Baseball Three Takeaways from Florida’s series win vs. Texas

Three Takeaways from Florida’s series win vs. Texas
(Hector)

The Florida Gators earned their fifth consecutive SEC series win of the 2025 season, and this might be Florida’s most impressive. The Gators were on the road and took two out of three against the #1 Texas Longhorns.

Florida has great pitching all weekend, especially from freshman right-handed pitcher Aidan King. After this series, Florida has firmly solidified their spot in the NCAA Tournament and is competing for a chance to host a regional. Here are three takeaways from Florida’s series win versus the Texas Longhorns.

1. Florida tops #1 Texas in road series win

The Florida Gators have been playing some of their best baseball after the worst start to SEC play in the Kevin O’Sullivan era. Since that putrid start, the Gators have won five consecutive series against SEC programs and just upset #1 Texas on the road.

The Gators jumped on the Longhorns early in the series with a six-run first inning and cruised to an 8-2 victory in the series opener. In Game Two, Florida was leading early in the game, but the Gators lost momentum and their ace pitcher, Liam Peterson, due to a weather delay. Texas stormed back and evened the series, forcing a Mother’s Day rubber match.

In the series finale, Florida had an incredible pitching performance from their freshman starter, Aidan King. The Jacksonville native pitched seven shutout innings and led Florida to a series-clinching win over Texas.

2. Aidan King dominated Texas’s lineup in hostile territory

For the second time this season, freshman right-handed pitcher Aidan King has pitched a gem on the road against one of the top teams in the country. King played a huge role in Florida’s series win over the Longhorns last weekend.

In his last outing, King had a career performance. King pitched seven innings, allowing two hits, no runs, no walks, and a career-high nine strikeouts. He also picked up his fifth win of the season.

This isn’t the first time King has dominated on the mound against an elite lineup. In his first SEC start, King had an electric outing against the Tennessee Volunteers. King threw six innings, allowing four hits, one run, one walk, and six strikeouts. King has pitched like a Freshman All-American this season and could be one of the best arms in the country in the next couple of seasons.

3. Could Florida end up hosting a regional?

After such a historically bad start, many people wondered if Florida would qualify for the NCAA Tournament. No program has started 2-10 or worse to begin SEC play and make it to the NCAA Tournament. Not only will Florida be the first to do it, but they also have a legit chance to be a regional host.

The Gators have one final series before they enter the NCAA Tournament. Florida will host the Alabama Crimson Tide in a three-game series starting Thursday night. According to D1 Baseball, Alabama ranks 18th in the country.

If Florida can at least win the series and have a good showing in the SEC Tournament, the NCAA Tournament committee will have to discuss whether Florida has done enough to host a regional. The Gators have the fourth-toughest schedule in the country and are also ranked #14 in the RPI rankings. If Florida can finish strong, it’s not out of the question that there could be a regional hosted in Gainesville, Florida.

New Story Poulter tied for lead, Gators 9-under with seven shot lead at Bremerton Regional

Luke Poulter (-4) and Matthew Kress (-3) sit T1 and T3 as Florida began NCAA Regional play with a 9-under round one.

BREMERTON, Wash. -
The Florida men's golf team got off to a great start and leads the NCAA Bremerton Regional behind a 9-under opening round as Luke Poulter is tied for the individual lead at 4-under on Monday at Gold Mountain Golf Club.

The Gators 9-under 279 round one is the lowest since they shot 8-under in the final round of the NCAA Bath Regional in 2023 - UF's SEC and National Championship season. It was Florida's lowest opening round at regionals since a 12-under mark in 2018 at the Watson Course in Kissimmee, Fla., which was the last time Florida both led after the first 18-holes and won at regionals.

Florida leads by seven shots and will tee off tomorrow at 11 a.m. ET with No. 1 seed Arizona State (-2) and No. 10 seed Kansas State (-2) as after 54-holes, the top-5 teams and low individual on a non-advancing team, earn a spot in the NCAA National Championships at Omni La Costa from May 23-28. In nine regional appearances under head coach J.C. Deacon, Florida has advanced seven times and the last four straight seasons as the current streak began in Cle Elum, Washington in 2021.

Poulter carded a 4-under 68 in his first career round of regional play for his 12th par or better round, seventh in the 60s and second 68 of the postseason (round three of SEC Championship). Tied with Kansas State's Cooper Schultz, he has one-shot lead over teammate Matthew Kress, who is tied for third at 3-under while he played his seventh career round of regionals and 34th postseason round (stroke and match play combined).

All four counting scores were under-par today for Florida as the top two in the lineup, Ian Gilligan and Jack Turner both made birdie on the 18th for 1-under 71s and are tied for 10th. Gilligan regrouped from 2-over at the turn with a 3-under bogey-free second nine. The non-counting score was from freshman Zack Swanwick (72, +2), who closed strong behind a bogey-free 2-under back nine.

Part of the first wave off, the No. 2 seed Gators got off to a great start, leading at 3-under through 4-7 holes completed and were atop of the leaderboard and under par the whole day on the Olympic Course of Gold Mountain Golf Club.

Poulter kicked off Florida's surge and 8-under back nine as the redshirt-sophomore made five birdies in the six-hole stretch on holes 6-11 moving him into the solo lead as he won his first collegiate tournament this season at the Schenkel Invitational this spring. Fresh off advancing to final qualifying of the 2025 U.S. Open Championship on Thursday, he logged six birdies (tournament-high) with 10 pars and only two bogeys, which his first didn't come until his 12th hole. He erased the bogey on the 12th hole with a birdie on the par4 13th.

Kress also made back-to-back birdies at turn like Poulter, who reached one back of his teammate with his fifth birdie of the round on the 16th. Between holes 10-16, Kress went bogey-free 4-under.

Florida entered the clubhouse with a two-shot lead as part of the first wave to finish 18-holes before ending with a seven-shot advantage and 10-shot lead inside the championship cut for round two.

Post Round Quotes - Head Coach J.C. Deacon
On a great start...

"A great start and great trip so far. Just really love this group. They really drive the ball and have the last two days. They have grown a lot this year. Showed a lot of maturity and made a ton of good decisions. We're excited for the challenge ahead. This is a really hard golf course so to shoot nine-under is a heck of round of golf."

On Luke Poulter's play today...
"For Luke the moments never going to get the best of him. He has a great mindset for golf. Where he thinks he belongs, whether he does or not. He is made for this stuff."

On Matthew Kress' play today...
"When someone that works as hard as Matthew does, you know at some point is going to figure its self out. He has been putting in a ton of work with Dudley Hart (Associate Head Coach) this year trying to move the ball a little more left to right and getting more comfortable with that. He was behind me today so I got to look back and just to see him hitting those great shots in the big tournament, I am so happy for him. He has put in the work to good use and it's really rewarding. I am proud of Matthew because I know he wasn't happy with his performance at the SEC Championship. To get two guys shooting seven under between the them out here is outstanding golf."

On message to team going into tomorrow...
"Nothing changes for us, it's the same thing. Have to get up early and be ready to go. Just have to commit to shots. The big thing here is that we have been coaching them since Sahalee (fall opener in Seattle) and Zack Swanwick was reminding me today how firm it was then, which I didn't remember. So we've been preparing for this moment all year from the thinking about the numbers and where to land ball. The firmer this course can get, I think the better it suits our team. There is lots of golf left, but nice to get off to a good start."

Baseball Shutdown Start at No. 1 Texas Earns King Third SEC Weekly Honor

The rookie righty shut out the nation's top team over seven, two-hit innings on Sunday.

GAINESVILLE, Fla.
– Earning a Southeastern Conference weekly award for the third time this season, Florida rookie right-hander Aidan King was named the SEC Freshman of the Week on Monday afternoon.

King's third SEC weekly accolade represents his second Freshman of the Week nod (April 14), as he also claimed sole SEC Pitcher of the Week honors back on March 3. Monday's announcement marks Florida's seventh SEC weekly award as a team this season.

In Sunday's rubber match at No. 1 Texas, King earned the decisive victory behind seven shutout, two-hit innings. The Jacksonville, Fla. native was utterly dominant from start to finish, striking out a career-high nine batters against just three walks. He also set personal bests in innings and pitches (110).

Handing the Longhorns their first home series loss of the campaign, King now boasts a 5-2 record, 2.90 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 64-to-19 strikeout-to-walk ratio across 59.0 frames. The UF true freshman has allowed one earned run in 14 1/3 innings over his last three starts for a 0.63 ERA

King's dominant outing gave Florida its first series victory against the nation's No. 1-ranked team since sweeping No. 1 Texas A&M from April 1-3, 2016.

Back in the top-25 rankings at No. 23, Florida concludes the regular season at home with a three-game series against No. 18 Alabama. The set opens on Thursday, May 15 at 6:30 p.m. and runs through Saturday, May 17.

New Story Davies Delivers Game-Winning Goal, No. 4 Florida Outlasts Stanford in Double Overtime to Advance to NCAA Quarterfinals

The Gators earned their fourth one-goal victory this season and improve to 3-0 in overtime on the year. Kaitlyn Davies scored the game-winning goal with 1:35 to play in double overtime.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -
Kaitlyn Davies connected on the game-winning goal in double overtime to propel No. 4 Florida (19-2, 5-0 Big 12) into the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals, as they took down No. 10 Stanford (15-6, 7-2 ACC) by a score of 13-12 on Sunday afternoon.

The goal happened after Gianna Monaco's free-position shot with 1:44 left in double overtime was fired wide, which was scooped by Frannie Hahn. Hahn then found Davies in front of the net, where Davies shot trickled just past Lucy Pearson and seemingly went over the line, which was called a goal. After an officials review, the goal on the field was confirmed.

"We just kept saying it, we're not going home." Davies said after the game.

The game featured five ties and three lead changes, as the Gators led by as many as three goals twice and trailed by one goal twice. Florida earned its fourth one-goal victory and ninth come-from-behind win this season, as the Orange and Blue are headed to the Quarterfinals for the ninth-time in school history.

Davies led the way for Florida, tying a career high five goals, while also winning four draw controls, one ground ball and causing one turnover.

Jordan Basso contributed four goals, along with two from Monaco, and one each from Clark Hamilton and Josie Hahn.

After trailing the draw control battle 9-3 at halftime, UF won the draw controls 13-5 in the second half and overtime to outdraw the Cardinal 16-14 overall. Sophomore Gabbi Koury hauled in a career best six draw controls, while Davies helped set-up a draw control win for Josie Hahn at the start of the second overtime, which led to the game-winning possession for UF.

Celeste Forte caused a career high four turnovers, including a big-time strip of Stanford's Ava Arceri with seven seconds remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime at 12-12.

How It Happened

First Quarter

* Stanford struck first, but the Gators answered with two of their own, as Basso scored on a wrap around the crease to even it at 1-1 with 11:56 remaining. Monaco then scored with 6:45 to play off a great set-up out top from Koury to make it 2-1.

* Stanford connected on a man-up eight-meter goal with 1:27 to play to even it at 2-2 after one.

Second Quarter

* Florida struck with three consecutive goals to start the frame in the first 6:50. Basso scored her second off a feed from Gabby Greene, which was followed by a goal from Josie Hahn, facilitated by her sister Frannie to make it 4-2. Basso concluded the run with a man-up goal, off the pass from Monaco for her third of the day. Florida led 5-2.

* Stanford responded with two goals, before Hamilton ripped a goal past the goalkeeper to give UF a 6-4 lead at the break.

Third Quarter

* The two teams exchanged two goals apiece for the first four goals of the quarter, as Davies and Monaco scored for the Gators. UF led 8-6 with 11:29 to play.

* Stanford mounted three consecutive goals to end the quarter to give them a 9-8 lead heading into the fourth.

Fourth Quarter

* Florida came out scorching hot in the fourth, connecting on four consecutive goals in the first 2:58 of the frame, with three of them via Davies. She scored the first one, which was followed by a rip from Basso at the 13:22 mark to put Florida up 10-9.

* Florida scored its next goal just eight seconds later, as Davies won the draw control and bolted in from the left side to the cage and finished the score, making it 11-9. This led to a Stanford timeout.

* Following the timeout and a draw control win from Theresa Bragg, Davies scored another goal, as she weaved her way inside from the left wing to put Florida in front 12-9 with 12:02 to play.

* Stanford answered with three straight goals, to tie it at 12-12 with 4:41 remaining.

* Following a UF turnover on the next possession, Elyse Finnelle made a stop with 2:16 to play as Florida called timeout.

* After a Gators turnover with under one minute to play, UF stood strong as Forte caused a turnover on Aceri with seven seconds to play to send the game to overtime.
First Overtime

* Stanford won the opening draw, but could net end the game as they had two shots sail wide of the cage, to give Florida a possession in the three-minute frame.

* The Gators lost the ball with under 10 seconds remaining, but Josie Hahn instantly caused a turnover, which Monaco scooped up the loose ball. Monaco had her shot rejected by Pearson to send the game to double overtime.
Second Overtime

* In the second overtime, Josie Hahn came away with the draw control to give the Gators a chance to end the game on offense.

* Monaco drew a foul, giving her an eight-meter opportunity at the 1:44 mark, with a chance to send UF to the next round. Her shot was wide of the cage, in which Frannie Hahn scooped up. Hahn found Davies around the goal and Davies shot seemingly just trickled past Pearson, in which an official on the field called a goal.

* After review, the referees confirmed the goal on the field, to push the Gators past the Cardinal 13-12 in a double overtime thriller.
Coach O'Leary on the squad's success and willingness to stick together...
"I thought we competed from start to finish. When we look at what this team brings to the table, it's that we have each other's backs. It doesn't matter if we're up by four, down by four, overtime, I think that there is so much love and respect. That's taken us really far."
