2021-22 Basketball Primer

They took their foot off the gas peddle again.
They looked sloppy in the 2nd half.
They only won by 13 points.

No, this is what happened....
Florida men’s basketball got off to a fine start to its 2021-22 campaign on Tuesday night with a win over the Elon Phoenixes in the O’Connell Center, 74-61. The Gators absolutely dominated the first half and then used its tidy 23-point cushion to empty the bench in the season opener.

What's more important for the team? To beat the snot outta Elon and win
90 to 50, or to continue to develop the young and/or inexperienced against an over-matched opponent?

McKissic led the team in scoring with 20 Pt's in the Exhibition game.
Jones led the team with 20 Pt's vs Elon.
Showing that in each game, a different player can be the star/leader.
While most of them continue to be steady, hard working performers from game to game, like Duruji's 10 Pt's, 7 Rb's....

And as I've been saying since the end of last season. -- "There’s an argument to be made that the team came out the other side looking better than when the offseason began." -- The iG's 'addition by subtraction'...
=====

On opponents double teaming Castleton:

"Castleton is very much a throwback post player. He wants to get the ball on the low to mid block and go to work. When the Gators were able to get Castleton on the left block with single coverage, Colin was superb averaging around 1.2 points per possession.
So most coaches would think you have to double team him, right? But only if you’re comfortable giving up 1.37 points per possession. Basically, your best bet was to single cover Castleton and hope your defense at least forces a tough shot. Double teams had mild success if you can force a turnover, but you can’t let him pass out... the PPP jumps to 1.474 if you double and he gets the ball out. Sheesh."
=====

On opposite ends of the physical spectrum players.

C Jason Jitoboah 6-11 290 (5 PF's in 8 Min)

8 Min - FG 1-3, 2 Pt's -- 1 RB, 1 Blk, 5 PF's
~ Still too fat to run the floor well.

PF/C Tuon Gatkek 6-9 172 (a wirey 7-4 Wingspan)
9 Min - FG 1-2, 2 Pt's -- 2 Rb, 3 PF's

~ To lightweight to not get pushed around some when inside.

If Jit could just give Gat about 40 pounds,,,,, zambowee....
Maybe by next season when they will both be needed.

~ JMOHO, but either/both are an improvement over Payne's 2020 play.

Points of some interest to me:

The Gators are more accurate from the left side at every level, from in close out to the arc. Left corner 3's at 42%
As expected, they are most accurate in the paint at 59%.

~ Injuries to bigs have been Mike's plague every year since his 2nd at UF.
The amazing thing about that is that he's still made the Dance every year.
Here's to hoping that this year is injury free, for a much needed change.
(excuses vs valid reasons)
So when FSU cleans our clocks for us yet again, and rational people complain, will you come back with more of your mindless idiocy?

What am I saying. Of course you will. It's all you've got.

Might as well have said, "you are correct, as always, Lizardgrad89". Reads the same way. And you would have finally been correct about something.

Here's a clue for you: You want to be right 9.5 times out 10? Agree with me. You want to be wrong at least 9.5 times out of 10? Disagree with me.

“First of all, with Tuon Gatkek - he plays as hard as anyone on our team,” White said following the win on Tuesday after Gatkek threw down a nasty dunk to get his two points and three rebounds in eight minutes. “He has to fill out and he has to gain weight. He has a lot to learn at this level. He has three or four years to play, so he has time. I like his talent and I love his motor. He’s extremely tough for a big, thin guy. He did some good things, and then he did some freshman-type things as well."

You can both expect the sleeping emoji as his response, if you get any at all.

I have to admit the old fool has some guts. Don't know if I could be so embarrassingly wrong so often and yet still come back for more.

Noles up 30-28 at halftime. Both teams playing excellent defense and the Gators have held their own so far. Neither team shooting free throws well, under 50%, but they are shooting it better than us, mainly because we've missed several easy shots at the rim. We're only 3-12 shooting 3's, FSU is 4-7. We have a 21-19 rebounding edge. FSU has 6 assists to 5 turnovers, UF 4 assists to 5 turnovers. Our guards are dribbling around too much, especially Fleming, plus Appleby and McKissic sat the last part of the half with 2 fouls. Good game so far.

Gators on an 18-5 run leading 60-47.
I lost count but Casselton is throwing a block party.

Great win for the program. 71-55 and beat FSU at their own game - defense, ball movement and hustle. Made 75% of our free throws and shot it much better the 2nd half. Outrebounded the Noles 44-33, including 17 offensive rebounds. FSU only had 10 assists to 16 turnovers, while the Gators had 11 assists to 14 turnovers. But we had 10 blocked shots, 6 from Castleton, who also had 15 points and 16 rebounds. Duruji had 15 points and 7 rebounds, Jones & McKissic had 12 points each, Fleming 9. Excellent team play and great start to the season.
Next game is Thursday 6 pm at home vs. Milwaukee on SEC+.

PG Tyree Appleby - 30 Min.
5 Pts, 3 Rbs, 3 PFs, 5 Asts, 1 TO. He had to leave the game midway through the 2nd half when the Gators were taking control of the game and the O'Dome was coming alive like it hadn't in 2 years — to run to the locker room and vomit due to flu symptoms that hit him during the game. But then he returned to help finish off the noles.

Uhhh, Tuon didn't play today. As we've been telling you, kid will only play in mop up minutes. If he is getting significant playing time it's a bad thing. That aside, awesome win. Loved seeing Mike White celebrating getting the monkey off his back.

What are you talking about? Did Tuon play today?
What are you yapping about, did I ever claim that he would start or play in every game?
And this is the season primer thread, not the game thread that someone else started.

Pay attention now. I said that he could give Mike some game 'quality time minutes' if he chose to use him. Others said that he'd get 'nothing but mop up minutes,' or otherwise that would mean that the team sucked. That has already been proven incorrect by his use in the Elon game.
=====

A short refresher course for any and all of the clueless Mike White haters.

C Egbunu goes down, Mike still makes the NCAA and gets a win.
Egbunu forgoes his Sr season for the NBA but goes undrafted. AMF

C Gak goes down, Mike still makes the NCAA and gets a win.
Jr season, C Gak rehabs but never makes it back to the floor for the Gators. eventually xfer out. AMF

Several injuries and with the youngest team to make the NCAA's.
Mike still makes it to the Tourney and gets a win.

Co-V kills the post season, but the Gators were a projected Tourney team when it ended.

Co-V and the Pre-season SEC PoY goes down early in the 4th game of the season, with UF in the lead (+8) @ Talleycrappy, but when the game finally resumed, they lost the game.
Mike and players have described as one of the most challenging backdrops to a season they could possibly envision. Mike still makes it to the NCAA and gets a win.

Three go pro, 4 xfer out, Gators begin the 2021-22 season Not Ranked in the Top 25.
While FSU has four 7-footers, and four starters in their fourth or fifth seasons.

UF just beat #20 FSU by 16 Pts in the 2nd game of the season, before the newbees have even fully gelled. (The iG's Addition by Subtraction is already confirmed)

Fire that incompetent Mike White, before he kills Florida's history as a long standing B-Ball Powerhouse.... 🙄

PS
While nobody has said so, but wasn't KJ Co-V vaccinated in the off season before his collapse???

The game plan for today,,, was for 6 players to get the vast majority of the playing time.

So, since PF CJ Fleder only got 2 minutes of mop up time, I guess that means that he can't play any better than Tuon, going by your VI logic, right?

Nobody said anything about CJ? Stick to the subject. Did Tuon play today? If the answer is no, which it is, then you have your answer. We tried to tell you.

So far he's played 5 total minutes in 2 games...

Tuon played in the Elon game in mop up duty. Meaning the outcome of the game had already been decided. And since when did mop up duty only mean when the team isn’t any good?? That isn’t the definition of mop up duty. Geez man!

Makes my head hurt. Tuon will only get mop up duty, well CJ only played 2 minutes today so you are wrong about Tuon. What?

Let me just say that I'm not going to continue with the Village Idiot's in this Mike White haters convention. You twits can continue with your circle jerk without me wasting any more time on you, on a subject that I'm satisfied that I've already been proven correct on. Yawl can have at it, as the board owners appreciate the posts, even when they are coming from the VI's....

It’s classic that Insta references a game in which Tuon doesn’t even play as to prove Tuon is going to play significant minutes

......InstaGator, just add senility and bottom shelf bourbon

The Ohio State/Seton Hall winner should be a good test for this team also. I doubt California will be too much of a problem to beat unless they are hitting a lot of 3s or something like that.

Very pleased to finally get a W against FSU. Maybe we can sweep them this year in the basketball/football tandem. I like our chances this year better than any of the previous seven. 🤣

He’s been warned. I’m surprised I’ve let this go on for as long as I have. I guess just because I’ve become “numb” from it when it comes to Insta.

You were proven correct that Tuon will play meaningful minutes because he did not play at all against FSU?

So were you also proven correct that Grantham is the answer at DC by his firing?

Gators are blowing out Milwaukee 68-31 with 6:49 left. Visitors have a Draft lottery freshman and are a pretty good team. Through the first 3 games I am impressed by:
1. Tenacious defense without a lot of fouling
2. Ball movement and unselfishness on offense
3. Overall team maturity and leadership from 3-4 guys
It seems like they have the makings of a very good team.
