Gators to Hire Ron Roberts as LB Coach, Co-Defensive Coordinator ?

With a torn Achilles Tendon, Waites probably out till the start of the Season or longer - Sucks !

EDIT
“He was doing an agility drill and it just gave out on him,” a source, who wished to remain anonymous, said."

The Gators recently commenced Phase 1 of Napier's annual program on Wednesday. Phase 1 is a roughly two-week portion of personal assessment and evaluation of each individual’s skill-set as it pertains to their on-field role.

That roster depth chart looks like a receipt for yet another 6-7 season to me....

QB - Mertz-Miller-Brown - 2 experienced losers are not better than one inexperienced winner....
Teams greatest need in 2023 is not at getting yet another xfer QB, it's a competent OC/QB's-C....

RB -3 Deep & Solid - Johnson-Etienne-Webb---rsSr's Ricks & Battle, rsFr Joseph & Barnes

WR - Good enough, depending on HC, WR/C, Game Plan, Play Calling, Which QB....

TE - Good/deep enough, depending on HC, TE/C, Game Plan, Play Calling, Which QB....
Zanders rsSr - Zipper Sr - Odom rsJr - Keeter rsJr - causing Elksnis to xfer to SCa was stupid imo....
Boardingham rsFr - Hansen rsFr - Isacks III rsFr - Livingston Fr-22 Grayshirt

OL - Questions will remain right up to the 2nd game of the season, laugh or cry after that, depending....

Good article on Aidan Mizell and his recruitment. I somewhat know the father Wil.

Elite recruits in The Swamp this weekend

https://hailfloridahail.com/2023/01/21/florida-football-elite-recruits/

14 recruits from the 2024 cycle will be on campus this weekend, in addition to four 2025 athletes, and two 2026 prospects.

Napier is working farther out (Class of 2026) than Mullen ever dreamed of !

IMO, the 1st Big Time Offer a recruit receives has enormous impact & becomes his standard of comparison for all other offers.

Mullen was always late to the party, only working (half-heartedly) on the current year's prospects.

He would not have been able to balance evaluating & working this many classes simultaneously with the urgent demands of the Transfer Portal.

The infrastructure is now in place & once we start winning some games, we will be back in the thick of it.

Class of 2024 visitors:

4-star TE Caleb Odom

4-star DB Travaris Banks

4-star ATH Kylan Fox

4-star LB Adarius Hayes (Crystal ball: 100% UF)

4-star LB Rodney Hill

3-DB Cameron Keys

3-LB Joseph Phillips

3-DL Malik Blocton

Edge Adam Kissayi

LB Jordyn Perkins

S Andy Jaffe

Class of 2025 visitors:

4-star LB Gavin Nix

4-star RB Anthony Rogers

S Hilton Stubbs

LB Travis Alford

Class of 2026 visitors:

WR Naeem Burroughs

DL Bryce Perry-Wright

Who Could Replace Todd Monken at UGA?

It appears as if Todd Monken is leaving the Georgia Bulldogs. His desire to return to the NFL, where you don’t have the academic and recruiting burdens of the college game, will happen soon with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers looking like a potential destination.

Monken made all the right moves with Stetson Bennett; what happens to UGA's offense ( 65-7 ? ) if he goes to Tampa Bay ?

https://mikefarrellsports.com/college/who-could-replace-todd-monken-at-uga

Todd Monken has established one of the greatest offensive performances in Georgia history during his tenure with the Dawgs. With the addition of Bryan McClendon who was named as the passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach this past off-season, it's not hard to see what direction UGA is taking with its offensive approach.

With Stetson Bennett as the starting quarterback, the passing attack became ruthlessly efficient under Monken. UGA's offensive success rate, a measure of gaining 50% of the necessary yards on 1st down or converting, was among the best in the nation even beating out teams like Ohio State and Tennessee. In the SEC, the Dawgs led the conference in converting 3rd downs and passing efficiency.

Georgia remained a top-10 scoring offense throughout the 2022 season and finished as the 5th-ranked team with an impressive 41.1 points per game. Against teams that ended the season ranked, Georgia averaged over 46 points per game.

The Dawg's offense was arguably one of the most balanced this season. Over the 15-game season, they displayed the ability to attack defenses on the ground and through the air averaging 501.1 yards per game. The passing attack accounted for 295.8 yards per game and the rushing attack for the remaining 200 yards. Georgia was the only team to pass for over 290 yards and rush for over 200 yards per contest during the 2022 season.
https://www.si.com/college/georgia/...-should-remain-among-the-nations-best-in-2023

"...Todd Monken has a history in Tampa Bay with the Buccanneers, he was the coordinator there under the same ownership back in 2016 to 2018 when he spent three seasons with the Bucs.

According to Ian Rappaport of the NFL Network, Monken is the no. 1 target as they've just fired offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich."

I would love to see Monken return to the NFL & work with Kyle Trask !
LOL

Tough break, good luck to him for a full recovery. Long, slow recovery process - usually out for a full year before getting back to pre-injury strength.
Cam Akers made it back in about 6 months last year, but was clearly not 1p0% for well over a year.

Sadly, you are right !

"According to UFHealth.org, the recovery time following surgery to repair an Achilles tear or rupture is “about six months” to resume full activity, and a full recovery to take about nine months."

How does the OL Look Now ?

The Gators have added two offensive linemen in the transfer portal this off-season. Baylor transfer Micah Mazzccua enrolled at the UF. The Gators recently secured a commitment from Alabama transfer Damieon George, who was able to enroll at Florida despite the add/drop window at UF closing due to his transfer status.

Florida also returns William Harrod, Austin Barber, Jordan Herman, David Conner, Riley Simonds, Richie Leonard, Jalen Farmer, and Christian Williams. Florida had two offensive linemen enroll early in Roderick Kearny and Bryce Lovett.

I became extremely familiar with the pricess over the past year. I tore mine playing hoops a few days before Christmas 2021. Had surgery to repair it almost exactly a year ago. Took about 6 months to regain full flexibility, still have not regained full strength - the calf of that leg is still noticeably smaller...trying to build muscle when you are almost 60 is very difficult.
Even for an athlete in his prime, it is a slow process; I am still shocked that Akers made it back as fast as he did.

I wish him a speedy, successful recovery - hope he makes it back for the season & gets back to 100%

Recovery time for a torn Achilles tendon is quicker than it used to be but with that being said Waites is like 350 lbs. Recovery for him is probably going to take a little longer.

A Harsh Look at The Florida QB Situation

First, is a succinct recap of all of our screw ups & problems at QB. No need to rehash it.

Where to go from Here?

On the bright side, DJ Lagway in the 2024 class is already committed to the Gators. Billy Napier has to keep him and really just get by at the position for the next year.

Graham Mertz is not the answer. He was never great at Wisconsin and has almost no chance of being successful in the SEC, to be honest, he seemed like a miss for UF in the portal. The Gators must go back into the portal and grab someone better, or just get some depth.

Who else can they grab in the Portal?

Plenty of verbiage which boils down to - there are no talented & EXPERIENCED QBs currently in the portal; ones that become available in the spring portal period likely won't be any better & won't have the time to integrate themselves into a team before the season starts.

What Happens to Billy Napier if the Dumpster Fire Continues?

If Napier cannot find any more QB depth in the next few weeks, I don’t think there is any doubt that Florida will be searching for a new coach after the 2023 season.

DISAGREE - don't see UF funding Billy's $39MM Golden Parachute.
AD Scott Stricklin may force Napier to hire a QB Coach/OC; but if Billy goes, Stricklin likely out the door behind him.

Without a decent quarterback they will continue to under-preform and we all know how the fan base is in Gainesville, they will not take two to three more years of mediocrity.

Spending scholarships on more portal QBs a waste. Work on the Defense & Special teams. Maybe Mertz or Miller can keep our scoring streak alive.

Oh, there is this QB named Brown on scholarship; maybe we should work with him on the short passing game & the RPO.

Problem is that he has given up on our QB Coach & is off playing Baseball.

So there's no doubt that without another QB, we're firing Billy after this year?

Yikes dude.

Danny,

As I edited in to the post, I don't think UF is going to pony up Napier's $39MM Golden Parachute.

I think we work on the Defense & our Running game & suck it up.

Even though we have been snake bit at the QB position, I still have faith that Napier can get things turned around.

Napier has 3 more years to do his thing, IMO. To me he's done several good things and we all need patience to see if he's the guy to get us back to prominence. I'm still hopeful.
It’s interesting how there are all of these dynamic coaches out there immediately turning programs around in like 2 years and yet we are the only one on some nebulous 3 to 4 year “plan” and have to be “patient.” Wonder if Auburn fans will have to be “patient” this year? Of course we know the answer to that already….

And it would be somewhat easier to be patient and accept that there is a plan if year 1 plus under Napier hadn’t been an unmitigated disaster…which it was…and still is…

Your not exactly incorrect but how many of the "turn it around in 2 year coaches" are still around after 3-4 years? I'd have to think it thru but a lot of those guys are a flash in the pan, I'd think.

Still not a bad critique.

McLame never spent the time with 2-star Trask, and imo, it cost him his job.

So far Jeff...
Billy has not spent the time with 3-star Brown, and if that continues it could very well eventually cost him his job... JMOHO

O'Sul's coming team roster is LAY-O-DED with experienced quality and depth, so Max is unlikely to make the starting roster (jus-guessing).

So Billy should go ask/plead with Max to come back for Spring practice, and then spend whatever time is necessary to get him ready to go in the Fall....

IF Billy sticks with Mertz/Miller to the exclusion of Brown, then he'll deserve the outcome, whichever way it goes....

WR is still deficient unless one of the true freshman are ready for the opener which is highly unlikely.

At QB we probably are in some trouble as Mertz and Miller haven't looked real good in their playing time and the young QB was still struggling with learning the playback late last season. I wouldn't be surprised if we see Kyle Engel in there at some point if Mertz and Miller are really struggling.

I think most of the good ones had either a pretty good 1st season or 2nd season. People like to mention Dabo but he did have a good 10 win regular season I think in his 3rd full year. Napier better get a QB for 2024 or I dont see how we could go 9-3 or better in the new SEC setup. You can't count on a true freshman.

Which QB is playing is more important that the WR's roster imo.
There are enough quality receivers to get it done with a competent QB & OC/WR's coach.
They also have good enough TE's and RB's, IF they are used correctly in the passing game....

PS - Just added Houston xfer Will LB Mannie Nunnery 6-2 225 Sr to the roster. (247 - 2019 #94 OLB ***)
In his four years at Houston, Nunnery took part in 25 games. He accounted for 81 total tackles (48 solo), 8 tackles for a loss, 3.5 sacks, and one forced fumble. This past season in 2022 alone, he recorded 46 tackles, 3 tackles for a loss, and sack.

What WR on our depth chart makes a defense have to respect the deep routes. None of them did this past season and I doubt the true freshman will have big 1st seasons. We are handicapped at QB and WR which is not a good place to be in the SEC.

RB Trevor Etienne - L-26

What affects the receivers performance stats?
HC/Staff's Weekly Game Plan
OC / Game Day Play Calling
QB's passing abilities - AR 53.83% - Miller 59.09%
WR's coach - TE's coach - RB's coach

There are some fast receivers among that 2023 WR's group.
And this quote from what many called a slow WR -
"I may be slow, but I somehow keep getting behind all of those fast DB's."
Doering's Got A TD....
For his career, he went on to catch 149 passes for 2,107 yards and an SEC-record 31 touchdowns. He finished it with a huge senior season in which he had 70 receptions, 17 that went for TDs.
And then he went on to get drafted and played 7 season in the NFL.

You want to compare our WRs number of long catches to some other SEC teams. I doubt the comparison would look good at all for the Gators.

Honestly, didn’t even know that was a real person…no joke…
Kyle Engel helped guide St. Thomas Aquinas to the 2018 FHSAA Class 7A State Championships, finishing as runner up after a 13-2 season. He completed 67 percent of his passes with no interceptions as a senior… Selected to the 2018 Broward County All-Star Game… Received the 2018 FHSAA Class 7A Scholar Athlete Award and the 2018-19 Miami Dolphins Scholar Athlete Award. He was a two-time Maxpreps Offensive Player of the Game.

It sounds like Brown may have his work cut out for him to pass Engel on the depth chart. The same Engle who has real game experience in college unlike Brown at this point.

Where does this narrative that Billy is just....ignoring Brown?

There are a lot of odd narratives some of you are laying out as proven fact around this staff that don't make any sense beyond "I'm frustrated uuuughhhh DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT!!!!"
