2021-22 Basketball Primer

Mizzou starting to open it up. Feels like Ole Miss. Mike White has a great halftime adjustment against OKS and then comes out and lays an egg this game.
This would once have been an embarrassing loss. Back when we had standards of excellence we aspired to.

There's no way AD Stricklin doesn't have a list of coaches to replace Mike White, since last season.

I have to give Appleby credit for the way he took over in the last 3 minutes, hit all his free throws and the Gators pulled out a 66-65 win. A must win that they got.

Mizzou really helped us out a lot with those last 2 possessions. Appleby was money at the foul line. Lane gave us a great spark. How in the hell was that not a hook and hold?? We got called for one against Tenn that was way less than that.

It was a hook and hold, but then he reacted by shoving the Missouri player - so double technicals were called.

UF is very bubblicious right now and is currently projected to have to play in a play-in game

I think to go dancing, UF needs to win 7 games out of the last 9 regular season plus out of the SEC tourney.....or perhaps 6 games if one is an upset of UK or Aubie

White has some work left to get the team into the NCAA

The guys are playing tough and hard but if we don’t get Castleton back then we are looking squarely at the NIT.

6-3 in last 9 will get us in. That will put us at 10-8 and with the deep SEC that will be good enough.

That’s going to be a tall order. UK twice, Auburn, Texas A&M, and Arkansas. Would should beat UGA twice, Vandy and Ole Miss. that’s 4. That means two of the other 5 provided we don’t slip up on the “should haves.”

Mizzou is not a great team, but they did beat Bama and they gave AU all they wanted, so they can play the game at times

PG Tyree Appleby scored the go ahead final points from the foul line.
However, Gatkek's block without fouling is what gave Appleby his chance to put in the final nails..

Mike White post game ON TUONGTHACH GATKEK:

"Tuon plays hard, great activity, great motor, had a huge play down there down the stretch of course and it's just what an odd situation. I mean, we didn't think he’d log many minutes this year at all — even considered a red shirt on the front end and, you know, I don't really want to get into that stuff. It's a long conversation, but we thought he could be a good player down the road and he did too. And he's a guy that between the lines every day he just brings it, he works. He's got a great attitude. And it's a good example to a lot of people that you know if you're not ready, you're going to be exposed. And he was ready, you know, when his name was called here in these past couple of weeks. And he certainly got a ways to go in so many areas, but I don't question his effort — ever.”

The iG said that Gatkek could give the team some 'quality minutes' across the season, but I had no idea that he'd be forced to play this much, or that he'd be this good. I'm a little surprised, but happy for him/them....

The iG has also has defended PG Appleby, while some claimed that he's no PG.... A PG has to be able to make FT's, and especially in the final minutes of a game. Appleby went 10/10 at the line, and scored the final winning 2 pts from the line.

“It's really satisfying. I love Tyree — great kid — love his family. It's important to him. He's a scrappy, physically tough competitive high character kid and you know he's had his ups and downs like our entire team has this year and his last go-around to be playing this time of year his best basketball is gratifying, but it's what should happen with older guards, juniors and seniors. You love to see guys figure it out, and I think he feels good about the way he's playing of course, but we got a bunch more (games).” -- Mike White

My attitude on the SEC officials was more of the same. They tried to give it to Mizzou, but the Gators poured it on and came away as the winners....

Note: Keeping in mind that the SEC is playing at an all time high level. Mike has struggled to keep going to the Dance (the only SEC coach to make the last 4) while constantly dealing with 'critical to the team' injuries. The E-8 was his last fully healthy season. Jus-damn.... And cold hard facts, are not excuses, except to the entitled and to the opponent trolls...

Final thought: Even if/when they get CC back, the road to the dance this year is touch & go. The NIT is there, but the Dance is certainly borderline this season. Here's to hoping for the best the rest of the way, but I like the coach and the one's that he has playing for him. A solid high character group, from the coaches all the way down to the WO's....

Gatkek is definitely an effort guy. My hope is that we can squeeze out 5-4 over last 9 and make the dance.

UF Women's basketball just finished an 84-59 demolition of #7 Tennessee at the ExacTech Arena. The surprising Gator women are now 16-6, 6-3 in the SEC and could crack the Top 20 next week, especially if they can beat #14 Georgia in Athens on Sunday. The Gators' defense was tenacious, as they forced 18 turnovers while allowing the Vols only 8 assists. Meanwhile, UF had 18 assists to 9 turnovers. Florida shot 53% from the field, including 6-16 from the arc. They were led by Kiara Smith's 25 points, with 3 other ladies in double figures. So far this is the surprise program on campus this year. Gooo Lady Gators!!

Time for a rant. Now let me get this straight. Last week (according to Joe Lunardi) we are in the field of 68. Then we win our Big12/SEC challenge against Oklahoma State. Then we beat Missouri on the road, both games without our leading scorer, rebounder and rim protector as well as his backup and suddenly we are out of the field? What an absolute joke. Does he not watch games or at least the scores?

Beating nit bound ok st and bad mizzou does nothing to help our ncaaa chances. Other bubble teams had better wins and moved ahead of us.

Well I’m not sure I agree with this. Who had better wins that moved ahead? Didn’t Ok state just take down Baylor and Mizzou beat Bama?

OK St is 10-11 and in next to last place in the Big 12. Mizzou is 8-13 and in next to last place in the SEC. Those wins do not help move us up. We need wins against teams with a RPI/BPI of 50 or better.

Maybe they should hire Ms. Finley as the Men's BB coach. The women lost their best player and actually got better.
An ugly Cheap-shot ocala, but whatever....

Two Questions for ya:
Was their 'best' player an All SEC Player, (CC)?
Was their 'best' player the SEC Preseason PoY, (KJ)?
Both of those guys are sitting on the bench currently....

And did they turn-over half or more of their team from last year while bringing in 5 xfers and 2 Fr?
Rhetorical, so nev-ver-mineee....

Every team turns over players every year. Baylor just won the champ starting 4 transfers and the Zags started 5 transfers. It's the landscape of college hoops. And every team has injuries. Lsu was missing their best player against us and still beat us. KJ hasn't played in 2 years....hopefully we get CC back soon. The Lady Gators are doing extremely well and they lost their best player. Impressive.

Ole Miss is 12-10, 3-6, but beat us badly a couple of weeks ago. They have injury issues as well, just having lost freshman McDonald's AA Daeshun Ruffin for the season in their upset win over LSU a few days ago. They are also without starters Robert Allen (lost for the season early in the year) and Jarkel Joiner, who was lost in late December. So both teams are snakebit with injury losses, the Rebels having lost 3 starters.

That’s a lot of injuries to a basketball team. Imagine if you lost two thirds of the starters on the football team. Since basketball players go both ways this is a fair comparison.

Technically we are only missing 1 starter. Jit was a backup.
