Double pneumonia does not mean pneumonia in both lungs. Double pneumonia means that he had an original pneumonia, usually a viral pneumonia, and then contracted a secondary pneumonia on top of it, usually bacterial.

I’m getting tired of the news trying to describe that as pneumonia in both lungs.

I would assume he means that Catholics do not blindly follow the pope like they did 100 years ago. Particularly American Catholics. We tend to be quite independent. Most of us do not believe in Papal infallibility for example.
