Gators to Hire Ron Roberts as LB Coach, Co-Defensive Coordinator ?

College football transfer portal 2023 rankings: Top 25 players from final ratings

Florida State leads the way with four commits
among that group, while LSU, Michigan and Ohio State each have two.

Williams has the Florida Gators in his top three schools

By

June 7, 2023

Last weekend, the Florida Gators hosted several prospects from the state of Texas on official visits including one prospect who was on campus for the first time.
Offensive lineman Ory Williams (6-6, 320, San Marcos, TX. High) was on campus and learned a lot about the school in his first trip to Gainesville.
“This visit was really good,” Williams said of his visit to Florida. “I learned a lot about the school, I learned a lot about Coach [Billy] Napier, Coach [Rob] Sale, and Coach [Darnell] Stapleton. I really like it, they’re definitely one of my top schools and I’m coming back on July 29th.”

Fever,

CBN Is also the first Head Coach who has EVER had to deal with creating & managing NIL$$$ & the incredible recruiting infrastructure outlays of today - $2.5 MM by UGA & only slightly less by Bama, Tenn, LSU, & TAMU.

UGA spending more money on recruiting infrastructure than UF spent on Spurrier & his entire on the field coaching staff -
HINT - there was NO off the field coaching staff then.

Your comments on past Gator Head Coaches are like a fan trying to compare athletes of different eras - Paul Horning vs Emmitt Smith as NFL RBs.

Another FWI - we can't afford to fire CBN - unless you want to donate enough money for his buyout !
LOL
So bitching about his record is a waste of breath !

If you are NOT part of the solution -
YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM !!!

CBN way better than Mike Norvell IMO. Norvell struggled early & now seems to be coming through.

In case you haven't noticed - We have had 4 football Head Coaches in the last 10 years !

This turnover hasn't helped us - either on the field or on the recruiting trail.

Seems like we could & should give CBN the same chance / amount of time, Norvell got before we throw out accusations & claim the sky is falling.

Insta calls this the Talking Season -
I think we should rename it the WHINING SEASON !
And I Know we should not be a part of ANY discussion comment by any one as far as terminating BN, Shows a total lack of Florida Football politics. We give our coaches the benefit of the doubt when it comes to termination....jim

I don't think you can terminate him tbh. Isn't his buyout 30 mill? Plus the assistants? He's recruiting well, let him him get 3 or 4 yrs of good recruits on campus and then decide. The roster will be stacked with talent and the buyout will be cheaper

DJ Lagway Recruiting 'Class That Will Change' the Florida Gators

DJ Lagway, a player-recruiter for the Gators during the first official visit weekend, is confident Florida is doing the right things in Jeremiah Smith's recruitment.

While 16 other official visitors appeared on campus alongside him, Lagway set his sights primarily on a fellow five-star throughout the weekend, wide receiver Jeremiah Smith.

The Ohio State commit from Opa Locka (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna Prep is the nation’s top-rated wideout and No. 2 overall player in the country for the cycle. His pledge to the Buckeyes has rarely wavered — confirming hit loyalty to renowned wide receivers coach Brian Hartline and OSU on multiple occasions — despite the pursuit of other top programs.

SEC Football 2023 Predictions

Georgia leads the way in the SEC predictions for 2023.

The Bulldogs will face resistance from Alabama and LSU in the SEC West, with Tennessee up next from the East Division.

The SEC boasts a strong middle class in '23, headlined by an improved Texas A&M squad, along with Kentucky, South Carolina, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Auburn and Mississippi State.

Florida and Missouri should be fighting for a winning season and bowl trip, while Vanderbilt could take another step forward in its third year under coach Clark Lea.

https://athlonsports.com/college-football/sec-football-2023-predictions

JFJ
The Gators have talent - they are 11th in the country with a blue-chip rate of 64%. This is ahead of teams like Michigan, USC, and FSU.

Analytics & Metrics of comparison, in & of themselves, don't win games - players & game time coaching does.

As always, I see the glass as 1/4 full - Defense will be better, OL will be better, RBs are good to excellent; WRs depend heavily upon the skills of the QB.

Mertz at QB1 the puzzler - if he is a competent Game Manager, limits turnovers, & can be effective in the short to medium passing game, our Offense will be decent.

We will not beat UGA; probably won't beat Utah, Tenn, or LSU.
But the rest are winnable games - if we play intelligently.

I don't expect the Gators to compete for any titles, but I think they will be better than many expect.

Just saying people are nuts trying to put it out there that a 7-5 season would be fine in year 3 after consecutive 6-6/7-5 seasons the first 2. That would be saying UF is willing to have KY like results after giving the coach an army and having state of the art facilities etc. Results like that havent been allowed in over 50 years.

When you say better than expected does that mean 7-5 or 8-4 as their is a big difference with fans it seems on that. Many think 7-5 is a possibilty but very few think 8-4 is. I would say the same with the talking heads on TV not linked to the Gators.

Fever,

I think 7-5 is possible. That's not much better in terms of W-L, but schedule IS tougher.

A lot, obviously, depends on Mertz for any offensive success. Even with our RBs, we need to have some sort of short to medium passing game.

CBN not interested in a Fun 'N Gun type offense & none of our QBs could run it - don't need long throws downfield.

In addition to WRs, we need TEs or RBs who can both catch & block.

Blue-Chip Ratio 2023: The 16 teams who can actually win a national title

Gators at #11 -

Very Interesting Article !
IMO, Gators have a problem at QB - our Blue Chip ratio declined after including transfers - though I doubt that all of that decline came from just these two QBs.

Real problem is that neither of out top 2 QBs (Mertz & Miller) will ever be confused with Tebow or Wuerffel.

Neither one of them has shown the ability to put the team on their backs, & win the games that count !

I read this (2023 BCR #11) & then I look at our schedule - tough to reconcile them - with regard to our W-L expectations.

Coaching & player development still critical, but starting with a talented team ALWAYS makes it easier.

Recruits understand the value of coaching - commonly heard phrase -
I looked at all the players he's (coach) put into the league (NFL).

How much talent does it take to win the national championship in college football? And which of the teams in 2023 are most set to deliver on that promise? Unveiling the 2023 Blue-Chip Ratio.

The Blue-Chip Ratio threshold does not guarantee a national championship, but a team not meeting it is almost certainly guaranteed not to win it all.

The requirement to stack talent on top of talent makes sense when considering the violence of the sport of football. Even those teams who stay relatively healthy need depth to survive the season. Teams who sign elite class after elite class have greater competition in practice, and greater quality of depth.

Recruiting rankings are not perfect. But they are damn good, especially in the aggregate.
Four- and five-star recruits are about 10 times more likely to be drafted in the first round than their two- and three-star counterparts.
And five-stars are about 33 times more likely to be All-Americans as two-stars are

11798809.png

FINALLY, LET’S LOOK AT THE BCR WITH THE TRANSFERS

Here’s how it changes with transfers in.

My first takeaway is that the very best teams are not significantly improving their BCR with transfers, at least through two years of complete transfer ratings. Michigan went up by one percent, while a few teams go down by more than five percent if transfers are added in, and Auburn actually drops out if transfers are included.

Does that feel right? I think so. It is comforting to see that, at the very least, it is not inflating their BCR numbers. And it is consistent with the idea that many transfers are taken for depth or to fill holes, and that there are not many elite players available in the portal at premium positions, at least so far.

Florida State will be the most interesting case to look at this year. Including transfers pushes FSU’s BCR from 38% to 41%. Yet the Seminoles have top-10 odds in Vegas to win the title. Michigan State receiver Keon Coleman, UTEP offensive lineman Jeremiah Byers, Western Michigan defensive tackle Braden Fiske, South Carolina defensive end Gilber Edmond, and Virginia cornerback Fentrell Cypress II are all additions from this year and almost all will be expected to start.

FSU projects as a very good team. It doesn’t have a lot of identifiable weaknesses and QB Jordan Travis is even getting some Heisman Trophy love.

FSU and LSU both have bolstered their rosters with good portal talent and many of those portal transfers will be good starters this season. I think GA and just a very few other good teams wont have many big portal transfers but even GA went and got that dominant WR from Missouri I think it was. Also with portal guys from power 5 teams you generally know what you are getting if they were starters unlike the high school recruits. I think anyone thinking a team can compete for championships and/or the 12 team playoff not using the portal much except for just a very few will be mistaken. You definitely have to use both things to improve your team.

Gators Crack Top 3 for Fast Rising OT Ory Williams Following Official Visit

The Florida Gators impressed fast-rising offensive tackle target Ory Williams during his official visit, cracking his top three at this stage of his process.

Amazing how many Texas Targets/Recruits we are working on.

Might have something to do with QB D J Lagway !

Despite being in the unfamiliar environment, Williams received a taste of home as he associated himself with fellow Texas natives DJ Lagway and Xavier Filsaime throughout the weekend.
Lagway — who's taking a hands-on approach as a player-recruiter in the class — holds a pre-existing relationship with Williams and "stays in touch" about the possibility of suiting up in the same uniform at the next level, the latter shared. The weekend moved Florida into a legitimate position to make Lagway's wish to acquire the left tackle prospect in the 2024 class a reality.

Williams will move forward with official visits to Texas A&M, LSU and Georgia in the next three weekends.

WR Jerrae Hawkins Names Gators to Top 3 Ahead of Official Visit

Gators wide receiver target Jerrae Hawkins drops his top three ahead of his official visit to Florida.

On Thursday, Gators wide receiver prospect Jerrae Hawkins Jr. narrowed his list of contenders from six to three via Instagram, placing Florida in good standing to acquire his services alongside Miami and Penn State.

Hawkins has good track speed -

Hundreds of offers, many recruits lists,,, but let me see the commits, and then those that remain until ESD and/or NSD and actually sign their LOI, and then remain past Spring practice without entering the xfer portal....

Until then, we are basically barking at the Moon! 😎

Insta,

Understand your frustrations & am forced to agree.

Hats on a table at this stage of the game - mean nothing.

Making a recruit's top 3 - means nothing.

A signed LOI - means nothing.
.

BUT
I remain partially optimistic - my glass is still 1/4 full.

Team will be better
BUT
7-5 about the best W-L record I see for this year.

The HOPE of NIL$$$ now entrenched in the football & basketball recruiting culture.

UF doesn't have boosters willing to throw money around the way that teams with a historical culture & reliance on McDonalds' Bags are willing to do.

Many 4*s & 5*s are looking for the big payday & because of that they are stretching out the recruiting process.

If I was in this position - a highly recruited HS athlete -
I would do the same DAMN thing !

When they don't get offered the Pot O' Gold at the end of the rainbow that THEY feel THEY deserve, I believe that most of them will become more reasonable.
Then, the first big offer, the first great OV, & all the other steps CBN & staff are going through will make their presence felt.

The other option, which some of these players
WILL TAKE
IS
to become a multi-time/permanent resident of the transfer portal.

We are already seeing young recruits on their 3rd team.

"... Following a spring stint (4 Months ?) with Deion Sanders' Colorado Buffaloes, former Florida Gators OL Yousef Mugharbil has identified his second transfer destination - his third school !

Former Florida 4* OL Yousef Mugharbil is transferring to North Carolina State from Colorado.

Mugharbil will "start out" as a walk-on with his home-state Wolfpack."
He will end up as a discard.

Everyone knows that "Coach Prime" wouldn't lie to a young recruit - would he ?

How stupid does Mugharbil feel now ?

I guess the rainbow & his personal Pot O' Gold got lost somewhere.

Yep we learned our lesson on recruits not making it to the season opener with Mullen's 2nd class where he was signing recruits to pad the class ranking.

Gators’ full visitors list for June 9

2nd weekend of CBN's June Mega recruiting Month

Coaches & Staffers will be on the phones all day trying to get a few more recruits on campus.

With 13 recruits making the trip, Billy Napier and his staff will be looking to impress both the uncommitted prospects and those committed elsewhere.

The Gators could use a little spark on the trail as well. After gaining lots of momentum and the spring, things have stalled a bit for Napier and co. on the trail, and fans were frustrated that the hype around last weekend didn’t result in a commitment.

Hopefully, they can change that this weekend.

Here’s the full list of recruits visiting Gainesville this weekend.

4-star LB Myles Graham – Gator commit, no real threat to flip him as the cycle continues

4-star TE Walter Matthews – Florida leads, followed by USC, Ohio State, and Michigan. Low odds of a commitment this weekend but feel good

4-star S Zavier Mincey – Heavy Florida lean, UCF, USF, and FSU are all equally far behind. Low odds of commitment this weekend

4-star OT Michael Uini – Texas leads followed by Bama, Clemson, and Michigan. Gators need to make a great impression this weekend

4-star WR Chance Robinson – Miami commit who was a long-time Gator lean. Decent flip chance but have a lot of work to do

4-star WR Jerrae Hawkins – Penn State leads, Gators in second place. IMG product may give Gators a little hope but work to do

4-star EDGE Jaylen Harvey – Penn State is a massive favorite, Gators down around 4th place. Long shot add to the class

3-star TE Eric Karner – Iowa and Michigan State ahead of Gators, but still a solid shot. Will be hard to pull him from Big Ten country

3-star S Justin Denson – COMMIT WATCH. On3 has Gators in second place but Denson has made it sound like he loves UF

3-star OT Marcus Mascoll – LSU is the big favorite, Gators still pressing for a flip

3-star S Ashton Hampton – Gators lead with Clemson and Arkansas behind

3-star OT Mike Williams – South Carolina leads, Florida way down the list but trying to come back

3-star DL Michai Boireau – Gators lead with Michigan and South Carolina trailing

Austin Simmons is a Florida Gators, Ole Miss Rebels Battle

As Fever pointed out, Lane Kiffin, is a good QB recruiter & has much greater experience as a Head Coach - admittedly, some, like being fired from USCw in an airport parking lot, are not ones to brag about
BUT
Ole Miss started 7-0 before losing 5 of their last 6 to end last year 8-5; still much better than the Gators.

On this board, we have been discussing
WHEN
Austin Simmons
would show up in Gainesville.

As this article points out; it's may be more a question of
IF
he shows up.

",,,Ole Miss and Florida will compete for a very unique athlete in Austin Simmons.

Today's Locked On Ole Miss Podcast discusses the interesting situation with Austin Simmons from South Florida. This is a Florida Gators commit who is a 2025 recruit with the ability to enroll this summer in college and almost have an associates degree already.

Today (Wednesday), he is in Gainesville as Florida tries to stop the momentum that has seemingly gone towards Ole Miss recently. He played last season at Pahokee H.S. with Ole Miss signee DeeJay Holmes."

There are no guarantees in recruiting; a signed LOI isn't much & a "VERBAL COMMIT" is a waste of breath.

All the recruiting work Lagway is doing is probably what is causing Simmons to step back.

Lagway will be the acknowledged leader of the Gators no matter when (IF) Simmons shows up on Campus.

Yep we need to get a top 10 class. I doubt top 5 is likely due to the NIL situation of some teams but top 10 should be attainable. I guess Simmons might end up as part of the 2023 class though.

Nick Saban, Greg Sankey, & other College Football Leaders Take to Washington in Search of National NIL Legislation

Saban wants to turn the clock back to the days when Bama could hand out McDonalds Bags & sign any player he wanted.

Saban/Bama has more Bagmen than CBN has Staff !

TAMU with Jimbo Fisher & Texas, with Saban's PROTÉGÉ Steve Sarkisian, are making it hard for Saban to cheat successfully.

"...Saban, Stuart Bell and numerous other power players descended on Washington D.C. this week for the annual SEC On The Hill event with hopes to legislate uniformity throughout college football.

College athletics took center stage in Washington D.C. this week as Nick Saban, Greg Sankey and more participated in the annual SEC On The Hill event.

Additionally, the state of Arizona hosted the Future of College Athletics summit in D.C. where new NCAA president Charlie Baker petitioned congress for national uniformity in relation to name, image and likeness in college athletics."

CBN was up to speed on this movement & recently spoke about the need for "National Legislation" on NIL.

Part of every OV is the interview in the Head Coach's office where the recruit gets the hard sell pitch & is asked to commit on the spot.

A new wrinkle has been added to these OV interviews -
the recruit now puts the Head Coach on the spot & says "How much NIL$$$ are you offering ?" & then demands to negotiate.
LOL

Wonder how Saban felt they first time that happened ?

No wonder SEC, NCAA, & Head Coaches are worried - they have lost control of the NIL$$$ process !

Fever,

Agree - but first you have to get them (quality players) on the field as part of YOUR TEAM - not the opponent.

I doubt that has the pull it used to in the NIL era. If Lagway let Simmons affect his decision that wouldnt be a good sign. I do think if Simmons failed to come here in late June he might end up going somwhere else in the 24 class.

AGREE !

Kiffin obviously raised some issues that made Simmons think.
Ultimately, every recuit must do what's best for him !

Simmons has great parents & they raised him to be a stand up young man !

After getting the hard sell from Kiffin, he had the COURTESY to come back to Gainesville & talk with CBN !

Ultimately, every recuit must do what's best for him !

Simmons has great parents & they raised him to be a stand up young man !

After getting the hard sell from Kiffin, he had the COURTESY to come back to Gainesville & talk with CBN !

Kiffin isnt a great recruiter and is relying on the portal a lot but he seems to be able to land QBs even when they have plenty of them.

Yep we learned our lesson on recruits not making it to the season opener with Mullen's 2nd class where he was signing recruits to pad the class ranking.
My comment had nothing to do with BN, it was just a comment on the constant recruiting hype. 🤓

Feveredbrains, you are totally unable to move on,,, but at least you are consistent with your whiny excuse making idiocy.... 😂

Top-40 prospect Caleb Odom makes surprise official visit to Florida

Phone work paid off.

4* TE/WR Caleb Odom out of Carrollton (Georgia) in the 2024 cycle has crashed CBN's party.

The 6-foot-5-inch, 220-pound pass-catcher has been warming up to the Orange and Blue of late after omitting UF from his preferred schools list earlier in the year. T

he rising high school senior released an updated list about a month ago, which consisted of the Alabama Crimson Tide, Georgia Bulldogs, Ole Miss Rebels, Miami Hurricanes, Colorado Buffaloes, Penn State Nittany Lions and Florida.

All the recruiting work Lagway is doing is probably what is causing Simmons to step back.

Lagway will be the acknowledged leader of the Gators no matter when (IF) Simmons shows up on Campus.
Simmons said he isnt worried about competition so he will have a leg up if he shows up this month. Hopefully Lagway feels the same way. You earn the leader part on the field imo.

Unless they both get beat out for the starting QB job by Brown....
😂 🤣 😂

What's the take on Max anyway?
Was he lied to so that Billy could at least have one QB in that class,, or was he just bullshitted into flipping and signing? Sooo many questions are involved when recruiting....

(softball needed a new & improved pitching coach, and imoho, football still needs an OC/QB's coach) 🤓

Insta,
absolute agreement

CBN interned under Saban - the consummate CEO type Head coach.

Have been hoping that he would bring in OC/QB Coach but Armstrong being solely a DC makes that unlikely - not enough on the field coaching slots.

But, obviously there are ways to get around that - put another analyst/coach in the press box during games & let him function as OC - sending calls down to CBN on the field - we will suffer some delays & miscues, but hopefully livable ones.

Who Coaches which QBs in practice doesn't seem to matter.

I agree Jeff with CBN seeming to be a good CEO for the team. He seems a good guy to me,,, 'if that makes sense.' 😉

That said, the QB coach might just be the single biggest team need.

When I look at where they were and where they are now in development, I'm left with an empty feeling.
AR-15 - Miller - Brown - Mertz,,, and with Lagway and/or Simmons coming in, they need a FULLY competent QB coach to develop them. But then again, that's JMOHO, as always.....

I think Brown may need to sue Napier and the UF baseball coach for not putting him in a game yet. Discovery may show if he has the playbook down yet.
