Dems view everyone as monolithic

You think it's reasonable to ban/limit Sunday voting that directly impacts black people "souls to the polls"?

HR1 is too big but something should be done on a national level.
It’s interesting Kalim, I did not know that it was a provision. The NYT on April 2 did a thorough review of the 98 page bill and cited 16 key provisions. This was not one of the 16.

i would have to think about this one. I have in my 50 years (I grew up in NYC, Tampa and now live outside of Chicago) and have never seen a voting place open on a Sunday or any of my African American friends call it a barrier.

out of curiosity, and I am honestly asking, why is Sunday such an important day? Is the local pastor imploring his/her church to vote?

in general, I am in favor of clear and stable voting and ID rules. Part of why Ghost and many others believe, to their core, why the election was stolen was the ad-hoc changing of mail in ballot rules due to COVID. When you have a backdrop of border issues, ballot harvesting, and general MSM “never-trumpism”, it creates a context that, at least metaphorically, the election was stolen. We need to create clear and fair rules. On Sunday voting, ok, but I have voted for decades on M-F and have never had an issue. Nor have I heard of anyone else of friends across multiple racial groups. Just plan to vote, get educated, show up, have a valid ID and vote. It’s not complicated. The barrier for years was apathy. Say what anyone will, there is certainly very little apathy anymore.

hope this helps. Interested to understand more from your perspective.

Well it's a southern tradition. The south by nature is very religious in the black community. So it was/is a tradition to have a Sunday service then go to vote. Is it important or a big deal to me? No but to people who have been doing that tradition it is. I also think some of you are focused on the wrong stuff. If a high % of black and brown people vote on sundays on certain states, then why would they ban voting on sundays? Sometimes it's just common sense.

No the people who believe the election was stolen believe that because Trump said it was. He feed them excuses. He also said that he didn't win the popular vote in 2016 because of illegal immigrants. I'm over debating the inaccuracies about the election being stolen. It wasn't and the people who think it was, always will think it was. I know when to walk away from a debate.

Why would anyone not believe that the democrats' fervor and the pushing of HR1 is because it's passage will significantly help democrats win elections. Anyone not believe that?

Considering it says make DC a state. I'll say yes.

Well that land DC resides on technically belongs to Maryland which is already a state, a very blue state.

Why not just make DC part of Maryland?

Answer: to gain two extra senators and additional house reps.

This is nothing more than the Democrat party moving the goal posts to gain more power.

Now just think if they actually get the votes to abolish the filibuster and gain senators and reps, that makes it very very difficult for republicans to have any chance at gaining control of the senate and house. Now rig a presidential election when your pool of nominees is weak and they’ll be able to pass whatever law they please.

This is why the filibuster needs to stay in the senate and should be re-established in the house.

Everything I just laid out for you is what is being talked about behind closed doors.

That is a republican talking point about DC becoming part of Maryland. I don't care either way. I would say keep it as it but to your point, yes it is to gain 2 more senators. That's why they stopped the push for PR, because PR is conservative and could go either way.

BOTH sides are about keeping, maintaining and gaining power. I can't understand why people complain when one side is doing what their side is doing. Those 47 bills on voting in the states are all intended to help the Republicans gain/maintain/keep power. Politics is all a game unfortunately.

I don't like HR1 as written but there some good things in there. I want to see what Manchin and Lisa M comes up with but we shouldn't have one party making all the voting rules.

I am for keeping the filibuster but I would change it. It shouldn't be used to obstruct.

Trust me when I tell you, this is not a Republican talking point. My office is next to a naval officer who reports to one of the joint chiefs, this is being talked about.

I don’t disagree about both parties wanting to keep power. Moving the goal post is a different story and that is exactly what DC statehood is.

I don’t want to grow government power, they have too much as it is. Per the constitution, the states determine the place, time and manner. It needs to stay that way.

Puerto Rico has been avoiding statehood as they do not want their citizens to pay American taxes nor be at the will of the US. If we’re going to make PR a state, then let’s make American Samoa and Tonga a state then. It’s a stupid thing to do.

Filibuster is needed when morons on both sides are trying to pass stupid legislation. I know you are for bipartisanship and if 65-75% of the vote is needed then that would actually make these morons work and earn their salary. Let’s be honest, they’re all free loaders.

For someone who doesn’t like stereotypes, you sure as heck do it here. I can’t speak for everyone, but I think it was stolen because of all the nefarious stuff that went down on election night. Thx for lumping everyone together. Weird take for you.

Fair enough about DC. I know that it's a game for them with DC. I don't any of them should be a state but you hear about it every so often.

It wouldn't be growing power. The federal government already has the power under the 15th amendment. I fundamentally believe that no state can be trusted in elections. I think blue states do things to stay blue and vice versa. It's exactly why they had poll taxes and literacy test. States can't be trusted with elections based on history.

I would love if they could work together but they don't. We all just suffer because of this.

This thing of "let's make sure that the party in charge doesn't pass anything big" is annoying.

I don't recall saying I don't like stereotypes. I actually use them in my everyday life unfortunately.

Now to me, you won't admit it but you're definitely a believer because of Trump. You probably felt the election was stolen way before election night because Trump was saying it would be.

Your arrogance and ignorance is on full display. So, you like stereotypes? Like, all black people…yada yada. Next, you have no clue why another human being thinks what they think. It’s ignorant.

I’m not doubting that shady shit goes on in all states but once you pass something like HR1 to circumvent the constitution, what’s next? You’re only seeing this as voting legislation but you’re missing the big picture.

This country desperately needs to get back to the foundations of the constitution, not create laws that circumvent it. Anytime you allow the federal government more power to control the people, you are growing government.

Poll taxes and literacy tests are a thing of the past. I’m right with you stating it was wrong. We’ve come a long ways since Jim Crow and more work needs to be done. However, the federal government is not the way forward with progress as they mess everything up they touch. Discussions such as these and more on the local level need to happen in order to bridge gaps. Communities need to come together to resolve issues, not relying on shitty legislation.

Again, you’re missing the bigger picture with the filibuster. To me, bipartisan support isn’t one dem or one rep agreeing on a bill when their party may disagree. Bipartisanship is actually solving issues with both sides and not adding all the bull shit. For example, the new infrastructure bill is a ****ing joke. 9% goes to actual infrastructure, the rest is garbage. How is that helping the people? All that’s needed is one vote to get it passed in the house. We, the people, have to pay for it. We are literally giving away our power to pay for another failed policy that only benefits DC and corporations. If they are going to pass garbage then it needs to have 65-75%. It would literally weed out these pointless bills.

Fair enough, take away the obstruction power and make these clowns actually do their jobs

Wasn’t directed at you sir. Myself, let them obstruct. The less these fools do the better. Thats both sides. They are both guilty of robbing americans. But hey, put a name like “Patriot Act” or “for the people act” and it must be good, right?

Yes both parties look to circumvent the constitution. No doubt about that. I think that voting is something that we can't allow to take steps back. I personally think it's stupid to have polls close at 7pm in one state but 8 in another or one state allows mail in voting and another state doesn't. We need one set of rules. If we had one set, then people wouldn't be complaining about Pennsylvania not following rules or NC counting votes late. Why open ourselves up to that scrutiny?

Of course it's a thing of the past but it's an example of how states can be bad.

I'll wait till a bill is signed before I comment on it. I strongly doubt a deal will ever get reached. You have to understand that not all people in congress wants to be policy people. That is something we previously discussed. That's why it's tough to get 60 votes. I'll keep that rule but make the people using the filibuster, actually talk. Make it painful.

Keep in mind that what works in one state, may not work in another. I definitely don’t want Utah to model it’s voting laws after California. I wouldn’t expect you wanting Pennsylvania modeling it’s voting laws after North Dakota. The population and demographics are different in every state.

As we’ve discussed before, I’m all for making voting easier as long as they can prove citizenship. Mass mail in voting is a stupid idea. Absentee voting I’m ok with because the voter needs to provide evidence of citizenship, they have to request the ballot and a damn good reason why they need to mail in a ballot. And I’m all about the states issuing free identification cards with proof of citizenship.

I’d take away the power of using the filibuster to obstruct and keep the voting percentage at 60%. Taking the filibuster away completely just adds more power to the federal government.

That's why having one set of voting laws would be best. Like FL and OH allowed for counting the mail in ballots early but PA didn't. It's just so stupid and confusing.

I agree with all of those suggestions. We'll never have 100% participation unfortunately. I'm not a fan of full mail in voting. I think it should be for damn good reasons like you said and for retired/older people. I hate seeing people like 77 standing in line to vote. Let them rest.

That's literally my only issue with it. I hate the obstruct part. I also think that people shouldn't be allowed to filibuster an entire bill. Should just be parts/sections of the bill.

This is a pipe dream but I’d rather have the governors from all states sit down and hash out the voting laws, then go back to the state legislature to debate the proposed changes before taking a vote to pass into law. That way we do not hand over election laws to the federal government. Not everything will be the same for each state but it would be a hell of a lot better than allowing whatever party is in power to determine the laws and rewrite the constitution.

I agree with all of that. However, I’d be concerned about some of these seniors being taken advantage of.

I’d much rather have each section of whatever bill debated and then a vote taken to approve said section. That way these bills aren’t rushed, both parties agree and actually bipartisanship has taken place. If you can’t agree on a section, it gets taken out.

so how did I get to the NYT? I just did a google search and it was the first article. That’s all.

Now, unlike you, I don’t view him as infallible. He is a consequential president. Far better than Bush. He made significant mistakes along the way and at the end cost the Republicans the senate because he missed the key lesson that Bannon pointed out in 2017 about the 2008 election: it’s about turnout versus persuasion. He needed to get to Georgia to campaign for Purdue and Loeffler. He didn’t and in turn Biden made Georgia the most important lynchpin of his presidency. As Frank Luntz said, all he need to do was go to Augusta, Ga, play golf and then talk about how important it was to get out the vote, hold the senate so that - at a bare minimum, he can run hearings on the election.

That is not Trump. He does not work for others or a higher good that is not his family. In that regard he is Tywin Lannister. It’s about his name, not the realm.

Unless you are trolling and trying to present yourself as an 'independent' or one of those 'look I am a republican and even I can't stand Trump' RINOs.

And of course, you forget that you've said before that the NYT is one of your trusted sources for news.

The same NYT that has consistently been busted publishing outright lies.

Why would anyone get their information from a source that lies? You guys rail on posters here citing The Gateway Pundit, but I've never once seen TGP busted lying to its audience.

Can't say that for the NYT. But they tell their audience the lies they want to hear, so they keep listening.

in general, I am in favor of clear and stable voting and ID rules. Part of why Ghost and many others believe, to their core, why the election was stolen was the ad-hoc changing of mail in ballot rules due to COVID.
Good grief.

We believe the election was stolen because we have seen EVIDENCE that votes were not only changed, but that the machines that count said votes were SET UP to change votes.

I find it fascinating that so many of you clowns claim that the only reason anyone thinks the election was stolen was because laws were changed or because Trump said something. As if we can't think for ourselves and need to be told how to think. Just because you guys can ignore evidence right in front of you, doesn't mean we will.

Then you same people turn around and pour over sources like the NYT and WaPo for your news.

The irony is so thick you could cut it with a knife.

Let’s get to the heart of your question: “why in the hell are you on here, dude?”

The answer is simple: to listen, learn and appropriately, where appropriate, engage.

my politics follow my world view: I distrust concentrations of power.

I read the NYT (along with many other news sources) to get a perspective. (their pieces are also very well written and can appreciate the craftsmanship). I also read your posts to get a perspective. Both are valuable.

I then try to suss out bias, agenda and other elements to get a richer world view. Through it, I am far better informed and I learn every day. I try to use “competition” to produce a better outcome. I am not here to troll. That is unproductive and immature. If you have a legitimate difference of opinion then discuss it. That is the heart of what happened on 1776.

hope that helps.

The history of this country shows Liberals and Conservatives leading great movements.

No the people who believe the election was stolen believe that because Trump said it was.
Now you are being monolithic in your thinking. I am sure a number of people hang on ever word that Trump said and only beleive it because he said it, but I am also sure, a large number of people do not hang on every word Trump said and we think think for them self.

Not to mention, DC use to be larger, with land taken from both Maryland and Virginia. I beleive it was 1840's when they gave the land back to Virginia and Alexandria County was formed.

That's why, there needs to be Term Limits, but we know, most of the politician would never vote to end their gravy train. Being a politician was never suppose to be someone's career. It was suppose to be a civic duty you did for 1 or 2 terms, then you returned home back to your normal life. And I am still waiting for someone to explain to me how soooo many of them become super wealthy while in office?

Went to the DMV yesterday. It's all appointment only. Was in and out in less then 20 minutes. It was great.
Why not make voting into a 3 day event. Once you are registered to vote (proven your a citizen), you request your voting day, place and time for each election thru either a website or calling in to your local elections office. They could even setup some sort of transportation assistance if needed.

I'm ok with that but I don't think politicians will ever agree to that.

Hiden told us blacks are monolithic and can't think for themselves, but added that unlike blacks 'the hispanic community is incredibly diverse!'
Apparently, all minorities are unable to obtain a DL or ID without gov't assistance, to suggest that they need assistance is racist so they do not require ID at all.
