Background:
- All Sports Trophy that has been existence for 30 years
- Monitors 37 sports, but only counts top 19 scoring sports at each school with the following breakdowns:
- Four of which must be baseball, men's basketball, women's basketball and women's volleyball
- The next highest 15 sports scored for each institution, regardless of gender, will be used in the standings
- UF and Stanford are the only schools to finish Top 10 in all 30 years
- UF has an ongoing 15-year Top 5 streak
- Top 5 streak is almost certainly to end.
- Top 10 streak looking likely to continue but there is some uncertainty here. 10th place last year was 1017.50. I have UF conservatively estimated around 1030, though several of these could push this closer to 1075
- Football and Basketball have been huge boosts to the numbers
- The most important program BY FAR to this trophy is Track and Field. While many of the sports have a possible 200 points (100 for each gender) like Golf, Tennis, Swimming, Softball/Baseball, Trach actually has 500 possible points, because they have an outdoor season, an indoor season, and cross country. These for many years have been huge boosts to the overall numbers, the the indoor team struggled in the Fall and the prospects for the outdoor Finals in a couple of weeks is uncertain. My understanding is we had quite a few injuries that hurt our indoor results but it seems to me even without them we weren't likely to be a Top 10 in either mens or womens. Men finished 56th (3rd the previous year) and the women finished 31st (2nd the previous year). Last year we scored an amazing 440 out of the 500 possible and this year it looks like we finish around 225-250. Impossible to make up those ~200 points from the other sports, some of which will have a hard time matching last years contribution. The Track team has carried for so long while other programs have peaked and valleyed, that its understandable it's not always going to work out in our favor. Coach Holloway is one of the greatest track coaches of all times and deserves significant leeway here to figure it out. THe SEC Track Championships are this weekend thru 8 of 21 events, Women are 4th, Men are 13th
- Tennis teams are still transitioning to new coaches. Mens team thankfully made the NCAA tournament and won its first NCAA match, while seemingly relying on younger players. It's early but I'm concerned about the future of Women's Tennis. Tennis is a sport that just a few players coming in could make a significant impact on the results, so it's hard making definitive statements about the future.
- The coach who probably has the hottest seat on campus from my perspective is the Womens Soccer Coach as she goes into her 4th season in the Fall. I would have included the Womens Golf Coach who is in her 13th season, but she has likely bought herself some time with this year's run to the Final 30 (hopefully beyond that). Kelly Rae Finley brought some stability to the WBB program but she's going into her 4th full season so it's probably time to see some slightly elevated results in comparison to her first 3 years: 19-15, 16-16, 19-18. Obviously Napier needs to continue to move the program forward. Volleyball and Tennis coaches are too new. I spoke above about concern for Women's tennis, same is true for Volleyball.
