SEC Exploring 9-Game CFB Conference Schedule amid Addition of Texas, Oklahoma
SEC spring meeting - Miramar Beach, Florida, from
May 30th to May 31st, 2023.
Biggest issues will be alignment & scheduling.
The SEC is considering a "temporary eight-game conference schedule" in the 2024 football season when Texas and Oklahoma join the conference that would "at least for one year, preserve both primary and secondary rivalries," according to
Ross Dellenger of SI.com.
But if ESPN is willing to pay additional money in its contract with the SEC for a ninth game on the schedule, it's likely the conference would move in that direction.
Texas and Oklahoma will be on hand to help figure out which three opponents each team should play annually.1 The SEC commissioner Greg Sankey has preferred more consensus before a decision is made, and if enough money from ESPN isn't forthcoming, some of the nine-game votes may switch back to eight
Coaches and administrators debated eight- and nine-game schedule formats a year ago. No vote occurred.
The schedule debate centers on whether to stick with an eight-game conference schedule or increase to nine. In either schedule format, teams will play every other SEC member at a minimum of once every two years.
In the eight-game format, each team will have one fixed rival, plus seven rotating opponents. With nine games, each team will have three fixed rivals, plus six rotating opponents.
Kentucky and South Carolina are among the schools on record favoring staying with eight SEC games. Florida, LSU and Texas A&M are among those favoring nine.
Sports Illustrated reported that Nick Saban told the publication Alabama favors sticking with eight conference games, a pivot from his years-long pandering for a ninth conference game. Saban’s stated hang-up with the nine-game format revolved around Alabama’s earmarked rivals being Auburn, LSU and Tennessee.
Maybe Saban pissed off the SEC Powers that be; maybe it's payback for all those McDonald's Bags.
All his previous talk & now he waffles - only problem Coaches & ADs won't be the ones voting.
LOL
LSU & Tennessee both on the rise; both of them beat Saban & Bama.
Saban wants to drop LSU & Tennessee & play Vandy twice a year.

Alabama coach
Nick Saban is in favor of the eight-game model, he told
Sports Illustrated during an interview in March. The model provides a more “balanced” format as opposed to the nine-game format, which calls for each team to have three permanent opponents. Saban took issue with the three permanent opponents the SEC suggested for Alabama (Tennessee, Auburn and LSU). In choosing three permanent opponents for each team, the SEC is using historic rivalries, geography and a 10-year success metric. Based on conversations with those within the league,
SI projected each team’s three permanents.
One downside of sticking with eight conference games would be the sacrifice of some longstanding annual secondary rivalries, like Alabama-Tennessee and Auburn-Georgia.

Several months ago,
we took our best guess at the three permanent opponents for each team. We based these on three things: (1) primary and secondary rivalries; (2) geography; and (3) creating as much equity as possible.
