Gators to Hire Ron Roberts as LB Coach, Co-Defensive Coordinator ?

Florida Gators to host a couple of On300 prospects on Saturday

The Florida Gators play host to a five-star defensive lineman, four-star tight end and three-star offensive tackle on Saturday.

This weekend a good one for recruiting - but entire month of June should be filled with visits from Talented Players.

With all the work CBN & Staff are doing; IMO, by the end of June, we will know most of this year's (2024) recruiting class.

Sounds like the local portal WR Quan Lee from UCF is visiting in some capacity also. I doubt he could beat out the young WRs we have now but I think I heard he was really fast so maybe could be a bonus to special teams etc.

More Thoughts on Next Season
Is Florida in Better Shape in Billy Napier's Second Year?
Second-year coach Billy Napier didn't inherit an overnight fix in Gainesville. Last year's 6-7 mark certainly didn't sit well, but Florida's roster is still in a state of transition going into '23. In other words: It could get worse before it gets better.

Provided the line is able to jell with standout guard O'Cyrus Torrence now in the NFL, the Gators should be able to test defenses with a solid stable of running backs that includes Montrell Johnson Jr. and Trevor Etienne. However, question marks remain about the passing attack and how much (or how little) Napier can get out of Wisconsin transfer Graham Mertz at quarterback.

On the positive side for Napier, the defense appears to be trending in the right direction.
Additionally, a handful of transfers from the portal should add needed depth to this unit.

Portal players who knows; HS recruits, even with early entry, still at least a year away from major contributions.

Given the offensive limitations, along with a schedule that features Florida State and Utah in non-conference play, just getting to a bowl would be a good second year for Napier.

Unfortunately, IMO, the DraftKings' 5.5 win total prediction that Fever posted is realistic.

Who Knows - the Horse may learn to sing & Mertz may be able to play QB in the SEC.

Auburn signed Michigan State's QB who isnt too bad and TJ Finley is in the portal as a grad transfer now but I wouldnt touch him as he just doesnt have it with the mental part of the game. Depending on the portal additions Auburn got they might can avoid a losing season with that QB who is decent.

Fever,

Know nothing about him, but if he has speed, he could help. Pearsall bound to need a breather every so often,
OR
perhaps we could dare to be innovative & play TWO speedy WRs at the same time.

Just think - a 4 WR set & we hand the ball off to the RB or pass it to him or the TE.

LOL

SOS's Fun 'N Gun never did it like that.

Hard to see anything outside of 5-7 to 7-5. If Napier pulled an 8-4 season it would be something.

Gators secure official visit from 2024 4 Star Edge / WDE - (5* per TOS)

NOTE
This is a Rivals Board provided free by Owner/Publisher Jason Higdon - try finding a Free Board on WarChant or most of the other Rivals sites !
Thank You Jason

Therefor, for consistency, I use Rival's rating in my posts.

Florida has secured an official visit from Jordan Ross, an EDGE out of Birmingham, Alabama.

TOS has Ross ranked as the 12th-best player in the country, the 2nd-best EDGE in the class of ’24, and the best player coming out of Alabama.

Jordan Ross announced the top schools left in his recruitment on Wednesday night. Texas made the cut alongside Georgia, Alabama, Florida, USC, Oregon, LSU and Tennessee.

EDIT
FWIW, I agree with this opinion -
"... But Billy Napier should feel good about getting Ross on campus for an OV because over the past few years, guys with the pedigree like Jordan wouldn’t make a stop in Gainesville.- especially if they come from alabama !

As SOS said - “In 12 years at Florida, I don’t think we ever signed a kid from the state of Alabama … Of course, we found out later that the scholarships they were giving out at Alabama were worth a whole lot more than ours.”

Maybe they’d come to check it out for a weekend or catch a game, but never for an official visit.

Getting Ross on board shows that recruits are starting to see UF as a legit presence on the trail again, despite on-the-field performance.

If Napier is going to be able to rebuild the Gators, successes on the trail are a must. And it seems like we’re headed in that direction."

Once we start winning again, CBN & staff will be solid in recruiting.
If we also get our NIL$$$ program sorted out; the rest of the SEC - including the DAWGS - better look out !

Surprised OSU picked up that many with their recruiting. Curious if most are just depth pieces.

Kiffin seems to think getting a few good high school recruits and getting a lot of starters from the portal is Ole Miss best strategy. It might be considering how the top of the SEC recruits.

Gators Kicking A**S in June Recruiting

Florida football continues to rack up the official visit dates for the month of June, including the latest one from four-star offensive tackle Fletcher Westphal out of Leesburg (Virginia) Tuscarora. The 6-foot-7.5-inch, 305-pound behemoth recently told Swamp247’s Blake Alderman he plans on swinging by campus on the weekend of June 16 — joining a slew of other prospects for a mid-month visit.

The OV will be the third stop in Gainesville for the coveted high school junior, who was in town for the win over the South Carolina Gamecocks last fall as well as for a spring practice back in early March. Offensive line coordinator Rob Sale and assistant coach Darnell Stapleton have spearheaded the efforts to get the lineman into an Orange and Blue uniform.

Please Help Our Dawg Brothers in Athens !

To help economize on recruiting - a must when you only have
$2.5 MM / year - right before NIL$$$ came into being - the Dawgs bought a Truck Load of McDonalds' Bags - custom printed in Red & Black to help their recruits remember who was "assisting" them with their educational financing.

Now, with NIL$$$, they no longer need these attractive, custom printed, Dawggy bags & are looking for a way to recycle / repurpose them.

Fever,

Auburn & Missouri have weaker OOC schedules. Neither one of them starts - on the road - with Utah - the two time PAC12 conference champ & Cameron Rising - their returning QB1.

The only easy day for gator Football was yesterday.

Utah QB Cam Rising ahead of schedule for ACL rehab, Whittingham says
Utes coach Kyle Whittingham says the quarterback is on track to be ready for season opener vs. Florida.

https://www.sltrib.com/sports/utah-utes/2023/04/29/utah-qb-cam-rising-ahead-schedule/

Neither one of them plays the SOW with Jordan Travis as returning QB1 - the QB we couldn't lay a hand on the entire game.

Top FSU returning players - Along with QB Jordan Travis, running back Trey Benson and receiver Johnny Wilson, as well as defensive stars Jared Verse, Fabien Lovett and Fentrell Cypress III are other key players for the Seminoles entering year four under head coach Mike Norvell.

FSU opens the season against LSU on Sept. 3 at Camping World Stadium in Orlando. - Give Noles some credit - another 1st class OOC opponent for game 1.

Hey Numbers, a little help with this Nole write up !
How did Travis do in the Garnet & Gold Spring game ?
Agree with it all - but we're also not a very good team...so there's that.

GBO,

Forced to agree with you; don't think we will be much better till 2024.
Won't be just poor QB play either; not sure our OL or Defense will be much improved till end of the season, if at all.
Not thrilled with relearning - "Wait Till Next Year", but this too shall pass.
Convinced that CBN, given time & resources will be successful.

Just a general FYI -- Keeping in mind the much smaller number of D1 quality HS recruits in AL compared to FL/GA, and the fact that UA & AU are going to usually get 1st choice on them.

Gators recruited from Alabama and already on the 2017 Roster:
Kadarius Toney - Lamical Perine - Jeawon Taylor - Jeremiah Moon - C''yontai Lewis

2018 Recruit Class: Malik Langham - Evan McPherson

2019 Recruit Class: Mohamoud Diabate - Jaydon Hill

2020 Recruit Class: NADA

2021 Recruit Class: Jeremiah Williams

2022 Recruit Class: Shemar James - Miguel Mitchell

2023 Recruit Class: Kelby Collins - Mich xfer Deuce Spurlock

2024 Recruit Class: None Yet....

What to do when your 2 projected starters at QB are both mediocre?
(and you don't spend the needed time with the one QB-dt on the roster)

https://www.si.com/college/florida/...sfer-portal-rb-alton-mccaskill-official-visit

Summing up Billy's 1st year as the Gator's football HC:

UF 33 - 38 Tennis-sea
UF 20 - 42 UGly
UF 38 - 45 FSUcks
UF 3 - 30 OreSt - Bowl
Triple Losers @ 6-7 & 3-4 SEC, Bowl 0-1

But hey, maybe he builds a winning team eventually....

Insta,

Great pickup on McCaskill, many thanks !

Insta I know how you & Fever love to watch player film & analyze it. Hoping the two of you enjoy this Hudl tape.

If things go well on his OV; we are down to 3 open scholarships.

OT & speed WR & anything else CBN wants (TE with 2 good hands ?) sounds good to me !

Also, appreciate your civility & courtesy when describing our Gator QBs.
LOL

When you are going to be a run heavy offense, best to have plenty of really good running backs.

Insta this from your article -

Considered the No. 27 running back recruit in the class of 2021, McCaskill signed with Houston over offers from the likes of Alabama, Ole Miss, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida State and 26 other programs.

He earned 2021 AAC Rookie of the Year honors for producing 961 yards and 16 touchdowns across 189 rushing attempts, averaging 5.1 yards per carry, and adding 21 receptions for 113 yards and two scores in 2021.

He missed the 2022 season due to a torn ACL suffered in spring training camp, but was available and participated in Houston's set of spring practices this offseason before departing from the team.

As a result of the injury, McCaskill maintains three seasons of eligibility to utilize at his next stop, despite originally avoiding a redshirt as a freshman.

Article (listed below) talked about Alton was headed to Colorado & Neon Deion, but with him taking an OV here, may have decided to think about things.
Colorado has already added 40 players through the transfer portal; wonder how many more they can take.

"... Taller, big-framed back with longer stride that builds speed. Home run-hitting ability derived from track-verified speed. Ran 10.91 100 as a junior. Speed manifests on the field. Shows good straight-line burst and acceleration with resulting long speed. Among the fastest backs in TXHSFB's 2021 class.

Limited pass-catching opportunities but impressive in small sample size. Upright runner who can improve pad level to maximize run-finishing ability and contact balance. Production gradually improved from sophomore to junior to senior seasons, but relatively minimally. Cna make first defender miss in the hole, but also can improve suddenness in redirection. Slasher who's dangerous with downhill speed and one-cut ability. Projects to high-major level with tools to develop into long-term NFL Draft prospect."

Numbers,

For 2023, baring injury to current roster players, you're probably right.
BUT
Torn ACL last year. How bad was the tear? How "healed" is his injury ?
Montrell Johnson is a JR & with a good year, could head for the NFL.
Alton McCaskill has 3 years left but as you say, he may go elsewhere.
We are not an NIL$$$ powerhouse, so that won't be the reason he might consider coming here.

IMO, CBN & staff are personable & professional. He may have just felt comfortable taking one of his 1st OVs here to get a feel for the new environment brought about by NIL$$$ & to establish a metric to evaluate subsequent offers. May also want to get a feel for an SEC / Power 5 Program.

He's from Texas; maybe he's met QB DJ Lagway & Laqway worked his magic on him & got him to take an OV.

No. 1 WR Jeremiah Smith locks in Florida Gators official visit

The Gators have secured an official visit date (June) from the No. 1 wide receiver in the 2024 class.

He's from CHAMINADE MADONNA | HOLLYWOOD, FL & Still listed as a verbal to tOSU,
BUT
perhaps CBN & Billy G are working some magic.
Maybe he's met QB DJ Lagway & he's the one working the magic.

Guessing Lagway committing to UF has some bearing on Smith checking us out.

You have to go back to Carlos Alvarez - before his knee injury - to imagine a Gator WR of comparable skill.

In-state OT target stopped by the Swamp on Saturday

The Florida Gators are hosting a group of recruits on visits this weekend, and in-state offensive tackle Tye Hylton is one of the confirmed names in Gainesville this Saturday, according to Gators Online.

Hylton plays high school ball in Oviedo, which is just outside the Orlando area, so he’s certainly within the radius that Billy Napier and his recruiting staff like to operate within.

He’s been by campus twice already this spring, most recently stopping by the Swamp for the Orange and Blue Game in April. He brought his parents along for that visit and got a chance to connect with the coaching staff a bit better, which seems to have paid off considering the quick return.

It looks like Florida and Florida State are the two schools at the top of this recruiting race, and Miami is also in the mix.

Florida Gators in top two for 4* TE Walter Matthews

Matthews Hudl Tape

Official visits are coming up, and the hope is that both sides can figure out the right date to get him back in Gainesville for an extended stay.

The On3 recruiting prediction machine favors Florida but only gives the Gators 17.4% odds to land Matthews. Ohio State is close behind with 15.2% odds and Michigan (13.0%) and USC (10.9%) also trail closely.

Matthews is a consensus four-star talent, according to the four major recruiting services. He’s ranked as high as 87th overall in the class of 2024 by 247Sports and is No. 105 on the On3 industry ranking, which uses a weighted average of all four services.

McCaskill is really good. Not sure why he would come here with our loaded RB room but I would take him in a heartbeat. Hoard talent and sort it out later if you can.

Anyone think Lagway could possibly back out if Simmons is on campus this Summer?

I haven't really followed this but isn't Simmons 2025? Why would he reclassify early? Isn't he 16 or 17? Or did he get held back?

17 I think now. From what some people are saying he has the education part already done to come here for camp for 2023. I think he home schooled but was taking advanced classes. When asked about Lagway he basically just said he wants the competition and to have to earn the job. He should be here anywhere from this coming camp to Spring 24. It would give him a head start on Lagway to come here for 2023.

Paco,

With NIL$$$ being what it is, I doubt that the Gators, or anyone else, will get to having 5*s backing up 5*s.

Don't think the Bamas & UGAs will be able to maintain that level of talent either. Saban getting older & he is backing off somewhat; honestly think he is looking to step down soon.

Realize that some talking heads are calling for a UGA three-peat; but that hasn't happened yet & I don't think it will.
UGA will be successful on both the SEC & National level for some time to come, but think UGA has hit their zenith.
Bama, TAMU, & LSU will continue to recruit well & Tenn & UF will get much better; Kirby's stockpile of talent will remain good; but he will not see 5 NFL 1st round picks again.

I'm sure Saban would love to get one more title & then step down; but I think he is into Bobbie Bowden land & I'm don't think that will happen.

Kirby & UGA have eased him out of the SEC's top slot. Bama still better than us, but CBN gaining momentum.

I believe that if we accept a difficult year this year & keep CBN here & give him the resources he needs, he will recruit strongly enough to overcome our deficiencies & get us back on a more even basis with UGA & the rest of the SEC.

We won't win the SEC Title every year, - no one will, but we will be competitive & make the new 12 team CFP on a regular basis.

Fever,

I read some of the same stuff & Paco dropped a comment in one of his posts which I interpreted to mean Simmons might reclassify & come early.

Its been years since SOS was the Head Ball Coach & I'm not used to having an embarrassment of riches at QB.

Might not make any difference, but I can hope that a year's separation might reduce the tendency to transfer if he don't end up as QB1.

I hope Lagway looks at things like Simmons and doesnt care who else signs. It would be likely 1 of the 2 at least turns out to be good for the 2025 season. Who knows maybe if Simmons comes prior to Spring 2024 he may be able to handle being a starting QB in 2024.

Sorry, but no one should fear f$u. And we paid plenty of hands on travis, and he kept escaping not because he’s so great, but bc inevitably there would be 1-2 guys out of position that should have bottled him up for a loss and let him escape for a big gain on a play that we had beaten with the call. It looks like the defense might be a little mor disciplined this year, so hopefully that will stop. And I refuse to give them any credit for adding a game to their 2 game schedule. As with any nole success, they got lucky that LSU played the worst game they’ve played in decades against them last year (it was actually the worst game I saw two teams play all year. ) I’d put my money on Kelly having LSU ready to play more than norvell and his “all portal” team. If mullen taught us anything, it’s that the portal is not the way to build your program. It’s all smoke and mirrors. After the LSU fluke, their biggest win was against us. And they think they have a shot at the playoffs? They aren’t worthy of fear or respect. Nothing personal, Jeff. They just shouldn’t be one of two teams we play that you mention. They’re basically vandy playing in a weak conference. Vandy could have won 10 games last year, and probably many years, with f$u’s weak a$$ schedule. So they just aren’t worthy of being mentioned as a “tough opponent”… we have a few of those on our schedule. They have two. And they’ll probably lose both.

QB D J Lagway's Connection to WR Jeremiah Smith

In my 1st post about WR Jeremiah Smith taking an OV to Gators, I mentioned that there must be a connection between D J Lagway & Jeremiah Smith.

From Benjamin Henderson of FanSided - Here it is -

"...If you follow Florida football on Twitter, you know that incoming QB DJ Lagway is very active on the app, trying to convince everyone else in the country to join him in Gainesville. One of the players he has tried very hard to convince is five-star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith out of Chaminade-Madonna Prep.

But there is a catch, Smith is committed to Ohio State and has been equally active in trying to convince people to join him in Columbus.

Yet, for someone that’s been committed to Ohio State since December, Smith keeps finding his way to Gainesville.

And he’s returning again in (CBN's Mega Recruiting Month of) June.

Florida Football: Mr. Smith Goes to Gainesville

Corey Bender of On3 reported on Saturday that Smith had informed him that he would be taking an official visit to Gainesville in June.
This report was then confirmed by 247 Sports, and what makes it even more notable is that his official visit will be the same weekend as Lagway’s."

Still a lot of time before June rolls around, but Lagway & Smith joining forces in Gainesville, makes a GREAT GATOR FANTASY, especially if you have watched Jeremiah's tape from YouTube (link bookmarked in my 1st post).

I'm hoping it comes true !

I think you are maybe underestimating them some. They got good portal additions and TCU showed than can go a long way (5 portal starters I think) in addition to USC coming up a little short for the playoff before the QBs injury when they literally had a portal starting team. Not saying FSU is anywhere near Georgia's level but I doubt LSU goes there and wins some easy game. I expect a close game like last season and wouldnt be real surprised if FSU won again. The ACC overall is easy but winning 2 of 3 out of LSU and Clemson twice (with an LSU win the Clemson win would need to be in the ACCCG) with no other losses probably gets them a playoff spot.

Vandy was 1/10th of the way there after playing you guys LOL

Mullen portal players aren't fsu portal players. We will have 6 to 8 drafted next yr, most or all will be portal players.

I do agree that we shouldn't be looked at as a playoff team, I think we get too much hype there.

Our schedule is more difficult than Georgia's, if we had Georgia's schedule, I'd say we make the playoffs fairly easy. We have faced Brian zkelly to start the yr 2 yrs in a row. Once it went to over time and the other a point t after that would have sent it to overtime got blocked. So in 120 min of non overtime gameplay, Norvell has been 1 pt better. I think both teams will be good this yr and be top 10 to top 15 teams.

Imo we don't have the corners or safeties to beat really good passing teams. Our strength is d line.
