Many posters here are worried about Gator's run game; I am one of them !

Posters here have advanced many theories for our lack of productivity & even more important - the lack of dependability (can we get a tough yard when we need it) of our run game

Reasons offered -
  1. the scheme - not using spread option as much; QB more under-center hand-offs.
  2. four new OL starters.
  3. TEs not blocking
  4. the RBs - they are bigger or smaller; faster or slower.

I am not smart enough to know; will leave it up to Mullen & John Hevesy.

Kentucky ran all over us last year & basically bottled up our run game.

Miami did the same this year.

KY interior players - DT & NG - out weigh Miami's interior by 65 lbs; UK's edge rushers - DE outweigh Miami by the same; 60 lbs.

Against Miami, UF's pass blocking OK; but run blocking poor; don't know how well they will come out against UK's even bigger DL.

UK DL is bigger; but are they better ? Are they as fast as Miami ? Which is harder for our OL to handle - size or speed ?

Who has the best LBs; how much do they influence run support ? IDK; size of DL easy to quantify; skill levels much harder.

Guess we find out Saturday.

2019 Comparison of Miami DL to Kentucky DL

Miami...............total weight..........................................1107

…...............Position....Name.....................Height.........Weight

…...............DT.............Jonathan ford..........6’ 5”............306

…...............DT.............Pat Bethel................6’ 3”............290

…...............DE.............Jon Garvin................6’ 4”...........256

…...............DE.............Scott Patchan..........6’ 6”...........255

Kentucky...........total weight.........................................1232

…..............NG..............Quinton Bohanna....6’ 4”......…....361

…..............DT...............Calvin Taylor...........6’ 9”.............300

…..............DE................TJ Carter.................6’ 4”............287

…..............DE/LB.........Josh Paschal...........6’ 3”.......... 284

Which team actually had the better defense last year ? Comparative statements based on two games this season worthless IMO.

Last year total defense rankings - https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/years/2018-team-defense.html

#6 - Kentucky .......16.8 pts/game.............186.3 passing yds/game........146.8 rushing yds/game
#18 - Miami...........19.5 pts/game.............135.6 passing yds/game........143.1 rushing yds/game
#20 - Florida..........20.0 pts/game.............178.9 passing yds/game........159.8 rushing yds/game

Points, which are obviously the true measure of defensive efficiency/ability must be correlated with strength of schedule.

Unfortunately, there is no one right way to compute SOS; I looked at several sites; take your pick. All the sites offer info on how they compute SOS; SB nation very convoluted; ESPN has one also but could not find 2018.

There was reasonable agreement in these rankings for SOS.

........................TR..........SB..........WN
Florida............10..........14............20
Kentucky........14...........40............31
Miami.............43..........22............72

My guess would be KY has better rush defenders on the D line than Miami but dont have the DEs that can get after the QB as good as Miami.

Miami has better interior lineman, Kentucky has better pass rushers. Might sound unbelievable but Miami’s run defense is better than Bama, Clemson, and UGA right now and they’ve played two Power 5 teams their first two games where everyone else has played at least one cupcake.

Miami has 4 senior LBs. 3 of which would have been drafted last year had they chose to come out. Does KY have a single linebacker who is draft worthy?

As far as the lines go, it looks like as long as we stay away that huge mountain of a noseguard, we might have some possible running game. Just don't go straight up the middle I'm thinking because that one guy accounts for about a third of their entire line's mass.

He's almost as big as KY's QB Jared Lorenzen was.

Both teams have a pretty good front 7. I am sure we will run for more than that bad performance against Miami but doubt we can just line up and pound KYs line. They play a 280 pounder at that Jack position on many likely running downs. He can get some pressure on the QB also.

KY has been burned a few times against those pass heavy MAC teams with their DBs getting lost out there.

Well it goes without saying that you attack the opponent's weak spot. Everyone is looking at UF's running game to be lacking right now so they will want to line up and shut down our run game from the start. That just means there are going to be opportunities in the passing game. ATTACK THERE and keep going where you have the advantage. We had better not be doggedly trying to run the ball 30 or 40 times in the game just because we want to get the running game going if that's what they are focusing on stopping. Hit them through the air till they are willing to adjust and try to stop that, then go at them with the run.

Got to get some turnovers for the Gators here, too. I can't emphasize that enough. Good seasons are not made without them. They can help to alleviate growing pains we are having in some areas.

UF 10 sacks - scUM 1 sack
(N.C. 0 sacks vs scUM)

UF 5 sacks - UT-Martin 1 sack

Gators lead the nation in sacks with 15.
Gators 4 new starters on the OL have given up 2 sacks.
========

My guess is that to begin with, Dan/Hevesy most worried that the new OL would have trouble pass blocking for Franks, so that's what they concentrated on. Only 2 sacks (1+1) given up in the 2 games, so they have done well early in that area. Now they can spend a bit more time on the details of blocking for running the ball, so we should now begin to see improvements in that area.

The guy that they depend on to get the yards, can and does.

Perine 20 for 94 yds, 4.7 ypc, 1 TD

Franks 13 for 58 yds, 4.5 ypc, 1 TD

Jones 4 for 31 yds, 7.8 ypc, 1 TD

Pierce 8 for 30 yds, 3.7 ypc

Davis 6 for 21 yds, 3.5 ypc, 1 TD

Toney 4 for 9 yds, 2.2 ypc -- injured out

Wright 7 for 13 yds, 1.9 ypc -- FNG running behind the 2-3 OL
-----
Iverson 1 for 41 yds
Jacobs 1 for 15 yds (likely taking over Toney's plays)
~ Those 2 'one hit wonders' should see a few more carries going forward.
Townsend 1 for 6 yds - fake punt

Kentucky has the most delusional fanbase in the country.

Seriously?

Go to a UT Forum up to one hour prior to the Georgia State (not Southern) beat down and read about their plans for Atlanta!!!!!

Some in Orange are still calling for a two game winning streak, with Chattanooga and a trip to the Swamp.

I’m not joking.

When it comes to hoops they are up there, but I lived in Columbus and nobody is more delusional than ohio state fans.
Maybe, but the Choke-la-homo, Meatchicken, and Neutered Lame fans would give them a run for their money.... :D

I like their football fans. They have supported their teams well through the years despite their play at times. What more can you expect from a fan base!

Now Basketball is another topic...lol

Great analysis. The only thing I can add here in our defense is that Kentucky might have 4 or 5 players on their entire roster that Florida was recruiting. We should have far superior talent so this game will come down to quarterback play, turnovers and coaching
