UF Gymnastics, Tennis & Lacrosse (And Golf/Track)

Didn't want to hijack your thread just in case you were traumatized in a pool or on a track šŸ˜
I love all Gator sports and started this thread just to have a place to discuss and showcase spring sports that are seldom talked about on these boards. Adding a couple more to the thread would be great.

Men's Tennis continued rolling through their SEC schedule Friday, winning at Arkansas 6-1. The defending national champs and #1 ranked Gators improved to 15-2, 5-0. They won the doubles point 6-3, 6-2, then 5 of the 6 singles matches, 4 of them in straight sets to cruise past the Razorbacks. Next match is Friday 4/1 hosting LSU.

Gator men currently sit in 3rd place with one day left in the swimming championships. No chance to catch Texas or Cal, but should be able to hold onto 3rd.

And I think they came in ranked 6th. Overperforming thus far.

#16 UF Women's Tennis dominated Ole Miss 7-0 at home Friday to improve to 13-4, 5-2 in the SEC. UF won the doubles point 7-5, 6-4, then swept all 6 singles matches in straight sets to easily beat the Rebels. Next up is Mississippi State Sunday at 1 pm.

UF Women's Tennis won their 6th straight with a tough 4-3 win over Mississippi State Sunday afternoon. #16 Gators are now 14-4, 6-2 in the SEC. They lost the doubles match, then McCartney Kessler won for UF at #1 singles. Sara Dahlstrom won at #5 singles and Marlee Zein won at #3 singles, both in straight sets, to put the Gators up 3-1. Carly Briggs won at #4 singles to clinch the win for Florida, although the Bulldogs won the last 2 matches to finish at #3 & #6 singles to narrow the margin of victory. The ladies' next match is Friday 4/1 at Kentucky.

UF lacrosse starts their AAC schedule Sunday at Cincinnati. The Gators are on a 5 game winning streak and stand at 7-4 after beating Mercer in Macon, GA 19-5 on Wednesday.

#1 UF Men's Tennis has a Sunday match hosting Vanderbilt. The Gators are now 16-2, 8-0 in the SEC after blasting LSU 7-0 on Friday.
Meanwhile, the UF Women's tennis team is on a 7 game winning streak, sitting at 15-4, 7-2 in the SEC after beating Kentucky 6-2 Friday in Lexington. They play at Vanderbilt Sunday at 1 pm.

#2 UF Gymnastics had a tremendous weekend in Auburn for the NCAA Regionals where they qualified for the NCAA Championships 4/14-16 in Ft. Worth, Texas. Florida won the first 4 team set of the regionals on Thursday over Iowa State, Ohio State & Denver with a score of 198.125 in which Trinity Thomas scored perfect 10's on the Floor Exercise and Uneven bars, plus the All Around title with a score of 39.875. Megan Skaggs had an All Around score of 39.625 and Leann Wong posted a 39.600 to help the Gators to the win. In Saturday posted the highest score in the nation so far this year with a score of 198.775, beating 2n place Auburn by a full point, which is a huge amount in a championship match. Kentucky & Denver finished 3rd and 4th, so Auburn & Florida head off to the 8-team NCAA Championships. Trinity Thomas scored two more perfect 10's, this time in the Floor Exercise and the Vault, with Leann Wong, also, getting a 10 in the Vault. Thomas won the All Around again with a score of 39.900, with Wong posting a 39.875, Skaggs getting a 39.675 and Sloane Blakeley getting a 39,350 to lead the Gators. If they continue performing at this level it will be very difficult for another team to beat them for the NCAA title and it will be interesting to see who the other 6 teams are who qualify, with defending champion Michigan & #1 Oklahoma expected to be the toughest challengers. Florida heads to Ft. Worth with a record of 26-0-1. Incredible!!

#2 Gator gymnasts are paired in the national semi-finals with #3 Michigan, #11 Missouri & #7 Auburn. Their meet is at 6 pm on April 14 on ESPN2. The top 2 finishers advance to the 4-team finals on April 16 at 1 pm on ABC.
The other semifinal has #1 Oklahoma, #5 Alabama, #8 Minnesota and #4 Utah competing 4/14 at 1 pm on ESPN2.
#6 LSU, #9 Cal-Berkeley & #10Kentucky were elminated.

Top ranked Gator Men's tennis overwhelmed Vanderbilt Sunday in Nashville 6-1 to improve their record to 17-2, 9-0 in the SEC. The won the doubles point 6-3, 6-3, but lost the 1st completed singles' match at #6 to tie the score at 1-1. The Gators then reeled off 5 straight singles matches in straight sets for the easy win. Next up is at Alabama on Friday.
The UF Women's tennis team, also, whipped up on Vanderbilt Sunday, also, by a 6-1 score. They won the doubles point 0-6, 6-2, 6-4, then won at #5, #1 & #4 singles in straight sets to clinch the match. Vandy won at #6 singles, then UF won at #3 & #2 singles to close out the scoring. The Gators are now 16-4, 8-2 in the SEC, with their next match at Alabama on Friday.

#15 UF Women's Tennis rolled over Alabama in Gainesville Friday 4-0 to run their record to 17-4, 9-2 in the SEC for the 9th straight win. Th easily won the doubles point 6-2, 6-3, the picked up another point at #1 singles when Alabama's player retired with an injury in the first set down 4-3, giving Florida's McCartney Kessler her 11th straight SEC singles match win. UF got their next point at #6 singles when Sydney Berlin won 6-2, 6-2. Freshman Alicia Dudeney clinched the match for the Gators by winning at #4 singles 6-4, 6-1. The Gators have a tough match on Sunday, as they host #13 Auburn at Noon.

Meanwhile #1 UF Men's Tennis won their 13th straight match in Tuscaloosa, beating Alabama 5-2 to run their record to 18-2, 10-0 in the SEC. They won a very tight doubles point 6-4, 4-6, 7-6, then Josh Goodyear got their first singles point by winning his match at #5 singles 6-1, 7-6. Sam Riffice then won at #2 singles 6-2, 6-4, followed by Andy Andrade at #4 singles 7-5, 6-0. Duarte Vale won at #3 singles 7-6, 6-3. Alabama won the last 2 points of the match to make the final score 5-2. The disappointing thing about today was that Florida #1-ranked amateur Ben Shelton was upset at #1 singles by the #60 rated player from Bama 2-6, 6-1, 6-3. The Gators' next match is Sunday at 1 pm at Auburn. Go Gators!

#10 Gator lacrosse won their 7th straight game, going to 9-4, 2-0 in the AAC by beating up on Old Dominion 22-6. The game was on You Tube, as will their next game at AAC rival Vanderbilt next Saturday at 12:30. The Gators had 14 different ladies score goals Saturday, led by freshman star Emma LoPinto's 4. Florida scored early and often, jumping to an 8-1 lead after the 1st quarter and 14-2 at halftime, coasting to an efficient, easy win. This team lost 6 starters from last year's team to graduation and are playing a lot of freshmen, but seem to be getting better and better with each game they play.

UF Women's Tennis dropped to 17-5, 9-3 in the SEC, getting whipped by #13 Auburn at home Sunday 6-1. The doubles point set the tone as Auburn edged out the Gators 6-3, 3-6, 7-6. Alicia Dudney won the first completed singles match at #4 6-0, 6-1 to tie the match. But after that it was all Auburn, as they won the remaining 5 singles matches, with only one of them going 3 sets. The Gators next match is Saturday at 12:30 when they host South Carolina.

Meanwhile, the Gator Men's Tennis team won their 14th straight match, winning at Auburn 6-1, improving to 19-2, 11-0 in the SEC. Florida won the doubles point 6-3, 6-3, then won at #6, #5 & #3 singles in straight sets to go up 4-0 and clinch the win. Andy Andrade then won at #4 singles 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, then Josh Goodger won at #5 singles 6-2, 7-6 before Ben Shelton lost at #1 singles to finish the day. The Gators conclude their regular season next Sunday as they host Texas A&M at 12:30. By the way, I'm not sure how the ITA rankings are determined, but for the rankings that came out April 6, TCU was #1 at 19-3, Ohio State is #2 at 19-2, with the Gators #3. How can you be #1, win 14 straight matches and drop to #3?

Florida Gymnastics won their semifinal meet, advancing with Auburn to compete with Oklahoma and Utah for the national championship on Saturday. Alabama and Minnesota were eliminated in the afternoon meet, #3 Michigan and Missouri were knocked out in the evening event. Trinity Thomas got the only perfect 10 for the entire day, getting it on the floor exercise. The Gators got off to a slow start on the Vault, having to count 2 scores under 9.80. But they were strong the rest of the way. They were in 3rd place after 2 rotations, but Michigan had 2 falls on the uneven bars and 2 more on the Vault to take them out of contention and open the door for Florida. They were trailing Auburn after 3 rotations, but killed it on the floor exercise to close out the competition and ended up beating Auburn 197.9750 to 197.8375.

Just as an explanation for novices to college gymnastics, 6 athletes compete in each of the 4 events, with the lowest score being dropped. The other 5 scores are added together for a cumulative score for each event, 50 being a perfect score per event. During the regular season, two judges score routines on each event and those two scores are averaged for the gymnastā€™s final score. At regionals, four judges score each routine with the high and low scores dropped and the middle two averaged. At nationals, six judges score each routine with the high and low dropped and the middle four averaged.

After the 1st rotation for the NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championship, #4 Utah leads with 49.125; #7 Auburn 2nd with 49.4250, #2 Florida 3rd with 49.350; #1 Oklahoma 4th with 49.1875. The announcers said Utah's strongest event is the Beam, which they performed on first. The Gators lowest scoring event, on average, this year has been the Vault, which they started off with. Oklahoma had 2 critical mistakes on the floor exercise and Auburn was very solid on the Uneven Bars.

Oklahoma had their season low on the Floor Exercise to open the meet, but then scored their season high on the Vault. After 2 events, Utah leads with a 98.9750, Florida is 2nd with 98.8750, Oklahoma 3rd with 98.8500 and Auburn 4th with 98.6250. Very tight match. The Gators were solid on the bars, but need to score well on the Beam to try to take the lead.

Going to the final event, Oklahoma has taken the lead with a total score of 148.5750. Florida is 2nd at 148.3750, Utah 3rd at 148.2000 and Auburn 4th at 148.0125. For the Gators to win the National title, they need a really strong Floor Exercise while hoping the Sooners stumble a little on the beam

Florida finishes runner-up to Oklahoma for the Gymnastics Title. Oklahoma's final score was 198.2000, Florida was 198.0875. Utah finished 3rd at 197.750 and Auburn 4th at 197.350. Trinity Thomas won the All Around title with a 4 event score of 39.8625. Leann Wong was 3rd in the All Around at 39.5750 and Megan Skaggs was 5th at 39.5250. Oklahoma had no athletes competing in all 4 events, as their quality depth was the difference in the meet. The Gators had a solid meet, scoring 49.3500 on the Vault, 49.5250 on the Bars, 49.5000 on the Beam and 49.7125 on the Floor. But just came up short. They have been dominating a very strong SEC of late, but are coming up just short for several years since their 3 consecutive national titles in 2013-2015. It will be interesting to see the make-up of next year's team, as they were a veteran team losing Alyssa Baumann & Megan Skaggs as Grad Students with no more eligibility, plus have seniors Trinity Thomas, Savannah Schoenherr, Nya Reed & Leah Clapper, who have to decide whether or not to return for another year.

Meanwhile, the Gator Lacrosse team improved to 10-4, 3-0 in the AAC by beating Vanderbilt in Nashville Saturday 16-8. They trailed 3-1 after the first quarter, but outscored Vandy 7-0 in the 2nd and 5-1 in the 3rd to take control. Emma LoPinto scored 7 goals and Danielle Pavinelli 4 to lead the Florida attack. Next up is another AAC game at home against Temple next Saturday.

Good showing by the ladies. Would've been nice to pick up a 2nd athletic natty this year, but still a few sports out there we have a chance.

UF's #16 Women's Tennis team finished their regular season 18-5, 10-3 in the SEC with a very tight 4-3 win over #23 South Carolina Saturday afternoon. This win locked them in as the 4th seed and double-bye in the SEC tournament, held at UF starting April 20. The gators easily won the doubles point 6-2, 6-3 and McCartney Kessler put the Gators up 2-0 by winning at #1 singles 6-1, 6-4. Sara Dahlstrom won for Florida at #5 singles 6-4, 6-1, but South Carolina won at #2 singles 6-2, 7-5, then at #4 singles 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 and #6 singles 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 to tie the match at 3-3. But at #3 singles Gator freshman Alicia Dudeney came from behind to win her match and the clinching point for the team, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2. Florida's women's tennis has been down the last few years after winning numerous conference and national titles and behind a constant contender for many years. But coach Roland Thorndqvist and former Gator great Lauren Embree are rebuilding the program and it's good to see them ranked and challenging again.
If you want to read about one of Florida's all time great coaches than many don't know about, read this link.

#4 seeded UF Women's Tennis won their quarterfinal match today against #5 seed Arkansas 4-1. The Gators did it the hard way, though, by losing the doubles point to start the match 3-6, 6-3, 4-6. Emma Shelton tied the match from her spot at #6 singles 6-1, 6-1. Then McCartney Kessler put the Gators up 2-1 by winning at #1 singles 6-4, 6-1. Alicia Dudeney then won at #3 singles 6-2, 7-6, then Sara Dahlstrom won at #5 singles 6-7, 6-0, 6-0 to clinch the victory for Florida. They now await the winner of the match between #1 seed Texas A&M and #8 seed Vanderbilt in the semifinal match that will be held Saturday at noon.

#1 seed UF Men's Tennis beat LSU 4-1 in their first match of the SEC tournament in Athens, GA. The Gators (20-2) won the doubles point 6-0, 0-6, 6-2, the Ben Shelton cruised at #1 singles 6-3, 6-3. LSU won the next point at #6 singles 2-6, 4-6, then the Gators' Mattias Siimar won at #5 singles 6-2, 6-3 to put Florida up 3-1. Sam Riffice then won at #2 singles 6-1, 6-4 to clinch the match for Florida. The Gators play #5 seed Tennessee, who upset #4 seed Gerogia today, in the semifinals Saturday at 2 pm.

The #10 Gator Lacrosse team (#8 in RPI) won the AAC regular season title today by beating Temple at home 18-7. Both teams came into the game with identical records at 10-4 overall, 3-0 in conference play. Florida jumped out to a 5-1 1st quarter lead, expanded it to 13-4 at the half and coasted from there, playing with a running clock (10+ point lead) for much of the 2nd half. Sophomore Danielle Pavinelli paced the Gators with 5 goals and 2 assists. Emily Heller had a solid game with 2 goals, 2 assists and 7 draw controls. After her first year in 2010 when they went 10-8 with an all freshman lineup, Coach Amanda O'Leary's Gators have won their conference title every year. Her career coaching record coming in to this season was 348-113 and she has led Florida to an NCAA Final 4 and 6 NCAA Quarterfinals (Elite 8 equivalent). This year's team had to replace 6 of their 11 starters from last year's team and got off to a slow start, partly due to the brutal non-conference schedule they played. But with today's win, Florida has won 9 straight matches as they head to a Wednesday game against #22 Jacksonville, then finish the regular season next Saturday at AAC opponent East Carolina, who will host the conference tournament the following week. Just an FYI, the AAC only has 6 teams right now - Florida, Temple, East Carolina, Cincinnati, Old Dominion and Vanderbilt.

#15 ranked and 4-seed UF Women's Tennis team lost a heartbreaker to #6 ranked and 1-seed Texas A&M in the semifinals of the SEC tournament. The Aggies won a nailbiter doubles point 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 to put Florida in the position of needing to win 4 of the 6 singles matches and they almost pulled it off. A&M won fairly easily at #1 siingles 6-0, 6-3, but Sara Dahlstrom and Emma Shelton won at #5 and #6 singles 6-4, 6-0 and 6-3, 6-4 to tie the match up. The Gators Alicia Dudeney won at #3 singles 6-3, 6-3, while A&M won at #4 singles 6-2, 7-5 to tie it up at 3-3. The deciding point came down to #2 singles but UF's Marlee Zein couldn't pull it out, losing 7-6, 6-4 to give the Aggies the victory. The 19-6 Gators will now await their seeding and placement in the NCAA tournament, which begins May 6.

The #3 ranked UF Men's Tennis team beat #5 ranked Tennessee in the semifinals of the SEC tournament Saturday 4-1. This was the Gators 17th straight win and the 2nd time this year they've beaten the Vols, running their record to 22-2 heading into Sunday's SEC finals against #10 ranked Kentucky, a team they barely beat 4-3 March 6 in Lexington. Today, in doubles, Tennessee won the first completed set at #2 6-4, but the Gators then won at #1 6-4 and then won a tight set at #3 7-6 for the first point. Duante Vale won the first completed singles match at #3 6-4, 6-3, then Josh Goodger won at #6 singles 7-5, 6-3 to put the Gators up 3-0. Sam Riffice went down at #2 singles for Florida 4-6, 6-7, but Andy Andrade came from behind at #4 singles 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 to clinch the match for Florida 4-1. When the match ended Ben Shelton was losing at #1 singles for UF and Mattias Siimar was dead even at #5 singles.
