2021-22 Basketball Primer

“We did a horrible job on the glass as a team and at certain times they just bullied us,” Castleton said.

Added senior forward Anthony Duruji: “I think we need to dial in and continue to respond.” According to Duruji, the team is abundantly aware that it will have to match Castelton’s intensity. “We have to be desperate,” he said. “We have to be urgent now. We’ve got another one coming up on Saturday, we’re off tomorrow. We’ve got to respond. Like I said, continue to get better and take advantage of these opportunities coming down.”

Edit PS -- FIRE MIKE WHITE and
the moe-ron AD that gave him a raise and extended his contract,,,
and the long time clueless twits in the UAA that hired them both....
I'd keep them all in trade for getting rid of you...

UF Women's Basketball (20-8, 10-5) played their worst game since early in the year and dropped a road game to lowly Vanderbilt 63-59. The Gators fell behind early 16-9 with 10 turnovers in the 1st quarter and had 28 turnovers for the game, with Vandy scoring 28 points off those turnovers. Florida only got 7 free throws, as they just couldn't penetrate Vandy's defense, nor get any drives going to the basket. The Gators came in ranked #15, their highest ranking since 2008-09 and closed out the regular season with a home game against Missouri, as game which they need to win.

For most of us, it would only add to our frustration if Georgia fired their coach while Stricklin retains Mike White.

Gator men's BB beat Georgia again, the worst team in the SEC, this time 84-72 in Athens. P. Fleming had a great game with 27 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Appleby had 21, Jones 13 and Castleton had 10 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists. The Gators only had 6 turnovers in the game, with 20 assists. Now 18-11, 8-8. Vandy up next.

Missed the game. Sounds like we scored some points. Need the vandy game big time.

Hooray, we are not the worst team in the SEC. Heck we might even be a top ten team. Top 10 in the SEC.

Gator women struggling these last few games. Need to get their mojo back heading into the tourney.
Missouri is better than Vanderbilt, but the Gators have been outplayed again. This was Senior day, our last home game and a chance to sew up a Top 4 seed in the SEC tournament. We had no answer for their star player, a 6'1" forward who had 26 points and 10 rebounds. Kiara Smith had a horrible game for us until she turned it on the last few minutes of the game and helped make the came close at the end, although the final score was 78-73. Rickards & Broughton, also, had bad games, so when your top players don't perform up to their standards the team will struggle. They end the regular season 20-9, 10-6 in the SEC, still a very solid and surprising season and we will finish in a tie for 4th in the SEC with Ole Miss unless they can upset South Carolina today - then we finish 5th.

Legitimately, what are the odds y’all see White being retained by UF if a NIT bid is all y’all get?
I don't think he's gets fired regardless of what happens this season. If we miss the tourney his seat will be very warm next season. Based on who we are losing he will need to strike some gold in the portal.

I would agree that he probably is safe as well. But I’d say fan sentiment is not good

Or a 4th ship depending on KJ's status???

Position (ships) break down:

1 CG
3 SG (SF?)
1 SF (?? KJ)
4 PF (C?)
1 C

Needs in iG's opinion: 1-2 PG's, 1 SF, and 1 C.

White isn’t getting fired this year. Next year he should be on the hot seat. I would of fired him a few years ago but oh well.

We desperately need a true PG. We will most likely have 1-2 transfer out. Depending on what we can do in the portal, next year's team could be about the same as this.

I have been following all Gators sports for most of my long life and I have to say that my interest in Gator Men's Basketball is about as low as it's ever been. I still watch most of the games, but just don't have the enthusiasm I used to have. Have ya'll noticed that our women's gymnastics team gets sellout crowds for every home meet and there are always empty seats for the basketball games? There seems to be a growing apathy for the men's basketball and, to me, it's because the program is listless and stuck in a rut in the middle of the SEC pack with no real signs of getting better.

No question it's lost it's luster. And you're right, middle of the pack will do that to you.

Lordy Vandy had some stretches where they couldn't miss. White made some good adjustments in the last 2 min defensively that really helped. Excellent road win against a team that is better than their record.

It's a game they should have won and had to win and they did it. Defense was pretty bad most of the game, IMO, although Vandy made some incredible shots throughout. But the last 3 minutes, the Gators tightened it up, made all the plays and pulled it out. Nice win, but unless they beat Kentucky Saturday I don' think they make the NCAA tournament without winning at least 2 games in the SEC tourney.

Utilizing Castleton at the end was crucial. He gets a double team almost every time they go to him in the post and a perimeter player is wide open. It worked to perfection. If he is not double teamed then I like his chances of scoring. Of course you have to hit the open J for this to work. They have been shooting better of late.

We've lost some games down the stretch this year due to Appleby's reckless play. He flies down the court out of control and then turns the ball over. He did it again last night. They were lucky to overcome it.

If we had just taken care of AM, Ole Miss, Texas Southern and Maryland we wouldn't be worried about the bubble right now.

As always, entitled Gator fans can suffer a win better than any other fan base in the world.

I enjoyed watching another game, and I'll enjoy the game on Saturday, win or lose.

UF Women's BB came from way behind to edge Vanderbilt in their first game of the SEC tournament 53-52. Nina Rickards made 2 free throws with 8 seconds left to give the Gators their margin of victory and Jordyn Merritt blocked a layup with 1 second left tp preserve the win. Florida outscored Vandy 20-8 in the 4th quarter after trailing virtually the entire game. The Gators shot 38% from the field, but only 21% from the arc, while committing 21 turnovers, but their defense held Vandy to 30% shooting. Next up for 21-9 Florida is Ole Miss Friday afternoon, a team that beat them in Gainesville by 18 points on January 6.

UF 82 - 78 VU in a quality Quad 1 Road game.

Fleming - 33 Min, 5-10 FG, 2-4 3's, 4-4 FT, 4 Rb, 6 Ast, 2 TO, 2 Blk, 3 Stl, 16 Pts
(Player of the game imo)

Appleby - 33 Min, 4-9 FG, 3-5 3's, 1-1 FT, 3 Rb, 2 Ast, 3 TO, 12 Pts

Lane - 26 Min, 3-3 FG, 1 Rb, 0 TO 1 Blk, 1 Stl, 6 Pts

Reeves - 13 Min, 1-3 FG, 1-3 3's, 3 Rb, 2 TO, 3 Pts

As a team, they only had 8 TO's to 13 Asts. with 6 Stls, and 3 Blks

In the Final 3:52, they out scored VU 14-2, including 9 Pts in the final 32 sec.
Just a BTW - White is the only UF coach to beat VU 4 consecutive times on their court.

Mike White never faced Vandy teams that had Will Perdue and a team led by Kevin Stallings, who had multiple postseason appearances while at Vandy. Vandy became absolute garbage since Stallings left.

Always good to see what the White haters find most interesting in a stats post, a small piece of BTW triva.... 🙄

I loved her name in the movie, Dude Where's My Car, Christie Boner.

She doesn't look quite old enough to be yo-mamma, so is she your wife, your daughter, or your sister??? 😂

Letting Stalllings go was maybe the worst decision in Vandy basketball history.
