Gator softball opened their weekend series with #11 South Carolina winning 3-1 on a 1-hitter from Kelly Barnhill. Gator bats have been anemic of late, though, as their team batting average is down to .296. I've watched all but 2-3 of their games this year and they are way too passive at the plate. They take too many pitching and get called 3rd strikes against them in crucial situation. Just not aggressive at all. And while the pitching has carried them, Barnhill has 50 walks on the season and has given up 9 home runs, Ocasio 8, the staff 19. They only gave up 11 for the entire season last year. They are ranked #7 and right now lead the SEC, but this team just seems to lack something that teams of the past 5 years have had. They already have 7 losses and going into the post season last year only had 6. Barnhill only had 40 walks the entire season last year and gave up only 5 home runs. Expectations are so high for the softball program, I know this seems picking nits. But teams have learned how to hit against our girls better and if we don't start hitting the ball better, especially with runner in scoring position, this season will end a lot sooner than most think.

Gator baseball team just keeps rolling, beating Missouri 3-1 in a hard-fought game. Will Dalton's 2-out, 2 strike double drove in 2 runs in the bottom of the 8th and Michael Byrne got his 9th save of the year.

Ocala, the softball team also leads the nation in walks (221) which helps their on base %.
Amanda gets on base almost every game with a walk.

But I agree that taking a 3rd strike looking grips my butt. I was brought up to 'protect the plate' and swing on anything that you can reach, instead of letting some cross-eyed plate ump  call you out on a 50/50 pitch, or worse on a pitch that missed the plate by several inches, which happens all to often imo. (same goes for the baseball plate umps)

I also hate it when softball or baseball players routinely stand there in a daze on the 1st pitch, taking the best pitch of their at bat as a right down the middle called strike, while letting the pitcher then get ahead of them on the pitch count. o_O

Agree with everything you said, Insta. I know they are taught to be patient and work the count and they always get a ton of walks and always have a superior on base percentage. Doesn't matter, though, if you can't get hits to drive them in. And with the really good pitchers who don't issue many walks and can consistently hit the corners, our girls just stand there. They got shut out by FIU & UCF and held to 1 run by FSU and looked anemic in all 3 games. And it often does depend on the ump's strike zone. But when the ump is calling that outside pitch in the gray, we don't adjust and keep taking called strikes. They just don't make enough solid contact against the good pitchers this year and the pitching, while still excellent, is not as dominant as last year. They miss Delaney Gourley a lot.

Nothing to disagree with ocala. Just some other things to consider.

I miss Hanna Rogers. (silk-smooth)
I miss Lauren Haeger (aka Babe Ruth)
I miss Delanie Gourley. (deft-lefty)
And I'm really gonna miss Kelly Barnhill (the HAMMER)
This is nothing new for Gator softball.

But maybe the next star pitcher is already on the roster:
RHP Natalie Lugo 5-5 Fr - West Covina, Cal.
2017 USA Softball Junior Women’s National Team member
2017 WBSC Junior Women’s World Champions

2017 PGF High School All-American 2018

2018
Pitching - 2.49 ERA - 32 SO, 4 BB, in 25.1 IP
Fielding - 1.000 - 2 PO, 7 Ast on 9 chances.
Batting???
They still list Barnhill with 0 at bats, but they left Lugo completely off the batting roster???

I also really miss the Gators best catcher EVER, Aubree Munro.
You'd rather get in a draw-down with Clint Eastwood, than try to steal 2nd on Aubree! o_O

Year to year, team makeups change, so nothing remains the same, on our team or for the opponents.
IMO, the important thing is to win the games that count the most, not going undefeated.
Make the field. Make the WCWS in OK. Win a couple more game and then celebrate.:)

Saturday updates: #6 Lady Gator lacrosse team ran their record to 11-3, 6-0 in the Big East with an 18-6 win over Marquette, who was previously undefeated in conference play. Gator softball easily won the 1st game of a doubleheader vs. South Carolina 7-0 behind a 2-hitter from Alicia Ocasio. And the Women's tennis team lost a heartbreaker that decided the SEC regular season championship to #3 Vanderbilt 4-3. Gators lost the doubles point, then won 3 of the 1st 5 singles matches. That left the score 3-3 with the #5 singles match between UF's Peggy Porter and Vandy's Summer Dvorak deciding the title. Porter had a 4-1 in the 3rd and final set, only to see Dvorak rip of 5 straight games to win 6-4 and give the Commodores the title. And I predict the Gators will win the football game that starts at 3 pm.

UF softball completed their sweep of #11 South Carolina 3-0 behind Kelly Barnhill's 1 hitter. Nicole Dewitt won the game with a walkoff 3 run homer in the bottom of the 7th to run the Gators' record to 37-7, 12 -3 in the SEC, 1 game ahead of Georgia. The baseball team won Game 1 of their doubleheader with Missouri 10-2 in a game that was close until the bottom of the 7th. JJ Schwarz hit a 2-out 2 run double in the 1st and Jackson Kowar pitched a solid 7 innnings, only surrendering a 2 out 2 run double in the 6th that tied the game. Schwarz put the Gators up 3-2 with a solo HR in the bottom of the inning. In the 7th, Missouri went to their bullpen and UF rocked 3 relievers with 6 runs, including a HR by Maldanado, then added another in the 8th for their final margin of victory. Missouri starts 3 lefties on the weekend and the 1st 2 have been tough on Gator hitters. We'll see their 3rd guy in about 45 minutes against Tyler Dyson. Baseball team is now 31-6, 11-3 in the SEC, a game and a half ahead of Arkansas, 2 games ahead of Georgia. Hope they can get the sweep tonight.

Baseball team put on a show. I haven't seen game 2 yet, I have to watch the games on watchEspn, but the Gators put on line drive derby in Game 1. JJ is hitting like his freshman year. India is the best hitter in the league and Dalton is a freaking line drive off the wall machine. Plus Maldonado and Bell are coming on, and everybody else is always on base. As always, pitching and defense are a given. Huge props to the big and loud post-orange-and-blue crowd.

Gator Baseball is rocking!!!!

All the struggles, all the close games, all the very late extra innings from last year are paying off this year for the baseball team.

Softball on the other hand, well......

As of April 16 last year, Gator baseball was 24-12, 8-7 in the SEC. The Gator softball team was 40-3, 15-2 in the SEC. This year's baseball team is better on paper and is off to a much better start than last year, although last year's team won it all, finishing 52-19, 21-9 in the SEC. Last year's softball team finished 58-10, 20-3 in the SEC and were national runners-up. They appear to be better than this year's softball team, although they can do like last year's baseball team and turn it on in the post season. Both excellent programs with great coaching and quality players.

Wednesday afternoon Gator lacrosse won their 6th stright to stay unbeaten in the Big East by pounding Cincinnati 20-4. And the softball team destroyed FAMU 19-3 in a 5 inning mercy rule game. Freshman Natalie Lugo pitched 4.1 of no-hit ball, but was taken out when she issued a walk and lost her perfect game. Sophomore Katie Chronister came in for the last 2 outs, but gave up a couple of walks and 3 hits to allow FAMU to get on the board.

Don't forget the big baseball series in Kentucky starts Thursday night at 7 pm with that game and Friday night's games on the SEC Network. And Friday & Saturday UF's gymnastics team competes for the National Championship, televised on ESPN2 & ESPNU. Semifinal 1 is at 1 pm Friday on ESPN2 with LSU, Alabama, UCLA, Arkansas, Nebraska & Georgia competing. At 7 pm Friday on ESPNU, it's defending champ Oklahoma, Florida, Utah, Washington, California and Kentucky. The top 3 finishers from each semifinal face off Saturday at 7 on ESPNU for the national title.

#5 Gators 19 - 3 FL-A&M
RHP Natalie Lugo's (2-0) freshman arm, in 4.1 she struck out 7, with 1 walk and 1 hit.
And the bats were on fire all night.

In Florida's 45 games played this season, Jr LF Amanda Lorenz has taken 42 walks.....
And when they do pitch to her, she's batting .390
She has reached base safely in all 45 games this season.
She is a big part of why UF has scored runs in the 1st inning 26 times .
For her entire UF career, she has reached base safely in all but 7 games.

Lorenz UF Career Ranks:
Fielding Percentage = 1.000 (1st)
Slugging % = .637 (5th)
On Base % = .526 (1st)
Batting Average = .395 (1st)
With an absolutely amazing Bio:

PS
The Gators just put 63 more student/atheltes on the Winter SEC Academic Honor Roll.
Plus -- SEC Athletes of the Year:
Men's Swimming - Caeleb Dressel
Women's Gymnastice - Alex McMurtry

Friday recap: Women's tennis beat LSU 4-2 to advance to the semifinals of the SEC tournament against Arkansas. Softball team beat Miss. St. 8-3 in Starkville. Amanda Lorenz went 4-4 with a HR, Ocasio hit a 3-run homer and Kelley Barnhill tossed a 2 hitter to go 20-1. The only problem was that both hits were home runs. She walked a bunch and had several illegal pitches called against her, But the Gators won easily. Doubleheader tomorrow due to rain forecast for Sunday. UF gymnastics team advanced to the National finals tomorrow, finishing 2nd in their semifinal match to 2 time defending champ Oklahoma. 4 SEC teams were eliminated today - Kentucky, Alabama, Georgia & Arkansas. The finals will be UF, Oklahoma, LSU, UCLA, Utah and Nebraska. Gator baseball was cruising 7-0 behind Will Dalton's 6 RBI's and Jackson Kowar's shutout, clutch pitching. But freshman Jordan Butler was ineffective in the bottom of the 8th, gave up a run and was relieved by Michael Byrne with 2 outs and the bases loaded. Of course, Byrne got the 3rd out and will close out the game in the 9th.

Gator Women Gymnastics finished #2 Firday night (top 3 advance), so they move on to the SUPER-6 Finals on Saturday.

#5 UF 39-7 (.848), 13-3 (.813) SEC, have played 23 Top 25 Opponents in 46 games.
Fully one half of their games have been vs Top 25 Teams.
They have thus far gone 17-6 (.739) against those Top 25 Teams.

LF Amanda Lorenz has now reached base safely in every game this season, and 170 out of 177 games over her Gator career.:eek:

1B Kayli Kvistad got her 34th walk of the season. She is #2 in UF History with her .497 On Base %.
She also has UF"s 6th best All Time Career Fielding % at .995. She is also one of only 9 Gator players to record a single season 1.000 Fielding % (on 105 chances) in 2015.

RHP Kelly Barnhill 20-1 threw for her 12th game with 10+ Strike-outs, (4 walks).

The Gator Team Batters scored in the 1st inning for the 29th time this season and scored first for the 35th time. They hold a 28-1 record with scoring in the first and 33-2 when scoring first.
==========

#1 Gator Baseball Team, 34-7, 14-3 SEC, secured an away series win (2-0) vs #9 UK with their 2nd win in Lexington.

OF Will Dalton leads the SEC with 15 HR's.

3B Jonathan India a close Gator 2nd to him with 13 HR's and India is batting a team leading .430 on the season.

This year, the team bats are keeping up with the team fielding defense and the always stellar pitching. :)

Gator Women's Tennis just knocked off LSU in the SEC Tourney Quarterfinals. :p

UF Women's tennis earned their way to the SEC title match by beating Arkansas 4-2 Saturday. They will meet #2 Vanderbilt at 2:30 on Sunday for the tourney title. Gator baseball team dropped the 3rd game of their series with Kentucky 3-2. Tyler Dyson only lasted 2 innings, giving up all 3 KY runs, before giving way to Jack Leftwich, who pitched well in shutting out KY the rest of the way. But the Gators only managed 2 hits (a leadoff double in the 1st by Liput and a solo HR by Schwarz in the 9th) and just couldn't get much going against KY pitching today. They had the bases loaded, no outs in the 1st inning and couldn't score. That pretty much told the tale of the game. UF's softball team beat Miss. St. in the 1st game of a doubleheader 6-2 behind Amanda Lorenz's grand slam, as Alicia Ocasio won her 16th game of the year. And the #6 Gator lacrosse team ran their record to 13-3, 8-0 in the Big East with a solid 18-13 win at Denver U., an historically good lacrosse program.

#5 UF softball ran their record to 41-7, 15-3 in the SEC with a sweep of Miss. St. in Starkeville. They won the final game late this afternoon 3-0 behind Kelly Barnhill's 3 hitter, in which she improved to 21-1 on the year. The gators only led 1-0 going to the 7th innning, but had been no-hit to that point by Holly Ward, scoring an unearned run early in the game. In the top of the 7th, Ocasio reached 1st on the Bulldog's 3rd error of the game and scored on Jamie Hoover's double off the wall. Hoover scored on Janell Wheaton's sacrifice fly to give the Gators their margin of victory.

The Gators have a big midweek game hosting FSU and then host LSU for a 3-game series next weekend, which is televised on the SEC network Friday and ESPN2 Saturday & Sunday.

Gator gymnastics finished 3rd in the NCAA Finals tonight. They had a great match, scoring an excellent 197.850. But it wasn't quite enough to beat UCLA's 198.075 & Oklahoma's 198.0375. LSU, Utah & Nebraska rounded out the top 6. UF's failure to score big on the beam is what cost them the 2/10ths of a point that would have won the match. These college gymnasts are incredible and it's a fun sport to watch for those who never do. And like in most sports in which the Gators compete, we are among the very best!!

Six of UF's (killer SoS) 7 season losses have come to Top 25 opponents.
The Gators are 19-6 (.760) vs Top 25 teams (25) for the season.

In Saturday's double-header, completing the Sweep @ #19 MsSt:
Game 2 -- LF Amanda Lorenz hit her 2nd Gran Slam of the season for the 6-2 win.
Game 3 -- RHP Kelly Barnhill (20-1) pitched another complete game Shutout 3-0.
Their 26th Shutout of the season in the series finale was their 10th Shutout over a Top 25 team.

#5 UF softball beat #6 FSU 5-1 tonight behind Kelly Barnhill's 2 hitter with 10 K's. Noles' Megan King had been pitching a great game as well, as the score was tied 0-0 going to the bottom of the 6th. But the Gators scored 5 runs on a Lorenz single, a DeWitt double, a Kvistad walk, singles by Ocasio & Wheaton and then a bases-clearing double by Sophia Reynoso. This was a huge win for NCAA seeding, as the Gators won their 7th straight to move to 42-7 going into the weekend home series against LSU.

UF baseball beat Auburn and Casey Mize, the supposed #1 player to be selected in the upcoming MLB draft 3-1, behind Brady Singer's 7 innings, a shutout 8th by Jordan Butler and save #11 for Michael Byrne. Jonathan India had a 2 run homer in the 1st and Brady Smith added an RBI single later on. Great win.

You got a source that says Mize will be drafted first? He will definitely be drafted early. Maybe the first college pitcher or even college player. Not sure about high school kids

Obviously you didn't watch the game tonight because the announcers said that's what the projection of the experts said. They mentioned in several times during the broadcast.

I didnt watch the game. I am an Auburn fan so I know he has been really good the last two years. Almost half his outs this year were strikeouts. Continued that against Florida with 10 strikeouts in 7 innings

He was very good. After an error by your 3rd baseman in the bottom of the 1st, he hung a slider over the middle of the plate and India made him pay. But he was excellent overall. He has 4 pitches that he throws any time in the count and is a competitor. I was impressed.

With 61 MLB Scouts in attendance for the game:

Mize - 10 SO's, 3 Hits, 1 BB, 3 R's (W/L 8-2)

Singer- 7 SO's, 4 Hits, 2 BB, 1 R (W/L 9-1)

Singer doesn't get as many SO's, but they don't seem to be able to hit for chit off him. A lot of dink dribbles to the in-field and pop-ups across the entire field, with the few clean hits being scattered across a game instead of piled up in one inning.

To begin the season, at least one of the ranker/graders had Singer at #1 and Mize at #4.
It has moved around across the season, but about everyone agrees that both are Top 5's.

I actually looked it up after I asked the earlier question about Mize. Keith Law who is the baseball draft and minor league guy for ESPN thinks Mize will be the first pick Saw something that had Singer as the 5th pick

UF softball beat #15 LSU Friday night 7-0 behind Kelly Barnhill's 15 K's, as she ran her record to 23-1. It was the nation-leading 27th shutout for Gator pitchers, as the team ran their record to 43-7, 16-3 in the SEC.

Baseball team got pounded by Auburn tonight 11-5. Kowar had his worst outing of the year and Andrew Baker was terrible in relief. Defense made 2 errors. Langworthy & Horvath got 3 hits each, the rest of the team got 3 hits. India was 0-5, Dalton 0-4. Team is 3-4 over their last 7 games. Relying on Jack Leftwich, making his first SEC start, to win the rubber game tomorrow.

Auburn is probably better than our record. We have lost 5 SEC games by one run and then the game last night by two runs. Our RPI was 10th nationally coming into this series

They’re 15-5 in the SEC. Kowar has to pitch better than that, obviously. Every lineup is going to hit a few rough patches.

Agree with that. I'm just hoping they didn't peak too soon. Last year was a struggle all year and then they got to Omaha and put it all together. Baseball is a game of streaks and right now they've hit a rough patch. On the road next weekend at Texas A&M is not going to be easy either.
