GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Florida's starting quarterback against Tennessee will be decided later in the week.
Although redshirt freshman Will Grier played the entire game at Kentucky, a 14-9 victory Saturday, coach Jim McElwain hasn't committed to giving Grier a third consecutive start when the Gators (3-0, 1-0 Southeastern Conference) host the Volunteers (2-1) on Saturday.
Grier completed 13 of 22 passes for 125 yards, with a touchdown and an interception against the Wildcats. He also ran 12 times for a team-high 61 yards and a score. McElwain says Grier used "his feet as a check down" too often and left plays on the field.
Grier has thrown for 442 yards and four touchdowns. He also has two interceptions and a fumble.
Sophomore Treon Harris has thrown for 269 yards and two scores.

Doesn't surprise me after the last 2 weeks. He will probably start Grier but may have a short leash if he thinks a change needs to happen depending on how things are going.

Grier had to use his feet as a check down.

Have you seen our OL?

I'm interested to know about his injury.

Sounds like Mac reviewed the tape and saw he had check down options and wasn't throwing to them I guess.

Imo Grier needs to just take the job if he is definitely the future. If he is good enough he will and that will end all this. If he isn't and Harris isn't up to the task either then we need to get someone in here who is. No one deserves to just be handed the job if they haven't earned it.

Grier's decision to run earlier in the game were the right choices. But from about the second quarter onward he was barely completing his drops before taking off. Like I mentioned, it's understandable but he most definitely had some happy feet. I think the same thing would happen to Treon. That's what happens when you play young QB's behind bad o-lines.

I'm telling you like I said Saturday or Sunday Grier is no running QB, he will get hurt. I don't care how many yards he got in HS, he hasn't been up against these big and fast SEC defenses. I don't think anybody wants to see him get hurt because it could affect his playing skills and decision making after he heals. If he is using he is leaving plays on the field and using his feet too much he is not seeing the field or he does not know where his receivers are at. This is exactly what happened to JD thanks to Muschamp.

I pretty much took it as coach talk...Mac isn't going to tell the media too much of anything involving injuries or the QB compition, until he really has too...that's why we have found out aboutthe starting QB on Fridays do far. It seems pretty clear that the coaches think that Grier can win now and is the better all around QB in the long run...otherwise they wouldn't have started him and let him play the whole game. I think that this is also a message to Grier that he's on a leash, if he doesn't earn it on the field then Treon will be in. Also the coach realizes that all the bad plays aren't the QB'S fault...dropped passes, passes hitting players in the back and the horrible line play. If Grier plays decent he will continue to play provided he is healthy imo. He's the full time starter.

I'd probably think twice about checking it down after what Bailey did last week to damn near give the game away embarrassing himself and Powell on the last drive against UK not even turning around at all and letting UK almost grab it for a game ending pick 6. There was a reason Grier was throwing it low on those passes to Mcgee and Fulwood.. or on that slant that would have pretty much damned kentucky on 2nd down in the 2nd half WIDE OPEN to powell where it bounced off his hands like a super ball up into the air. These are the things Mac was talking about in camp.

Franks, Sterling-Cole or Haskins. Thats who he wants
He doesn't want Sterling-Cole. He stopped recruiting him a while ago now. He's after Franks and a few others. He would really like the STA kid earlier but can't do anything about that.

you guys really have a dilemma. Tennessee's weakness, besides the classroom, has to be their secondary, and Grier gives you the best chance throwing downfield. But UF's weakness is the Oline, so its a good question as to whether Grier will have time to throw downfield. Maybe they'll pull a Georgia and let Treon hand the ball off all game.

If you listen to everything Mac has said since spring, the QB he wants is NOT on the roster

I think so also. A supposedly reliable poster on another site claimed that Summers even made a statement implying that when asked about the O line after Spring practice while on a fishing trip with some people.

How is that for certain? I haven't seen Grier tearing up defenses with many long throws through the air against ECU or Kentucky so far and Treon has hit a bunch of long throws through the air in his limited time playing QB for Florida.

Talking to Frank's a few years back, (Wakulla county) Florida Gators was his first choice. Stated that he "wanted to be every thing Tebow was to Florida and more". How things change in such a short period of time. Maybe he'll come back to his roots.

These damn weed suspensions are getting ridiculous for something that should probably be legal. I guess you have to blame the players some for not being slick enough to beat the testing system knowing they are going to be tested but its crazy. I bet 80% of these players smoke at some point during the year. The amount is probably almost as high as players drinking under 21.

Well, these guys know the rules, and still chose to ignore them.. Too bad. Hope they both make their way back.

Just because something is a law or a rule doesn't make it right. Its time for this tyranny with regards to college athletes and weed to end.

I do blame them for being naive and not being prepared to pass the test somehow however.

There are a lot of rules and laws I consider to be stupid. Doesn't mean that I go out and violate them

The testing during the season is random so there's no way for them to know how to beat it other than to not smoke. The crazy part is they'll only grab like a handful of players and test them so it's not as if they test the entire team. So it's stupid when people say "well the other players were smart enough not to get caught." Not really, they could have just lucked out and not been one of the handful of players chosen to be tested for that round.

They used to tell the coaches when testing would be but a few years back they found of coaches were telling players when the tests would be to help them avoid testing positive. Because if they did at that point it's a university decision to suspend. I know that gained a lot of negative attention so idk if coaches still get the test dates or not.

This isn't the first time Mac has had disciplinary issues with Treon and Tabor.

If memory serves, Treon, who never had a drivers' license, was stopped for speeding on campus last year in an auto he didn't own that reaked of weed, and marijuana was found in the car. Tabor was one of 3 Gator players in the vehicle. Mac said he was going to handle it internally. Whatever the internal handling was, neither player missed playing time.

After game 2 this fall, Mac took a big stand publicly about changing things at UF. Now his back-up QB (still flirting with the starter's role) along with a starting D-back (freshman All-American last year) have put him in a pickle. Wonder what Mac said to these guys this time around. Yikes.

We aren't talking about felonies or beating up women here.

If we were, I'd expect we'd be talking about those guys being thrown off the team...which happens at most places, including your rivals.

I'm just saying Treon and Jalen have put Mac in a tough spot having to deal with them twice in the past 9 months, and considering their value to the team.

I agree but at this point there is nothing we can do about that.

Who is the QB he wants? That 2 star career back up? The guy going into his junior year of HS? Some other target.

Yep, that 2 star QB-PP only completed 9 of his 12 passes (75%) for 125 yds,13.9 yds/comp with 2 TD's this week, so he'll never do well as a QB, just ask rivals. (or you can trust the coaches recruiting him)
