GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- With National Signing Day always comes drama, and there's been no shortage of it today in the SEC.

Arkansas coach Bret Bielema made waves this afternoon when he made a comment on ESPN that seemed to take a shot at both Ole Miss and Florida.

"Now you got a couple teams like Florida, kind of the new Ole Miss, they are doing some things in recruiting that just kind of shocks you a little bit, but you gotta beat everybody on every day," Bielema said.

With Ole Miss currently under investigation by the NCAA, the subtle undertone seemed clear enough. Bielema did his best to quickly backpedal, saying on radio that he was trying to pay a compliment to Florida.

If he was, it certainly didn't sound like McElwain took it that way.

"Well, I kind of get a kick out of it a little bit, because obviously this guy doesn't know who I am," McElwain said. "I sure as heck don't know who he is. I'm not even sure we really ran into him on the recruiting trail."

Florida did, however, snag a couple of recruits away from Arkansas. First, Florida landed a pledge from the nation's No. 2 wide receiver, Tyrie Cleveland, who was also considering Arkansas. Then, shortly after Bielema's comments aired, the Gators flipped Razorbacks cornerback commitment Joseph Putu.

So some angst on Bielema's end is understandable. Still, McElwain made sure to clear the air -- and Bielema's seeming implication -- in no uncertain terms.

"I know what I'm all about, and I know what the University of Florida is all about," McElwain said. "I think if you were to poll anybody in college football, I think they'd know that Mac does it right. I have no idea what this guy was talking about, to be honest."

Regardless, it's an interesting storyline on a signing day that hasn't been boring by any stretch of the imagination.

And it'll certainly make that November 5 date with Arkansas a little more highly anticipated for Florida fans.

"It'll give you something to write about, I guess," McElwain said. "Good for you guys."

We are 13th now and may still be dropping if you look at the team's closely behind us.Not the end of the world by obviously not good either. No way to spin that.

Well actually I spoke too soon. We're 17th now with the potential to finish outside the top 20. Would mark the lowest ranked non-transition class in modern UF history.

Recruiting rankings really are meaningless. Some great classes can be ranked quite low.
Fans need to ask themselves:
1. Did we fill needs?
2. Did we get 3-4 elite players? and finally
3. How did the number of elite players stack up against the primary competitors?

You guys know your roster better than most, but I would be most concerned about the line of scrimmage. There has been OL problems at UF for several years and not signing a DT makes you wonder.

Relax, BONG, Rivals is only counting 19 of our signees right now. (Not sure why)

I guess they have us at 18th now. Not sure if they're still only counting 19 like Gray said.

I think it's cool to have all the stars these teams get but we haven't really had them for awhile now and obviously we still beat these teams yearly so it's nice to have coaches that can coach and a few QB's to pick from that can actually probably complete passes. I've always been a much bigger believer in the developmental coaches than star power, you obviously need just enough of both to win Championships but call me crazy.. Im not sitting here panicking. I want to see this offense over the next two years, we got good players guys.

As for the Mus and Mac recruiting talk, I think we are seeing that Mus stayed too long.

We are 14...so did that mark the lowest ranked modern UF non-transition? I remember some similar... That produced some good athletes. Please don't get me to answer who because my memory bank needs the casche cleared from time to time.

I would like to point out though that Gardner is the first 4 star after the fives

So had he been a 5, this class might be viewed differently simply because of that.

I think so. All the ones I could find around that mark were transition classes. I had thought we finished around 12 in 13' after we went 4-8 but that class finished 7th.

What is so funny about all the angst about rankings, is this essentially the same class we had when we were a top ten class. Minus two player that probably do not qualify and plus two others.

Not sure I see reasons for all the panic.

So then when is it ok to be worried? To start the year, whenever anyone pointed out concerns we were shouted down with 'it's a top 5 class!' even though that was only the case because of our numbers. We were all gonna look stupid on signing day we were told. Then the argument shifted to 'well it's a top 6 class!' and then 'it's a top 10 class!' and now it's that we filled needs (despite us missing on many of our top targets throughout the cycle) or that now rankings don't matter. The goal posts about what 'success' is keeps moving.

Plus if you're point is true about Manuel not qualifying, it's still a failure on the staffs end. So they recruited ONE guy for a critical position of need and a guy who apparently had no chance to qualify at that? What, did they just get his transcript yesterday night? And I'm not even high on Manuel anyway, but all these reasons being given seem like convenient justifications. Same with someone like Robinson. He was our #2 corner with no backup plan. So if he had grade issues why weren't there backups? All that seems like poor planning to me. But I'm a negative nelly though so please disregard all that.

I'm not even sure why it is being disscussed anymore. We are never ever going to win another game again! We can't coach, we can't recruit, we can't do anything right. I'm not even sure it is worth following the program anymore.

Oh look Paco with another strawman! The funny thing is during the Michigan game you made the declaration that this staff was barely better than the last and would never win anything significant. No one else to date has damned the staff with that fate. Now you're talking down to people about questioning this class? Really? You have zero room to say anything after that tirade you went on. Oh lemme guess you changed your mind and am deciding to toe the company line now? Or are you the only one allowed to question anything? Please let us know so we can all be as good of a fan as you. You know, the same person who declared the staff a failure in the Michigan game thread.

I never said the staff was barely better than the last staff. This staff is much much better than Muschamp and staff. Much better on the field and off the field. I did say I was displeased with how the bowl game went and that I was expecting more. It doesn't mean that this staff can't be successful either and the program is finished. It is also my opinion this team would have looked much much better with Grier at QB the last part of the season than with Harris and we would have fared much better as well and been more competitive.

Listen in general at least many posters on this board are "never happy" about anything that happens. Something good happens and many posters on this board still try and find something negative about it. That's a fact. Something bad happens and it really gets blown out of proportion badly. We have some posters that want to fire McElwain already. It's actually gotten so bad it has become comical.

I see just as many people complaining about a game UF wins then a game in which we lose. It really is mind boggling. That is why I say nobody suffers like UF fans.

So please save me the "strawman" talk. That word has been overused now.

Our star rankings may not be elite, but I really like how needs were filled. Really disappointed to see Manuel flip, and was I literally praying (haven't done that since I was a kid...lol) for Simpson to pick the Good Guys...oh well.

I would much rather have a 14th ranked class that addresses team needs, than I would a 3rd ranked class with 14 recruits at the same damn position like the Ole Zooker routinely had.
