Hey buddy...out of curiosity...about when we’re you a Nebraska fan and when did you become a Florida fan?

A friend of mine who is traumatized in his formative years in January of 1996 would like to know....not that that friend is me....nothing phases me.

Also curious because that likely means you have a WAAAAYdifferent view of the fiesta bowl that year if you hadn’t become a gator fan yet.

I grew up in Denver with Nebraska alum parents, so all through the 80s, through about ‘98 Nebraska was my team. I was definitely rooting for NU in 96. Honestly I thought Spurrier was obnoxious. I joined the Coast Guard and got stationed in Key West from 97 to 2000 and started watching the Gators. I decided watching the Alex Brown UT game that I wanted to go to UF. Visited campus and saw a couple of the early Terror between the rims games in the OConnell center, and that sealed it.

Yep, just like Spurrier, who grew up in tennis-sea,
became the Heisman QB and the eventual head coach for the Vols.
Really!? Any senior Southerner who's paid attention to Southern-football history ought to be aware of this SEC star player and head coach:

Johnny Majors, who was born, "grew up", and played his high-school football in Tennessee. He starred as "triple-threat tailback" for the Vols (1953[?]--1956), meaning he also had a role as a passer in the offense. But he never played for Gen. Bob Neyland, who was newly retired. So Majors played instead for 2 obscure head coaches, both U.T.-player-alums: Apparent-caretaker Harvey Robinson (1953--1954) and Bowden Wyatt (1955--1962). He earned only enough votes toward the Heisman Trophy to become that season's 1st runner-up (1956)[†]. Which created a scandal unique in that trophy's history, because Heisman winner Paul Hornung was playing for a Notre Dame team that had a losing record (2--8) that season!

Majors was hired as head football coach of long-laughable U. Pittsburgh Panthers (1973--1976, 1993--1996), and led them to a mythical national championship for their 1976 season (12--0). He was then happy to accept a new job: head coach at his alma mater U. Tennessee (1977--1992). He is credited with 3 SEC football championships, altho' the SEC stole 1½ of those championships (1985, 1990) from U.F., and gave sole possession to U.T.; their 1989 championship might have been completely legit [×].

Yet another scandal was created when U.T. forced Majors to resign after he'd had heart surgery late in the 1992 season, to be replaced by U.T.-player-alum and long-time assistant Phillip "Great Pumpkin" Fulmer. Outsiders probably assumed that the resignation was only some kind of U.T. formality to allow Majors to focus his energy on fighting his way thro' recovery from the surgery. But other explanations exist, more in the nature of a conspiracy for Fulmer to usurp the head-coaching job (1992--2008)[‡][××].

Note †: To nail down details (e.g., did he ever play for The General?): <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_Majors> (insert disclaimer about risks of trusting Wikipedia).

Note ‡: <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Tennessee_Volunteers_head_football_coaches>.

Note ×: Readers should expect not to see any mention on Wikipedia pages about Tennessee of how U.T. pried loose those 1985 & 1990 SEC football titles, altho' the details were documented at the time, e.g., by Gator Bait and presumably various Florida dailies. In 1990, U.F. was the SEC football champ on the field (1st season for Head Ball Coach Spurrier, who is determined that U.F. not forget that team's accomplishment, in the final year of penalties left from the relatively minor infractions by Galen Hall), and U.T. was only the runner-up. In 1985, despite a tie between U.F. and U.T. for the SEC championship on the field, U.F. was disqualified by the SEC (with Vandy acting as the conference's academically respectable front during the on-going Pell Probation). In 1989, some other school won the SEC championship on the field; U.F. was only 7--5 (SEC 4--3).

Note ××: I'll leave it to honest U.T. insiders to argue the details of the Majors-Fulmer usurpation scandal. Don't know if all the facts have ever come out; Majors (b. 1935), Fulmer (b. 1950), and A.D. Doug Dickey (b. 1932) are still living.

Nebraska smacked around again today. I'm guessing frost will be unwrapping xmas gifts in lincoln.

Amother terrible crowd at the UCF game today isn't going to help. What is really going to hurt is when a 9-0 UCF is ranked anywhere from 16th-18th in the college football playoff with multiple 2 loss teams in front of them.

Well, we all know the CFP formula figures in attendance . I wonder of Muschamp had been kept.......just wondering, for a friend.

I'll be looking for the UAB , before kick pics on #EmptySeats

No UCF will be somewhere between 16-18 regardless of the poor attendance at UCF. Frost won't be at UCF much longer because they aren't in a power 5 conference and they aren't getting into one anytime soon. However your poor attendance for a 9-0 team certainly hinders your chances of ever getting into a better conference. I live in Orlando and unfortunately it's pretty sad how poorly the UCF football team is supported.

FSU and UF benefit from being located in small, boring cities.

It's going to be difficult for schools, that don't already have older, well-established football fanbases, to get them going. FSU, Miami, and UF had the benefit of breaking through before the era of free, instant porn, immersive video games, on-demand movies, music, television, and various other forms of entertainment, that weren't as easily accessible a generation ago.

UCF could win five national championships and still have trouble breaking 50,000 attendance.

Just ask Miami.

The Tom Osborne teams, which I grew up a fan of, recruited heavily in Florida and California. That’s going to be tough to duplicate.

Dude, I like you. And you are a quality poster, but WTF? How can any UF fan ‘like’ anything to do
With Osborne?

I am a lifelong die-hard and on my list of people I would like to see hit by a train, Osborne and Tommy Frazier are probably only second to my ex-wife

Most of College football has attendance issues, not just UCF.

Yes, I agree, the situation at UCF is especially compelling due to being 9-0. They have a ( attending) core fan base of probably 35K, 25 on rainy days. They need some bandwagon fans, we'll see if they jump on board.

I'll continue to go. I have to, my wife forces me to leave my garage/lawn/puppies 8-11 weekends per year.

Have a great Sunday.

Though a lifelong Gator, I'm a UCF fan. Our son graduated from there in 2006 and still lives in the area. With the location, academics and recruiting base, UCF could, over time, get on equal footing with UF, FSU & Miami if it could ever get into a Power 5 conference. Same with USF. And I think that eventually will happen when more realignments come down the road. They were really, really good during the Blake Bortles years and I think the team that beat Baylor in the Fiesta Bowl is probably better than this year's team. But both teams were fun to watch. I'd love to see them run the table and match up against a Top 10 program to see what kind of scheme Frost puts together.

Well like I said, it was mostly geographic. Growing up in Colorado it was all about big 8 football in the ‘80s. NU and OU were in the top 5 preseason just about every year and their game generally determined half the national championship game.

When I moved to Florida and saw what Gator football (and basketball) was all about, I moved on.

As far as Osborne, he did absolutely destroy Peyton Manning in his last game at the Orange Bowl. I was at the game, and Ahman Green (and Scott Frost!) absolutely bulldozed them. I was sitting behind three drunk Cooters who were literally in tears about NU running up the score in ‘ol Peyton’s last game, so that was a positive contribution from Dr. Tom.

I've been hearing "UCF/USF will soon overtake UF/FSU because they are in a better location" for at least 20 years. I used to agree with it, but now I have a better understanding of politics in Higher Education. If anything, being located in a big city hurts them because it tends to encourage commuter school atmospheres with low graduation rates. Places like Miami, UCLA and USC are in, or near, big cities, but they were already well-established in another era. Also, the Florida legislature is dominated by Gators and Noles. It would be nice to believe that everyone would be above petty turf wars in higher education, but human nature is what it is.

I don't think it's impossible for UCF or USF to get into a P5. I know USF got into the Big East, back when that meant something. It could happen.

But the popular wisdom that all of the conferences desperately want to have a footprint in Florida for recruiting is a bit overblown. Other states, like Texas, are at least as hot as Florida, and you don't hear conference chairmen lusting over Texas Tech, which is a program that is roughly at the stature to which UCF, or USF, can realistically aspire.

That will never happen, they don't have enough fan support and highly unlikely to improve much.UCF is undefeated and everybody is raising hell because they can't get over 25,000 in the stadium.USF is even worse. This is one of the reasons Frost will leave there,he`s not to happy about attendance for games.

It’s amusing to me how some of you get angry when someone suggests a coach you don’t want.

Just a reminder, Stricklin doesn’t give a shit what “Inside the Gators”posters think.

If I say I want David Nabavi to be our new receivers coach, relax....it doesn’t mean it will happen.

I’m sure we will make a good hire for the new head coach.

Now that really pisses me off,I thought Stricklin was giving me likes on my recommendations.

But we were also told Stricklin didn't give a shit we wanted Mac fired due to him having consecutive East Division Championships.

They all will adjust whatever they say in public, to suit themselves and to advance their own individual agendas.... Well, DuH!

JMOHO of course, but the main reason that so few of the above 5 groups ever volunteer to serve their country and fellow citizens in the U.S. Military, is that they could never get past the 'HONOR' system way of doing things...

I don’t know what this means.

Just a reply to "Stricklin doesn’t give a shit what “Inside the Gators”posters think." I think Mac getting canned like he did showed Stricklin must take the fans into account a little bit. I know not on a specific hire but that make things fun again comment means he will be going after real proven offense with the hire.

it's weird to think even the latter part of your post was a long time ago..

Iv'e been a Gator fan a really long ass time for someone that's not very old

I’m not sure Stricklin makes decisions based on what “Gator Fever” posts on this this site, specifically.

lol great points and add to that Music Festivals(EDC Orlando last weekend) and Orlando City Soccer being popular with current students/millenials

One consolation for UCF fans is that the college football audience is aging. The average age for a CFB fan is 52. We're a bunch of old farts. I would not be surprised if 20-30 years from now, college football is either non-existent, or far less relevant. UCF should should corner the League of Legends market while the field is wide open. They could be the Notre Dame of eSports.

You'd be an ok poster if it wasn't for the snide remarks.

Look guy it's like this, Frost isn't going to be at UCF for a real long time. He just won't. Rather it's UF, Nebraska, Tennessee, wherever his time in Orlando is limited.

And what the fvck are you, your friend, or the mouse in your pocket wondering about Muschamp? He sucked and he always will suck. The time when both Florida and Tennessee are down...and even Missouri...the best that bastard can do is 3rd in the east. He even let Kentucky feel like they are an average team.

Sure you will see empty seats at the UAB game. Bet it would still be 50,000 plus. Imagine that, 50,000 with a 3-6 record while UCF struggles to get 25,000 while sitting at 9-0. Now what other snide remarks you want to spew?

I live just outside Memphis and hear all the time that attendence can't hit the 45,000 mark all the time due to a fall gig with music called the Cooper Young Festival being the same day as game day..plus the Grizz basketball season starting up... etc.

Thanks for bringing up video games and instant porn. Kids these days will never understand the struggles of leaving Techmo Bowl on pause because you have Bo Jackson rushing for 400 yards and have to go to school. Better yet, fast forwarding the VHS to get to the Jeanna Fine scene. Those days...those days!

I don't know how you could get Bo Jackson to 400 yards, since he shared carries with Marcus Allen. Also, how do you know he had 400 yards? It didn't keep stats.

I always preferred being the Giants, because they had a good defense and were the only team that could block kicks.

Us true video gamers kept manuel stats(similar to fantasy baseball vs this computerized modern Fantasy Football). Marcus Allen could still rack up 100 yards when Bo got tired. Both consistently made the Pro Bowl on my system) .To keep defenses honest you could throw bombs to Willie Gault.

I myself preferred the Eagles with Randall Cunningham. I was 30 years ahead of the times running a spread type offense with a DT/QB. Plus I could sack any QB with the Eagles NG who now stars on an early morning ESPN talk show.

But yeah Simms threw the best Techmo pass and LT could run down anyone...Bo included.

LT was such a beast in that game. It didn't matter if you ran around or at the blocker you were getting to the ball carrier no matter who it was, QB or RB.

You nitwits quit talking about video games and get back to posting coaching rumors! We need razor focus right now if we are going to land a good coach!
