UF WBK: Gators to End Non-Conference Against Murray State

UF WBK: Gators to End Non-Conference Against Murray State
Florida will look to record their 10th victory of the season on Tuesday afternoon.

Florida vs. Murray State
Game Information: Dec. 21 | 1 p.m. ET
Live Stream: SEC Network+
Radio: 98.1FM/850AM WRUF

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Florida women's basketball, fresh off of a victory over in-state rival Florida State, is set to finish non-conference play on Tuesday afternoon when Murray State visits Exactech Arena at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center for a 1 p.m. ET tip.

The game will be aired live on SEC Network+ with Kyle Crooks and Brittany Davis on the call. Skyler Lebron and Bree Maxwell will handle radio responsibilities on 98.1FM/850AM WRUF.

During their last outing, the Gators snapped a five-game losing skid to in-state rival, Florida State on Dec. 12. Led by a career-best 16 points from Emanuely de Oliveira, the Gators increased their all-time series lead to 43-35 while the 69-55 victory was the biggest win over Florida State since a 72- 58 win on Nov. 17, 2011. The win over Florida State marked the highest-rated NET victory of the season for UF, as Florida State entered ranked 47th.

Against the Seminoles, Florida recorded a season-low seven turnovers. The seven turnovers marked the lowest number by the Gators since Feb. 5, 2018 when they also recorded seven on the road at No. 15 Missouri.

The victory over FSU also gave Florida their ninth non-conference win of the season. If the Gators defeat Murray State on Tuesday afternoon, it would mark the first time since the 2015-16 season that the Orange & Blue have earned at least 10 wins in the non-conference. The Gators ended with 12 non-conference wins during the 2015-16 campaign.

Junior standout Lavender Briggs is closing in on 1,000 career points in her Florida career. The Provo, Utah native is currently sitting at 942 points, just 58 points away from becoming the 27th member of the club. Briggs is currently 46th in the nation and third in the SEC in field goals made at 67.

Also excelling this season, Kiara Smith's defense has risen to an elite level, sitting at 12th nationally with a total of 32 steals on the year. She is also ranked 40th in the nation in steals per game, averaging 2.67 during each outing.

Defensively as a team, the third quarter has seen the Gators at the top of their game, outscoring opponents 204-146 during the season. Florida has been almost as good heading into halftime, outscoring the opposition 216-166 in the second quarter.

Tuesday afternoon's game with the Racers will mark the first meeting between the programs.

Florida Baseball also landed JUCO two-way player from Santa Fe

JUCO two-way player Tyler Shelnut announced his commitment to the University of Florida two Sundays ago. Shelnut was previously signed to the Florida Gators out of high school but Florida didn't have enough space on their roster due to many players coming back from the canceled 2020 season. Shelnut batted .271 with 38 hits in 140 at-bats and also posted a 3-3 record with 12 saves (2nd most in all of NJCAA Division I)

Florida Baseball landed commit from 2026 RHP/UTL

While I was gone, Kevin O'Sullivan and the Florida Gators landed their first 2026 commit. Middleburg native RHP/UTL Ethan Wheeler announced his commitment to the University of Florida. Wheeler is a 6'4" 170 pound 14 year old. On the mound, he's already been clocked at 85 mph which makes him one of the top power arms in his class. On Perfect Game, Wheeler is the 46th ranked prospect and the 8th ranked RHP in the country.

OT: Difficult to understand NFL coaching

First, the Green Bay coach (whomever he is) goes totally conservative with a 7-point lead late in the game. Of course, they go three-and-out and the Ravens get the ball ... march down the field and score what should be the tying TD to send it to OT. Wait a fricken minute! Harbaugh decides to go for two ... misses and loses the game.

1) GB's coach is a wimp who should have lost the game
2) Baltimore's coach plays tight, keeps it close and then ... fails to close the deal

So, I understand why GB's coach is a pu$$y and plays it safe as so many do; I understand that Harbaugh is a tough NFL coach that knows what he's doing ... but then throws it all away with a 2-point try.

What gives?

From an FSU board

I've been a big supporter of Mike Norvell, but seeing Napier and Cristobal come in and immediately start closing on highly rated players makes me think FSU is in the process of falling further and further behind. Bud said it on the Nolecast. How much of this class exists if Hunter is never committed? Probably less than most people would like. Just look at what they lost or lost out on on Wednesday. Tennessee's highest rated recruit, Tyre West. Lousiville's highest rated recruit, DeVaughn Mortimer. Miami's highest rated recruit, Nyjalik Kelly. They're most likely going to lose out on the eventual best player in Miami's class, Kevin Coleman. They lost out on Georgia's 3rd highest recruit, Marvin Jones Jr. Not to mention losing Travis Hunter. They never really competed for Kamari Wilson, who just signed with a brand new coach. Norvell might be able to get this program to a six or seven win level, and I think FSU needs to give him time to succeed or fail, but my belief in the direction of the program has been SIGNIFICANTLY dampened in the last 3 weeks.

We can keep burying our heads in the sand or come to terms with Norvell needing to bring some juice to the staff to compete with the 2 teams we have to beat for kids given our record. I'm concerned he thinks he can run this like some mom & pop small business where it's all in the family.

Napier is hiring some high level coaches/recruiting and building an "army" off the field. I believe it because the guy turned down countless jobs until someone agreed to give him what he wants. He landed 5* Kamari Wilson and 4* Shemar James in 2 weeks.

NSD ranking?

Ok boys. Pony up to the bar and put your nuts on the line. Where is Florida’s class going to be ranked after NSD? No comments. Just want your best guess. The winner will be given some serious street cred going forward. Once again, we will base it on the 247 composite index ranking.. No portal, no Rivals, no blah blah blah ratings. By the composite. Good luck!

As I type this, we are currently 51st. We will finish….So here goes….my best guess….we will finish, 2nd…..umm…second guessing myself……we will finish…,,27th……no….no….no…..we will finish 14th.

I say 14th.

He is VERY fired up for his UF OV January 14th weekend he tells me...things he is looking for

"Really just looking to vibe with the coaches and put a face with the name and see how they are in person. I am just trying to see what Gainesville is, who are the players are and see how we vibe with each other too. I hope I have fun on the visit."

Coaching Turnstile

Not long ago on 1standten there was some discussion about how coaches rarely ever move from one big power 5 school to another. Now it has happened twice in short order with Lincoln-log Riley and "Life of Brian" Kelly switching allegiance at very inopportune times for their schools. Leaving two of the highest profile jobs in the country......certainly top 10 places I would think.

OU is in a coaching search and it could happen again.........Josh Heupel maybe?

Why? Did the planets just align this time.....or is there more going on here?

Has the game gotten that much more cutthroat? I mean, Kelly left a team that is still in the national playoff race as we speak - something that I don't recall every happening before (correct me if I am wrong please). And Riley has absolutely left OU in a Lerch.....they were apparently caught pretty off guard by this and why wouldn't they be......has a job as big as OU every had this happen before like this? And the early signing period makes it a minor disaster.......saw where Riley just took another 5 star player to USC from OU's recruiting class. How does OU not suffer a huge blow considering they may not yet have a coach come early signing date. Riley has to be public enemy number one right now in Norman......as he recruited guys for two years while getting paid by OU only to snatch them away mere weeks before they sign the dotted line. How many more will OU lose to the portal?

Seems the combination of the early signing and the portal-potty has changed the game for coaches........how would we feel if Billy Napier said he couldn't come yet because his team still had some big games to play? What is the right thing for a coach to do? I can't imagine leaving my team that is in the NC hunt, but I suspect LSU told BK to come now or blow chunks. Does the early signing period need to be trashed? If Saban retires in a few years and Bama decides to come after Billy Napier.......we going to see things differently?

I don't know.....its a different, and colder, world. Just looking for some discussion to help make sense of it all.

God bless President (I mean) Senator Manchin as he kills bbb

Broad, bulls**t blather that is.

He can tell that little b***h AOC to stick it.

Why do we not have a Chat here?

Jason, why don't we have a chatroom here like on the old site? From crazy recruiting stories, dirty laundry from other schools, to other stuff about the program/teamthat shouldn't be placed on a forum due to posterity, everyone knows the chat is where most of the knowledge/fun gets dropped by your insiders. Remember, the chat is where one of the guys dropped the nugget that Brian Kelly reached out to UF about the position a week before anyone in the national media reported it and way before he went to LSU.

Urban terminated for cause

The Jags don't want to pay out his contract. As always, the devil will be in the details on whether his morality clause is narrow enough, but it's doubtful. They might be attempting to void based on the allegations from the kicker, but they would need a full investigation into that. The NFLCA is going to be all over this one as it sets precedent.

I see this as a negotiating ploy where eventually the two sides settle on somewhere around 50-75%.
