I will admit Russia had thoughts about that Donbass area due to the population there and the resources in the land there but it was definitely Ukraine shelling the eastern part of the country for years and the NATO saber rattling that had Russia roll in there big time when they did.
I agree with author that it was weakness not aggression or a nefarious conspiracy by NATO that Putin discovered.
