GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- With National Signing Day always comes drama, and there's been no shortage of it today in the SEC.
Arkansas coach
Bret Bielema made waves this afternoon when he made a comment on ESPN that seemed to take a shot at both Ole Miss and Florida.
"Now you got a couple teams like Florida, kind of the new Ole Miss, they are doing some things in recruiting that just kind of shocks you a little bit, but you gotta beat everybody on every day," Bielema said.
With Ole Miss currently under investigation by the NCAA, the subtle undertone seemed clear enough. Bielema did his best to quickly backpedal, saying on radio that he was trying to pay a compliment to Florida.
If he was, it certainly didn't sound like McElwain took it that way.
"Well, I kind of get a kick out of it a little bit, because obviously this guy doesn't know who I am," McElwain said. "I sure as heck don't know who he is. I'm not even sure we really ran into him on the recruiting trail."
Florida did, however, snag a couple of recruits away from Arkansas. First, Florida landed a pledge from the nation's No. 2 wide receiver, Tyrie Cleveland, who was also considering Arkansas. Then, shortly after Bielema's comments aired, the Gators flipped Razorbacks cornerback commitment Joseph Putu.
So some angst on Bielema's end is understandable. Still, McElwain made sure to clear the air -- and Bielema's seeming implication -- in no uncertain terms.
"I know what I'm all about, and I know what the University of Florida is all about," McElwain said. "I think if you were to poll anybody in college football, I think they'd know that Mac does it right. I have no idea what this guy was talking about, to be honest."
Regardless, it's an interesting storyline on a signing day that hasn't been boring by any stretch of the imagination.
And it'll certainly make that November 5 date with Arkansas a little more highly anticipated for Florida fans.
"It'll give you something to write about, I guess," McElwain said. "Good for you guys."
