Carry over to Gator 2023-24 Basketball :-)

Marshall center transfer Micah Handlogten 7-1 227 elects to continue his basketball career at the University of Florida. The Sun Belt Freshman of the Year in 2022-23 chose the Gators over interest from a plethora of Power Six programs. Last season, he ranked No. 17 in the NCAA in rebounds per game at 9.8, with 2.3 blocks and 1.3 steals.

Priority recruit PG Walter Clayton Jr. 6-2 195 — an Iona transfer who will choose between Florida and St. John's — is scheduled to announce his decision on Tuesday. (the iG continues with his so-far successful crossed-fingers) 😉

Crossed fingers are still working overtime.... 😉

Elite Iona guard transfer and MAAC Player of the Year in 2022-23 Walter Clayton Jr. 6-2 195 will officially head back to his home state of Florida to continue his collegiate career with the Gators, he announced Tuesday.

Clayton will arrive in Gainesville with two years of eligibility remaining. He becomes the third transfer into the program this offseason, joining Micah Handlogten (Marshall) and EJ Jarvis (Yale) as the new faces in the lineup.

I guess they also needed a replacement for Reese's hair... 😉 😁

With 3 ships to fill, I'd like to see 1 dedicated PG and 2 SG/SF types in the Fr or Soph classes, for depth and for future development. But I'd also take another dedicated center if another good one wanted to come....

PF/C Alex Condon 6-10 230, an NBA Global Academy, Australia
Another PF/C prospect, committed to the Gators.
He's another that seems to me to be raw but talented.
He also played Lacrosse and Australian football, so he can run....
Here's a link to a short minute of highlights. -- 24 Pt's, 14 Rb's, 2 Ast's.

You gotta love big guys that can shoot 3's (and actually make some of them -- I still miss the Red Mamba)

I see two things making his xfer to UF less likely.

1. PF/C Tyrese Samuel 6-10 235 - 5th-Yr Sr - Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Already on the roster: - I don't know what the WF roster looks like for 2023?
SF/PF Alex Fudge 6-9 200 Jr
SF/PF Thomas Haugh 6-9 200 Fr
---
PF EJ Jarvis 6-8 220 GradSr
PF/C Aleks Szymczyk 6-10 240 So
PF/C Alex Condon 6-10 230 Fr
---
C Micah Handlogten 7-1 227 So

2. "Samuel will be a fifth-year guy, so he may not want to split time as a sixth or seventh man off the bench."

I'd really rather have another Fr/So dedicated PG and a couple of SG/SF types, but IF he really wanted to be a Gator, I'd prolly take him for the 1 year that he has to play....
My question is, how many BIG's can the 23 roster hold or use???

Charlotte center Aly Khalifa will be on campus for an official visit with the Gators beginning on April 15. Khalifa is an international talent, who is originally from Egypt. At 6-11 220 he dominated the post in the Conference USA with the 49ers for two years. He’s a strong passer and shot 38.1% from three-point range last season, and he won the 2021-22 Conference USA Freshman of the Year Award.

https://gatorswire.usatoday.com/202...l-transfer-portal-aly-khalifa-official-visit/

So which one would you take, or both???

PF/C Tyrese Samuel 6-10 235 5th-Sr
C Aly Khalifa 6-11 220 Jr

How does this strike you for a possible 2023 Gator Roster?

PG Walter Clayton Jr 6-2 195 Jr - MAAC Player of the Year in 2022-23
PG Will Richard 6-4 206 Jr - Ohio Valley Conf 2021-22 All-Newcomer Team
PG Jack May 6-4 195 rsJr - WO

SG Riley Kugel 6-5 207 So - Fr All SEC - Projected to NBA draft, but returns.
SG Denzel Aberdeen 6-5 189 So - High-IQ 4-star 2X FAB-Coaches All-State
SG Alex Klatsky 6-4 206 rsSr - WO

SF EJ Jarvis 6-8 220 Grad-Sr - A 3X Ivy League Champion @ Yale.
SF Alex Fudge 6-9 200 Jr - A 4-star HS 'Sports Illustrated' All American
CANCEL FUDGE, HE'S DECLARING FOR THE NBA DRAFT

SF Thomas Haugh 6-9 200 Fr - 4-star

PF Tyrese Samuel 6-10 235 - 5th-Sr - 2022 11 Pts, 6 Rbs, 1 Blk (if he commits to UF)
PF Aleks Szymczyk 6-10 240 So - 2022 deep depth Fr, 14 Gms, 3.3 Min/Gm
PF Alex Condon 6-10 230 Fr - NBA Global B-Ball, Aus-football, Lacrosse

C Micah Handlogten 7-1 227 So - Sun Belt Fr of Year
C Aly Khalifa 6-11 220 Jr - Conf-USA Fr of Year (if he commits to UF)

With 1 (or 2-3) open ships remaining....

I suspect we will use a 3 guard lineup. Kugel and Richard will be our top players so you want them on the floor together. Clayton is the only true PG we have. Need another one of those. Fudge most likely at forward and Handlogten at center. Curious to see who else we can get from portal.

Not looking to disagree on PG's, but they actually have 3 PG's on the roster already.

From last years preseason article there's this:
Denzel Aberdeen Position Guard Height 6-5 189 Class Freshman Hometown Orlando, Fla. High School Dr. Phillips. I believe that his height at 6-5 and his shooting ability put him as a CG for recruiting purposes, but he played the point in HS, with SG Kugel as his teammate on their State Championship team....

With Kyle Lofton and Trey Bonham's profiles completed, next up is the man occupying the final point guard spot on the Gators depth chart, true freshman Denzel Aberdeen.

Aberdeen, remaining firm in his pledge to suit up for the Gators after discussions with Golden affirmed his decision was still the right one. Arriving as the newcomer in the Gators' backcourt, Aberdeen will likely see the floor minimally, if at all, in the upcoming year. While at one time it looked as if he could step into the starting (PG) role due to need, the transfers who have slid in front of him on the depth chart will get the ball rolling on the Golden era.

Go to his UF Roster Bio and you can get a better idea on his talents.

His prowess as a scorer is the promising tool he carries in his bag when that time arrives. However, his ability to do the little things — facilitate and defend — have flashed signs of potential. The limb length and rare height at his disposal for someone occupying the one spot will aid his progression, specifically on the defensive end. Able to excel in a fast-paced system at Dr. Phillips, Aberdeen’s core talents equip him to take on the starting point guard role when the likes of Lofton and Bonham move on. That endeavor may take a year or two, but time is on their side. Luckily, so is Aberdeen’s skill level.

Because Golden has now brought in another PG Walter Clayton, an experienced Jr, it looks like Aberdeen might be shifted again to PG/SG with SG/SF Kugel for the coming season. (which is what I did in my projected roster above, but I wouldn't mind seeing them with a 6-5 PG that can score from every level).

And this guy can also run the point IF he's needed to do so.
PG Jack May 6-4 195 rsJr - WO
Golden, in the past, has been known to play his WO's when needed...

Aberdeen played point in high school but not sure he can handle that role in a power 5 conference. Didn't see enough of him this past season. Like his height for sure. No offense to Jack May, but if he's getting significant playing time it will be another long season for hoops. I still think Golden is looking for another point via the portal. But if not then we roll with who we have...still have 3 spots I believe.

Overview
  • Saw time in 12 games as a freshman while developing behind a pair of fifth-year ball-handlers.
  • High-IQ, versatile combo guard who wants the ball in big moments.
  • Rated a four-star prospect by ESPN and Rivals.

2022-23, Freshman Season
  • Scored 19 points in 12 appearances (1.6 ppg) throughout his freshman campaign.
  • Played a season-high nine minutes in the regular season finale, a Florida win vs. LSU.
  • Scored a season-best six points vs. UCF in the NIT and added four points against Stetson.

Prep
  • Twice named Florida Association of Basketball Coaches (FABC) all-state, earning first team in 2021 and second team in 2022.
  • Scored 27 points in the 2021 7A state championship game, leading Dr. Phillips to its first state championship in program history.
  • Helped Dr. Phillips return to the state championship game again in 2022.
  • Averaged 14.4 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists his senior season.
I never thought that Jack May would be the starting PG, but he can spot play if needed.

And was it a mistake for Golden to use Trey Bonham at PG, instead of getting PG Denzel Aberdeen some quality playing time at the point, seeing as how Trey bolted after 1 year?

SF/PF Alex Fudge to declare for the NBA Draft.

Florida forward Alex Fudge, who spent just one year with the program after transferring from LSU, informed Florida coaches on Thursday that he plans forego his remaining collegiate eligibility and declare for the upcoming NBA Draft, multiple sources familiar with the development told Swamp247.
(as the iG is ROTF-LMFAO)

Another mistake along those same lines imoho.
Felder out, so Fudge could play and then bolt after one sub-standard year....

Fudge is just putting his name in to get evaluated. I don’t believe he is hiring an agent and will likely be back.

He might want learn a few new languages.
Yep - Several ex-Gators have made very good money playing BB overseas. Malcolm Cesare, Scottie Wilbekin, Kevarrius Hayes, Kenny Boynton, Chris Chiozza, Walter Hodge, Jalen Hudson, just to name a few.

That doesn't sound like he's coming back to me....

High-choice Gators N.Tx transfer portal target PG Tylor Perry 5-11 182 is prioritizing eight schools in his recruitment: Alabama, Arkansas, Baylor, Florida, Louisville, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss and Texas Tech. He was the C-USA PoY
17.3 Pts on 43.7% FG's, 41.3% 3's, 2.1 Ast, 3.4 Rbs. - From Ft. Coffee, OK
N.Tx won the NIT and Perry was the awarded the NIT MVP.

Florida has added just one guard to the roster after seeing three depart (Jones-Lofton-Bonham) from a season ago. Walter Clayton Jr., an Iona transfer who recently announced his pledge to the Gators. He has the capacity to serve as the primary ball handler at the one if needed, but is naturally a two-guard at the collegiate level.

BTW -- With the departure of Fudge, UF still has 4 open ships...

PG - Ball handler that sets the pace, brings the ball up, and is the facilitator (assists).
SG - The shooting guard is mainly responsible for outside shooting and is usually relied upon as a primary scoring option. They are also key rebounders and defenders, as well as secondary ball-handlers. (points)
SF's are typically shorter, quicker, and leaner than PF's and centers but taller, larger, and stronger than either of the guard positions. They are strategic and are often relied upon to score, defend, create open lanes, and rebound for their team.
=====

CG Combination Guards are splitting the PG / SG slots.
All 7 of these guys could play either PG or SG, with 2-3 that could also play the SF position.

CG Tylor Perry 5-11 182 Sr - C-USA PoY & NIT Champion + MVP (if he comes)
-----

CG Walter Clayton Jr 6-2 195 Jr - MAAC Player of the Year in 2022-23
CG/SF Will Richard 6-4 206 Jr - Ohio Valley Conf 2021-22 All-Newcomer Team
CG/SF Denzel Aberdeen 6-5 189 So - High-IQ 4-star 2X FAB-Coaches All-State, FL 7A Champ
CG/SF Riley Kugel 6-5 207 So - Fr All SEC - Projected to NBA draft, but returns, FL 7A Champ

PG Jack May 6-4 195 rsJr - WO
SG Alex Klatsky 6-4 206 rsSr - WO

I'm making no guesses on how the next team performs, who plays which positions, or who will still be on the roster by the start of next season, much less who the starters might be....

I like the Perry kid. Would love to have him. Gives us instant depth at the point. If Fudge is indeed gone then it will be interesting to see how we line up.

Not knocking what we’re doing, but I’m curious as to whether there are any examples of a Power 5 team taking this many mid-major transfers and having a successful season? Say top 5 in conference.

Good depth piece. Glad to see we are adding size. We've been lacking depth in size for the past 4 or so years.
I’d be shocked if he doesn’t start at the 4. He’s coming in with the expectation and experience of being more than just a depth piece. With him and Hangleton we should have lots of size in the front court now so hopefully this resolves our poor rebounding from this past year.

Kansas St this year and Baylor last year. I do think you can be more successful using the transfer portal in basketball than football just because of sheer quantity of players that are needed in basketball (smaller roster size). And as you can see and judging by the tourney these mid majors are very very competitive so lots of good players out there. I’m not a proponent of year after year taking a whole bunch of guys and would still prefer high school prospects but I think for now this was the best way for Golden to put together a roster considering the roster when he got it was a mess. So far IMO he’s picked up 3 starters and 1 depth piece in the portal and likely going to add another. We will see how it goes.

Arguably the hottest run on the college basketball transfer portal trail continues for the Gators as Seton Hall transfer Tyrese Samuel has elected to team up with Todd Golden and Co. at Florida. The center prospect from Montreal, Quebec, Canada, chose UF over Wake Forest via social media on Sunday night.

Standing at 6-foot-10, 235 pounds, Samuel is a talented scorer on the inside, accounting for 11 points per game on 55% from the floor for the Pirates a season ago. He added 5.9 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game to provide an intriguing, veteran portal prospect for center-needy teams.

SF/PF EJ Jarvis 6-8 220 Grad-Sr - A 3X Ivy League Champion @ Yale.
SF/PF Thomas Haugh 6-9 200 Fr - 4-star

PF/C Tyrese Samuel 6-10 235 - 5th-Sr - 2022 11 Pts, 6 Rbs, 1 Blk

SG Blue Cain 6-4 170 fits the bill for the Gators are trying to obtain as they work on rounding out their 2023-24 roster, which has just three remaining scholarship vacancies. Ranked No. 89 overall, No. 12 among shooting guards and No. 9 in the state of Florida in the 2023 recruiting cycle.

Like what Golden has done in the portal. Now let's see if we can get them to play has a cohesive unit. Baylor won a natty with 5 transfer players starting.

Last preseason, everyone here pretty much agreed that the new guy needed to at least make it to the Big Dance to call the season a success. Instead he had a losing season and went one-&-done at home to UCF in the NIT.

So, what does everyone think he needs to do in the coming season, to call it a successful season this time around?

My very humble opinion is he should be a short leash. The offense improved slightly, about 1 point per game, and did look better most of the time vs recent past years, but at times they looked less enthusiastic. We were constantly digging ourselves into deep holes then trying to climb out the last 10-15 min of games. I still think he needs to make the tourney. That is a bare min.

Mike took over Billy's last losing season 16-17 team and went 21-15 and the NIT Quarter Final, all away games.

Todd took over Mike's last winning 20-14 team, had a losing season, went 16-17 and 1 & Done @ home NIT

Mike never had a losing season, made a Tourney every year, and he never went 1 & Done in NCAA or NIT.
But no matter, haters still gonna hate..... 🙄
==========

UGly 2021-22 - 6-26, 1-17 SEC -- Home 6-13, Away 0-10, Neu 0-3
After years of losing seasons, coach fired and Mike White hired.

UGA 2022-23 - 16-16, 6-12 SEC -- Home 13-4, Away 1-10, Neu 2-2
One & Done SEC-T

They had as many SEC wins as they had total wins the year before Mike arrived....

IF Mike makes the NCAA next season,,, and Todd doesn't, then what???
