2021-22 Basketball Primer

21 assists to 8 turnovers tonight was awesome. Castleton had another double double with 19/10, Duruji 12/7, Appleby had 14 with 5 assists and Fleming scored 12.

We will get a good test here coming up barring a real big upset to Cal as Ohio State and Seton Hall look to be teams that could be top 4 type seeds in the tourney I would think.

I took my boys to the game tonight. Small crowd which was disappointing. This team plays with high energy and they are tenacious on defense. Good communication. We aren't a very good shooting team, but we go hard on the boards and get a lot second chance opportunities. Love what I'm seeing so far.

Great game!! We are looking good so far. Did Tuon Gatgek play since it was such a huge blowout?
Always right on top of any and every subject...
The announcers says Gatkek was sick and unavailable. Several of the players have been battling the flu.
=====

This guy is just too skinny to play big time basketball.

UF #32 PF Toungthach Gatkek 6-9 172
FG's 1-2 50%, 2 Rbs, in 9 Min's.

Those skinny/under-weight rules don't seem to apply to everyone though, just Gators.

FSU #22 PF John Butler 7-1 190
He scored 8 Pts vs UF.

Time to spin the diss back to the perceived talent/stars I'm guessing....
=====

We aren't a very good shooting team,
2021 first 3 Gms shooting:
Gator FG - 42.9% - 3's 33.3% - FT 64.9%
Opp's FG - 35.8% - 3's 29.8% - FT 59.6%

Terrible shooting team vs UMW
FG 47.1%- 3's 39.3% - FT 75.0%

Scoring/shooting comes in spurts at times. But even players who didn’t fill it up on the offensive end made noticeable contributions away from the basket. Brandon McKissic and Myreon Jones, for example, each finished with 7 Pts, but the duo also combined for 11 Rb's and 7 Ast's.

The Gators currently rank 16th in the Nation in adjusted defensive efficiency.

And now,,,, back to the peanut gallery's B-Ball genius posting... 🙄

We are currently 212th in field goal percentage...that's right, 212. As I said, we aren't a very good shooting team. But we make up for it with defense and hustle. Your stats even show we aren't very good.

CG/SF Phlandrous Fleming Jr 6-5 205. He is what Lewis was supposed to be coming out of HS but never was, as mostly a Gator 5-star bust...

https://floridagators.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/phlandrous-fleming-jr-/14516

Where Phlan is at right now....

He just hasn't been able to unleash his jack-of-all-trades game — "The guy is a Swiss army knife," Pastrana said — because of his health mishaps to date. On the positive side, they've been minor; on the even more positive side, they're almost gone, which means his ability to be a shot-maker, rebound down from the guard spot and defend (if needed) all five positions has only scratched the surface in his short time wearing a Florida uniform.

"We get 110 percent off Phlan no matter if it's 'Sick Phlan,' 'Groin Phlan' or 'Whatever Phlan,' " fellow grad-transfer Brandon McKissic said. "There's a lot more coming, you just wait. That's a bad dude, right there."

"Our fans haven't seen how good he is or how crazy competitive he is,"
White said. "They will."

Gators up 46-27 over Cal at the half. It was close the first 8-10 minutes, but the Gator defense kept getting stops and the shooters started lighting it up. 6-11 shooting 3's, 50% from the field, 14-15 from the free throw line. Outrebounding them 17-12, held them to 1 assist on 7 turnovers, while we have 6 assists and 4 turnovers. Ohio State beat Seton Hall by 2 in the earlier game, so hope we can close the deal on this game and then go after the Buckeyes Wednesday night.

The Gators suffocating defense has yet to allow more than 61 points to any opponent, including Top 25 ranked FSUcks. The Gators continued to show their firepower on the offensive end, eclipsing the 80-point mark for the 2nd time this season, something they did only 6 times all of last season. .
4 Gms -- FG 44.8% - 3's 35.0%, FT 70.5%, with steady improvements.

They went on to win 80-60, earning their 17th 20-point victory against a P-5 conference opponent in the Mike White era. As a result, 6 different Gators have eclipsed the double-digit mark at one point this season.

In the end, 10 different Gators found the scoring column vs P-5 Cal on the way to shooting FG 51.9%, 3's 42.1%, and FT 85.7%, and still getting better...

SEASON
Blocks: UF 29 -- 13 Opp's
Rebounds: UF 160 -- Opp's 131
Steals: UF 34 -- Opp's 27
Ast/T-O:
UF 58-49 (1.18) -- Opp's 34-62 (0.55)

Twelve players appeared in the contest vs Cal, with all playing at least 4 minutes.

Boston College transfer PF CJ Felder continued to see an uptick in minutes after playing just 14 total in the first 2 games. Following a 15-minute outing against Milwaukee in a big win, Felder played 17 against Cal. as he continues to pick up the offensive sets. He shot 67% from the arc, going 2/3, while he showed off solid athleticism and energy, flashing a versatile game on the defensive end of the floor.

BTW - Not too bad for such a poor shooting team vs P-5 Cal....
FG - 51.9% --- 3's - 42.1% --- FT 85.7%

Castleton 16 Pts
Appleby 15 Pts
Jones 13 Pts
Fleming 11 Pts
PF's Duruji & Felder combined for 15 Pts, 6 Rbs, 2 Asts, 1 Blk

Coming into tonights game:
UF has 4 players averaging double digit Pts, with Castleton at 17.0 PPG.
tOSU has 1 player averaging 22.4 Pts, with no others averaging double figures....

KenPom Rankings for 2021-22:

19. UF Offensive Efficiency 8. OSU (+11)
15. UF Defensive Efficiency 49. OSU (-34)
221. UF Adjusted Tempo 266. OSU (-45)

Trivia: During Coach Mike White's 1st season with the Gators, they went to Columbus and beat the Bucs 74-66 in 2nd-round NIT play. That Mike White win was the only true road victory against a Big Ten opponent in UF basketball history.

Early Season Trivia

Current Sagarin Ranking - SoS - Top 50 Ranked opponents:

11. LSU - 306 - Zero Top 50's

12. UA - 172 - Zero Top 50's

17. UK - 289 - 0-1 Top 25

26. UF - 225 - 1-0 Top 25

27. TN - 110 - 0-1 Top 25

35. Ark - 197 - Zero Top 50's

38. AU - 311 - Zeor Top 50's

40. MsSt - 335 - Zero Top 50's

So far among the SEC's 8 Top 50 Sagarin Ranked Teams:

UF is the only SEC team with a Top 50 win, beating 15. FSU

UK & TN have both lost to a Top 25 Team.
And the other 5 have yet to even play a Top 50 Sagarin ranked team.

Ohio State up 30-26 on the Gators at halftime. Florida had a 22-17 lead with about 4 minutes left, but the Buckeyes went on a run to close out the half. UF's defense has been great, forcing 10 turnovers. But the Buckeyes are shooting 48% from the field and have made 6 of 9 free throws. We haven't been able to stop E.J. Liddell, who has 13 points on 5-7 from the field. Meanwhile, Florida is shooting horribly, 31% from the field, 1-9 shooting 3's and only 7-12 from the free throw line. We only have 2 assists to 6 turnovers, meaning the ball movement hasn't been very good so far. We're getting outrebounded 19-16, and they've blocked 5 of our shots and we've blocked none. Castleton has only 5 points, 2-5 from the field and 1-4 from the free throw line. 9 Gators have played so far, 8 have scored and Fleming leads us with 8 points. Hopefully, White will make some halftime adjustments and the team will shoot it better the 2nd half. Need to control Liddell better.

I just knew that the hated Schmuckeyes were going to give us hell tonight.
They've been UF's doormat in both football and basketball recently.

Beat them in NC games in both sports in the same season, 2006.
Football 41 - 14 ----- Basketball 84 - 75

Tonight UF 71 - 68 tOSU (on a 3 at the buzzer)
That might have been the most fun win, because all night they figured to finally be going to get a win over those nasty Gators. Nay-Nay-Na-Nay-Nay.....
😝

Off nights shooting are going to happen, just like scoring runs in games happen, but with an every game suffocating defense and a TEAM no quit attitude, you can still win some games when you mostly sucked shooting the ball, and probably should have lost....

They didn't shoot well and missed a bunch of free throws, but the defense kept it close and they made the plays down the stretch to win the game. Great win for the Gators. This team is tough and tenacious and I look forward to seeing how they grow together as the season progresses. Excellent win.

Led by Phlandorus Fleming Jr’s two-way brilliance, the Gators were able to overcome a poor shooting night for the team — at under 37% for the contest — and hoist themselves over the Buckeyes.

Fleming accounted for 19 points, 3 steals and 2 rebounds in 33 valuable minutes for the Gators, off the bench. Making up for a slow night for leading scorer Colin Castleton, 11 points and 13 rebounds, Fleming proved why he was so highly regarded when in the transfer portal from Charleston Southern. (What does a Phlan 'Hot Hand' look like? 19 Pts on 5 of 11 + 9 of 10 FT's)

Florida has seen a new face produce heavily in the scoring department in each game this season, a testament to their depth, maturity and unselfishness to defer to the hot hand.

~~ The Addition (this season's roster) through Subtraction (last season's roster) continues unabated.... (iG)
They consistently turned defense into offense and made up for a poor team shooting performance with their team effort to score easy buckets in transition off turnovers.
(18 T-O's including 13 Steals)

@Efawcett7
"Mike White had an absolutely brilliant play call to tie the game. After running the same dribble drive gap play twice earlier in the second half, in the final minute he runs a counter to it that’s a Tyree Appleby alley-oop lob to Anthony Duruji. Really, really good coaching."

The 2nd part to that great coaching effort by White, in iG's opinion, was by NOT calling a final seconds time out, but letting 1 for 9 Appleby take and make that game winning 3.

"It was like a movie, honestly," Appleby said about 20 minutes after being mobbed by his teammates and 10 minutes after posing for a group shot with the tournament championship trophy. "Once I hit it, I looked up and my teammates were right there on me. It was one of the best moments of my college career … of my life, actually."

RB - UF 35 --- OSU 33

JMOHO, but this game would not have been this close, if the officials had called all of the blatant fouls committed by the thugs of tOSU. Sorry, but they just weren't very good at their job that night....

This is a great write-up imo.

And in Rebounding, 52, 10.4 Rbs/Gm - Averaging a Double-Double so far, but he also leads the team in Turnovers 13, because it gets pretty busy in the paint. But that also means that Colin leads the team in Blks (15) for 1/2 of the Gators total Blks (31)

Jones

McKissic leads the team in Steals with 9.

I'd like to keep this thread open for the whole season so we can keep up with everybody's running comments. Thanks to INSTA for getting it started. As for the Troy game, excellent defense once again. They shot it so great the first half, the guys got complacent the 2nd half and quit working it inside much. But it didn't matter today because the defense was so good. 84-45 the final. 13 guys played for us, 10 scored, 6 in double figures. 13 assists to 15 turnovers was not good, but we held them to 8 assists and 21 turnovers. Shot 44% for the field, 34% from the 3 point line, 17-19 from the free throw line. They continue to share the ball, look for the open man and just smother the other team on defense, giving up very few open or easy shots. Excellent game against a team that came in 4-1. On to Oklahoma Wednesday night.

UF up to #14 in the latest AP poll.
Big jump in the polls. Oklahoma is not ranked, but is 6-1 with their lone loss coming in Conway, South Carolina to Utah State by 3 points. They shoot 50% from the field and average almost 17 assists to 13 turnovers per game, averaging 76 points while allowing only 59. Their leading scorer is 6'10" 235 lb. senior transfer Tanner Groves from Eastern Washington, where he was Big Sky MVP last year. They have 2 senior guards, Umoja Gibson & Jordan Goldwire, who average in double figures. Their other 2 starters are junior forward Jalen Hill and senior guard Elijah Harkless. They also have a freshman guard and junior forward who get double digit minutes per game. Playing on their court, this will be a test for the Gators, especially in regards to defending their big man.

In all six games to start this season, Florida has had at least 4 players score in double digits. The Gators saw 6 players score 10+ against Troy, a component in their season-high 84 points.

10 Castleton
10 Appleby
10 McKissic
11 Duruji
11 Fleming
12 Jones
The Gators proved that their offensive identity isn’t reliant on the impact of one individual in dominant fashion. This resembles what having RB's by committee, or having 7-9 receivers with a reception in a game gives you in football.
While Castleton and Felder added 2 blocked shots each.

Florida will travel to Norman, Okla. for their first true road game of the season against the 6-1 Choke-la-homo Swooners Wednesday at 8 p.m.

Vs Troy -- Starters Plus the rotating 6th Man:
Jones-Appleby-Fleming-McKissic--Castleton-Duruji

Complaint - Took foot off gas in 2nd half and played sloppy.

Reality - Resting starters and playing the bench in the 2nd half, getting the younger bench players game time.

17 Min Fleder FG 1/1, 3's 0/2, FT 0, 2 RB, 2 Blk, 1 Stl, 2 Pts (7th man)

13 Min Reeves FG 1/2, 3's 2/6, FT 0, 2 RB, 2 TO, 1 Stl, 8 Pts
12 Min Kennedy FG 0/1, 3's 2/4, FT 0, 2 RB, 0 TO, 1 Stl, 6 Pt
7 Min Jitoboh FG 0/0, 3's 0/1, FT 0, 2 RB, 0 Pts
6 Min Gatkek FG 0/1, 3's 0/1, FT 0, 1 RB, 0 Pts
5 Min Lane FG 0, 3's 0, FT 2/2, 3 RB, 1 Ast, 1 TO, 2 Pts

There is always a trade off between getting your starters more gel time, and getting your backups and/or next years guys some playing time.
This also weakens the stats for things like team shooting %, etc.
But those stats are not as important as the long term team development imo.

This is true. Any game that you lead by thirty points in the second half you should unload the bench. What most posters are complaining about is letting up on the offense to run clock with 8-10 minutes left. Case in point last year’s second round game against Oral Roberts. They were clearly winded having only 7 rotational players. They got some rest and we never got back in the groove. CMW clearly has learned from that (note theFSU game)

Nick, in that Oral Roberts game, the officials stuck it to the Gators imo.
OR came in as one of the best FT shooting teams in the nation.
Go check the fouls called on UF vs those called on OR, and you will come away with the key to that game.

Side note: What do you call 2 gays named Bob?
Oral Roberts...
😁
-----

Does being called a poor shooting team make any sense, or really matter this season?

Of UF's 6 consecutive wins to begin the season:
5 have been by double digits;
4 by 20+,
and 2 by 36+.
While half (3) of those 6 wins have come vs Power-5 Teams:
FSU/ACC -- Cal/Pac12 -- tOSU/Big-10/12, with @ Okla/Big-12 up next....
Mike White's OoC SoS's are annually, the toughest in the SEC, and in UF history.

Some fans gloss over, or totally ignore that fact when judging Mike's HC'ing performance. And they usually do the same when considering the long injuries list he's had to deal with in previous years....
Mike is a much better HC than he's been given credit for being so far imo.

=====

On recruiting for the coming season, I'm hoping that he can again use the xfer's to fill the 4 open ship slots, with guys like the last 4-5 he's taken, instead of rolling the dice on all HS recruits. The 3 that he's already signed for this class + 4 xfers would fill out next season's roster with young quality & older experience.

#17 PF Jalen Reed 6-10 220 **** Natl 89 - Castaic, CA
#3 PF Malik Reneau 6-8 210 ***** Natl 25 - Montverde, FL

Wish List on iG's xfer's: A true C, a SF, and a couple more CG's....

In 6+ years at UF, how many games has Mike White lost when leading in the last 5 minutes of a game?

Know that first, and then get back to me on taking a foot off the gas and then losing the game because of it....

One does not equal the other.

If you haven't. In the past. Seen a marked difference in offensive approach when starting the half with a double-digit lead, then you are being disingenuous.

but that's okay, you don't know basketball. You know stats and coaching awards and basketball, but as per usual, you don't know how that relates to the infield product.
