Gators fight to the finish but fall 4-3 to SMU
DALLAS, Texas - The Florida men's tennis team dropped Friday's match against SMU 4-3. The Gators did not clinch the doubles point, but rallied in singles action to attempt a comeback. Florida moves to 4-3 on the season.
Florida secured one doubles match with Tanapatt Nirundorn and Adhithya Ganesan defeating Maks Silagy and Georgi Georgiev in a 6-3 effort. The Mustangs responded with two doubles wins to clinch the doubles point.
Henry Jefferson and Jeremy Jin battled against Louis Cloud and Trevor Svajda but ultimately fell 6-3. The third match was decided by a tiebreak between Kevin Edengren and JanMagnus Johnson and SMU's Jerry Barton and Ofek Shimanov. Despite their effort, Edengren and Johnson were not able to maintain control and dropped the match 7-6.
On the singles side, the Mustangs struck first after Georgiev defeated Edengren in a 6-4, 6-2 effort on court five. Florida responded with Nirundorn opening the scoring the column for the Gators. Nirundorn earned a 6-3, 6-4 win over Silagy.
Ganesan continued to maintain UF's momentum on court one against No. 70 Svajda. Ganesan took the first set 7-6(3) and stayed focused in the second winning 7-5.
Jefferson faced Shimanov on court three and saw his match extended to three sets. Jefferson took the first set 6-4, but Shimanov regained control in the second winning the set 6-1. Jefferson could not hold on in the third, falling 6-2.
Barton secured the win for the Mustangs with a victory over No. 54 Jin. Barton took the first set 6-2, but Jin dominated in the second taking the set 6-3. Jin couldn't hold on in the third, with Barton closing out the match with a 6-1 victory.
Johnson posted a win in his match over Cloud in the third set. Johnson earned a 6-2 first set win but Cloud responded in the second logging a 6-3 victory to force a third. Johnson trailed Cloud 3-1 before winning from the match being retired.
