Ky Game Thread

It’s as simple as this. If AR isn’t going to keep the ball on some of those zone reads then he will be completely ineffective as a college QB. He’s not a guy that is going to sit in the pocket and consistently hit passes. It just isn’t who he is and it isn’t his strength. At some point you have to stop trying to make these QBs something they aren’t. Mullen tried the same thing with Emory Jones and make him sit in the pocket and consistently make throws. These guys can’t do that.

I picked Utah & Florida, so am 0-2 and that's why I NEVER bet on the Gators, or any other sports. Everybody knew going in to the season this was a rebuilding project. People got too high after last week and will overreact and be too low after tonight. I say just chill and see how the season plays out. We got outcoached and outplayed tonight. Both defenses were good, but that freak interception just before halftime kept them in the game and then the gimme TD in the 3rd quarter pretty much gave them the game. KY got a little bit of a running game going the 2nd half, as our thin defense wore down some. But our offense went from bad to pathetic in the 2nd half. No space for the running backs, no separation from the receivers and poor throws from the QB, combined with questionable play calling, IMO. I give KY a lot of credit, though. They were picked 2nd in the East, us 4th, and they proved tonight to be the better team. Just have to pick up the pieces, beat USF next week and then go to Knoxville and get the season back on track with a win.

I did not understand why Napier decided to go for it on 4th down on the FLA 40 with 5 minutes to go in the game.

Tbh, neither did I. I know the D was getting tired....but I still had more trust in them over putting the game on the line with 1 play with an ineffective offense with that much time left.

Yep he literally just froze and couldn't even throw a 5 yard pass halfway decent.
You could see it in his eyes for over half the game through the tv.....he was spooked and not confident.....guess this massive army of a football support staff doesn't have someone watching the game via a TV set in order to communicate to the coaches when the QB isn't in the zone.

Jones at least kept running it. This was crazy tonight. I really believe we will know during the Tenn game whether this will work or not.

Even worse, without prompting from somebody watching tv, the coaches not taking him aside and being able to tell he's done. Like a car that hit "empty" on the fuel guage 20 miles ago.....don't push it any further.

Kitna isn't experienced, but sometimes desperate situations calls for desperate actions....and experianced or not, you should have confidence in your backup making 5 yard passes and handing it off.

Like I said in post #16 that his body language the whole game was awful. He had NO emotion or intensity the whole night. Looked like a deer in headlights. He was probably patted on the back all week about his play against Utah. Wonder what he will hear this week about his play against the Cats.

I hope AR has it mentally because one more outing like that and he would get the Jones treatment. It's one thing your struggling but hitting some passes downfield but what happened tonight won't last long.

Kentucky is a good team. Coming off a 10 win season and they got the benefit of watching Utah film and put together a great game plan. Napier needs to hire an offensive coordinator.

I could be wrong but I think both MS schools will beat KY this season. I don't think they are what they were last year.

KY is good, but they aren't Bama good. They can line up and play with anyone but they can also lose to anyone. Stoops has done a great job over there. He's in line for a big boy job if he wants it.

AR-15 looked like a lost cause tonight. His problem is that he eyeballs his receivers too much. Give Kentucky credit for recognizing that and making the big INTs, including the pick-six. The kid has to learn to progress through his reads before making a throw. And if it isn't there, haul ass out of the pocket. He's got the legs to do it. That first INT was inexcusable because he should've seen that KY defender right there sitting in the passing lane. And the last one doomed him because of miscommunication between himself and the receivers. This is like Emory Jones all over again boys. And what's worse is that KY isn't really all that good. Like last year, we beat ourselves with self-inflicted wounds (i.e. INTs, bad play calling, missed opportunities). This team shot itself in the foot. And going forward Napier needs a sound OC that can call plays. We're in for a long season.

I remember posting to other UF fans on another Gator board over 20 years ago that all UK needs is a coach who will bring the football program to the next few levels. Of course all I got in replies were, it will never happen, football will always be 2nd fiddle to hoops.

I even stated over 20 years while the UK fans long awaited for hoops season to begin, they still filled their football stadium to maximum capacity no matter how awful they were. Hurricane fans sure as hell can't say that.

To succeed in the SEC you have to have a pocket passing QB first and then one that can run second. We have it backwards. Look at the 2 top teams in the SEC and the QB situations. Pass first then run

Yep. Cats most likely win 9 games this year. Nice run for them over the last 6 or so seasons.

AR-15 needs to settle down and learn to progress through his reads. He kept forcing the ball into tight coverage plus the picks. When you eyeball receivers you are asking for it. Napier has his work cut out for him. He has to teach the kid to resist his impulses and trust the development of passing plays.

I want to say that after next year, a big-time program will throw serious moolah at Stoops and he bolts.

If AR plays like this vs Tennessee and Miller is healthy then you might see AR on the bench. Miller is a pocket passer and then a runner.

You could be right. I'd hate to see it happen to him, but that looks to be the reality if this persists.
Remember Napier went after Jack Miller for a reason. I'm sure he saw the way AR played last year. Running QB in the SEC will not work in 2022. You have to be able to pass the ball.

I like that Napier is taking ownership. Not pointing fingers only blaming himself.
Me too. I saw his press conference. That's the mark of a good coach. These first-year processes are a pain in the ass until it gets better. And remember, he's had a short time to recruit and build. He's got a great set-up so far. We just have to give it time.

Your offense was a joke bc they faced one of the best d's in the country, not just the conference. Noone does homework on ky. We got this defense thing down pretty good.
Excuse me, but KY's offense wasn't so hot tonight either.
