Fall Basketball practice begins today. First game on Mon. Nov. 6th

Chris Harry's base line-up guess, along with roster depth:

1. CG Krugel 6-5 207 So - Dr Phillips HS Orlando, FL
2a. PG Clayton 6-2 195 Jr - Iona xfer
2b. PG Zyon Pullin k6-4 206 Grad-Sr - UC Riverside xfer
3. SF/SG Richard 6-4 206 Jr - Belmont xfer
4. PF/C Tyrese Samuel 6-10 239 Grad-Sr - Seton Hall xfer
5. C Micah Handlogten 7-1 235 So - Marshall xfer, Sun Belt Fr of Yr

With pretty good depth at all positions, see roster above.

With a way under-rated incoming Fr class:
C/PF Alex Condon 6-11 232 Fr - Australia - played Aus-football before growth spurt
(the iG would have Alex watching Larry Bird highlights on a regular basis)
PF/C Thomas Haugh 6-9 210 Fr - New Oxford, PA
PG Kajus Kublickas 6-2 171 Fr - Lithuania (Played for U-18 & U-20 teams)
CG Cooper Josefsberg 6-4 195 Fr - Riviera Prep, Miami, FL - 3A Champ Runner-ups

With a way under-rated incoming Fr class:
C/PF Alex Condon 6-11 232 Fr - Australia - shoots 3's and played Aus-football before growth spurt

Bird had a tremendous shooting stroke, but that was just a part of his game.

One of the best drop back fall away unblockable high arcing shooters ever.
He once played the 1st 3 Qtr's of a game shooting only left handed, just to show that he could.
High B-Ball IQ, matched with relentless work on every part of his game.

Unconscious no-look passing for assists. He was always looking to pass, not a ball hog.
Always alert for rebounds, and looking to 'tap' the pass/assist without even catching it.

Larry Bird played 13 seasons for the Celtics, (injuries finally forced him to retire)
He won the Rookie of the Year award.
He was selected to play in 12 All-Star games in his 13 years.
He was one of only 3 players to ever be voted
3 consecutive MVP awards,
2 Finals MVP awards.
3 NBA championships.
He averaged 24.3 points, 10.0 rebounds and 6.3 assists in 897 regular-season games.
Career -- 49.6% FG - 37.6 3's - 88.6 FT's

Larry also won the first 3 NBA Three-Point Shooting Contests before retiring from the event in 1988.
He won his 3rd and final in 1988 while still wearing his warm-up jacket....

Larry was the best 'clutch' shooter ever. An Opposing coach once commented that if he need a final shot to win a game, he'd choose Michael Jordan, but if he needed a final shot to save his life, then he'd choose Larry Bird.....

Larry won MVP's as a Player, CoY with Pacers, and Front Office of the Year. He's the only one to ever accomplish that.... (and many of his fellow players have said that he was a world champ at 'calm-quiet' trash talking)

Here are some of his highlights, if you want to see what a Legend played like....

Insta makes a compelling case that Larry Bird was really good at basketball. I hadn’t realized it before.
While the always astute dudlygator misses the point of the post, having Gator's outside shooting forwards try to learn from what one of the best did, both on and off the court....

I'd also have the Gator guards trying to learn and be inspired by the careers of guys like former Gator PG, 'White Chocolate' (Jason Williams). The hours of non-game practice that they put into their craft....

Breaking News:

EJ Jarvis transferred to the University of Florida from Yale this offseason. He is now stepping away from the team due to personal reasons, Florida head coach Todd Golden said during a media availability on Tuesday.
Golden confirmed Jarvis' absence following the unit’s first official preseason practice of the year on Monday, where the Washington, D.C., native was notably missing. The timeline for his return is unknown.

During his absence, and the aforementioned uncertainty regarding the timeline for his return, Florida will look to fellow newcomers Micah Handlogten, Tyrese Samuel, Alex Condon and Thomas Haugh to control time at the four spot. While injured out PF Aleks Szymczyk is expected to return to the court in 10-12 weeks.

Gators/Todd land a Commit from 2024 SG Isaiah Brown a Gator Legacy from Orlando, FL.

#22 SG Isaiah Brown 6-4 185
Brown's facilitation will be a significant factor in his volume of play early in his career at Florida as Golden and Co. look for him to provide an alternative to whoever operates the offense from the one spot while he's in Gainesville.

On the defensive end, Brown is a difficult matchup for his opposition, given the length, bounce and stout frame he carries.
He often creates tipped balls and disrupts passing lanes due to a wide-reaching wingspan relative to his frame, and has the aptitude to man up on one through three at the next level as a result.

As a result, Brown possesses an intriguing two-way skillset with raw talent on both ends to make a case for near-immediate playtime when he drives from Orlando to Gainesville to enroll at UF this time next year.

Good pickup! Like the tall guards

After transferring in from Yale this offseason, Jarvis took a leave of absence from the program due to personal reasons without a timeline offered for his return.

Yale transfer wing EJ Jarvis, who committed to the Gators on March 31, is stepping away from the game of basketball. He will not suit up for the Gators in the 2023-24 campaign as a result.

Does that hurt us much?

Does that hurt us much?
We can not know the full answer to that question, him having never played a game with this team???
I guess it hurts a little bit though, for the age-experience-talent and depth at position is no longer there. That said....

PF EJ Jarvis 6-8 220 Grad-Sr - Yale Xfer - Withdrew from team
He was named second-team All-Ivy League
Jarvis missed a few weeks of work with an injury and has some catching up to do, but he'll get there. Once there, he'll play with a quiet and stoic demeanor, but he will defend, rebound, take care of the ball and finish around the rim. In other words, he'll do all the things a team needs from a role-playing big. And let's not forget: He went to Yale, so the basketball IQ is a given.

PF Tyrese Samuel 6-10 235 Grad-Sr - Seton Hall Xfer
He averaged 11.0 points, 5.9 rebounds and shot 56.6% inside.

PF Aleks Szymczyk 6-10 250 So - Frankfurt, Germany
He broke his left foot Aug. 29 and likely won't be cleared to return until sometime in December.

PF Thomas Haugh 6-9 210 Fr - New Oxford, PA

PF/C Alex Condon 6-11 230 Fr - Perth, Australia

For a rundown on the others, use the link:
Some good words on those 2 Fr in that article.

The Gators are Lay-O-Did at the PG position for 2023-24.

CG Zyon Pullin 6-4 206 Grad-Sr - UC Riverside Xfer - Co-Starter
1st-team All-Big West Conference

Will miss the 1st 3 games due to an NCAA suspension.

CG Julian Rishwain 6-5 200 Grad-Sr - San Francisco Xfer
Working back from a season ending knee injury at SF.

PG Walter Clayton Jr 6-2 195 Jr - Iona Xfer - Co-Starter
2023 Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference PoY

CG Denzel Aberdeen 6-5 190 So - Orlando, FL
Most Improved from 2022-23 season. - Kugel's State Champs teammate

PG Kajus Kublickas 6-2 171 Fr - Lithuania
He played in the youth program for BC Zalgaris
He also got a couple swings with their pro team.
-----

These 3 talented WO's could maybe be starters at smaller D1's imo:

PG Bennertt Andersen 6-2 190 Sr - WO Tampa, FL, a former Gator team manager

PG Jack May 6-4 195 rsJr - PWO - Boca Raton, FL - Son of former Gator coach Dusty

CG Cooper Josefsberg 6-4 195 Fr - WO - Miami, FL - HS 3A State Champs
IMOHO - Next year he might get a ship and be competing with Aberdeen and Kublickas for playing time. I expect all of the other non-WO's to be gone by then, but IF Clayton returns, then he's the most likely starter with those others working for their individual playing time.

I have a bad feeling about this year's basketball team. 2 portal guys have opted out, another is suspended for the start of the season. Hoping for the best, but I don't know, man.

ocala, they have enough quality personnel to get it done, IF the coaching is up to a high standard?
So, barring injuries, they should be good to go. After all, wasn't Golden hired because he was going to be the 2nd coming of BillyD???

Missing Zyon for the first 3 games is not a big deal imo, because of the lay-O-did G positions. Clayton and Aberdeen should be fine at PG in those first 3 games until Zyon returns for game 4.

They've got Krugel & Richards at SG/SF.

They got 7-1 Handlogten at center.
They got PF/C 6-11 Condon to back him up.

Plus they got:
6-10 Szymczyk - back from the Aug. broken foot in Dec.
6-10 Samuel
6-9 Haugh

With several others on the roster that are also chomping at the bit to earn playing time.
It's time to either put-up, or STFU imo...

Getting to know the newbee Fr.

PG/SG Kajus Kublickas 6-2 171 Fr - Launas, Lithuania

Just a side note - former Gator Kevarrius Hayes plays for Lithuania.
We might owe Hayes a thank-you note?

This is the first film that I've watched on Kajus (he's #9),,, AND I LIKE IT!!!

Between Aberdeen, and maybe Kublickas too, playing in the 1st 3 games with starting PG Clayton,,, maybe Pullin will have trouble getting fully back into the rotation???

We shall see. I should be from Missouri because I want them to Show Me they're good before I'll believe it. :)

Which SEC teams finished 2022-23 with an over-all losing record?

UF 16-17
LSU 14-19
SC 11-21
MS 12-21

I’m still dubious of our talent although it seems like he got better regarded players this year in the portal. And Kugel looks like maybe the best player we’ve recruited in a while. Will be interesting to see if any of these freshmen contribute. I was way down on Golden as a gameday coach early in the season but he showed a little something as the year went on. I would say he’s slightly ahead of the Billy Napier pace, which is pretty faint praise.

Just for gd3, not that it matters now.

Dan and Mike never had a losing season as Gator HC's.
While Billy and Todd have never had a winning season as Gator HC's.... 😜

Dips1t Dan was 5-9 in his last 14 games at UF.
Twit - Maybe it was the UAA and others that were the cause, instead of Dan....

And I'm sure that the Scamdemic and UF response to it had nothing to do with the results...
