Feleipe Franks Officially Gator

A verbal commitment is not Official. There's a lot of time between now and signing day and these young kids and their egos can be very fickle. Franks was "official" to LSU last week, right? And the CB Meyers was "official" to UF until today. The coaches seem to be putting together a pretty good class, but we won't how good until national signing day and even then the true quality won't be known for 2-3 years. As for the QB situation, I expect Luke Del Rio to be the opening day starter. It's just too much to expect a kid still playing high school ball to come in and start. I know it's happened, but the better bet is on an older guy who's already played some. How good he will be, only time will tell. Our schedule next year is very favorable, especially considering how tough they normally are. At Tennessee & At Arkansas, plus LSU at home and At FSU are the games I see as most challenging. The other 3 OOC games are true cupcakes.

OK, so NOW it is officially official:

Excited to OFFICIALLY welcome Feleipe Franks (@18franks) to the @GatorsFB family as a midyear enrollee. #16ATORS

Great News. I still think Del Rio will be opening day QB, but I'm glad Franks is officially a Gator.

Del Rio was 3rd string at Bama, so he bailed out.
Del Rio was 2nd string at OreSt, so he bailed out there too.

Del Rio will not beat out either Franks or Trask this Spring,,, book it! o_O

Without seeing the Spring practices and game yet, it's all just speculation.

However, IF Franks takes a redshirt (I doubt it), then I expect Trask to be the 2016 starter.
And if Trask is the 2016 starter, then barring an injury, I don't expect Franks to be the starter until his Sr year.
(which is why I doubt that he redshirts)

And before anyone starts, I have no dog in this hunt, I'd be happy with either as I've said.
They look like brother/clones to me, so I'd be happy if they turn out to be 1a and 1b in Sept.

If a guy who couldn't rise above 4th string at Bama and their trash heap of QB's is our best, then we're in trouble. I'm not buying any of this hype because in the summer everyone was gushing about Grier and how he was head and shoulders above everyone on the roster. But now that Grier is gone Del Rio is now the one that was better than everybody? Ooooook. The next guy on the bench is always a superstar. I'd rather play one of the freshmen and be done with it.

I have no idea how good or bad Del Rio is, but what you said above is not true. Shane Matthews and Travis McGriff both have said that Del Rio has been the best QB on the roster ever since the summer. They said that while Grier was with the team. Del Rio wasn't eligible this year but both McGriff and Matthews said he would have been our starting QB this year if he was. It's been reported by many people that Del Rio has looked like the best QB on the roster in practice. I guess we shall see what happens this upcoming season. That's all we can do.

So that's two guys. And everyone else? Not a single one that I can recall mentioned Del Rio or Harris being anywhere near Grier. People were gifting the job to Grier at the end of the spring. That was the consensus over and over again. I find it convenient that now all of a sudden a good amount of people have felt Del Rio was the best all along. Just seems like more fluff to me, which is what most of these reports are.

No it has been many more people than just those 2 that have said that Del Rio has always looked like the best QB on the roster. The issue was Del Rio was ineligible to play in 2015 so it didn't really get a lot of media attention because of that. We will now find out. Not to mention it is practice so who knows what happens when he goes "live".

Yep.

Losing Grier hurt. Regardless of the "real" story.

What the two freshmen QB did, or didn't do in HS, is not relevant to what happens in March.
What Del Rio did last summer or on the scout team is also not relevant to what happens in March.

Shane Matthews and Travis McGriff have coached for how long, and at where?
Compared to the BCS-NC's that both McElwain and Nussmeyer have won as OC's-QB's in the SEC.
Sorry, but Shane and Travis just have their own (oft times biased) opinions, just like the rest of us. o_O

I look forward to seeing the competition at all positions (but especially at QB) this Spring and their performance in the Spring game.

I see UF's future being bound up in either Franks or Trask (or both) being the 2016 and beyond QB. If it ends up being Del Rio, or anyone else, then I'll personally be disappointed, but I'll still trust Mc-staff's decision. After all, it's what they are getting the BIG bucks for. o_O
(and much better than listening to either Dunny or Ooozzie) :p

It seems like quite a few people around the program are saying it...

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- With Will Grier gone from the program and Jim McElwain and the Florida Gators officially hitting the reset button at quarterback, the question on every fan's mind right now is who will suit up as the starter there in 2016.
While the contestants for the battle haven't even necessarily been fully settled on yet -- Florida's still got a chance to land another quarterback in its recruiting class, or perhaps add a graduate transfer -- the dust is beginning to settle.
And one person appears to be the odds-on favorite to win the job: former Alabama and Oregon State quarterback Luke Del Rio.
Del Rio initially signed with the Crimson Tide in 2013, where he was recruited by then Alabama offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier. He transferred to Oregon State in 2014 to play under offensive coordinator John Garrett.
Both of those coaches are now in Gainesville, Nussmeier as offensive coordinator and Garrett as a quality control coach.
So Del Rio has plenty of familiarity with Florida's offensive staff and system already. He's also had a year to learn the ropes while sitting out due to NCAA transfer rules.
"I think Luke's been having some really good practices out there," coach Jim McElwain said. "I think you guys were probably updated even through kind of the summer of when he came here, he was a little bit of a sparkplug out there. A guy who kind of knows how to go about it."
Indeed, ESPN's Ed Aschoff reported over the summer, back when Del Rio was still seeking an immediate eligibility waiver, that Del Rio was the standout quarterback at Florida's summer workouts.
Former Florida quarterback Shane Matthews has also not been shy about praising Del Rio. He stated a handful of times on local radio interviews -- one even before Grier's appeal had been ruled on -- that he thought Del Rio would be Florida's starting quarterback in 2016 no matter what happened with Grier.
SEC Network analyst Chris Doering had also made similar comments.
So there's certainly a lot of buzz about Del Rio, a player who in three years has transferred twice and played just three games, going 8-18 passing for 141 yards.
A player that currently isn't even on scholarship, with McElwain unsure if that will even be possible moving forward.
"We'll see when it comes, but that really doesn't matter," McElwain said. "We're excited he's here.
"He'll be a guy obviously heavily in the mix moving forward. We're sure excited he's here."
Del Rio will have to beat out a pair of freshmen early enrollees, at a minimum. Four-star prospect Feleipe Franks and three-star recruit Kyle Trask are set to enroll for the spring semester.
They'll be playing catchup on Del Rio, though. And judging by the comments from people like Aschoff, Matthews, Doering and even McElwain, that won't be an easy task.
The 6-foot-1, 216-pound third-year quarterback has impressed behind closed doors

I agree losing Grier hurts. I never said otherwise. With that being said we were going to be without Grier for the first 6 games anyways. People have been talking since Grier got suspended who would be the starting QB in 2016. This talk about Del Rio has been going since Grier's suspension.

Could anyone explain to me why some continue to diss on Nuss, like he's some kind of idiot that Mc is doing a favor for in hiring him as the Gator OC/QB's? Cause his resume' looks pretty good to me.

IF Nuss is incompetent, then so is McElwain for hiring him,,, and for keeping him... o_O (not likely)

Nuss said; "Trask is better than any of the 5 star QB's coming out of HS that I've seen this year."

I watched Trask's film and he looked like a 4-5 star to me. Footwork, mechanics, arm strength, mobility, etc, and he's as SOLID as a teammate as anyone could ever ask for. Character & Citizenship is also 4.0.
I don't know if Trask can win the job, but he certainly has worked hard and deserves a shot at it imoho.
And I trust Mc-Nuss in their evaluations of a QB's potential.

If he was the backup in high school...what is the film from? mop up duty? Did the starter get injured? Is the film from camps, etc? I have not seen any film so not sure where the assessment is coming from. Thanks.

So the best guy on the roster who would start if he were eligible couldn't beat out the quarterbacks at either Alabama or Oregon State.

Damn.

That's pretty discouraging.

It's also a helluva comment on how poor the other quarterbacks on the roster are which would include Will Grier.

PS I've know Travis McGriff since we were kids. I've never liked the mouthy prima donna.

If you have so much faith in Nuss' evaluation abilities, maybe you should take a look at who he recruited at Washington or Bama...it ain't pretty. And his own actions contradict his words. We said we wanted two QB's and yet with both Trask and Frank's committed we were still chasing more. Why would that be if we have two studs already and liked what we had so much? Have many teams signed classes with THREE stud QB's in them? Hmmmm....

What you take/offer is what you take/offer.
However, leaving the recruiting door OPEN is just plain 'good sense' imo.
Nuss watched Trask in person in Manvel, Tx and then brought Trask to FNL's.
Mc then watched him in person at FNL's and made him the ship offer.
What an oozzzzzz....

IF YOU think that Nuss is a bad hire for OC, then you also think that McElwain is an idiot too, right?
Or are you just just another with the habit of talking outta both sides of your mouth? o_O

Why would one not dis Nuss? The guy is terrible, and its not like we killed it on O this year.
