Gators to Hire Ron Roberts as LB Coach, Co-Defensive Coordinator ?

I like the 2 big transfers we got. They get a nice test early as Utah's O line is supposed to be a strength of that team. Especially if Rising doesn't start at QB against us I expect them to line up and try and wear us down with that big RB.. He will run over safeties and corners if he gets loose and we have a recent history of that happening a lot to us.

ILB Height/Weight Clones.... Position group with a chance to be very good.

Mannie Nunnery - 6-1 231 rsjr - Tx / Houston xfer
Derek Wingo ------ 6-1 240 Jr - FL

Scooby Wiliams --- 6-2 233 rsSo - Ala
Teradia Mitchell --- 6-2 244 rsSr - Va / tOSU xfer

Total Ht/Wt Span:
5-11 225 to 6-2 244, 3 inches HT and 19 Lbs Wt

(solid quality depth, but my fingers crossed for a solid Shemar early injury return)

The iG is looking/hoping for Scooby and Wingo to have break-out seasons...

If I’m the SEC I’d probably pursue UNC and Virginia and that’s it. Nobody else really remotely that interesting after that but not sure if UNC will leave without Duke. But I wouldn’t add teams just to add teams. No idea what is going to happen with Miami. I do think the bigger these conferences get the more headaches we are going to have but it is what it is.

You have to give a little bit of credit to the Big 12 folks. By no means is it a good conference but at least they are going to hang around. They took it on the chin big time over the last several years with OU, Texas, Texas A&M, Nebraska and Mizzou all gone but they have at least tried and stayed aggressive and it doesn’t appear they are going to collapse, whereas the PAC-12 is just getting whipped and doing nothing about it.
That's what I want too, UNC and UVA, two flagship schools in new states that are geographically in the southeast. That would complete a true SEC conference. FSU and Clemson are not needed and frankly not desired when compared to UNC and UVA. Miami, Duke, and other private schools are on islands and aren't as worthy or desired for an SEC invite, and they're fanbases are d-bags anyway, haha.

My order of preference for SEC new members is: UNC, UVA, Clemson, FSU, NC State, VT, WVU....after that who else is big enough football wise and fits geographically and culturally?

Agree with your prioritizing of Virginia & North Carolina. I would, also, like to swap out Missouri for Oklahoma State and hope FSU and Miami are left stranded!!

I only include FSU because Florida panhandle is other SEC fanbases area for beach vacations so FSU in on shared geography and redneck t-shirt fans as like other SEC fans. Otherwise, I don't care if they go to whatever conference like Miami.

Did anyone here go to the open practice?

Just saw a few posts elsewhere on that and a couple of people seemed concerned about the pass protection. They said the new portal D linemen blew up the O line a few times just like in the spring game. One poster said Max Brown looked to have the best looking mechanics of the QBs and that you would think he was more polished than the other 2 QBs just looking at that practice. One also said Caleb Banks looks like he is ready to be a good SEC D lineman.

Cam Jackson is a major handful right now. We should be much much better on the dline this year. Quality starters and depth.

Just a random iG thought... With a somewhat weaker OL, the line and the RB's need a mobile QB that's a threat to run at any time, but that's just me....

Both Miller and Mertz have legs, so either can run..............

A FREE Open Fall Practice in the Swamp, and how many show up?
All of about 2,000 was the estimate who turned out for a rare open practice. ....

The Mertz-Miller battle reminds me of the Austin Appleby-Luke Del Rio days of the Jim McElwain era. Neither has the physical talent of an Anthony Richardson or Jeff Driskel, for example, 'but in the right system and with high-quality coaching,' one could be a reliable game manager and make the plays that are there.

Don't expect miracles in 2023, but I personally find it intriguing to enter a season when expectations range from three wins to nine wins.

Whoever expects a 9 win regular season might want to get a mental health evaluation.

That, like most of the other stuff in that post, is in the article that I linked, their thoughts and comments, not mine....

But on my part, as I posted earlier, with the Max running and passing threat, they might have a chance at 8-9 wins. Otherwise, unless a QB transformation miracle happens for either of the M&M's, it's more like 5-6-7 wins... But we'll see soon enough.

I would have never thought we would see UF and FSU both in the top 5 this late in the year in the rankings.

I'm more surprised by us than you guys. Patrick Surtain was really big in our two 5 star DBs we just got. We usually don't recruit high school very well. Hope both classes end in the top 5

Based on practice reports it sounds like our QBs may end up on the training table. Max could get his shot by the 2nd game.

Damn....I didn't realize it hurt you all that bad. We are taking Perlotte as well. Thanks for the top kids in Georgia as well. Kirbys days are numbered.
Unfortunately as much as I dislike UGA they aren’t hurting when it comes to recruiting. They needs to suffer some losses on the field as well. However, if UF, FSU, Auburn, Tennessee can up their recruiting game consistently then that could eventually lead to UGA falling off a bit. If nothing else make them work harder. It’s been too easy because everybody around them has been down. Timing is everything and they kind of caught the perfect storm when it came to that.

I know Max is a site-favorite and made some nice throws but wasn't he like 50% completion?
I like to mess with Insta, but I loved when we signed Brown. Kid looks like another Trask type diamond in the rough. My humble opinion is that he needs an opportunity. He will probably stink the first few times out, but I think there is potential. I just don't go over the top ridiculous about it like a couple of people on here..if he truly is the best he will get his chance. Napier wants to win.

It's Mertz and Miller Time.

Brown is a blind cripple with zero arm talent. His NFL daddy bought him his HS QB job.
Bull's with an ugly streak just wanted to flip a finger at McLame by taking Max away from him.
He was never intended to be a real player for Socialist-U, just a practice drone....
Back-atcha Cg1....

Losing one or two kids doesn’t impact Georgia like it does others. Kirby goes nationwide. In state does not matter. Use those kids wisely when you play BC.

I'm not trying to be sarcastic. I liked signing Brown. Mertz nor Miller are the answer in my opinion.

Agreed. If fsu, uf, and Auburn recruit better it hurts UGA. They are a tank so constantly chipping away at them is what is necessary. They need to lose, I agree, and it sucks they got this yr as a cream puff schedule

The funny thing about the Max hype online is that there's literally not 1 Gator fan that wouldn't love for him to be great. I mean - in general, fans want their team's players to do well.

But on the ultra-Max side, if you don't currently crown him the next obvious Heisman you somehow want him to fail. it's the net.

First off, IF either Mertz or Miller could come out and light it up, I'd be fine with it and behind them.
I'm just skeptical from what I've seen so far from either.
As to Max, none of us KNOWS what he can do in a college game, a real shame that Billy didn't give him at least a few plays in that blowout loss bowl....
=====

I think the offense can work in 2023 and potentially be effective. It will undoubtedly be limited as Graham Mertz doesn't have the arm to support a consistently vertical offense, but he made the quick, short-to-intermediate concepts work on Saturday.

Billy Napier's ground-and-pound offensive philosophy is a bit out of date in the present era as is, and it appears he will lean into that approach greatly this year considering Florida's current quarterback situation. Napier's offense wants to wear defenses down with a physical rushing game that is supplemented by the air attack.

Opposing defenses are likely to sell out against the run this season and dare Mertz to beat them through the air. (use the link for the entire article)

^^
I'm in a wait-and-see mode for all of them. I haven't seen anything consistent from any of the 3 to give me hope any are more than average though I hope I'm wrong. I'm sure they all looked good in HS - from all reports Miller is simply sub-par his entire time at UF. Sounds like it's Mertz or Max moving forward.

My hope is that both/either Mertz/Max both play well enough that we don't have to start Lagway next year.

Shoooooot. We got like 7 gimme wins this year. 9 wins isn’t far fetched.
lol

I have 2 for-sure losses - 3 sure wins and the rest are tossups. But with details from coaching and 2nd year in the program...if Napier is "the guy" we should win most of those. If he can't instill discipline, bad penalties, bad x's, and o's in critical situations, etc...who knows where the W's end up.

I'm looking for statistical improvements of course, total O and D, but I'm really interested in the more soft-skill and culture changes: less "bad" penalties while still playing aggressively. Players know where they should be on the field, even if they don't make the play. That's what I'm looking for this year.
