Wouldn’t it be something if Kentucky won the East?!?!?

According to Wikipedia, the average summer high is between 92-94 in Lexington during the summer. Thank goodness for indoor practice facilities—something they don’t have at UK—and something that Mark Stoops is on the record as wanting.

Golf in Florida during the summer is sweaty business. But the dry, cool, winters make up for it.

And being close to the ocean prevents extreme heat waves like you occasionally get further inland, even up north. I was in British Columbia a couple of years ago when the temperature got up to 104. I’ve been in Seattle and Minneapolis when it was over 100. And the winter is miserable in those places.

UK has had an indoor practice facility longer than just about any other SEC team…. Started construction on it in 1992 - Nutter Field house… I worked on it

what Stoops is grousing about is that they share it with the track team when track needs to work out indoors….. and the running track cuts through the “end zones” so it’s not a full sized field. So UK needs to build a separate track facility and then rework the indoor field

In this case it does not. I've spent plenty of time in Lexington, since I lived about 20 minutes from it. Sure, there are a few cool spots around downtown, Keeneland is beautiful, but there are some cool spots in Shreveport LA but doesn't make it the place everyone wants to flock to and live.

yeah, im not comparing Lexington to Florida, but I AM refuting your characterization of Richmond to Lexington. Sorry your 20 Minutes away sucked…. As with anything your mileage may vary

I am in Richmond everyday and I have never heard some of the most ignorant comments about Richmond in my life. That place is growing. If it wasnt for the Madison county taxes, it would boom. Berea holds down that county.

Didn’t want to Piss you fine gents off. My Lexington buddies that play golf with stoops and gran and those guys, say that stoops loves to have a good time on the course and at the restaurants. Stoops is a member at LCC, a course I grew up playing on. Lots of fun and lines with 100 foot oaks and lush grass and natural rolling hills. I have heard stoops loves Lexington and the low expectations and we don’t care about football like basketball, so he is not bombarded like cal, who can’t go anywhere.

I played golf for ole miss and FSU, and caddied on tour, so I have played nearly every course in Florida, bama, miss, Ga, Tn, and Ky.

Florida golf is awesome, but it gets old, because it’s all so similar with the flat terrain, water, lack of big trees.

Also someone mentioned Richmond, ky and compared it to Lexington. These two don’t compare. Small poor town vs the good sized town with money.

Stoops is making 5 million plus a year, with low expectations, in a cool place, near ohio, and he can get away with a lot more than he can in a small college only type town. I have heard he likes the NFL
Honestly it sounds like a perfect place to ride off into the sunset. 5 mil, less pressure, hobbies in his backyard.

Win 7-8 games and he is set. Win 9-10 games he is king. Win the SECCG once and there will be a statue built and streets named after him.

I hadn't thought about the Iowa angle.

if Ferents ever hangs it up (he's 66 now) I could see them making Stoops the top choice.

Something a buddy brought to my attention. If Luke stays in Cincy with them going to the Big XII. Will that make recruiting Ohio harder for Stoops?

They've done a lot to EKU campus in the past 6 years. Several new and updated buildings. They even did some upgrading to the football stadium about 4 years ago or so.

Maybe a tad, especially if they keep up this top 10 business. I will say, they haven’t effected UK and stoops much to this point. Stoops seems to be branching out a little with recruiting. I’m noticing a wider pattern than just ohio and Florida. Seems to be targeting Va, DC, Maryland, NJ, and a little bama, Ms, and Nashville to go with FL and ohio/mich. stoops loves Juco DBs as well

I would slightly alter that solution:

UK needs to buy a half dozen treadmills for the track team for when they need to work out indoors and rework the indoor field for the team that pays for the track team (well, one of the two teams that pay for the track team).

or hell, run in the freaking rain…. I had to in high school track….
…..Except for lightning occasions; we weren’t Notre Dame

Yes, lived in Richmond Ky. The summers are hot and sticky. Just shorter. Then along comes winter, and it's fairly cold. Nah, Kentucky is a very poor state. There are some decent places in downtown Lexington, but nobody is flocking to the state for good reason. And yes, the golf courses in Florida are much better not to mention many more.
That is kind of funny, your statement about golf courses. One of my best friends that was born and raised in Florida says our courses are more challenging and nicer here in Kentucky. He also played for you fellers also.

The best golf is up north, the Midwest and California/Oregon. Kentucky’s golf is pretty good. It’s not Michigan, ohio or New York good, but it’s lush with lots of natural character. Big trees offer shade as well. Down south and without trees there is nowhere to hide

This is the King and Bear golf course in St Augustine, Florida. Those big green things in the background, not sure what they are called, could you help me out here?

Funny, golf week says it's not even close according to their rankings. Kentucky near the bottom of every category, and yes, Florida at or near the top. But I guess your friend would know better.

For your education as well.

Funny how this thread has devolved into a discussion of golf courses with respect to different state locales, etc.

I don't really golf, but from my uneducated viewpoint, the only golf course in Kentucky that could truly be considered premiere would have to be Valhalla in suburban Louisville. I'm sure there's other nice golf courses in the state, but I've never considered Ky to be a golfing mecca.

Back to the original thread topic, UK has moved solidly to the middle of the pack of the SEC and at least is no longer a joke of a program as it has been in the past. I would love to see it happen, but UK winning this Saturday in Athens is extremely unlikely.
In my humble opinion I think it's going to be much closer than many think. Cat defensive front is solid, and dawgs not exactly lighting it up on offense. The challenge will be can KY generate enough offense. Cats will need some mistakes and some short fields. I would love to see them win.

If you can stand up to GA's running game you have a chance. Curious if Georgia can really shut down KY's running game also.

Great Course! But at least 1 and half hours from Gainesville. Florida is full of great courses. Most are flat and built out of wetland so they are very penal (meaning if you miss the fairway, the ball is likely gone) for bad golfers like stoops and friends. I’m sure stoops loves Florida courses, but playing them every day in the summer would be a pounding in many ways compared to LCC where he plays. Full of oak trees (not southern pine) and hills and no water or lost balls.

Stoops is a Midwest guy, I would think he would prefer KY golf over golf in Tuscaloosa, tally, aub, Oxford, Baton Rouge even the mighty g-vile.

Im also not saying Lexington is the next Austin tx. But, it does beat many a college town in the south if you’re making 5 mil a year. Just my opinion.

But, the main reason he likes Lexington is the job security and 5 million a year with a yearly escalator clause. He could go .500 for many years and wouldn’t get fired.

Thanks, but since playing UF we have lost McCall and oxendine, our 2 starting DL. This gonna hurt. Our backups are frosh or guys with far less talent. I think we lose by 14

How’s UK going to score on UGAs defense? They could hardly move the ball on our defense. Their first TD was a bad play by our defense. Their 2nd TD was a blocked field goal and their 3rd TD was off a short field from an interception. I don’t see how they are going to score enough points without some breaks or fortunate bounces that go their way.

That is definitely an issue. We only have 1 high level WR. And Ali is out. Our run game is our strength and if that can’t get going it’s over.

I think UGA will have to throw some picks or fumble for us to stay in this game

Agreed. Don’t get me wrong UK has a good team but UK is going to need some big breaks. The UGA defense is better than ours and it is in Athens.

I'm loving this thread. Nothing like giving them their own medicine. See Billy Donovan to UK.

Couple quick points.

So glad to finally see knowledgeable posters discuss total record not really meaning anything. I get so tired of seeing other fans cite Stoops total record as him being a bad coach. When he got to UK, we had less talent than most MAC teams. And it's common sense that any coach walking into any program for the first 2-3 seasons is just coaching the talent left over by former coach. You don't really see what a coach can do until about year 3. Since years 3/4 we have been on an uptrend. Just look at where we were 10 years ago compared to now. Hell, Vandy was kicking our teeth in in Jokers next to last game. So kudos to you all

Secondly, I'm not in Lex but I've heard and read for years that coaches love it there. I dont know about players as much since it's probably not as exciting. But families love it there. It's true the eastern part is a crap hole and unfortunately I live there, but hey it's where family and home is. So it is what it is. But dont ever confuse eastern ky with Lexington. Its a pretty nice city.

Stoops has done a really good job at UK. He's moved them from bottom 1/3 to upper 1/3 this year. If the season doesn't go south on KY, he will be a hot commodity. Who knows if he would jump or not.

I think everything you said is correct. I was born in Knott County but live in southcentral Kentucky. But when I retire, I am back to the eastern part. Most likely Letcher County.

From what we have heard, the 2 schools he loves is Miami and FSU. But FSU kinda left him with a sour taste in his mouth last time. They called him and he thought he was a serious candidate for the job. Then they let him know he was just part of the interview process. And acted like they were doing him a favor.

Miami on the other hand I worry about.

I hadn't thought about Miami. South Florida produces nearly 300 D1 recruits each year. Miami getting smacked again today, Diaz probably done after this season.

Yah apparently he loved his stay there and has a lot of "warm memories" and would actually listen. Outside of Miami, I think it would have to be a huge power program to offer. And I think the catch with that is so many programs are like "Theres no way I would want a Kentucky coach". I've seen that posted in numerous places.

Well his Cat team is hanging tough on the road against dawgs. Hope they can pull it out.

People who never heard of Bear Bryant, I would imagine.
