2023 Baseball & Softball Thread

Even our softball program isn’t as good as it used to be. Most of our sports teams have regressed since Stricklin has been our AD.
Paco, don't understand your logic of wanting to blame Stricklin for every little thing. Softball has not regressed, WCWS last year. doing OK this year given pitching leaves a little to be desired. Guess we need Stricklin to do a better job of recruiting over one of the best coaches in College Softball. You are better than this, try another subject the next few days, please.......jim

Sorry…not a fan of Scott Stricklin. That won’t change until I see a “real” commitment to improving some of the “revenue” generating sports and not just fundraising to improve facilities. He knows how to make the “Bull Gators” and big UF donors happy. So I’ll give him that.

Got the sweep at Ole Miss 7-4. Freshmen led the way, with Chris Arroyo getting the win out of the bullpen and Cade Kurland and Luke Heyman leading the offense. Heyman had 2 HR and Kurland had 3 hits, a HR and 4 RBI.

Nice sweep for the baseball team on the road. Jac had 8 walks in just over 4 innings of work. Yikes...also had 3 errors today. We have some things to clean up

I would say so far, our pitching looks good, not great. We don’t have that headline starter but top 2 are very solid. Cags has been a better than average sunday starter with upside to be better than that. I’m sure it’s tough to develop as a pitcher when you’re also the best hitter in the country.

Offense has been mindblowing. We didn’t even miss Langford and the guy is a top 5 pick in the draft. I do hope he comes back and hits like he was early. Looks like we’ve got 4-5 all sec/all American bats and the rest of the guys look like good SEC hitters.

Bullpen is firming up after some blow ups early. I think sully is figuring out who he can depend on. But looks like BP will be solid and Abner, Ficarotta and Neely look capable of handling high leverage situations.

Infield defense is probably our biggest question mark. Halter, Rivera, Kurland and Cags have all kicked it around a little bit. That is a hell of an offensive infield but definitely concerning when you have to sweat ground balls.

All in all, who knows if the magic in this lineup will keep up, but for now it’s just kick back and enjoy.

I tell my gator friends to start tuning in. You might not see anything like Cags again.

Our starting pitching looked dominant early in the season, but has come back some. Meanwhile our awful bullpen has settled down some/

Yikes. I didn’t see the game until it was out of hand but Sproat must have had a tough time. Underwhelming year for him so far. Starting pitching as a whole has been pretty average. Just have to win tomorrow. I’d sure rather be trying to win a series on Sunday than trying to fight off a sweep.

Sproat was terrible. Didn't get through the 2nd inning, where Auburn scored 8 runs. Bats couldn't get going either. Softball was even worse. Got beat by SEC bottom-feeder 13-10. We had scored 7 runs in the top of the 6th to take a 10-6 lead and then gave up 7 runs in the bottom of the inning. This team has zero pitching - the worst pitching in the Tim Walton era, IMO. For a team that was picked to win the SEC, we're going to finish under .500 in conference play.

Bad deal all around.

As good as this team can be, I doubt they will go all the way. They remind me of the 2021 team a couple years ago that could beat anybody.....but could get stomped by anybody as well. That's not what you want in a team when it comes to elimination games at the end of the year.

It's baseball and nobody going 30-0 in conference play. Won't be the last time we drop a game.
Yep.

Our pitching does seem a little prone to giving up the big numbers more than you would like. But that’s across the SEC. Hate to see it on a Friday night. Just need to get this one today.

UF softball is in deep trouble. Looks like maybe the weakest team in the Tim Walton era. We're 3-4 in the SEC. Missouri is 1-9 in conference play, their only win is against us. South Carolina only had 2 wins against UF in 20 years until last night. Our ERA in league games is now over 6.00. And our next 3 conference series are against Auburn (5-2), Georgia (7-1) and Tennessee (9-1). And while our total offensive numbers are impressive, against SEC competition it's middle of the pack. And our fielding in SEC games is only .960. Not looking good.

Baseball team comes from 8-3 down to win 17-8 and take the series with Auburn 2-1. Freshman Catcher Luke Heyman had 8 RBI, including a grand slam and reliever Ryan Slayer threw perfect innings in the 6th, 7th, 8th & 9th to allow of Florida offense to stage the comeback.
UF softball got 1-hit by South Carolina, lost 3-0 and dropped their series 2-1, slipping to 4-5 in the SEC. The Gamecocks had won only 2 games against the Gators in 20 years, but then won 2 games this weekend. Long road ahead for Florida softball this year, especially after being picked to win the conference and starting the season ranked #5.

Baseball’s done this a few times where that lineup just keeps coming. Guys are climbing all over each other to do damage. Now Heyman looks like the best bat in the lineup. Amazing.

Wondering if Cags might be better in the bullpen for a while. That’s asking a lot to be the Sunday starter and best hitter in the country. Sully used Brian Johnson back in the day out of the pen, and he was really effective pitching and hitting.

Great series win particularly considering the start.

So odd with what is happening on the softball team. When we get solid pitching can't seem to get any hits, when we hit we can't seem to get any pitching. Might be a tough year this season, but I'm sure Walton will figure it out.
