I think you overestimate the average American's trust in the media. The people who hang on whatever CNN or Fox has to say are already partisans.
McCain only became tired when he had cancer. He and my dad were good friends and kept in contact during that time. He didn't seem tired in the 2000's.

My wife watches this gal on Instagram good looking attorney chick who is pretty non-biased, I think her name might be Jordan something, but I've seen her a few times and I was impressed. I will look into it.

It disappoints me that so many of my fellow 'conservatives' can't fathom the middle ground. If someone isn't 100% in your corner, they must be at the extreme other end.
Guns are designed to kill and they're frequently used to do just that.
That puts them in a different category than other 'tools' (although I suppose you could make a case for abortion).

Guns do one thing. They shoot. If you shoot someone, you're using the gun as it was designed. It's a weapon.....period.
You can say the same about bows and arrows but you don't see a lot of bow and arrow violence so they're not in the discussion very often.
