Official Coaching Change Thread

Steve Spurrier supports Will Muschamp's bid to be his South Carolina replacement

Steve Spurrier, the former Florida head coach and now-resigned South Carolina head coach, supports the idea of fellow former Gators head coach Will Muschamp taking over the Gamecocks, according to multiple sources.

Spurrier has recommended Muschamp to South Carolina athletic director Ray Tanner and has assisted Muschamp's efforts to contact coaches affiliated with the Gamecock program, as well as key boosters, according to one source.

Thank you Steve!

South Carolina: Reading the tea leaves on this one; but fact that Will Muschamp hasn’t been announced yet leads one to believe this is Rich Rod’s job. Thinking Rich might be headed back to Arizona to let his squad know in person tomorrow. Will update when more is known; but feels like this will be leaked / announced tomorrow after Rich has had a chance to speak with his team.

I was wondering why someone would leave Arizona to go to USCe, but then I saw Rich Rod's salary. USCe could easily double what he's making at Arizona.

Because he's not a moron, that's a dead end job no matter how much idiots like Finebaum try to hype it up. SEC bro! They're an afterthought in their state and have no real recruiting grounds. No smart coach is gonna go there. It took two hall-of-fame coaches just to make them mediocre.

SI reporting it is basically done

Auburn defensive coordinator Will Muschamp has agreed in principle to beSouth Carolina’s new head coach, according to a source. According to the source, the deal is "all but done."

As South Carolina’s coaching search heats up, at least one candidate thinks he has a very good shot at landing the job.

Will Muschamp offered former star running back Marcus Lattimore a job on his future staff at USC on Thursday, according to sources close to Lattimore. The capacity of the position wasn’t defined, and Lattimore is still weighing the offer, but Muschamp apparently wants Lattimore around.

Muschamp also told Lattimore that he has been in contact with USC President Harris Pastides. The source said that Pastides implied to Muschamp that “they’re going to try to get this thing done as soon as possible.”

Muschamp would return to a head-coaching role after 1 season coaching Auburn’s defense. Under Muschamp, the Tigers improved their yards allowed per play from 5.7 to 5.5 and held opponents to 21 points or fewer 5 times but went a disappointing 6–6 this season.[#]
Uh, huh. That means "defensive genius" Mousefield allowed Auburn's opponents to score 22 points or more 7 times in the regular season!

On how many opponents should the powers-that-be at USC expect the Gamecocks be able to score 22 points or more with Mr. Mousefield as head coach? Especially
  • if he's failed to learn the crucial lessons about not meddling with coaches responsible for his offense, and not neglecting their needs in recruiting; and
  • newly tied to a home-state (S.C.) that's only 17th in producing college-football recruits (2008--2013), instead of 2nd (Fla.)[##]; and
  • must compete for home-state recruits not only vs. Clemzin, but also vs. interlopers from U.Ga. If USC and Clemzin were restricted to signing home-state recruits, the total FBS signees in S.C. are barely enough to provide the rosters of total scholarship players for both schools[###].

Note ###: Only 49 FBS recruits from S.C. in 2015, so, oversimplifying: 49 times 4 years = 196, minus 2 teams of 85 scholarships = 170, excess = 26 players for other teams.

Word on the street is UGA is hiring UK's offensive coordinator to the same position and Patrick Towles will play his 5th year at Georgia.

Looks like FSU's DC is going to replace Chump at AU. How many DCs can FSU lose to the same position in the SEC?

I can speak only for myself when I say. I will not be sad if CK goes or stays.

Auburn is a lateral move from FSU -- except for the money. SEC schools have to pay a premium now because they have a reputation for running coaches out of town so quickly.

Despite taking Auburn to a National Championship game 2 years ago, Gus could be out of a job before next season is over, along with his staff. There is little chance that Fisher will be out of a job any time soon. FSU is not nearly as quick to fire coaches.

Lateral move? Click your heels three times and repeat that to your self Dorthy. And another way of talking about pay is that SEC programs can afford to pay a premium, regardless of the reason. FSU? Not so much.

Somewhere, Rick Trickett, Jeff and Bobby Bowden are all smiling.

Jeremy Pruitt's time at Georgia is over.

A source confirmed to The Telegraph that Pruitt will become Alabama's next defensive coordinator. Pruitt spent the past two seasons as Georgia's defensive coordinator and improved the unit from where it was during his time in Athens.

Pruitt's group ranked No. 8 in total defense this season at 298 yards per game. The website BamaOnline.com was the first to report the news.

After Georgia's 13-7 win over Georgia Tech, Pruitt said he hoped to remain with the Bulldogs.

"I want to be at Georgia and I think our whole staff wants to be at Georgia, so I hope that’s clarity enough," Pruitt said.

Pruitt told Georgia's defensive players he was leaving during a meeting Thursday. According to the same source, Pruitt told players he wanted to stay on at Georgia but that he was not being retained on new head coach Kirby Smart's staff...

FSU spends plenty. I believe our assistants are paid 7th most in the nation. LSU and Auburn are run by idiots who overspend for crap results then fire everyone and start over every few years.
