The Senate was to represent the states and not the people directly. It was another check on mobocracy. How many burdensome federal laws that lean on states to fund or manage would have been shut down/halted if Senators were beholden to their states instead of buying the votes of the "people" with goodies.
Steps
1 take money from the people (16th)
2 give it back to the states with strings attached
3 if you dont take the money the "people" vote you out (17th)
4 rinse and repeat

The reason we had to have federal law enforcement was because of local corruption. I'm not keen on state government either.
I'm wholeheartedly in agreement with the 16th amendment being one if the worst ideas ever, and I'm sure the founding fathers would agree.
I kind of like nothing getting done...aka gridlock. If its super important then it will get done even if the 17th was repealed.
But having a slow Senate that is looking out for the purse and not spending it would go a long way.
A lot of "charity" aka the welfare state would have been killed early on if the Senate was independent of the "people."
"Progressives" knew what they were doing when they saddled us with the 16th, 17th and the Federal Reserve. It set the stage for the modern administrative and welfare states, insulated the politicians from the resulting problems, created a democrat leaning system/government and made it near impossible to undo any program once its started.
BTW this all happened in 1913 and its why I sometimes post " Repeal 1913"

I think the main problem with slavery in this country was the way we ended it.
When the Europeans did it they did it peacefully when they were ready and started with the colonies, working gradually to their home country.
We fought a bitter civil war that pitted family against family and friend against friend.
It's going to take more than a a couple hundred years to heal up from that.
This is the only country on the planet where you could be born a slave in 1844 and die worth half a million in 1925.
Or start life as a crack dealer and end up a billionaire who's slept in the Lincoln bedroom at the White House.
