss the advantage. An 8 run 5th inning for Ole Miss really did it where 2 Gator pitchers gave up 6 hits, 3 straight walks and an error thrown in.

I can’t believe they lost that lead. Pitching is just not there this year, it looks like.

UF softball completed a sweep of Arkansas with a 3-1 over the Hogs this afternoon. Kelly Barnhill tossed a 2-hitter with 8 K's to improve her record to 21-5. All 3 Gator runs were unearned, as Amanda Lorenz had 2 RBI's. Arkansas pitcher Autumn Stormes lost the Friday & Sunday games, giving up 3 runs in each game, ALL unearned. For the year Lorenz & Lindaman are batting .400 with 22 home runs between them, while the rest of the Gator roster is hitting .256 with 20 home runs. UF improves their record to 32-9, 6-6 in the SEC, but their RPI rankiing is 9th in the country, as they have played one of the most difficult schedules out there. All 9 losses are to ranked opponents and they have, I believe 12 wins over ranked opponents.

Florida's #2 Men's Tennis team improved to 19-2, 11-0 in the SEC by whipping Auburn 6-1 this afternoon. The Gators finish up regular season play next Sunday by hosting #18 South Carolina.

Here are some baseball facts: Team fielding percentage is .969, with 39 errors, 10 passed balls and only 4 runners caught stealing, with 31 unearned runs allowed. Team ERA is now 4.74 (7.41 in SEC games!!), batting average against is .262. 113 walks, 36 hit by pitch and 25 wild pitches. 308 hits allowed in 298 innings, including 60 doubles and 34 home runs. Only 4 pitchers have ERA's of under 4.0 - Langworthy (3.1 innings, 0.000 ERA), Luethje (14 innings, 1.93 ERA), Armstrong (10 innings, 2.70 ERA) and Scott (25 innings 3.60 ERA).

The hitting is pretty good, with a .289 team batting average, 246 runs in 34 games, 38 HR's, 209 RBI's. We do have 269 strikeouts, which is high. It's the pitching and defense that is killing us and especially against good teams we just don't match up. Lots of work to do.

AUBURN, Ala. – With Men's Tennis 6-1 win over Auburn on Sunday afternoon, Florida secured at least part of the SEC regular season title. For the first time since 2005, the Gators are 11-0 in the league action and Sunday's match with South Carolina will determine the championship standings. With a win over the Gamecocks, Florida would be the sole winner of the regular season title. A loss would create a tie at the top of the standings based on record, resulting in co-champions.

Softball news - Gators moved up to #6 in the latest rankings after their sweep of Arkansas. Pitcher Elizabeth Hightower was just named Freshman of the Week. UF at 32-9, currently holds a 12-9 record vs. Top 25 competition and the 12 wins leads the nation, with 7 more Top 25 games left on their regular season schedule. Kelly Barnhill is 3rd in the nation with 218 K's and her career total of 1068 strikeouts is just 48 short of tying Gator great Stacey Nelson for most all time at UF. Barnhill & Amanda Lorenz were named as Top 10 Finalists for the Senior Class award, the 1st time in program history that 2 UF seniors have made the Top 10 list in the same season.

With Fall & Winter sports results all in and calculated, the 4/4/19 Director's Cup Standing have Florida ranked #10, the highest ranking among SEC schools. Stanford, Penn St., Wisconsin, Michigan, Texas, Virginia, Minnesota, Duke & Ohio St. are ahead of us right now, but with the strength of our spring sports (although maybe not quite as strong in recent years), we'll move up when the final tabulations are done. Here's the link:

UF baseball sweeps the season series with FSU, their 11th straight win against the Noles, dropping Mike Martin's career record against UF to 76-77. Gators got excellent pitching from David Leuthje (4), Justin Alintoff (2) and Ben Specht (3), as they scattered 8 hits to win 3-1. Gators got an unearned run in the 4th, then a 2-out, 2 run pitch hit triple from Kirby McMullen in the top of the 9th to win the game. Gators now 22-13, FSU 19-13.

Maybe we should move our midweek guys to weekend starters...especially on the road.
Mace had a bad game vs. Ole Miss, but has been pretty good otherwise. Dyson needs to be taken out of the weekend rotation because he never goes deep into the game and taxes our bullpen big time. Leftwich was decent until he had the blister issue. That hurt him his last 2 starts and then he missed last weekend. Agree that we need to go with the few guys who have been successful. Pitching has been a real problem for us this year - very unusual for an O'Sullivan team.

Florida hosts South Carolina for a Thursday - Saturday series. Both teams have underperformed so far this year, with Florida at 22-13, 4-8 SEC, South Carolina 20-13, 3-9 SEC. Pitching matchups have been announced for the first two games. Thursday's game, 7:30 on ESPNU, will have Tommy Mace (5-3, 4.26 ERA) vs. Reid Morgan (3-1, 2.60 ERA). Friday's game, 6:30 on SEC+, will have Christian Scott (3-1, 3.60 ERA) vs. Cam Tringali (1-0, 3.03 ERA). Important series for both teams as they try to climb to the middle of the SEC standings.

Florida softball improved to 33-9 tonight with a 1-0 win over South Florida. Kelly Barnhill threw a 1 hitter, recording 11 K's, running her her record to 22-6. The Gators had been no hit through 5 innings, but pinch hitter Cheyenne Lindsay led of the bottom of the 6th with a single, advanced to 2nd on a 1 out walk to Lorenz and moved to 3rd when she beat an attempted force at 3rd on a deep grounder to SS from Lindaman. Lindsay scored on a sac fly from Reynoso for the only run of the game. UF travels to College Station for a weekend series with 25-15, 3-9 Texas A&M.

Gators win Game 1 of their weekend baseball series with a 9-5 win over South Carolina. A big 6 run 3rd inning gave Tommy Mace a big cushion and he pitched through the 6th. Gators added a run in the 5th and 2 more in the 8th, but the bullpen was shaky again in closing out the win.

UF Women's Tennis played their 11th straight match against a ranked opponent today, upsetting #14 Michigan 4-3 in a nail biter, to improve their record to 11-9. They wrap up their SEC season Saturday morning against #5 South Carolina.

Meanwhile, UF's #17 lacrosse team knocked off a very good 10-3 Jacksonville U team 19-13 to improve their record to 8-6. This completes UF's non-conference schedule,as they are 2-0 in the AAC, with their 3 remaining games all in the conference, vs. East Carolina, UConn and Cincinnati.

Baseball team needs to get it going...
Pitching is really subpar by Gator standards. Worst ERA in the SEC and even worse than that against SEC teams - over 7. Even though we won last night, our pitchers walked 8, hit 2 more, threw 4 wild pitches and I think the SC leadoff hitters reached base in 7 of the 9 innings.

E-gads ocala, please leave those stats in the waste basket in the future, they hurt my eyes to even look at...

Gators are trailing 6-1 vs. South Carolina in baseball after 7 innings. Maldanado got thrown out at home trying to stretch a triple into an inside the park HR in the 6th. And McConnell popped up to leave the bases loaded in the bottom of the 7th after PH Jordan Butler drove in our first run with an infield single. Christian Scott came into the game with the best ERA among Gator pitchers who had thrown at least 20 innings at 3.60. But in the 1st 4 innings tonight he gave up 4 home runs and when he left with 1 out in the 7th, Scott had given up 6 runs on 6 hits (all earned), 1 walk and a wild pitch in 101 pitches.

Florida softball improved to 34-9, 7-6 in the SEC with a weird 8-6 win over Texas A&M. UF scored 7 runs in the top of the 1st on 3 singles, 5 walks, a hit batter and an error. Kelly Barnhill was cruising until the bottom of the 4th when she gave up 6 singles, hit a batter and Reynoso made an erro in between to give TAM 5 runs. Light hitting Hannah Sipos went 3-3, including a HR in the 5th, and the Gators scored 8 runs without Lorenz or Lindaman getting a hit. In all Barnhill surrendered 11 singles while striking out 6 in getting the win.

UF baseball loses to South Carolina 6-3, as they couldn't rally from 6-0 down, outhitting the Gamecocks 11-10, but stranding 10 base runners, including 3 in the 8th and 2 in the 9th.

Gator lacrosse improved to 9-6, 3-0 in conference play with a 20-10 win over East Carolina today. They got off to a struggling start this season,. losing several close game to highly ranked opponents. But they've now won 6 straight and appear to be headed towards another conference title and a trip to the NCAA tournament, although probably as a lower seed than they're used to.

UF baseball beat South Carolina 6-4 today in dramatic fashion to win the rubber game of the series, improving their record to 24-14, 6-9 in the SEC. The good guys never led at any point in the game until there were 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th. Tyler Dyson started the game and threw 89 pitches in 4.2 innings, allowing 4 runs on 5 hits and a walk, but left trailing 3-2. David Leuthje pitched the final 4.1 innings, giving up an RBI single to the 1st batter he faced, then only allowing 1 hit and no walks the rest of the way to pick up his 1st win as a Gator pitcher. The Hero of the Day was Jordan Butler, playing 1st base while Calilao moved to RF replacing slumping Wil Dalton. Butler went 4-5, with 4 RBI's on 2 HR's, including a walkoff 2-out 3-run HR in the rain in the bottom of the 9th. The first 2 batters in the inning had struck out, but Langworthy and Calilao walked, setting the stage for Butler's blast on a 2-0 pitch in an absolute must win game for Florida.

Florida softball improved to 35-9, 8-6 in the SEC, with an 8-3 win at Texas A&M tonight. Elizabeth Hightower went to 3-0, pitching 5 innings, giving up 3 runs (2 earned), 5 hits, 3 walks and 1 K. Natalie Lugo got the final 6 outs. Kendyl Lindamana again led the Gator offense, going 2-4, with a double, home run and 4 RBI's. Amanda Lorenz, Sophia Reynoso and Hannah Sipos also had 2 hits each. Gators go for the sweep at 1 pm Sunday on SEC+.

Back on the road this weekend for baseball. Curious to see if Sully sticks with the line up changes he made Sunday.

Maldanado will be back in the lineup as soon as his shoulder quits hurting. He's their most consistent hitter and has been his entire 4 years at Florida. Dalton has struggled all year, but he was so valuable to the team last year it will be interesting to see what O'Sullivan does there. Young was in the lineup for so long because he was hitting like crazy. He's a liability at 2nd base and has been slumping some at the plate, so that's a tough decision, too. You want Reese to succeed because he's a senior and a captain, plus is solid at 2nd base. But he's just not hit when given the chance. And while Roberts hasn't pitched that well, nor had he been especially good as a pinch hitter, he was tremendous Saturday and probably deserves more opportunities to play. So yeah, it will be interesting to see how it plays out.

#6 ranked (#9 in RPI) Gator softball goes to 36-9, 9-6 in the SEC with a sweep of Texas A&M, winning the final game today 4-1. Kelly Barnhill (24-6) had a no-hitter going to the bottom of the 7th, but gave up a double and 2 singles for the Aggies' only run. Florida scored all of their runs in the 3rd on a Sipos single, Lorenz double, Lindaman single and Roberts HR. Florida leads the nation in defense and played errorless ball again today, winning their 7th straight game and continued their streak this year of not losing to an unranked team. UF has a rough week ahead, though, facing #3 FSU (#1 RPI) in Tallahassee Wednesday (7 pm ESPN2) and hosting #5/7 ranked Alabama (#11 in RPI) Friday (5;30 pm ESPN2), Saturday (8 pm SEC+) and Sunday (2 pm ESPN).

UF Softball signed 7 players back in November, all of whom will be on campus this summer. Two of them, a pitcher & catcher, were selected to the U.S. National Junior Women's Team and are ranked as the #2 & #3 players in the nation in the 2019 high school class. Here's a brief bio on each:
2 Julia Cottrill Stillwater (Okla.)C
image_handler.aspx

Commitment: Florida CLUB TEAM: Georgia Impact

Kelley Lynch & Rylee Trlicek's batterymate on the 2019 Junior Women’s National Training Team and played with #1 player Lynch on the national championship Georgia Impact Club Team, Cottrill is one of the nation’s best hitters. The rifle-armed backstop saw few pitches to hit in her senior year at Stillwater last fall—walking 37 times while striking out just once— but still hit .547 with 10 home runs, 27 RBI and an OPS of 1.978.

3 Rylee Trlicek Hallettsville (Texas)P
image_handler.aspx

Commitment: Florida CLUB TEAM: OC Batbusters

Trlicek was recruited by Florida as a pitcher for good reason, but the lefty, who can hit 70 on the radar gun, is also a terror at the plate. Trlicek was the 2018 District 27-3A Offensive MVP for Hallettsville, batting .542 with 14 home runs and 54 RBI. A member of the 2019 Junior Women’s National Training Team, Trlicek was 20-3 with a 0.97 ERA and 226 strikeouts last year for the Brahmas.

Also, the #40 ranked player in this year's signing class is Mia Buffano.

UF's #3 ranked Men's Tennis Team beat South Carolina Sunday 6-1 to win the SEC championship for the 1st time in 16 years and at 12-0 is the first time they've gone undefeated in conference play. They are 20-2 on the season, have now won 14 straight matches and host the SEC tournament starting Wednesday.

UF softball won their 8th straight game tonight in Tallahassee with a huge 4-0 shutout over the #4 (#1 RPI) Noles. Kelly Barnhill threw a 2 hitter with 9 K's, improving her her record to 25-6. The Gators had 10 hits off 2 freshman FSU pitchers who came into the game with a combined record of 16-1 on the year. Hannah Adams went 3-4 with 2 RBI's, Sophia Reynoso had 3 hits and Jordan Roberts added 2 more for the UF team that ran its record to 37-9. UF is playing their best ball of the year as they head into a monster 3-game series at home this weekend vs. #5 (#11 RPI) Alabama.
