Florida will join Baylor, Pitt and Oregon State as headlining acts in the 2023-24 Preseason NIT.
Florida is freshly removed from an underwhelming first season under new leader Todd Golden. Despite finishing the year with a record of 16-17, UF witnessed a fair share of peaks and troughs.

However, first-round exits from the SEC Tournament and NIT created a stale end to a season that saw the Gators on the bubble for NCAA Tournament play in February.

After 9 roster departures to begin the offseason, Golden and Co. will boast a drastically different version of its team in the upcoming year. Three scholarship openings remain and are expected to be filled by another ball handler in the backcourt and two versatile wing prospects.
As 247's Crystal Ball predicted, PG Tylor Perry 5-11 182 Sr chose KSt.

Will this be the new starting lineup in 2023-24???
PG Walter Clayton Jr 6-2 195 Jr - Iona 23 xfer
SG/SF Riley Kugel 6-5 207 So ---- Orlando, Fl 22 HS
SF/SG Will Richard 6-4 206 Jr --- Belmont 22 xfer
PF EJ Jarvis 6-8 220 Grad-Sr ---- Yale 23 xfer
C Micah Handlogten 7-1 227 So - Marshall 23 xfer

Well last year they ranked us at 9th and we stunk it up....so if this holds true we are in for a long season. Looking back at last years rankings Arky was highly ranked then as well.

To me,,,, the 2023-24 season is a lot more about Golden & staff's coaching ability, than it is about HS recruit stars, or xfer portal rankings.

Why would I say that?

Because the Gator's 1st B-Ball NC began with UF ranked at #32 in the Preseason Rankings, and the only 5-star on the team was MickyD-AA Corey Brewer... 🤓

We better hope he can coach, because so far his recruiting has been less than stellar.

Not seeing the comparison at all. Horford, Noah and Green were all 4 stars. And the team already had 4-star Chris Richard plus Humphrey who was a three star but without a doubt one of the great shooters in college history. Those guys probably played a combined 50 years in the NBA.

Given all that, Billy D was maybe the biggest reason that team became what it was but the current roster is not in the same ballpark as far as talent/athleticism.

I’ve been extremely critical of Golden’s recruiting, but he did well in the portal this year. And we’re starting to see more interest from top high schoolers, so he’s got a little momentum. I thought he coached pretty good last year, getting a .500 league record out of that roster, which was awful.

BG, everyone is allowed their own opinions, with or without anything to back them up, made up, or otherwise.... 😉

At the close of last season, 9 players from what you call a 9-9 SEC AWFUL decided to leave the team, 3 had to (eligibility expended), but 6 more chose to leave. I Wonder Why?
And of those 6 that left, how many were brought in by Todd?

4 of those 'AWFUL TEAM' players chose to stay (3 of the 4 were Todd's chosen), plus the 2 'don't play' WO's.

I'm pretty sure that except for Kowacie Reeves (GA Tech), all of our other transfers dropped down to non-P5 schools. They simply weren't good enough for major college basketball. But there's no doubt that the 2023-24 team IS Todd Golden's. Time will tell if he knows what he's doing, but he'll be given at least 2 more years to prove himself.

None of the kids that transferred out were game changers. Reeves was just way too inconsistent. Maybe a different scheme will benefit him.

Now, that doesn't seem like a positive to me, and several of them were brought in by Todd last year....

NO BG, I won't do your research for you, to carry on a discussion about the former HC vs the 'new & improved' HC,,,, but you are welcome to do some more research on your claims for yourself.

However, Golden inherited a winning team that never had a losing season or gone one & done in the post season, while White inherited a team that had 6 wins, and only 1 SEC win, in the prior season, which is not only true but is actually relevant.... 🙄

Now, before anyone starts yet again, I don't GaS what Mike White does at UGly.
And I hope that Golden eventually can put together a quality STUDENT/athlete winning team, that also shows solid individual personal character off the court... 🤓

Mike white inherited from Billy D: Chiozza; DRob; Dorian Finney Smith; K. Allen and Kasey Hill.

Are those guys better than what White left for Golden?

Recruiting isn't everything, and a great coach can still do some damage with classes a bit down the rankings. But in a movie where a person enters a highly secured area, passing multiple checkpoints to get there, recruiting is the first checkpoint. Without it, teams struggle to compete at the highest levels, and it's nearly impossible to win at those levels consistently without highly ranked recruiting classes. (iG says BS)

What the I-wish-dog-poker and a few idiot-others have never understood, is that there is a subtle difference between recruiting great players that fit your school and system, and having players that are highly rated by some outside recruit ranking service.

You need great players to win. = True
You have to have highly ranked players and/or classes to win. = False

Dabo/Clemson's NC's being the best example of the difference.
(Tennis-sea results is the inverse)

Further proof is when a Top school/coach gets an offer/commit, that players rankings often jumps up a level shortly after, showing that the ranking follows the coaches offer.
i.e. A 4-star commits to a CFP finalist and soon jumps up to a 5-star.
While a 5-star commits to OreSt and later on drops down to a 4-star.

And that slip and slide outside ranking is how the outside recruit rankers try to convince people that it's their ranking, not the recruits talent, that makes the difference. It's part of how the ranking services make their talking season money and get kids into their paid for camps.

5-stars still wash-out, while 3-stars still go in the early rounds of the NFL draft.
It's the player/coach combination that matters, not the outside recruit ranking.

In this SWAMP 247 article,

UK is #14 in the SEC for recruit/class rankings, but finished #4 SECe and 4.5 SEC overall.

UF is #7
in the SEC for recruit/class ranking, but finished #5 SECe, and 5 SEC overall.
Sumtingfunky wid-de recrut rankings vs the on field results thingy....

You PRECISELY based entire War and Peace novels on all the stars UF was getting on their teams to display how UF was superior to other teams….. THAT is the whole effing reason you’ve been in my siggy, ya moron!

Every single person who have been on this board 9+ years KNOWS what your MO has been in the past. You stating this obvious statement is the final height of irony …. Here's to the iG hoping that Brown in another of those hard working under-rated 3-stars, because Coaching/Learning/Progressing is what matters, not star rankings....

The projected 2023-24 backcourt so far:

PG Walter Clayton Jr 6-2 195 Jr - 2023 Iona xfer-in (NR recruit, 4-star xfer)
SG Riley Kugel 6-5 207 So - Orlando - Dr Phillips State Champ 4-star
CG Will Richard 6-4 206 Jr - 2022 Belmont xfer-in (3-star recruit, 4-star xfer)
CG Denzel Averdeen 6-5 189 So - Orlando - Dr Phillips State Champ 4-star
Denzel played a little in 12 Gms as a Fr behind a pair of 5th Yr PG's, scoring 19 season Pts.
He played a season-high 9 Min. in the regular season finale, a Florida win vs. LSU.
He scored a season-best 6 Pts vs. UCF in the 'One & Done' NIT loss, to end a losing season.
Denzel
scored 27 Pts in the FL 7A State Championship game.... 😲
A high-IQ, versatile combo guard who wants the ball in big moments.

2022-23 Backcourt Gonzo's - Jones, Lofton, Reese, Bonham, & Lane.

-----
#22 SG Isaiah Brown 6-5 185 - UF's 1st 2024 commit (a 3-star recruit)
(an attempt at a replacement for xfer's-out Reeves & Lane, and for likely NBA bound Kugel in 24).

PS - It's the iG's belief that your starters should come from your own evaluated and chosen HS recruits, with the portal used to fill out a hole in the depth chart, or as an occasional emergency replacement.
Building/rebuilding 1/2 of a team yearly from the portal is not the championship way to go long term imo...

2 of the 4 final 4 teams this year relied heavily on transfers. I believe SDSU’s entire team transferred. Should we just file this under “shows how much the iG knows”?

Naw, but you can file it under the heading of dudlygoater believes in forming a brand new team of all xfers yearly, as a solid path to the Gator's next B-Ball NC.... 😂 🤣 😂

(see, I know now to hyperbole too)

Baylor won the natty 2 years ago with 5 transfer starters. Zags were runner up with 4 transfer starters. Personally, I hate what the portal has done. But the reality in college hoops is you can build a final 4 team quickly via the portal. I would rather do it via high school recruiting.

Sorry, but naming the couple of teams that did well with portal xfers,,, while conveniently leaving out all of the many high sfer teams that didn't do well, or totally sucked, is not making your xfer point with me....

What's the difference in results? The portal xfer players, or the coaching staffs developing them, and putting together a winning cohesive team???
