Gators to Hire Ron Roberts as LB Coach, Co-Defensive Coordinator ?

To Quote the nurse in Doc Hollywood: "A lot of people, but not me." 😉

But just for fun, let's say that 'a lot of people' but not you, are correct.

Does that mean that it will only be rsFr Brown and WAY-EARLY Fr Simmons will be competing with each other for the 2023 starting job at Fall practice? (the cast is long and the bait is in the water)

Simmons or Brown wont be competing for the starting job in camp. Brown probably remains 3rd string and might get his chance this season if things get pretty bad. Unless Brown shows something in 2023 I think he will have a hard time being the starter in 2024 or after. It will be interesting to see how all this plays out. Either Miller or Mertz or possibly both will be gone after 2023 most likely.

Try starting that kind of claim with an (I THINK) for a change....

Miller should already be gone, and if Mertz is the starter I might just skip 2023 entirely....

I'll leave what Brown should do up to him at this point.... (I'm giving it a break for the good of,,,???)

Fever,

I have noted your thoughts on a 1 yr QB rental for 2024 & have no problem with it.

Though I doubt we will find boosters willing to pony up to the same extent as Bama, UGA, Tenn, & TAMU, IMO, our problems with NIL$$$ will be solved enough to afford a decent QB - if NIL$$$ is the only concern.

I have to think that a QB of that caliber will have his heart & soul fixed on an NFL career - i.e. Sam Hartman transfers from Wake Forest to ND.

IMO, we had no chance for Hartman even if we had gobs of NIL$$$.
Our team wasn't then & isn't now, good enough to to get him into the CFP & spotlight him strongly enough to get him drafted in the NFL 1st round.

As we say in Mathematics - the NIL$$$ is NECESSARY
BUT
NOT SUFFICIENT !

Does Anyone know what to expect from Florida in 2023 ?

On3’s J.D. PicKell unveiled his list of teams that will make headlines in 2023. And the SEC’s Florida Gators sit atop that list. As the college football expert explained, he believes the Gators will be a headline team this year because nobody knows what to expect from them.

“Look no further than Gainesville, FL,” said PicKell. “Billy Napier and company, what are they going to be? And the reality is nobody has any idea, because you have a very small sample size of what Billy Napier and company have been so far.

You’ve got 13 games. New DC, a new quarterback, (and) more depth, supposedly. Vegas has them at 5.5 wins.”

“I’ve said this for the duration of the offseason; it’s okay to not know about Florida. But the fact of the matter is they’re in the SEC. They’re a very visible brand. You got a coach going into year two, (and) you got a transfer portal quarterback.

So nobody is going to have a soft opinion on Florida. They’re going to lean one way or the other pretty drastically. It’s okay to not know about them, but we’re gonna know about them here pretty quickly.

I think within that first six games this season, we’ll know what we’re going to get from Florida.”

Yes he said Brown still had a lot to learn before this coming season. That tells me he has no shot barring an injury to someone to be higher than #3 starting the season. He must be putting in the work during his free time on the baseball team though as he passed walk-on Broward All-Star Kyle Engel on the depth chart.

Note: Kyle Engel is the only QB on the Gator roster to play QB in a game against an SEC opponent.

I dont see drastic opinions from the so called experts out there. Almost all of them are pegging us at 5-7 to 7-5 due to our QB situation.

Tebow,

Your Dad is a big Bama fan.
You, having better sense, are a Gator Fan ! LOL

Please ask your Dad how he would feel about a Black Bama Jersey ?

Would he buy one ? Would he wear it to a Bama home game ?

If, unannounced, you gave your Dad a Black Bama Jersey for his Birthday or Christmas - how would he react ?

2. UGA will now flip WR Jeremiah Smith from Ohio State.

Mike Farrell’s take: FICTION

They have a better chance now with Raiola on board, as Smith committed to Ohio State when Raiola was the Buckeyes QB of the future. There’s a connection there. But it’s not as big as the connection between Smith and OSU OC Brian Hartline and the way the Buckeyes produce WRs. I think he sticks in the end.

https://mikefarrellsports.com/fact-...s-raiola-jeremiah-smith-van-buren-to-maryland

Jeremiah didn't commit to UGA during their Scavenger Hunt Weekend; CBN & Lagway will have their chance to recruit him June 2nd.
Hoping for the best.

4* edge rusher Jordan Ross names top schools

Pass rusher Jordan Ross is close to being ranked a five-star recruit. Ross is ranked as the No. 38 recruit in the nation, per the 247Sports composite.

Ross plays for Vestavia Hills High School (Alabama). Vestavia Hills is located south of Birmingham.

Ross is currently a four-star recruit. He’s the fifth-ranked edge rusher in the country and the fourth-ranked recruit in Alabama.

Ross’ top schools are Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, Oregon, USC, LSU and Texas. Georgia and Tennessee were two of the programs to show early interest in Jordan Ross.

The 6-foot-5, 215-pound pass rusher also plays basketball. Ross has good closing speed, quick acceleration and frequently pressures opposing quarterbacks. The four-star pass rusher should continue to improve his strength. Ross is good at quickly diagnosing plays.

SEC Exploring 9-Game CFB Conference Schedule amid Addition of Texas, Oklahoma

SEC spring meeting - Miramar Beach, Florida, from May 30th to May 31st, 2023.

Biggest issues will be alignment & scheduling.

The SEC is considering a "temporary eight-game conference schedule" in the 2024 football season when Texas and Oklahoma join the conference that would "at least for one year, preserve both primary and secondary rivalries," according to Ross Dellenger of SI.com.

But if ESPN is willing to pay additional money in its contract with the SEC for a ninth game on the schedule, it's likely the conference would move in that direction.

Texas and Oklahoma will be on hand to help figure out which three opponents each team should play annually.1 The SEC commissioner Greg Sankey has preferred more consensus before a decision is made, and if enough money from ESPN isn't forthcoming, some of the nine-game votes may switch back to eight

Coaches and administrators debated eight- and nine-game schedule formats a year ago. No vote occurred.

The schedule debate centers on whether to stick with an eight-game conference schedule or increase to nine. In either schedule format, teams will play every other SEC member at a minimum of once every two years.

In the eight-game format, each team will have one fixed rival, plus seven rotating opponents. With nine games, each team will have three fixed rivals, plus six rotating opponents.

Kentucky and South Carolina are among the schools on record favoring staying with eight SEC games. Florida, LSU and Texas A&M are among those favoring nine.

Sports Illustrated reported that Nick Saban told the publication Alabama favors sticking with eight conference games, a pivot from his years-long pandering for a ninth conference game. Saban’s stated hang-up with the nine-game format revolved around Alabama’s earmarked rivals being Auburn, LSU and Tennessee.

Maybe Saban pissed off the SEC Powers that be; maybe it's payback for all those McDonald's Bags.
All his previous talk & now he waffles - only problem Coaches & ADs won't be the ones voting.
LOL

LSU & Tennessee both on the rise; both of them beat Saban & Bama.
Saban wants to drop LSU & Tennessee & play Vandy twice a year.

FROM SI https://www.si.com/college/2023/04/28/sec-deciding-between-eight-and-nine-game-formats-for-football

Alabama coach Nick Saban is in favor of the eight-game model, he told Sports Illustrated during an interview in March. The model provides a more “balanced” format as opposed to the nine-game format, which calls for each team to have three permanent opponents. Saban took issue with the three permanent opponents the SEC suggested for Alabama (Tennessee, Auburn and LSU). In choosing three permanent opponents for each team, the SEC is using historic rivalries, geography and a 10-year success metric. Based on conversations with those within the league, SI projected each team’s three permanents.

One downside of sticking with eight conference games would be the sacrifice of some longstanding annual secondary rivalries, like Alabama-Tennessee and Auburn-Georgia.

Our June 2nd “official” recruiting weekend may just be the best recruiting weekend in UF history when just basing it on talent alone. Yes even better than Meyer. With that being said my 1 concern is when you bring in that much talent they all want to be “the guy” and get all the attention. That is going to be hard to do next weekend.

I think the only thing that would keep it at 8 games is if ESPN enforced the current deal concerning the increase for adding teams. The SEC will want a better deal for 9 games.

Fever,

Everything I have read agrees with you.

Mr. CFB: Why These Could Be The Most Consequential SEC Spring Meetings--Ever

Conference will discuss NIL, transfer portal, scheduling models, playoff expansion, Saban-Fisher dust-up.

Starts Today - Tuesday May 30th

It used to be the biggest news coming out of Destin was how much revenue was being shared by the member schools.

Not Any More.

Now that news is released well before Destin. For the 2020-21 fiscal year the SEC shared $777.8 million or about $54.8 million per school. By contrast the SEC shared $27.7 million in 1992.

https://www.si.com/college/tmg/tony-barnhart/sec-spring-meetings

I think Wilson may have started as a true freshman if he was here for the Spring.
Fever,

You are probably right.

Wilson & the last three 2023 recruits enrolled Monday.

Wilson will be here to welcome JEREMIAH SMITH, D J Lagway, & all the other commits & targets for the huge June 2nd recruiting weekend.

Between the SEC Meetings & this recruiting weekend, should be a great time to talk about CFB & Gator football.

8 or 9 games? SEC commish has preference in football schedule debate

"Money follows, it doesn't lead. That's the same here," Sankey said. "... When all you do is chase money, you make really bad decisions.

NOTE

The permanent opponents that have been thrown about for the 9 game schedule are not "cut in stone."

Until they adapt a 9 game schedule & the SEC Commissioner's office publishes them they are only MEDIA guesswork.

The SEC requires a simple majority with a vote of 8-6 to adopt legislation. Incoming SEC members Oklahoma and Texas do not have a vote, though both have communicated their preference to adopt a nine-game model, sources tell 247Sports.

Money is also a concern. The assumption is the SEC figures to earn more cash from media partner ESPN should the league expand to a nine-game conference schedule but ESPN has not communicated how much more money it is willing to pay for the additional inventory, sources tell 247Sports.

In recent months, ESPN has undergone massive layoffs and cutbacks as media companies face financial scrutiny and streamers hemorrhage money.

Also important are the ancillary rivalry games, which would be played every other year in the eight-game model rather than every year under the nine-game model.

Yearly rivalry games between Alabama and Tennessee, Georgia and Auburn, and Florida and Tennessee would be lost. The long-awaited renewal of the Texas-Texas A&M rivalry would happen in 2024 or 2025 and then would reoccur every other year.

Schools also must navigate difficult and time-sensitive scheduling decisions with their non-conference games.

Twelve SEC schools will need to reschedule or cancel as many as 38 non-conference games spanning through 2037 if a nine-game format is adopted.

Only four of the conference's 16 members (Auburn, LSU, Oklahoma and Texas) have cleared their schedules for nine conference games beginning in 2024. The remaining 12 schools have scheduled four non-conference games in 2024, and nine schools are booked until 2026.

More Thoughts on 8 vs 9 Game SEC Schedule

Eight game SEC schedule in Gators best interest

by Benjamin Henderson

The SEC as a whole is idiotic for wanting to stick with eight conference games instead of nine potentially. They are going to have Texas and Texas A&M in the same conference and not guarantee those two play each other every year.

And it does mean that Florida has its annual game against Tennesee in danger of not being played.

That’s idiotic too.

But Florida has two unique factors going for it that make an eight-game conference schedule make more sense than a nine-game schedule:

  • The World’s Largest (gathering of individuals that happen to drink a particular type of beverage while having a) Party
  • Florida State
https://hailfloridahail.com/2023/05...eight-game-sec-schedule-gators-best-interest/

Gators make the top five for versatile DT

Amaris Williams, a DT from Clinton, North Carolina, recently named his top five schools, and the Gators made the cut.

Other finalists include Tennessee, Penn State, North Carolina State, and Georgia.

Williams should probably be classed as an athlete as he also plays TE & RB.

The networks will determine what happens but a lot of big rivalry games are lost as every year games with an 8 game schedule. Bama - Tenn, Auburn - GA etc. It doesnt affect us much however as Tenn was mostly a big game because both teams were good for quite few years there and we might not even keep them every year in a 9 game schedule.

Priority CB Target Zavier Mincey Releases Top 10

One of Florida's top cornerback targets, Zavier Mincey, labels 10 contenders for his services heading into the summer.

Zavier Mincey, holding offers from 30 Division-I programs, has a wealth of collegiate options to choose from while weighing his football future.

On Tuesday, the Mainland High defensive back made a crucial step toward said future as he narrowed his focus to ten schools. Mincey named the Florida Gators alongside Alabama, Colorado, Florida State, Miami, Ole Miss, Penn State, Tennessee, Texas A&M and UCF as the teams moving forward in his recruitment process.

Looks like Graham is the Guy moving forward

Onward and upward with 'Talking Season.' (not a response to TT, but instead to the articles content)

Billy now says that Wis xfer-in Mertz is the (38 TD's, 26 Int, 49 sacks) guy,,, yeah, yeah, yeah.... 🙄

But not that long ago, he said that tOSU xfer-in Miller was a real prize and that he was 'The Guy,' but how'd that work out for him/them? (3-30)

Good thing they got rid of that Mullen / 2-star Trask combo kind of offense, cause just look what Billy accomplished with only a #4 NFL draft pick QB, and 2 top RB's, behind an experienced OL that put a RG and LT, plus a WR in the NFL after last season...

Going on 2 years of the new HC and his bloated 48 person staff with top notch recruiting have gotten the Gators Mertz-Miller & bench warmer Brown.

While that 3-5, 6-7, 3-30 1st year team performance + QB recruiting got Billy a $100,000.00 a year raise to his 7 Mil/Yr salary, so he/they must me doing a fabulous job so far....
Mar-vel-ous..... 🤓
=====

I guess that Mertz has already proven, after his 4 years of top quality experience, that he's better at handing the ball off to a RB than Miller is, and that's something that a rsFr like Brown certainly could not have learned in this short period of time with that staff.... 🙄
=====

Articles most important quote imo; -- "regardless of my opinion, federal oversight is the answer to this question." 😲
Yeah Billy, because the Fed's have done such a great/unbiased job at everything else lately.... 😠

"Are we moving too far away from the Collegiate Model?"

That's long gone now. College used to be about education, with sports used to help in the physical development transition from teenage to adulthood. IMO, it has evolved into a 'free to them,' NFL farm feeder, and as a big time money maker for the Admin's at Woke Socialist-U's, with education as a distant consideration, mostly used as just an excuse really.

Concerns??? The only real concern it to NOT get caught with gambling, drugs, theft, plagiarism, sex/rape, etc.

The student/ATHLETE's morality and code of honor is either brought with them when they arrive, or it's pretty much non-existent. Keeping a law firm on retainer is now required....

Harsh from the iG? Yeah maybe, but I've never been good at being a butt-kisser for any that I see as authoritarian tyrants, or with being PC in general, and after-all, it is 'Talking Season.' ---- So anyone can have at either me, or at the ideas and opinions that I've expressed....

Thank God for our mutual and all inclusive God-given inalienable Freedoms, and for the guarantees that the Founding Fathers provided to themselves and to future generations, with the conditions and restrictions that they placed on any and ALL PUBLIC SERVANT Govt. officials with the Constitution. With a special Memorial Day thank you to the brave and honorable members of our military that have fought and sometimes died, to help keep America FREE.

Tebow,

No surprise there,

Think our OL will be decent & our RBs are good.

Just have to hope Mertz comes through in the short to medium passing game.

Or better yet, that CBN hires a competent OC/QB's coach that could prepare Brown for the QB-dt job during Fall practice.... 🤓 (as I've said JfJ, hope springs eternal)
