Welcome to Week 0!!!!!!!!!!!!

Strange thing about Nebraska is that they also have no identity whatsoever on offense. For a guy who played there and is known for offense, you’d think Frost would know how to fix that.

sadgator is beginning to think that Nebraska will never be good again in his lifetime. That is amazing considering what they were in the mid-90’s. They should have stayed in the Big 12. The B1G has been disastrous for them…kinda like Miami joining the ACC.

Yep they don't get the athletes they used to get before their downfall from places like FL and Texas and the big time juiced line guys they used to have seem to be a thing of the past now. That 2001 team that got handled by Miami was definitely the last good team they had. Hard to see anything changing with them as at least 5 teams or so will clearly be higher in the pecking order in the Big 10 once USC gets there.

If I was involved with Nebraska I’d go back to what made them relevant to begin with and run the triple option/wishbone offense. They are trying to run an offense that they really can’t get the athletes for being where they are located geographically. Go back to getting the corn fed olineman and fullback and then just go get some athletes from Florida. Find a QB that is really athletic that isn’t maybe being recruited by the “big dogs” but somebody that can run. Now since the 80s & 90s you didn’t have as many schools coming into Florida to recruit like they do now but their only chance is to shoot their shot otherwise they aren’t coming back to relevance anyways. Know another problem they have is they just haven’t been that good on defense either.
In addition to that nobody is really running that type of offense much anymore these days so with that being said I don’t think opposing defenses are used to seeing it and it does take some time to prepare for and much more discipline is needed. Anyways that is what I would try at this point. Clearly what they have been doing since the Osborne days isn’t working so why not??

Players these days want to run offenses and defenses similar to what happens in the NFL so they are more prepared for the next level. Nebraska ran the wishbone at a time when college football was more than just the NFL's farm system. Players went to a college to play college ball because they loved college ball; now it's just basically an NFL internship to them. You think Nebraska is struggling to recruit now? Have them go to the wishbone. I mean, look at the disaster it created at Ga Tech.

No, if you aren't a service academy, it's nearly impossible to run that system any more.

Nebraska isn’t exactly sending kids to the NFL right now anyways. Finishing bowl less every year isnt exactly enticing to anybody.

What disaster did it create at Georgia Tech? Paul Johnson had 3 top 25 finishes while he was there and was named ACC coach of the year 3 times. You have to go back to 2000 and George 0’Leary for the last time GT finished with a top 25 season prior or after Paul Johnson.

I get what your saying about the NFL, etc but what they are doing now isn’t exactly working. What do they say about the definition of insanity?

Florida head coach Billy Napier will sit down for an interview with the program's new "Voice of the Gators", Sean Kelley, during a preseason special prior to their respective debuts in Gainesville. Monday at 3 p.m. ET on Bally Sports Florida, Channel 654 on Direct TV.

A good string of articles starting with the OL can be found here:

It could be about like GT success wise probably with some decent years in there. If they just got the real big O linemen again and on juice like that 95 team that ran all over us the Big 10 teams would be dreading the week they have to play them. Their D linemen look like they could use some juice also.

Nebraska is a victim of its history of wishbone/triple-option football. Not to mention, lack of recruiting as the southern U.S. no longer allows its top recruits to be lured to Lincoln any more. The Huskers raided Louisiana, Texas, Florida, and other southern-most states for 5-star talent. Since the SEC dominance, they've been the equivalent of South Carolina lately (actually the Chickens have more owl regularity than they do). The Spread-Option is their best out in terms of any chance at success; however, losing to Northwestern this past weekend shows how far this program has fallen on hard times. Scott Frost is way in over his head.

And his assistants as well.

...and guess where that QB was from

I watched that guy tear our high school team up in the playoffs on our home field if I remember right. I think it was that Bradenton powerhouse school if I remember correctly that was winning state titles like crazy around that time.

Frost was definitely given a longer leash due to him being an alum. He is now at the end of the leash. He doesn’t make it past this year.

Paco,

Like your thoughts !

When Paul Johnson was at Ga Tech they ran the triple option. He retired & Geoff Collins replaced him.

The triple-option is fading away, especially at the FBS level, but had its place in maximizing talent and shortening games for teams with recruiting disadvantages. Army and Navy still use it, for example. Johnson used that style as Georgia Southern’o win the I-AA national championship in 1986 and average 41 points per game. After returning to become head coach, Johnson led the Eagles to a 62-10 record.

It worked at Georgia Tech, too. After six years at Navy, winning at least eight games and going to a bowl game in each of his last five seasons, Johnson brought the triple threat to Atlanta in 2008. He was ACC coach of the year three times and beat Clemson four times in his first five years.

He was at Ga Tech 11 seasons, and in 6 of those seasons won 7 games or less. And remember, this is the ACC, the powder puff league.

Look, there is a trickle down effect here. The pros don't use it, so colleges stay away from it because top recruits want to move up as NFL-ready as possible. Because colleges don't use it, high schools have moved away from it because it puts their kids at a disadvantage in getting scholarships because they haven't been trained in a collegiate-style offense. And so on down to pee wee.

If Nebraska were to go to it, they would basically saying they are now on the same level as Army, Navy, and Georgia Southern. A school of lesser talent trying to win games through opponents unfamiliarity with their system.

Also, does anyone here understand why the triple option started fading after the 1970's? Because college football moved the hashmarks in. They used to be so wide that the triple option gave teams 3/4 of the field on the wide side, which was too much space for opponents to defend successfully on a consistent basis. Do you all realize Bama used to run the triple option? And Oklahoma? And Florida? Lots of teams ran it until they moved in the hashmarks, then it became much less effective.

There are reasons nobody runs the wishbone any more, except a few oddball teams.

LG89,

Isn't that where Nebraska is now ?

But does anyone think Frost survives after this year ?
