#4 UF softball (30-5) dropped their 2nd game of the season to UCF (30-9) Wednesday night, 7-0, The Gators only got 3 singles for the game, while UCF opened the game against Katie Chronister (6-2) with a single, double, single and home run. Rylee Trlicek relieved and she pitched 5 innings, giving up 3 runs. Freshman Haley Pittman threw the final 2 innings in the circle. UF travels to #3 Alabama this weekend for a series that will go a long way towards deciding the SEC regular season championship, as well as seeding for the NCAA tournament. Currently Arkansas is 13-2 in league play, while Florida is 10-2, and Alabama is 11-4. UF & Arkansas do not play this year.

Just got through watching the #8 UF Volleyball team (20-3) beat Morehead St. (17-2) 3-0 in the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament in Omaha on ESPN3. The score was 25-14, 25-19, 25-19. The Gators played great the 1st set, but were inconsistent the last 2 sets and will need to play better if they expect to go much further. While they hit a solid. 303 for the match, they had 11 service errors and 5 block errors and had numerous overpasses that led to easy points for Morehead State. UF next plays Sunday against #9 Ohio State, who knocked Missouri out in straight sets today.

#1 UF Gymnastics competes in the NCAA semfinals on ESPN2 this afternoon at 1 pm vs. Minnesota, Michigan and Cal-Berkley. The top 2 teams advance to Saturdays finals. The other bracket competes later today and consists of Alabama, Oklahoma, Utah & LSU. Florida has been hurt by injuries, first to their best performer, Trinity Thomas, who sprained an ankle during warmups prior to their meet with Alabama on March 5. Normally competing in all 4 events, Thomas has only been able to go in the uneven bars the last few weeks, but is hoping to be able to compete in all 4 events today. If not, the Gators' chances are hurt. On top of that, a major contributor on the beam and floor exercise, Sydney Johnson-Scharpf, tore her Achilles tendon April 4 and is done for the year. Plus Halley Taylor damaged a calf muscle April 4 as well and may not be able to compete. Here's a more in depth article.

The #1 ranked Gator gymnasts didn't perform at their best, but they placed 2nd in Session 1 to advance to tomorrow's national championship meet. Michigan won the session today, looking great. They scored 197.8625, Florida had 197.4375, Cal had 197.3625 and Minnesota scored 197.1875. Trinity Thomas did compete in all 4 events and was solid. But we had problems with both the uneven bars and vault, having to count scores below 9.8. But excellent scores on the vault and floor exercises carried the day. To win a national championship, however, they will need to perform better tomorrow. To me this judging was better than during the regular season because they used 6 judges for each event, dropping the low and high scores, then averaging the other 4. Goooo Gators!!

One other point about gymnastics - During regular season dual meets, there are only 2 judges per event and their scores are averaged after each performance. For the SEC Tournament and NCAA Regionals, they use 4 judges per event, with the high and low score dropped and the remaining 2 scores averaged. But for the NCAA Finals, there are 6 judges - the high and low scores are dropped and the remaining 4 are averaged. It's still subjective, but the subjectivity is spread out among more people, making it more accurate, IMO.

#9 UF Lacrosse clinched at least a share of the AAC regular season championship with a 17-7 win over Vanderbilt, who came into the game undefeated in conference play like UF. They play again Sunday in Gainesville.

Tom Jones memorial track meet at UF this weekend. My son competed in the high jump this afternoon. Gator won the event. Have some pros running tomorrow in the open division. Grant Holloway running 110h, Noah Lyles, Jeff Demps and Justin Gatlin are competing in the open 100. Gators are getting healthy just at the right time. Legit shot at a top 3 finish when the NCAAs roll around

#5 UF Softball won their opening game in Tuscaloosa against #3 Alabama 2-0 behind a 3 hitter from Elizabeth Hightower. The Gators got 6 hits and stranded 8 base runners off Bama ace Montana Fouts, who had 11 K's. But light hitting Gator SS Sarah Longley had a 2 out 2 run single in the top of the 2nd for the only runs of the game, as the Gators improved to 31-5, 11-2 in the SEC. Game 2 Saturday at 2 PM on ESPN2.

UF Baseball hung on to beat Missouri 8-5 in a rain-delayed opening game of their 3-game series. Franco Aleman was OK through 3 innings but got blown up in the Top of the 4th. The Gators had scored 1 run in the 2nd on a solo HR from Jud Fabian, then plated 6 runs in the bottom of the 3rd, led by Kirby McMullen's 3-run HR. But Missouri came back with 4 in the top of the 4th after getting an unearned run in the top of the 3rd. Christian Scott relieved with 1 out in that inning and threw scoreless ball the rest of the way, giving up only 1 hit to pick up his 2nd win of the week. The Gators are now 23-11, 7-6 in the SEC and due to the forecast for rain all day Sunday, they will try to squeeze in a doubleheader Saturday, starting at 1 pm on SEC+. Tommy Mace will start the first game and I imagine Hunter Barco will start game 2, with Jack Leftwich expected to be on the mound at some point.

Gator baseball overcame an early 5-1 deficit to beat Missouri 8-6 in the first game of their Saturday doubleheader. Jack Leftwich pitched the last 4 innings and gave up no walks or hits in picking up his 2nd win in 4 days. Tommy Mace threw the first 5 innings and was charged with all 6 runs, all earned, as the Gators made no errors today. UF had 10 hits, led by Jacob Young, Jud Fabian and Colby Halter with 2 each. Josh Rivera had 3 RBI and Kirby McMullen had 2. Game 2 starts around 5 pm.

Gator softball won their 2nd straight game in Tuscaloosa, beating Alabama 9-2 to improve their record to 32-5, 12-2 in the SEC. Bama falls to 32-7, 11-6 in the SEC. Natalie Lugo pitched the first 4 innings, giving up 4 hits and 2 runs. Katie Chronister threw the last 3 shutout innings. The Gators were helped by 3 Bama errors and scored 2 runs on wild pitches, while Kendyl Lindaman hit a grand slam HR, Cheyenne Lindsay and Charla Echols had 2 hits each. UF goes for the sweep Sunday at 2 pm on the SEC Network

Beating an SEC team 3 times in less than 24 hours is pretty cool. Up to 25-11, 9-6 in the SEC. Sully has had to make numerous adjustments to his defense and pitching, but this week they went 5-0. Hunter Barco looked really good today. Kendrick Calilao had 2 more RBI today and played a solid 1st base. Even though Carrion made a 9th inning error today that cost them 2 unearned runs, he's stabilized things at SS. Plus he's contributing at the plate. Rivera seems more comfortable at 2nd base and hit well this weekend, too. And Colby Halter is a great infielder and is an upgrade at 3rd bas. They get Jacksonville over there on Tuesday, then head to Auburn next weekend. Would be nice to win those 4 games before Vanderbilt comes to town. But great week for Gator baseball.

UF Lacrosse beat up on Vanderbilt again, 22-9, to run their record to 11-2, 8-0 in the AAC. They have 2 more conference games next weekend at Old Dominion, but they are 3-11, 1-6 in conference play and shouldn't be a real challenge for the Gators. Congrats on yet another conference title for the Gators' Lacrosse team.

UF softball couldn't sweep Bama, losing 4-2 today. Uncharacteristically, the Gators committed 3 errors in the 4th inning that led to the 2 unearned runs that broke a 2-2 tie and gave the Tide the win. UF is firmly in 2nd place in the SEC behind surprising Arkansas.

Gator volleyball advanced to the Elite 8 of the NCAA tournament by beating Ohio State tonight 3-1 in an exciting match on ESPN2 - 25-20, 26-24, 23-25, 25-16. They play #1 ranked Wisconsin Monday at 6:30 on ESPNU.

Unfortunately, Gator volleyball lost an excruciating match tonight to The #1 Wisconsin Badgers. The score was 28-30, 25-18, 22-25, 25-18 and 12-15. The Gators came from 6 points down in the first set and actually had a set point before dropping it in overtime. They won the 2nd set fairly easily, then lost another close 3rd set. They won the 4th set by pulling away from a tie game the last 5-8 points. In the 5th set they were ahead 5-2 and 9-6 before Wisconsin closed it out on 9-3 run. Florida held the Badgers to their lowest hitting percentage of the year by a long shot. They were averaging .345 and their lowest of the year was .290, but tonight they were only .153. But we only hit .170. We had 63 kills to their 59, We had 7 service aces to their 4, 12 blocks to their 9 and had 12 service errors to their 11. We won the 2nd and 4th sets fairly easily by 7 points. But Wisky won the 3 tight sets and made the crucial plays when it counted the most. Another great year for Mary Wise and Florida volleyball.

#15 Gator baseball won their midweek game at Jacksonville 8-7 to improve to 26-11. JU is terrible this year, 0-9 in their conference, 7-23 overall, but they scored 7 runs tonight on only 5 hits. UF used 7 pitchers, who issued 7 walks and hit 4 batters. The Gators did play errorless ball, got 13 hits and 7 walks, plus 1 HBP, but stranded 12 baserunners. Sterlin Thompson had a 2-run homer, Corey Acton played second base tonight and had 2 hits and 2 RBI., as did Colby Halter. Trey Van Der Weide was the winning pitcher, as he went 2.2 innings when the Gators took the lead for good in the 7ht, only giving up 1 hit, but hitting a batter with the bases loaded, the run being charged to a prior pitcher. Jordan Carrion got the final out for the save. A win is a win and now it's on to Auburn.

#3 Florida softball improved to 33-6 in Ft. Myers today, shutting out Florida Gulf Coast 3-0 behind Natalie Lugo's 3 hitters. Lugo improved to 11-1 on the year. Florida scored in the top of the 1st after a Hannah Adams single to open the game when Cheyenne Lindsay hit a HR. They added an insurance run in the top of the 7th on a sac fly from Jamie Hoover. The Gators host South Carolina for 3 games this weekend. The Gamecocks are only 2-13 in the SEC, 23-17 overall and are losing to #16 Clemson tonight early 3-0.

Oklahoma softball has the best hitting team ever, plus Coach Rocha to handel the pitching staff. To beat them this year is like David vs. Goliath.

Found this on another board ---

MLB released their latest rankings this morning and a couple of interesting notes:

1. To no surprise Jud dropped out of the top ten to 49th.

2. Mace is still ranked oddly high to me at 31st.

3. We've got a handful of highly ranked commits that likely won't make it to campus like Andrew Painter, Jay Allen, Chase Petty and maybe even Phillip Abner.

4. Hickey has climbed into the top 150 at 126, I'd think he will keep climbing if he shows progress catching.

5. Leftwich is the only other Gator in the top 150 and is 136 after dropping from the initial rankings.

Here's the full rankings if anyone is interested:

TAM won the doubles point, then we quickly won the #6 singles match to tie the score. But TAM won the #1 singles match, we won the #2 singles and #5 singles, they won at #3 singles and Blaise Bicknell won the deciding match at #4 singles 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 to give the Gators the win. Would love to get a men's tennis natty. One of the few remaining sports we don't have a team natty.

‘‘Twas touch and go in the 3rd set
Hate to see someone from the SEC other than the great Mary Wise get a volleyball title. She's such a class act and dominated the conference for almost 25 years before KY rose up 4-5 years ago. But I honestly think Texas is going to win it this year.

#1 UF Men's Tennis lost to #5 Tennessee today in the finals of the SEC tournament, 4-3. The Gators are 20-2, with their only other loss coming in January at Texas. The Gators have been struggling in the doubles the last 6 weeks or so, but until today had been able to overcome their issues by winning at least 4 of their singles matches. Coming in to today the Gators were 161-32 in singles matches, 55-33 in doubles matches. This could work out to be a blessing for the NCAA tournament, as it kind of relieves the pressure of a long winning street and hopefully gets the guys more focused and determined heading to the Regionals starting May 7.

Gator Lacrosse improved to 12-2 today with a 18-6 AAC win over Old Dominion.

Meanwhile, the #3 UF softball team dropped the opening of their Senior Weekend home series against lowly South Carolina 2-1. A freshman pitcher held the Gators to 4 hits and a lone run in the 1st inning. UF hit into 2 double plays and just couldn't get a clutch hit in losing to the 24-18, 3-13 Gamecocks. This really hurts their chances of catching Arkansas for the SEC title.
