Football The issue at the top

Remember how excited we were when the University was finally committing to putting funds into the program needed to turn it around?

You simply cannot just throw a ton of money at something and expect results. The UF admin has given Billy more money than any coach in history and lets just take a look at the two most important hires he has made. OC- Do we even have one? Of course we do and it's Billy. Why is he still the OC? Well because he "enjoys it". DC- 2019 UGA Quality Control, 2020 Lousiana LB coach, 2021-2022 Southern Miss DC/LB coach. 2023 UF DC.

Why would we seriously have had high expectations for this season when you look deep into this staff? HC has proven to have no clue what he is doing on gameday. We still called a timeout after a dead ball against Miami. OC, He has failed at every stop doing this. He begged for the position at Bama for years and was put off. Fired at Clemson and only one year at ASU. There is ABSOLUTELY NOT REASON he should have ever been allowed to be the OC. None. The fact that he was and was given the contract he was is amazing and possibly a sign that we literally had no other options to be HC, which is terrifying with another new hire looming.

We have given this guy more money than anyone in history to hire a bunch of buddies and admin from LOUISIANA! How can an AD see this happening and not step in and say something? We are fans, fans in general have a way of pissing their pants and thinking its nice to feel warm. A true sense of how of to judge a hire is how people on the outside feel about it. They aren't blinded by fandom. No one was impressed. Most laughed and mocked the hires. We had a strength coach get one good look at this program and say peace out after maybe a month.

There two scenarios and both could be true. 1) Billy is flat out stealing money and hiring his buddies. 2) No one wants to work for him.

We seen much much lesser schools hiring highly successful coordinators while we play fiddle sticks with unproven guys. Why is this happening constantly? What is going on at this University to cause this from HC to OC to DC and beyond? Are we the smartest guy in the room? Or is it something much deeper? It can't be money.

All of these things were obvious serious issues that everyone should have realized at the time they were done but chose HOPE instead of logic. What do we do now? We all talk about Lane but outside of him having a Spurrier-like ego, why would he come? Literally every fan I talk to says the next hire has to be someone who has proven themselves. I have no idea who in the hell that could possibly be and why they would come. "We are UF" is no longer a sufficient answer and neither is we will pay him (everyone can now).

I've never felt more hopeless about this program and after last year, that says a lot. We are literally at a point where the only legit man who could excite this program and turn it around is likely to lead his team to the playoffs in Oxford. Can we get him to rent a Uhaul at 2am like he did in Tenn? I would drive it. Thats also about the only way SS could avoid not calling a realtor soon.

Some Economic truth

The old Trump economy isn’t coming back

Many Americans have fond memories of the Trump economy that ran from 2017 to 2021. Inflation, interest rates, and gasoline prices were low; the stock market did well; and pre-COVID job and economic growth were solid.
The old Trump economy is a factor in the 2024 election, given that voters trust Donald Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, more on the economy than they trust his Democratic rival, Vice President Kamala Harris. And as usual, the economy is a top voter concern.

But if Trump wins a second term, anybody expecting a quick return to the Goldilocks economy of his first term is likely to be very disappointed. In a preview of Trump 2.0, Goldman Sachs estimated that the economy would shrink by half a percentage point during Trump’s first year if he imposed all of his policies, including new tariffs on imports and a business tax cut that pushed annual deficits higher. Harris’s plan, by contrast, would modestly boost GDP growth, according to Goldman.

During his first term, Trump benefited from benign economic trends dating all the way back to the Great Recession of 2008 and the slow but steady recovery that followed. The post-COVID economy is a different animal with stronger inflationary pressures, more protectionism, costlier energy, and more global turmoil likely to produce shocks. Those forces will dominate the economy during the next four years no matter who is the US president.

Many voters blame or credit the president for whatever happens on their watch. But market forces drive the economy, and presidents normally have only a marginal effect. Looking at four key indicators — inflation, interest rates, gasoline prices, and GDP growth shows that the trends under Trump were largely the same as those under his predecessor, Barack Obama. The COVID disruptions that began in 2020 changed the trajectory for all four of those metrics, as the following chart shows.

Inflation

A surge in prices since 2021 has been Biden’s biggest economic vulnerability. But Trump didn’t do anything special to keep inflation low. Except for occasional spikes in energy prices, there was no meaningful inflation from 1990 to 2021. The Federal Reserve was more concerned about deflation, given that overall price levels briefly went negative under Obama in 2015, as the chart above shows.

One huge factor keeping inflation contained for most of the last 30 years was globalization and a surge in cheap imports from China, in particular. Trump’s trade wars during his first term, when he slapped tariffs on imports, began to close the door on cheap imports. Biden kept those tariffs in place, and both Democrats and Republicans now back a tougher line on China and a renewed emphasis on boosting domestic manufacturing.

That could be good for the US economy overall, but stuff made in the USA is almost always more expensive due to higher pay and more stringent safety and environmental rules. There’s less of a built-in hedge against inflation now than there was during the peak days of globalization, which might have been around 2010 or 2015. That's not likely to change, and those cost pressures will put a higher floor under prices for many things.

Interest rates

During the Great Recession in 2008, the Federal Reserve slashed short-term rates to 0, the first time it had ever gone that low. That was shock therapy meant to jolt the economy back to life amid a financial panic and near depression. The Fed raised rates a bit from 2015 through 2019, but the lack of inflation allowed it to go slow — then slash rates to 0 again when COVID arrived in 2020.
Consumers got used to super-low interest rates, but the whole period from 2009 through 2021 was abnormal. From 1990 through 2008, the Fed's short-term rate averaged 4.25%. From 2009 to 2021, the average was 0.52%.
Consumer rates followed the same pattern. From 1990 through 2008, the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate was 7.3%. From 2009 through 2021, it was 4%. Even now, mortgage rates around 6.4% are below the historical norm. With the Fed poised to cut rates soon, consumer rates could drift down a bit. But stronger inflationary pressure than in the past will probably prevent the Fed from cutting to anywhere near the levels during the decade after the Great Recession.

Gasoline prices

During Trump’s term, gas prices averaged $2.57, compared with $3.60 so far under Biden. Even adjusted for inflation, gas prices were cheaper under Trump. But Trump didn’t do anything to lower pump prices, even though he’s a fossil fuel lover whose mantra is “drill, baby, drill.” Trump simply came into office as the fracking boom was near peak production and energy providers all around the world were overproducing.
In terms of profitability, energy was the worst-performing sector during the Trump presidency because drillers were foregoing profits to gain market share. OPEC joined that game, adding to overproduction, which pushed prices to unusually low levels. When COVID hit in 2020, energy profits collapsed along with retail prices, and the whole industry went through a shakeout.
The result is that energy firms and their investors now prioritize profitability and “capital discipline” over market share — no matter who’s the president. “Our energy team believes that it is unlikely that a Trump administration would translate into more actual drilling relative to a Harris administration,” investing firm Raymond James concluded in a Sept. 10 analysis of possible election outcomes. “A push to decrease the price of US energy could potentially disincentivize production from domestic oil and gas names.” Energy firms, in short, got burned during Trump's presidency, and they're not going to do that again.

Overall economic growth

Trump wants people to believe he presided over the “best economy in the history of our country,” but it was really about the same as during Obama’s second term. Under Obama, from 2013 through 2016, real GDP growth averaged 2.5% per quarter. Under Trump, during the three years before COVID hit, it averaged 2.8%. Including COVID, GDP growth under Trump averaged 2.4%.
Growth under Biden has been stronger, averaging 3% per quarter. But higher inflation and interest rates have more than offset that in voters’ minds. Inflation peaked at 9% in 2022, and while it’s almost back to normal, Americans still feel stung by three years of a hot economy in which cheap imports and plentiful energy no longer cushioned shocks the way they used to. This year’s presidential election isn’t likely to change that.

New Story No. 13 Volleyball Back on the Road for Two Midweek Matches

The Gators travel to Atlanta, GA for a top-15 matchup against Georgia Tech on Wednesday and will face Alabama State on Thursday.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -
The No. 13 Florida volleyball team will face their first ranked opponent of the season, as they travel to Atlanta, GA for two midweek matchups. The Gators go head-to-head with No. 15 Georgia Tech on Wednesday inside McCamish Pavilion and will turn around to play Alabama State on Thursday inside O'Keefe Gym.

Wednesday's match against the Yellow Jackets will begin at 7 p.m. on ESPN2 with Holly McPeak and Anne Marie Anderson as Talent.

The Gators look to redeem their 2023 season-ending loss to Georgia Tech after falling 2-3 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. UF faces Alabama State for the first time since their 2019 matchup in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Match Notes Preview:
Previously from Florida Volleyball...

The Gators hit the road following a three match Florida Invitational. Florida fell in five sets to USF despite starting with a 2-1 lead. However, Florida bounced back to defeat Southern Indiana and Ohio State in four and three sets, respectively.

Attack Efficiency
Through six matches in 2024, the Gators sit at a .300 clip in kill percentage, good for the 10th highest total in the NCAA. Florida has hit under .290 in only one match so far which resulted in their only loss. Against Michigan State, Florida had an attack percentage of .361, their highest total since hitting .367 against Ole Miss 14 matches ago on Oct. 13, 2023. Florida has limited the attack errors having five or less in 18 of their 23 sets played so far.

Gators and the AVCA/TARAFLEX Polls
After moving to 5-1 in the 2024 season, the Florida volleyball team sits No. 13 in the AVCA/TARAFLEX Division I WVB Poll. After a wild week of NCAA volleyball, two teams who were previously unranked entered the top-25 and 11 teams dropped from Sept. 2 rankings. Florida remains in the top-15 following their 2-1 finish this past weekend in the Florida Invitational. The Gators only loss came from USF, who received votes in this week's poll.

Of their remaining 22 matches, Florida is set to face 10 opponents that are either ranked or receiving votes in the current polls, including two matches against top-ten opponents in back-to-back matchups.

Immediate Impact
Four of Florida's fresh faces - Jaela Auguste, Taylor Parks, Isabel Martin and Alec Rothe - have taken no time to adjust to their new environment. Through six matches, the three freshman and redshirt transfer contributed 59.62% kills, 87.24% assists, 46.34% aces, 32.57% digs, 68.75% block solos, 60.98% block assists, 63.16% total blocks and 58.78% points to Florida's average stat line. Additionally, graduate transfer Erin Engel dropped three aces in her Gator debut against Ohio State on Sept. 8. In her very first serve in the Orange and Blue, the Maryland transfer recorded an ace.

Musicians vs. Trump

Partial list of musicians who demanded DT not play their music at rallies. The party of tolerance is apparently only tolerant if you agree with them.

Was on a very liberal board recently (the-mainboard) and the amount of hatred towards right wing bands was off the charts - Ted Nugent, Kid Rock, Dave Matthews were mentioned as needing to die.

Pretty remarkable ....

Football Grits notes..

It’s so hard to judge progress in this type of game; a pissed-off Gator team against an overmatched, out-talented opponent. You watch a good play by the Gators and you ask yourself “Is that improvement or is that Samford?”. It’s some of both, but which one is which?

The deep ball to Badger was a great play and Badger will be a good player for us but if that’s Mizell or Tre that’s a touchdown. Still, Badger catches the ball and doesn’t go down easy. He almost looked like Kadarius Toney on that long pass in the first quarter.

OL and DL played better than last week but again, was that progress or was that Samford? I know which way I lean. The perimeter defense looked better.

Best player name: Samford DB Midnight Steward

Tackling, especially in the open field, definitely looks better than last year.

Young players who I thought played well: George Gumbs, Michael Boireau, and Greg Smith. Who didn’t: Kam Waites.

That personal foul on Jason Marshall was pretty iffy. The two helmet–to–helmets that should've been called on Samford were not.

Dez Watson made a “tackle” by grabbing the running back at the line of scrimmage and just standing there. Neither the RB nor the lineman trying to push him moved Big Dez an inch, LOL

What’s happened to Marcus Burke?

There must be a reason we don’t use Tre Wilson as a downfield receiver and I’d love to know what it is. He finally broke one Saturday night but I don't understand this throwing sideways to him most of the time.

Let the record show that 8-year veteran Jemarkus Weston finally made a play. Let the record also show that Steve Addazio is a very “meh” announcer.

Derek Lagway Jr, a.k.a. “DJ”. Similar to “Danny” and “Timmy”, 20 years from now you can just say “DJ” and everyone will know who you’re talking about. DJ is AR with better “QB” skills. “Too soon!” you say? “AR was generational!” you say? After the spring game, people told me that Baugh would make us forget about ETN so yeah, I get to do it too. DJ is everything we thought he would be and more. It looked like one of his high school games. The offense looks different with him, the receivers (who looked like they were running in mud last week) suddenly looked swift and elusive. We’ll have to see if it transitions to the SEC schedule, opposing DC’s now have a full game of tape on him to start scheming for him. Texas A&M is going to be interesting to see how DJ responds to an SEC defense.....speaking of that game…

You cannot start DJ over Graham, not yet. That wouldn’t be fair to Graham and it’s not best for DJ either. Graham didn’t suddenly become bad because DJ suddenly looked great. Yes, GM struggled against UM but we all know he’s better than that and he’s the 6th year senior. A mix of the two of them is great for the Gators and I think we’ll see that going forward. If Graham suddenly starts struggling again then you can make the case for DJ to take over. Just not yet.

I enjoyed Saturday night and I saw some progress. I also saw some Samford.

New Story Florida Tennis Unveils 2024-25 Matchups

The 2024-25 season will mark Head Coach Roland Thornqvist's 25th season at the University of Florida.

The three-day tournament is traditionally an invite-only event featuring the top players in the nation from the year prior. Other events in the September slate for Florida include ITA-All Americans (Sept. 21-29), and the Bedford Cup (Sept. 27-29).

In the month of October Florida will make a stop in Atlanta for the ITA Regional Championships (Oct. 10-14). The Gators will then travel to Oklahoma to compete at the Norman 35K starting on Oct. 28.

To start November some will move to Athens, Ga. for Sectionals (Nov. 7-10), while others will compete in San Diego for the ITA Conference Masters Championships (Nov. 7-10). The Gators will end the fall campaign in Texas at the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships (Nov. 19-24).
The Gators will start the spring season hosting the Florida Invitational featuring in-state opponents from Jan. 11-12. Florida will remain on its home courts to face North Florida (Jan. 19) before hosting ITA Kickoff Weekend (Jan. 25-26).

February will mark the beginning of dual play with an initial matchup in Ann Arbor against Michigan. The Gators will then head to Chicago for ITA National Indoors (Feb. 7-10). Continuing on the road slate, the team will travel to Auburn (Feb. 23), and head to South Carolina to play the Gamecocks on Feb. 28.

The Gators will remain on the road for SEC play going into March with a contest at Georgia (Mar. 2), before a two-match home stretch hosting: Texas (Mar. 7) and Texas A&M (Mar. 9). Florida will get back on the road to face Mississippi State (Mar. 14), and Alabama (Mar. 16).

To close out the month of March, Florida will welcome three conference opponents to the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex: Missouri (Mar. 21), Vanderbilt (Mar. 23), and Arkansas (Mar. 28). The final match of March will take place on the courts of new SEC members, Oklahoma (Mar. 30).

Florida will play four matches in April before the start of the post-season. The Gators will start at Tennessee (Apr. 4), and head to Kentucky (Apr. 6) before closing out conference play with home matches against LSU (Apr.11) and Ole Mis (Apr.13).

The 2024 SEC Tournament will be hosted by Auburn this year and is scheduled for April 16-20.

The Florida women's tennis program qualified for its 36th-straight NCAA Tennis Championships in 2024 and hosted the tournament's first and second rounds for the 23rd time in a possible 24 chances since the field expanded to 64 in 1999. The Gators have claimed seven NCAA National Championships, the second-most in the history of the sport.

Looking for 4 for UCF or Ole Miss For My Kids First game

Hey guys, I am a pastor and live 6 hours away and have to be back home for Sunday service so I was looking to take my wife and 2 daughters to a noon game. Being a pastor so far away always limits which games I can go to. Noon is the only time that gets me back at a decent hour. I see both of these games are scheduled for noon. My daughters have not been to a game in the swamp, just Williams Brice bc we live a close to Augusta. We got o that game every year we play there and we don't even have them on the schedule this year. Not sure why, but the UCF tix are one of the higher priced tix at the swamp this year on second hand sites and Ole Miss isn't as bad. Just thought I would check on here before I bought there to see if anyone had a better deal for either game (or any other noon game at the swamp if more are given that time). Thanks guys and Go Gators!

Football Instant Analysis: Raw and Unedited - Samford at Florida

Instant Analysis: Raw and Unedited - Samford at Florida

First Quarter: Samford starts with the ball, winning the toss and took the ball which I like if you are a big underdog. Run for about 8 on first down and there goes No 10 Pup Howard on the tackle what a pick up that was for UF. Good pressure by Kamran James but completion for a first down and tempo from the Bulldogs out to the 36. Defense needs to tighten up early…Looked like a fumble in slow motion and a review coming should be UF ball…..Nice work by the D and Jason Marshall forcing the turnover…

Florida first series from the Samford 44 yard line – MJ up the middle for maybe a gain of about two. Take the training wheels off DJ let him air it out. 2nd and 9 call it – HUGE opening by the OL and MJ down to the 26 yard line first and ten UF – DJ on the keeper but short gain on the Read Zone Option. UF going quickly back the line 2nd and 9 – MJ around the right side and zero room to run George at RG and Crenshaw Dickson gets the start at RT….big 3rd down early for DJ and crew – 3rd and 7 DJ to Hansen but just shot of the first down marker and UF going for it. I like the call – no reason to kick the FG and if you cant get a yard vs Samford you have real issues…..Wildcat with T Webb at QB and did not get it…wow..turnover on downs early in the 1st

2nd Series for Samford starting at the Samford 26 or so. End around and six yard gain by Samford and then another first down by Samford going fast to the Samford 30 – pass short gain nice tackle by RJ Moten in space. 2nd and 8 – quick pass for about 6 more yards brings up a 3rd and 2 – maybe call it one yard – Nice blocking and into UF territory on the nice run actually right to the 50 first down – run for about two now 2nd and 8 or so….tipped pass by Aaron Gates long 3rd and 8 – Sapp and James at DE now with Searcy…nice scramble and first down by the Samford QB – 1st and 10 now at the UF 38…..luckily for the D a bad snap and Samford lost about 8 yards..2nd and 18 – quick throw off the mark and 3rd and 18 now ---Thornton out Turner out Moore, Denson, and Slackman all out tonight…..huge pick up but a flag luckily for the D again ---Holding….3rd and 28 now…under 6 to play in the first…3rd and 18 again they say –loss great tackle for loss by GUMBS…

2nd series for the Gators with Dike deep and fair catch at the UF 14 and Lagway out for second series of the game with 4:48 to go. Air it out a bit right now….1st and 10 from the 14 and run by MJ up the middle for about 6 . 2nd and 4 with 4:29 to play in the first….there you go DJ Lagway to Elijah Badger 77 yards down to the 3 yard line…

1st and Goal from the 3 yard line – Wildcat again with MJ this time….MJ down to the one yard line with under 3 to play…TD MJ 7-0 Gators….

3rd series for Samford down 7 under three in the first quarter…five yard gain but good discipline by Howard on the edge staying home…Gumbs and Sapp at DE QB keeper for a first down…1st and 10 –from the 36 –quick pass out to the 42 yard line – 2nd and 5 Samford goes fast on offense all the time – Good pressure up the middle and QB throws it away before a sack. 3rd and five Sapp with the pressure….1:14 to go in the first – Fumble on the exchange but Samford falls on it after the loss of four punt time…

Dike with the fair catch at the 28 of UF and :23 seconds left in the first quarter. DJ Lagway getting his guys FIRED up on the sidelines before they take the field for this possession. There goes my guy Baugh on his first carry of the night for gain of 7 yards….2nd and 3 end of the first quarter and he is the best RB on the team imo….7-0 UF after one quarter of play

Start of the 2nd QT – and there goes Baugh again for a first down 14 more yards. At the UF 49 – NICE pass to Dike down to the five yard line 44 more yards by Lagway…Dang Baugh fumble into the endzone..

1st and 10 UF ball at the Samford 18-yard line – Daniels for run of about three around the left edge – Daniels for about three more or so. 3rd and 3 – from the ten yard line – NICE Aidan Warner keeper and a TD!! First career TD for Warren - Final score 45-7 Gators......final numbers on Lagway 18/25 for 456-yards and three TDs. The underneath pass for 80 should count as a run imo but it counts...either way he looked amazing tonight on target and the entire game I thought only made two bad passes..the deep ball in triple coverage and the one to Hansen in the endzone...look unreal all night with accuracy....losing streak is over.......

New Story Important Visit Weekend for Star WR

Yes, he is a public UF commit, but with so many teams coming after him it is a very important weekend for him to get back to Gainesville. Not only is he scheduled to visit for the game but should be in town for two days giving him plenty of one on one time with the coaches after the game...

Later in the week we will talk about some of the other guys heading down for this game....

It is important honestly for all UF verbals. Fellow WR commit Naeshaun Montgomery will be in town and Gators Myles Johnson and Jalen Wiggins....
