  • The Louisiana GOP wants to prohibit the study of racism at state colleges and universities.
  • A GOP resolution, seen by NOLA.com, claimed the "inglorious aspects" of American history were too divisive.
  • It comes amid a nationwide GOP effort to scrub race issues from public schools and public life.

Republican officials in Louisiana are proposing a ban on teaching about racism at the state's higher education institutions — the latest move amid a wave of legislation across the country aimed at legislating curriculum in the nation's classrooms.

GOP Party officials in the state want Louisiana lawmakers to prohibit the study of racism at colleges and universities, claiming the "inglorious aspects" of American history are too divisive, according to NOLA.com, which cites a GOP resolution on the matter.

The state GOP leadership also wants to nix diversity, equity, and inclusion departments at colleges and universities, claiming without evidence that such agencies stir political tensions on campuses and have overgenerous budgets, NOLA.com reported. A third of Louisiana residents are Black, according to the US Census Bureau.

A spokesperson for the Republican Party of Louisiana (LAGOP), which lauds "limited government" and "the rights of the people," did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment on Sunday.

Just ANOTHER case of the GOP telling African American scholars that they don't know truth about African American history better than they do

Black history class to undergo changes, College Board says

The College Board says changes will be made to its new AP African American studies course, after critics said the agency bowed to political pressure and removed several topics from the framework, including Black Lives Matter, slavery reparations and queer life.

In a statement on Monday, the College Board said the development committee and experts charged with authoring the Advanced Placement course “will determine the details of those changes over the next few months.”

“We are committed to providing an unflinching encounter with the facts and evidence of African American history and culture,” the company said.

It remains unclear what the changes are or when they will be made public.

But the official curriculum for the course, released after DeSantis' administration rejected it, downplayed some components that had drawn objections from the governor and other conservatives. The College Board faced an onslaught of criticism from activists and African American scholars outraged at the notion the course changed because of political controversy.

The nonprofit testing company previously said revisions to the course were substantially complete and not shaped by political influence before DeSantis shared his objections. College Board officials said developers consulted with professors from more than 200 colleges, including several historically Black institutions, and took input from teachers piloting the class.

City wants to tell the stories of its Black citizens

Alexandria, Virginia, has a rich history, but part of it has been overlooked. The city’s first Black Family Reunion sought photos and artifacts to enhance library archives.

Many people remain unaware of the rich history engulfing a key Virginia city, and efforts are underway to change that.

According to The Washington Post, officials in Alexandria learned less than 30 years ago that a gas station was constructed on a sizable burial ground for Black Americans who escaped slavery during the Civil War. Parts of the city’s history are known — a church that George Washington and Robert E. Lee frequented is still open for worship, for example — but visitors may walk through Black neighborhoods in the city’s bustling downtown and waterfront without ever learning their names.

While the city has archives full of documents dating back to the 1800s, it neglects to tell the stories of Black Alexandrians who have long been the subject of legal discrimination. Rose Dawson, director of the Alexandria Library, decided about six months ago that she would change that.

I'm sure the democrats will push back. They need to keep people angry and divided. They rely on those votes.

Good attempt at ignoring the motivation of the GOP effort...

Does the GOP rely on the votes of racists?

Do they need to try erase African American history to push back against telling the truth?

I'm sure the GOP wants to limit the violence and hatred based on events from the distant past the democrats continually push.

The GOP knows that minorities need to move on with their lives if they're ever going to be successful.

The democrats want to keep them right where they are.

Lying about the past limits the violence and hatred...how?

Is this the strategy being employed by trumpers about Jan 6?
