Johnson Jr. claims another preseason accolade as he enters the 2024 season as one of the most productive returning players in the SEC.
GAINESVILLE, Fla.: The PwC SMU Athletic Forum released the preseason candidates for the 2024 Doak Walker Award today, including Florida senior playmaker Montrell Johnson Jr. The Forum annually presents the award to the nation’s most outstanding college running back.
Johnson Jr. enters his senior season after starting 11 games in 2023 and leading the Gators in rushing each of the last two seasons. His 817 rushing yards was good for 10th in the conference last season, and the Louisiana native is one of just two players in last season's top-10 that will be returning to the conference next season.
Johnson was second among SEC running backs in receiving yards in the 2023 season. He has recorded six 100-yard rushing games as a Gator and enters this season with 2,496 career rushing yards, with three consecutive seasons of 800 yards or more.
The PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will name ten semifinalists in November, and three finalists, as voted on by the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee, made up of of past recipients, former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs, media members and selected special representatives, will also be announced in November. The committee will cast a second vote in December to determine the recipient. The recipient of the 2024 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards on December 12, 2024.
