Yea... not even close. Golden was the worset Canes coach in over 50 years.
Excellent wording: "
not even close". Limiting our review to the more-or-less 1/2 century you chose, Golden is only the
7th worst Canes coach. You oughtta keep in mind that when you pluck
numbers outta, um,
thin air, there are readers here who'll recognize right away when you've leapt into unfamiliar waters waaay over your head.
Are you unaware that it was
less than 40 years ago: 1978 or 1979, that U. Miami was
sooo bad that it was
seriously considering deëmphasizing or
disbanding its Div. I-A football program? Considering the low undergrad enrollment at its U., maybe Div. I-AA would've made better financial sense. Instead, as a last gasp, they hired the available and conveniently located Howard Schnellenberger (1979--1983).
Canes coaches "
in over 50 years", by winning percentage at
U. Miami, from worst to only 7th worst (the number after the '/' being the total number of games):
#1 1975--1976 (Indep.):
Carl Selmer: 5--16--0/21 =
23.8%
#2(tie) 1977--1978 (Indep.):
Lou Saban: 9--13--0/22 = 40.9%
#2(tie) 1971--1972 (Indep.): Fran Curci: 9--13--0/22 = 40.9%
#4 1973--1974 (Indep.): Pete Elliott: 11--11--0/22 = 50.0%
#5 1964--1970[#] (Indep.): Charlie Tate: 36--34--3/73 = 51.4%
#6 2007--2010 (ACC): Randy Shannon: 28--23--0/51 = 54.9%
#7 2011--2015 (ACC):
Al Golden: 32--25--0/57 =
56.1%

Note #: I included Tate's 1st & 2nd years as head football coach at U. Miami above, because doing so stretches the arbitrary period discussed to only 52 years (i.e.: by +4%), and omitting the overall-even 9--9--2 record of his 1st & 2nd years to fit the period makes no difference to his ranking (27--25--1/53 = 51.9%: still #5).
