I am not usually one for "conspiracy theories" but I am seeing this theme come up again and again. It is Jill Biden who is truly driving this on behalf of Joe. Yes, I am sure he likes the trappings of the office, but he is so diminished, I think he just wants a comfortable place.

She though seems deeply and thoroughly enamored with her newly found power and central place in the party. A late stage, Hillary, if you will.

So lets compare Reagan to this situation. Nancy never let Ronnie be seen in public again after the diagnosis.
