We got another commitment today

I agree that getting the best players gives you the best chance to win. I wish every player we signed was rated 5 stars.

Having said that, I think a good coach can overcome a talent gap. I'm not saying that Mac is an elite coach. It's too soon to tell what kind of coach he will be, However, we have lots of other examples to work with.

Stanford finished the season ranked 3rd last year. This despite the fact that their last four recruiting classes were ranked 23rd, 5th, 61st and 14th by Rivals.

TCU's last four recruiting classes were ranked 27, 37, 29 and 51 by Rivals.
Michigan State was ranked 32, 41, 46 and 22 by Rivals.

Both of those teams would have been heavy favorites against most of the teams that finished better than them in the recruiting rankings.

I think coaching is a bigger factor than quality of players. I'm not saying that a great coach can win championships with scrubs. Even great coaches need talented players. However, I do think coaches like Saban and Meyer could win with the talent at lesser schools. I also think a coach like Muschamp could lose with the talent at Bama.

And how did Michigan St fair when they went head to head with Bama?

And some of thise you mention are definately good examples, BUT none of them play an SEC schedule with FSU as well.

Good point on Mich State but heck how did high ranked recruiting teams such as UGA and LSU fair vs Bama.

Not trying to argue with you at all but not too many have faired too well vs Bama except Ole Miss and occasionally Auburn.

TG, your examples were excellent, and I believe Mac might very well be an above average to very good coach. My worry is he lacks the CEO skills to make UF a national title contender. Three things concern me, the inability/unwillingness to tweak down the stretch, his hiring of coordinators/staff and recruiting elite talent (especially Florida kids). And honestly, a few staff adjustments may fix all three.

Unique systems can make up for talent deficit in some areas. I like the TCU example but they have a unique system they recruit players for, so they tend to differ from a lot of schools in their evaluations. They've been running that 4-2-5 hybrid defense before it became en vogue and tailor recruits to it. For example their starting middle linebacker last year was 5'11, 210 lbs. That guy was underrecruited because most schools saw him as a safety, but he didn't have the speed for safety. But in TCU's system he's a perfect speedy, undersized linebacker who can also play that rover spot they like. TCU's offense is similarly unique so because of that I don't think rankings matter as much for them.

And that's where we differ from schools like a TCU. From the looks of it doesn't seem as if we do anything unique system wise AND we play much better comp week after week. If we ran something a little bit more off the wall than a lot of the schools we play I'd be willing to overlook the rankings because we're getting players tailored to what we do who may be overlooked because they're evaluated in one particular role while we plan to use them in another. But we're recruiting the same guys as everyone else and just missing. We aren't really looking for anything different. We've chased a lot of those top guys hard and have just missed.

True, but Bama has Saban. If Bama had Muschamp Michigan State would have won despite the talent gap.

Good players are very important, but I think an elite coach is the single biggest factor.

Correct on both points, really kind of the Oregon offense as well.

And I have pointed out we are chasing the top prospects over and over. To like some of our takes is fine, but to pretend we are passing on the top guys purposely ia just flat out not correct.

Hopefully he learned from his first season as a head coach and will tweak his offense and defense as things happen during the season (injuries, suspension, etc) and as well as hire. the right coaching fits. Right now it's everybody vs Alabama. Sometimes a team can catch Bama slipping and upset them but not sure if it is talent or in game coaching tweaks that will be the key.

No doubt we need to sew up a few pipelines and make Florida kids want to play for Florida.

I guess the assuring thing is with a nee AD coming in he will adjust or we will be looking at a new coach. We won't get the Foley man-crush on Chump situation again.

Junior college defensive tackle Javier Edwards committed on the spot when he received an offer today. This kid is a beast at 6-foot-3, 340-pounds.

Edwards_bfsyft.jpg

According to Zach Abolverdi, Geoff Collins offered him in high school when he coached at Mississippi State. Edwards is from Houston and is playing at Blinn College in Texas.

He looks like a run stuffer. If nothing else he will eat up space. He is almost exactly the same height and weight as former star Alabama DT Terrence Cody AKA Mt. Cody.

For a big guy he can move pretty well.

In his freshman year at Blinn College he played in eight games and recorded six solo tackles and 21 assisted for 27 total. He also recorded one tackle for loss.

He looks really slow. We really can't recruit any better than this? This is ridiculous.

Steve Spurrier - "We found out that the 'bama' scholarships were actually 'worth' more ($$ + other benefits) than our's were." o_O

Much like the recent Ole Miss ships.

I for one, don't want my Gators to return to that type of 1980's recruiting...

Hey! It's the offseason!

Gosh...I'm so board...what shall I do?

I know! I can either prognosticate sunshine and butterflies in a land where bees don't ating, or I can masturbate to necromancy porn while thinking of my mother (who was an awful recruiter).

That's what you people look like.

Just drink. Why is that so bad?

Christ.

From Spivey and GC:

The Florida Gators picked up commitment number eight on Wednesday when cornerback Elijah Blades (6-2, 170, Pasadena, CA John Muir) made the call to the Gators.

“First off I want to thank God for blessing me with this opportunity to play at the next level, also I want to thank all the coaches that recruited me up to this time,” Blades said on Twitter. “Also my family for helping me choose this decision but I always had a dream since I was 6 to play in the Swamp and be a part of something great. I’m glad to say that I have a chance to make it a reality but I will be continuing my academic and football career at the University of Florida. #DBU

I like that guy too. Hopefully we keep him when the bigger schools out west come after him, that's always the concern. He can play though.

Anybody remember Jonathan Dowling from a few years back? Never made it because of grades, but he was a sick free safety prospect. That's who Blades reminds me of. I'm wondering if the coaches are planning on keeping him at corner since he's so long, looks like a safety.

I think he's going to be a safety. He recently ran a great 40 time as well. This kid is a great athlete.

I thought I was smelling the roses,,,, until I looked down and realized that I'm standing in yet another pile of D&G BS.... ----- -----:D

We may be getting 2 commitments today. If we get Carter and Miller then this class is shaping up to be very good.

Ten so far, putting in the defensive recruiting work so far with a side splash of offensive playmakers. Whats our projected number of signees this year?
