Three Takeaways from the Florida Gators vs. South Carolina Gamecocks Series
The Florida Gators closed out their regular season with a home series win against the South Carolina Gamecocks. Florida took two out of three against South Carolina at Condron Family Ballpark.
The Gators dominated through the first two series games but struggled to hit on Saturday and couldn’t complete the series sweep. Here are three takeaways from the Florida Gators vs. South Carolina Gamecocks Series
1. Florida ends the regular season with a 35-20 record
The Florida Gators have completed their regular season, and they’ll start playing in the SEC Tournament on Tuesday and should qualify for the NCAA Tournament the following week. After a slow start and a tough stretch in the middle of their SEC schedule, Florida finished the 2022 regular season with a 35-20 record.
The Gators had plenty of success at home as they went 22-11 when playing at Condron Family Ballpark. On the road, Florida had their struggled but still finished with a 12-9 away record. In SEC play, Florida went .500 as they were 15-15 in their conference record.
While Florida didn’t win forty games in their regular season, Florida still had a quality regular season playing with one of the toughest schedules in the country. They also played pretty well with one of the youngest pitching staff in the country and lost their best pitcher with about a month left in the regular season.
2. Failed to complete the sweep again
While taking two out of three against the South Carolina Gamecocks is no small task, the Gators had the opportunity to sweep them but failed. Florida’s offense was dominant through the first two games but only scored one run on three hits in the series finale.
This isn’t the first time Florida has had the chance the sweep an opponent and laid an eye in the series finale. Against Kentucky, Florida outscored the Wildcats 18-3 but lost 8-1 in the series finale.
Even though Florida has been playing very well through the past month, the Gators need to do a better job of closing out their series. If Florida had won another game or two, they could have gotten a better seed in the SEC Tournament.
3. Sterlin Thompson had an impressive weekend at the plate
Sophomore outfielder Sterlin Thompson had another productive weekend at the plate as he recorded a hit in each game against the South Carolina Gamecocks. Thompson has been one of Florida’s most consistent hitters in their lineup and showed that again last week.
During the South Carolina series, Thompson went 5-for-12 (.416 batting average) with one extra-base hit, two walks, and two RBIs. Thompson was also one of three Gators to record a hit against the Gamecocks in the regular-season finale as he singled up the middle in the bottom of the fifth.
Sterlin Thompson closed out the 2022 regular season with an impressive stat line. The Ocala native slashed .357/.451/.576 with 75 hits, twelve doubles, two triples, ten home runs, 48 RBIs, 33 walks, and a 1.027 OPS.
Thompson has had a terrific sophomore season at Florida, but it could also be his final season at Florida. With Thompson being a draft-eligible sophomore, MLB teams have taken notice of Thompson’s production and could sneak into the first round of the 2022 MLB Draft.
