March Madness

The Gators have won six straight second round appearances, dating back to 2006. Six of UF’s past seven NCAA appearances have gone at least as deep as the Elite Eight, with 2010’s first-round exit the lone exception.

ABOUT THE OPPONENT

• Virginia boasts the nation’s stingiest scoring defense, surrendering just 56.1 points per game. Only one regular season opponent (Clemson) reached 70 points in regulation against the Cavaliers.

• The Cavaliers’ pace of play ranks slowest in the nation at 59 possessions per game, according to KenPom. That limits opponents’ scoring opportunities, as Virginia only allows its foes to take 48.2 field goal attempts per game, fewest in the nation.

• London Perrantes leads Virginia in scoring at 12.9 points per game and has a team-best 125 assists.

• Like Florida, Virginia is a KenPom top-10 team as UF is rated eighth and Virginia ninth.

They have not had him for awhile

Certainly not at full strength. He could only go 14 min. vs the loss to ND in the ACC tour. though got over 20 min. in the win over Pitt the day before. Dominique's boy was gone in 5 min. in the first NCAA tourn. game.

A great reason to go full court as often as possible. Push the tempo, make them uncomfortable.

I just hope we can jump out on them like UNC wilmington did with some 3's early, they wouldn't be able to come back with our defense...

No no no...you didn't watch the game...literally one offensive scorer until half...marginal play from Hill...and Chiozza saved the day.

If two of Hayes, Allen, or Barry don't start knocking down shots in Saturday, there is no way we'll win. That said, it was fun.

NO BEER OR ALCOHOL SOLD IN AMWAY...so beware on Saturday night folks.

UF / ETSU Stats:

UF Team -- FG 25/54 .481 - 3's 7/22 .318 - FT 21/27 .778

Robinson - FG 10/17, 3's 2/5, FT 2/2, 7 RB, 1 Ast, 1 TO, 2 Blk, 24 Pts, 33 Min.

Hill -- FG 5/8, 3's 1/2, FT 3/4, 6 RB, 5 Ast, 4 TO, 2 Stl, 14 Pts, 33 Min
Cheezy - FG 4/5, 3's 2/2, FT 4/5, 5 RB, 3 Ast, 2 TO, 1 Stl, 14 Pts, 23 Min
PG's Combined - 28 Pts, 11 RB, 8 Ast, 6 TO, 3 Stl, 56 Min

Those First 3 Combined: (next time it will likely be 3 others)
FG 19/30, 3's 5/9, FT 9/11, 18 RBs, 7 Ast, 7 TO, 3 Stl, 2 Blk, 52 Pts

Allen -- FG 1/11, 3's 1/9, FT 4/4, 7 RB, 4 Ast, 2 Stl, 7 Pts, 33 Min

Leading Scorers Combined - 14 Pts, 10 Rbs, 5 Ast, 2 TO, 2 Stl, 49 Min
They weren't scoring much, so their contributions came from elsewhere.

Leon -- FG 1/2, 3's 1/2, FT 0, 4 RB, 2 Ast, 2 TO, 1 Stl, 3 Pts, 19 Min
Stone - FG 0/2, 3's 0, FT 0, 3 RB, 7 min

Hayes - FG 2/3, 3's 0, FT 3/4, 7 RB, 2 TO, 2 Blk, 6 Stl, 7 Pts, 28 Min
Gak -- FG 2/2, 3's 0, FT 0/2, 1 RB, 1 TO, 4 Pts, 7 Min

The IMPORTANT stat was -- UF 80 - 65 ETSU. (-15)

The Gators were 1-10 on 3's in the first half, and Hill had the ONLY made 3.
Hill scored 14 pts, while leading scorers Allen and Barry scored 14 pts combined.

Hayes only set a new UF record in an NCAA Tourney game with 6 Steals.

As far as VA's sick forward, PF Stone scored 16 and 17 pts in games before the viral infection took him out for the rest of the season, and losing Egbunu to an ACL is a bit bigger than Va losing a forward to mono.

When the Gators don't make their 3's, they can lose to anyone.
When they make their average 3's they have a chance against anyone.
When they are HOT on their 3's, they can beat a UK by 22 pts.
Against VA, we'll see which Gator team shows up ready to play.

Since Wilkins was a more important and efficient player ( statistically) for Virginia than Egbunu was for UF, and losing Eg a month ago allows for the coaches, and team to adjust, I disagree. Wilkins played about 25% more min/gm, had 55 % FG to Egbunu 49%, had 69% FT to 57%, had 6.2 reb/gm to 6.6 had 7.1pts/gm to 7.7 and 36 assist to 7, 32 stls to 8 , 1.4 blks to 1.5/gm. fewer TO and PF as well. UF is higher scoring team so Wilkins 7.1 contribution was greater. Notwithstanding the stats, the timing is a difference maker. This will hurt UVa.

So Egbunu scored more, rebounded more and blocked more shots playing 3/4 of the minutes? The point is that it's basically a wash and you should quit crying about it.

Disagree all you like, UF lost both C Egbunu rsJr and PF Stone rsFr.

If Va is dying over losing just one guy, then maybe they needed to be using a 'committee forward system' instead of just a '1,000 pt scorer'... ;)

Passive aggressive nole fan.

If we win, NBD, cause UVA had a player missing. If we lose, omg we suck because UVA had a player missing

Snarky, insecure UF fan. If you can't assail the facts.... assail the messenger. Bless your little heart.

Can you play on your own board? Or are you too dim to figure that out?

I am going to guess the later

Dim is saying " he hardley ( sp) played" when he clearly just went down. Dim would be thinking that one of the slowest playing teams losing their all ACC defender and leading rebounder isn't much. Well either dim or simply not knowing the game.

What about the facts that Egbunu scores more rebounds more and blocks more shots in less minutes?

I posted the stats and it does show 1/2 more reb/ gm and also about 1/2 block / gm for Egbunu. With the extreme slow-down style UVa plays, the stat numbers are seriously down as well. Prepare to watch a tedious style from them today.

Looks like easy wins for UK and USCjr as well. I thought Thornwell was a little overrated, but he is balling out in this game.
I love Thornwell. Last year and this year I have been impressed with his all around game. Wish we had him.

Hope the refs let them play today and not blow a whistle at every little touch. Pressing Virginia could work, but they are always a methodical, fundamentally sound team that doesn't run the ball over much and makes you pay for your mistakes. Would really love to see the guys make the Sweet 16.

A tight whistle might favor us, as long as it is for both teams. UVA does not play the kid of offense that gets them to the FT line a lot, but they do play an aggressive, physical defense that puts their opponents on the line. Not dissimilar to the way USCe played us the first time. Or the way Vandy plays

We can't be intimidated by that style of play and we HAVE to make FTs

I don't do well watching the Good Guys play teams that like to take every game to the final possession. I'm probably gonna need to fire up the defibrillator as a precaution for this one.

More damn gray hairs. smh

The seeding is pretty close to meaningless. KU and Nova get MSU and Wisky in the second round.

I'm already nervous and it's still over 3 hours from tip

it's certainly just opened up for us now to make a run if we can get by tonight, get a week to prep for the same type of team instead of Nova... It's all out there and up to the Gator players now...

Leonard Hamilton looking like a total moron on the bench once again come March. I have no idea how he always brings in so much talent, he never develops it. Same old song and dance for FSU - they have really long, tall, and athletic players, but they have never develop any skills.
