Cutcliffe called the officials out for it, what is the point of having replay if all humans do is mess up every call no matter what? It's baffling how ignorant human beings are

you look at any picture and it will show the guys knee was down on the last play

If you think instant replay is a complete disaster, what about the football selection committee? We got rid of the BCS and in the process we got rid of the computers which threw out all bias and voted without prejudice or passion. Something is wrong and it's not getting any better in this sport on a year to year basis.

If I could change ONE thing in this game today, it would be to remove that bullshit targeting penalty. It's football, the goal is to HIT other people. It's our modern equivalent of gladiatorial combat in an arena. Stop treating it like a damn knitting circle.

Miami stopped them at the goal line, they called it a DT

the play wouldnt have happened if the refs didnt mess up to begin with

you didnt actually watch the game, miami got screwed for most of it

please talk when you have a clue

Oh I saw it, and you are just illustrating the point about officiating. That's the "clue"

Not to mention the dozens of blocks in the back. ..
There were at least three. There was a flag on the field for a block in the back. During replay, the officials announced the flag was for a block in the back. The officials reversed the flag, seemingly from the replay, which is against the rules. Also, a 12th Miami player runs onto the field, without a helmet, before the play is over. The officials let that one go too.

Every since the swindle in the swamp, I could never decide if ACC officials were corrupt or incompetent. I think they are both. They make SEC officials seem competent.

So the Miami fan CONFIRMS the ACC officials are terrible and likely blew everything we are discussing on that last play.

Had the UM fans claimed that the refs were very competent and reffed the whole game well, their defense of the last play would hold more water.

"Makeup calls" don't exist in the rulebook as far as I know. Can anyone provide a link?

Well it's just been released that the ACC is suspending not only the on field referee crew, but the two replay officials as well pending investigation, as they relate to 4 grossly negligent blown calls all on that one final play.

ACC ANNOUNCES OFFICIATING SUSPENSIONS FOLLOWING THE MIAMI AT DUKE FOOTBALL GAME
Posted: 28 minutes ago - Updated: 24 minutes ago

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Atlantic Coast Conference has announced the suspension of the on-field officiating crew as well as the replay official and communicator following the Miami at Duke game on Saturday, October 31.

The announcement follows the league’s weekly review of game footage, as well as reports and interviews with officials and administrators.

The series of errors during the final play of the game will result in the suspension of the entire crew for two ACC games.

The errors that occurred during the last play of the game are:

  • The replay official erred in not overturning the ruling on the field that the Miami player had released the ball prior to his knee being down. If called, this would have ended the game.
  • The on-field officials erred by failing to penalize Miami for an illegal block in the back at the Miami 16-yard line. If called, the ball would have been placed at the Miami 8-yard line and the game would have been extended for an untimed down.
  • A block in the back foul was called at the Duke 26-yard line. After the officials conferred, which is appropriate, they correctly determined that the block was from the side, which resulted in the flag being picked up. The replay official was not involved in the decision to pick up the flag; however, the referee did not effectively manage communication and properly explain why the flag was picked up.
  • In addition, the on-field crew failed to penalize a Miami player for leaving the bench area and entering the field prior to the end of the play. This foul would not have negated the touchdown because it would have been enforced as a dead ball foul.
“The quality of our officiating program is of the highest importance to the league and its schools, and the last play of the game was not handled appropriately,” said ACC Commissioner John Swofford. “Officiating is an extraordinarily difficult job but our players, coaches, programs and fans deserve the best that can be offered. We will continue to strive to meet that standard.”

4 screw up on 1 play.

Reminds me of the 2003 FSU game in the Swamp. Utter robbery.

Unfortunately they don't talk about the other calls they got wrong. The 23-5 differential in penalties was apalling and the lack of camera on goal line stooped seeing the Duke QB being stopped short of goal line

I read where there were several bad calls against Miami earlier in the game.

ACC officials make SEC officials look competent.

Just another example that the ACC is a clown football conference. That is why FSU is so suited for it.

23-5 differential is probably similar to the '91 Cotton Bowl against Texas. Dont remember many Canes complaining about it....if anything reveling in it would be a more accurate description of Cane reaction.

I don't know about any other plays in the game where the refs blew it one way or the other but just looking at still shots and video replay of the last play, Duke was totally robbed. There was 1. a flagrant block in the back, 2. the guy's knee was 100% down with ball in hand, 3. they used replay to reverse the flag they threw which you can't do, AND 4. there was a 12th UM player running onto the field with his helmet off before the guy crosses the goal line. Go to Duke's board to see the still shots and video.

Amazing.

While the ACC said there is no mechanism in place to reverse an out come. That statement there should be enough to indicate there should be one.

I do not think any conference has such a mechanism in place. But they should

I dunno, that's some scary chit...where do you draw the line? Obviously the last play was bullspit, but if they had gotten the call right before, Duke doesn't get a TD, and that play never happens....

One draws the line on the last play of the game. If an incorrect call on the last play of the game resulted in the wrong team winning, then it should be reversed. It has to be an absolute reversal though. Like being down. Or change of possession in the end zone. Anything where if the call is reversed, the outcome would change.

That is dangerous. The beauty of college football is that stuff like this happens and you have to live with it. You can't have uncertainty as to outcomes...the cycle would be never ending with appeals and crap. At least we have replay now. Remember how bad it was only a few years ago when we didn't?!? That should be good enough. These guys just blew it.

I agree. For glaring technical errors, it would be good to have a way to fix insanely wrong mistakes. I think the problem is the remedy. Unless the reversal of the mistake clearly identifies a new winner...would we have to get the teams back together to replay one play? It's why being very careful on game day is so critical.

Do you remember the Missouri / Colorado "5th down" controversy in 1990? Near the end of the game, the chain gang failed to flip the down marker after a play which resulted in an extra down for Colorado. Should have been Missouri's ball and the game would have ended. Colorado ran a fifth play of the series and scored the winning TD as time expired. The Big 8 acknowledged the mistake but said it wasn't something fixable once the game was over. It was a huge deal because Colorado would have lost and that probably would have prevented them from sharing a split poll National Championship with Georgia Tech that year.

But again, the call before, that gave Duke the TD could b equally wrong, so if reversed, then UM would be screwed....

Yeah, but there was still time left after the Duke score. How would you fix that after the game? Go back and replay the game from that point? Can't do it.

That's the whole point, that is why you cannot change the outcome after the game at all....all you can do is hold those got calls wrong accountable.

I agree. A reversal could happen, imo, only if it did not require the teams getting back together for any reasons. Like the Miami player knee being down, for one example.
