Gator's 2024-25 Recruiting / Portal

Since Nov. 17, here are all the commitments that Florida landed:

  • 3-star OL Daniel Pierre Louis
  • 3-star OL Jahari Medlock
  • 3-star WR Muizz Tounkara
  • 3-star DL Stephon Shivers
  • 3-star RB Byron Louis
  • 3-star QB Tramell Jones Jr.
  • 4-star DL Joseph Mbatchou
  • 4-star LB Ty Jackson
  • 4-star OL Tavaris Dice
  • 4-star S Hylton Stubbs
  • 4-star Edge Jayden Woods
And for what it’s worth, Stubbs flipped from Miami to Florida on Monday while Mbatchou was originally a Florida commit who then committed to Texas before going back to the Gators 8 days later.

As it stands, that’s 11 commitments in the past 3 weeks following the vote of confidence that Napier got that he’ll be back in 2025. Do those commitments mean that Napier will be able to keep his job beyond 2025? Not necessarily. It’s significant because it shows that there’s optimism that Napier can have a long-term future in Gainesville. Winning 3 consecutive games to close the regular season might’ve impacted that vibe.

What’s clear is that for the first time in a long time, Florida might finally have some momentum.

Without Lagway taking over and the Ole Miss and LSU wins this class would have been pretty bad.

We still may add another player or two to this signing class. But we still need to pick up several high quality players via the transfer portal to make next year's team a real challenger, IMO.

Need a good starting level OT, DT and at least one top notch receiver to replace Badger. Hopefully we get lucky on the WR front like the last 2 seasons. I hope we get proven power 4 linemen as so many of the group of 5 and FCS hyped linemen have not panned out in the portal when moving up.

The NCAA has set a hard count for rosters at 105 players, meaning Florida will be without around 30 players next season not including graduating seniors and transfer departures, so the Florida Gators are set to lose more than they gain through the NCAA Transfer Portal when it opens on Dec. 9.

Per SEC rules, schools will follow the NCAA's roster limit of 105 players, but schools will be forced to stay at 85 scholarships. Meaning, the Gators will be allowed 20 walk-ons, but it will still have to see many on the current roster depart.

By Gators Illustrated's most-recent count (Dec. 5, 2024), Florida has 123 total players left on the roster, 85 of which are either already on or will likely be on scholarship. These numbers include Wednesday's signees and those remaining on the roster who still have collegiate eligibility. (continues at the link)

Here's a breakdown of all of Florida's departures and additions. All transfer portal news can be read on the recruiting page of the site. This story will be updated as more announcements are made.

We have been carrying more than 105? When did that start and it's crazy there is complaints about that number. Hard to belive there is any reason you would need more than 85 scholarships plus 20 walk ons.

The thing is, with NIL walk-ons are effectively a thing of the past. They may not get a scholarship, but the schools can just up their NIL deal by the cost of tuition, etc.

Where is the Gator RB room for 2025 currently sitting at?

Ja'Kobi Jackson 5-10.5 209 rsSr - 12-G, 83 for 459 Yds, 5.4 ypc, 7 TD's, L-20
Treyaun Webb 5-11 211 rsSo - 4-G injured-redshirt?, 21 for 98 Yds, 4.4 ypc, 1 TD, L-14

Looks like the 'Thunder & Lightening' replacements or additions to me....

#17 RB Byron Louis 5-11 200 Fr **** Natl. 231 0.9168
Offers: UF-UGA-UA-AU-OK-UK-MS-TN-aTM
FSU-scUM-UCF-USF--tOSU-USC-PSU-Mich-Ind-Wis-Colo,,, etc.
.A potential workhorse between the tackles with a downhill run style that will
break through the first sign of contact.
Quick to pick a lane and will attack
holes with vigor. Has a few long house calls on the highlight reel and can
certainly find a top gear, but isn’t the most elusive runner when he reaches
the second level and has more success powering through defenders then

he does trying to get around them.

#19 RB Waltez Clark 6-1 194 Fr **** Natl 309 0.939
Offers: UF-AU-AU-Ark-UGA-OK-MS-SCa-Tn-aTm-VU

FSU-sUM-FAU-UCF-USF-Mich-ND-tOSU-Ore-USC-PSU, etc.
Documented speed. A guy that just keeps getting bigger. He can run the full
receiver route tree
.
Also a good punt returner & kick returner.

The Gator RB Room continues to be Lay-O-Ded imoho!
What impressed me the most about the 2 FNG's is their offer lists.....

When does the 85 scholarship and 105 total have to be met. Just before the season starts? I read with these portal announcements we are at 84 and 121 now.

It sounds like some NCAA settlement might make the scholarship limit 105 soon also.

Not sure. Since they don't sign NLIs anymore and they can transfer at anytime, the number is very dynamic. For instance, last year a guy (I forget who) signed with Alabama and then transferred to UF in the spring.

The Florida Gators pulled a spectacular turnaround on the field. What Billy Napier and crew did on the recruiting trails may have been even more impressive with the flood of new recruits wanting to hop on the Gators’ bandwagon earned national recognition.

"The Gators have charted the hottest finish to the 2025 cycle of any program across the country, securing 13 commitments since Billy Napier's future was settled on Nov. 7, including seven from the ESPN 300," wrote Lederman on ESPN+.

The 2024 college football regular season has concluded with thrilling conference championship games, and now attention turns to the postseason. Beyond those that will be competing in the College Football Playoff, players face important decisions about remaining with their current teams or entering the NCAA winter transfer portal.

Portal is OPEN Dec 9th>>28th.

According to NCSA,
the NCAA Division I transfer rule changes that have taken effect in the 2024-2025 academic year include the following:

As of Nov. 21, Lagway had a 99.4 deep pass rating on throws beyond 20 yards. Before injuring his hamstring against Georgia, his 63.2% completion percentage on throws beyond 20 yards was the most accurate rate in the country. The Texas native is currently Pro Football Focus’ highest-rated deep passer, and their highest-rated true freshman quarterback. He was also named a True Freshman AA by On3. He was 5-0 as a starter when he plays the full game. (He had the Gators leading SEC-C UGly when he was injured out)

WR's Chimere Dike & Elijah Badger are both out of eligibility.
However, the Gator's will have So WR Eugene 'Tre' Wilson III returning (a rsSo in 2025), and incoming freshman Vernell Brown III, who 247Sports ranked as the 4th-best recruit in the State of Florida, and the 6th-best wide receiver recruit in the country. A consensus four-star prospect and top-10 player at his position, Brown is ranked as high as a top-five receiver in the country, according to Rivals. He is also a top-five player from Florida and the No. 34 player overall in the country.

"I'm definitely going to be involved in recruiting and the transfer portal, but the biggest thing is just trying to keep the guys that we have here,” Lagway said after the win over Florida State.

By Gators Illustrated's most-recent count, which takes into account the signing class, portal departures, players who will have exhausted their eligibility at the end of this season and those who remain on the team with eligibility, the Gators are under the SEC scholarship limit with 84 players but sit over the 105-man limit with 121 players.

Meaning, most of Florida's departures will come from it's walk-on group, but it'll have to see multiple scholarship players depart if it wants to make roster improvements via the portal. However, Napier also noted that it depends on who is even available in the portal.

Denotes Walk-on *
WR Andy Jean 6-1 184 rsFr

This kid beat Ole Miss damn near by himself. DJ needs to get on the phone to this kid.
Also just saw where DJ is trying to get the Ohio State receiver Jeremiah Smith to come to Florida

I don't get it, that some here seem to think that the Gator's WR room is empty, or is under staffed on quality. It looks to me like they are fairly loaded with experience and deep with both size, and speed.
While I wouldn't pass up on taking a top quality xfer WR, after reviewing the roster, it's not a critical need imoho.... (a partial roster WR listing)

Kahleil Jackson 6-3 215 rsJr *** - size - (injured out in 24)
Marcus Burke 6-3.75 197 rsJr **** - size

Eugene Wilson III 5-10 183 So ***** - speed - Fr All SEC & Academic HR
#11 WR Aidan Mizell 6-1.5 186 rsFr **** - speed+

24 WR Tank Hawkins 5-9.5 176 Fr **** - speed+ (6 Gms)
#28 WR TJ Adams 5-10 197 Fr **** - speed (4 Gms, redshirt)

Imcoming 2025 Recruits:

#6 WR Vernell Brown III 5-11 170 ***** - speed
#22 WR Naeshaun Montgomery 6-1 175 4.4/40 **** size with speed
#71 WR Muizz Tounkara
6-3.5 195 *** - size

While I think Wison may improve a lot with his hip surgery but none of those receivers besides him have showed much and Brown is a new recruit. We better get at least one good Pearsall or Badger type receiver out of the portal.

Dike and Badger's experience kept the young guys from getting more game experience. It was not due to the young guys lack of innate talent.

5-star Wilson was a Fr All SEC.
I expect that 5-star Brown has a good chance of being one too.
One of the FNG WR's said he came here because BillyG told him that he plays tFr if they win the job.

Personally, I'm tired of letting our new HS recruits languish due to the importing of xfers.....
I believe that BillyG can coach any and all of those 4-5 star roster guys up to speed, if they are given the practice and playing time.

IMO, the 9 guys on that above partial list that I posted have the potential to be as good or better than any WR in the portal. So lets work on the one's that chose to be Gator's from the get-go instead of the xfer one & dones.....

I see your point. Apparently there is something in the room we don’t know about.

I've read 3 articles talking about Florida's "needs" from the transfer portal and WR is mentioned as a priority - not just filling space, but trying to find a couple of experienced guys with proven production. I agree that Wilson, Mizell, Hawkins and Jackson are potentially great receivers and I like the 3 signees. But as we saw this year, injuries can decimate a position and it always helps to have quality depth. Guys like Dane Key and Barion Brown, Kentucky's top 2 receivers this year, are examples of receivers in the portal that may get Napier's attention. He did a good job bringing in Badger and Dike this year and hopefully he can duplicate that effort this year. Getting a couple of high quality linemen is a priority as well, IMO.

Well Badger and Pearsall showed right away they could play when coming here and most of the ones here for a few years haven't showed much when they had their chances. It's a new world with the portal/NIL and you can't put your team at a disadvantage by trying to please your high school recruits over improving the position.

I think he said he was staying. He will be limited mostly in the spring from his surgery.
Still something fishy with him this past year where I feel he was protecting his red shirt. Hopefully he stays but we still gotta go get a big gun to be on his opposite side if he stays.

We definitely need a proven down the field threat at minimum. That and a good SEC starting caliber OT.

Sounds like we are looking at WR Chase Sowell from E Carolina. He is 6'4 and averages 20 yards per catch. Had close to 700 yards this season.

Silver would be a nice pickup but it sounds like he is looking for too much NIL considering he isn't an elite SEC player. Unless he gets more realistic I doubt we would be the team to overpay him.
