Grier

Now, let's hope that Treon does not go and smoke a doobie to celebrate his first start this year.

Lots of things are legal to do and take that the NCAA bans. Like selling jerseys and signatures. In addition to Ligandrol.
Will had to know it was against NCAA rules. And given what happened to Treon, he had to know that at some point, he would be tested.

Not his brightest moment.
He made a mistake by not asking the trainers or medical staff. I am sure the strengthening and conditioner coach would know it was off limits but don't necessarily think a 19 year old kid would know to be cautious................particularly something you just grab off the shelf at any vitamin/supplement store. For crying out loud, creatin has been out there forever, is it banned too?

That particular supplement has been widely known to be a banned substance for some time, if I am not mistaken. As such, the training staff should have warned everyone against taking it..

If not, shame on them. If so, shame on Will.

Yea it really is ridiculous that you can get suspended for taking something OTC. I highly, highly doubt he even knew it was illegal. What I find ridiculous are all the people rushing to label him a 'cheater' while they're up on their high horse, GTFO. Makes me sick.
Don't disagree BUT

He attends a school that is home to a top notch medical school. This school also has a top notch training staff. They have employees of this staff who's main job is to supply substances and medications that are not on the NCAA banned lists. He had plenty of free medical options to take.

Cheater? Hell no. Dumb mistake? Yes

I'm pushing 60 and never heard of it, and I've known my way around a gym most of my life. I can see how he would screw up. If I walked into a health store and told them I wanted something to put some weight on and they grab a jar off the shelf, I wouldn't give it a second thought. Now if he motioned me around to the coatroom and brought out a little vial and syringe, that's an entirely different matter. With all of the things going on in a student athlete's life, time for lectures on legal medications might not be a big focus.

You are a former player. Was your team warned of legal substances that the NCAA banned?

i don't think you are mistaken at all. In fact, I think it is SOP at this level of college football to educate the players on the ramifications, procedures, etc of taking any type of OTC, prescription vitamin or drug. I know UF must be included in that protocol as well or would be shocked if they are not.
It is pretty standard operating procedure to educate the football team on showing the training staff every OTC/prescription drug, prescription, vitamin, etc prior to ingesting. Those that are around college football programs know this is discussed at orientation plus ongoing info sessions. The tests conducted by the NCAA are random and no one knows who will get pinched until they show up and select who they are going to select. Most would think a QB, punter, kicker, would be one of the last ones to take any type of banned substance, however all should know to at least run what they want to take by their medical staff prior to ingesting. Ignorance is going to be a difficult defense, imo.

Dude, this is not new. Monte Grow, back in the mid-90s, had the same problem.

If I read correctly, it is considered a SRAM which was just added to the list this past year. Maybe he checked before he started taking it over the summer before it was banned and didnt check since?

News services are reporting that the university is going to appeal. If the university is backing the appeal, they must think there are sufficient grounds to do so. Is this going to be another one of those one game suspensions like Treon had last year to clear up jumping the gun on an accusation?

They claim that is some strong stuff on some bodybuilding forum threads. Some stuff once the liver processes and changes it is really strong.

Monte Grow appealed and got his suspension reduced. By a lot, I seem to remember. Maybe that is where Grier is hoping this will end up.

Yes. But it was usually like once a year, and mainly during the offseason when lifting was the major focus. And I really don't remember any of us clearing anything with trainers or whatever. May have been negligent, but that's how it was. I remember going into GNC and buying hydroxycut when it was big and creatine too. Just read up on it, though it could help for my goals, and went and bought it.

This is a total game changer (in a good way), if true.

I went back and listened to the presser. Will stated that he took an OTC supplement. He did not use the word medical as has been reported on other sites. My bad on the earlier post. Guess that goes to show that we all need to sit back and wait for the report on exactly what was taken but with the university appealing I have to think that it wasn't something bad.

Will was torn up but he was a man and owned up to screwing up. You don't see many young athletes doing that today. I feel bad for him and I hope that UF wins the appeal.

Well, I think it sucks for them to release this information on such an important day.

Happy Birthday, Evil.

It is not known as a supplement to help with flu symptoms, I do not think.

The timeline for the NCAA running the tests (they've been referenced in a couple of linked articles) would seem to contradict the "flu treatment" that is being presented by some. Those articles indicate that the testing process is - take a piss sample, split it in half. Run the test on one of the samples, which takes two weeks. If test is negative, you're clear. If test is positive, re-run the test on the B sample. I'd assume that would take another 2 weeks, though they might put a rush on the B test. Either way, it wouldn't fit the timeline of him being tested after having battled the flu (and taken something to help get over that) right before the Ole Miss game.

Now they are reporting it wasn't Ligandrol but they wont release what it was until they have WG consent

Ligandrol is NOT a banned substance per UF:

I don't think it was Ligandrol. They won't release what it was without Grier's consent.

I would like to see Grier's Scholarship Contract. Is there a NCAA Football Contract each player signs?

Lots of conflicting reports out there

That's the way all this stuff starts...and many times it really just stays muddy. I'm thinking UF and the NCAA will NOT disclose what the substance was.

In the NFL banned substance violations, the league and teams are prohibited from disclosing what was in a player's test sample. In some cases, the player, typically through his agent, announce on their own what they claim they were taking and the circumstances they took it. Because the league and teams couldn't discuss it, the player had an unchallenged version of events for the public. There was talk of giving the NFL the ability to correct a player's inaccurate version...but I don't know if that went through.

I suspect Will is done speaking about this problem in public.

I understand the punishment handed to him, I just really hope they can get the punishment reduced to at most the rest of the season. I wonder if they would take into consideration what supplement he was taking, how much was in his system, and give him a chance to explain why he was taking it. He made a stupid mistake, but banning him for such a long time is pretty ridiculous. Even suspending him for the rest of the season is pretty extreme. I really hope this works out for him, it sucks it happened when it did especially with the season we are having. I hope the appeal comes through fast enough and he can be back for some part of this season, or at least for the beginning of next season. I wonder if its reasonable to think that with UF appealing the length of suspension and with us having a bye week next weekend, if he could possibly be back in time for the Georgia game?

And, am I the only one thinking that he was probably being an idiot and bought some "performance" enhancing pills that they sell everywhere? I always hear those things are filled with a ton of shit that never gets checked.

sounds like uf is appealing the first 6 games of next year. He is done for 2015, no appeal for that

Grier is definitely done for the 2015 season. The appeal is to get him eligible for the 2016 season.

I think Outside the Lines did a show on this a year or two ago, where the supplement maker will leave certain ingredients of off the list of ingredients, and this is where some pro athletes claim to have been tripped up. The players association has a list of what they "can and should" take, a list of products proven to be safe, to go along with a list of products that they should be staying away from. I am sure the NCAA and individual teams have a similar list, but if this were to be a new product, it might not appear on any of these "safe" or "unsafe" lists yet.

Again, I believe that a high percent of NCAA football players, and athletes in general are taking something that is banned by the NCAA, so it is very strange to me that a QB gets popped, and not a DL who goes from 225 to 285 in a year.
