I work in a control room for an electric utility. What concerns me about the electric car stuff is that the electric system is simply not capable of serving the type of demand that these cars will produce. It’s not a capacity shortfall, but rather the facilities are not rated for this type of load. The conductor isn’t heavy enough. The substation power transformers are not rated high enough. Some urban population centers may have facilities in some areas that could adopt this type of demand, but as a country, we aren’t close. This would take many many many years to upgrade conductor, reroute power lines and build new substations. Many electric utilities in growing population areas are running into these problems now, without huge EV uptake. This will be a major problem, and I don’t see how to make these upgrades in the time frame that politicians have set up to adopt 100% EV uptake.
It’s not a problem is an opportunity to build more plants. Don’t be a freaks of growth and progress, that’s what has made America the greatest nation on earth.
Yeah. It’s not a capacity shortfall. It’s the physical lines and structures that carry electricity from the power plant to your light bulb. It’s not rated for everyone to be plugging their car in. It takes longer to upgrade millions of miles worth of power lines than it does to build new power plants. Obviously the upgraded power line will be heavier than what it replaced. This requires different pole constructions and guy wires and anchors to keep the poles standing. So now your replacing most of the power poles for millions and millions of miles worth of new power lines. All this shit takes people who want to work. Trades have been ignored for the glamour of a college degree. There is a pretty serious labor shortage on linemen, substation and relay technicians. I think there more hurdles to this than you maybe are aware of.
Again, it sounds like an opportunity to replace the old with the new... But thank you for sharing, will be an interesting process to watch as it unfolds. Many people that drive EV's also have solar panels and are more energy independent than others that rely on the grid so to speak...

I will keep my 2022 Chevrolet Silverado Z71 LTZ with the 3.0 Diesel. I get 30MPG on the HWY, and 20 in the city. In LUXURY. I have done to well in life that I have to drive a junker.
Agree with everything that you said...but it's also a capacity shortfall. That may be the lesser issue at hand but no part of the grid is, or will be, ready in the time frame some of these politicians are setting.

And the argument of "don't fight the free market" when it's all being hugely subsidized is just one example of the general cluelessness.
Odd that any of us enjoy combustion engines, especially diesel, with the huge penalties we now pay for the privilege to own one.
I say privilege...but anyone can see the penalties for gas and diesel are nothing more than a subsidy for EV's.
The public is just plain STUPID. These IDIOTS that buy in top this EV boondoggle are the worst. It will fail before it even gets started. Does anyone know how we would pay for our roads without the federal gas tax? EV's do not contribute. So democrats will say that fossil fuel people should pay for the roads that EV drivers drive on. Who will pay for the infrastructure to add power plants to charge these POS's? EV's proponents are not smart enough to see things other than looking through their own little straw.
I heard that they will replace the gas tax with a mileage tax. The new cars will report their mileage to the tax authority
I will bet nothing like this happens for YEARS..if ever. The politicians getting paid to back this garbage will not make it a priority so that there kickbacks grow larger and more frequent

Nobody cares what poor people drove they do t have options nickel, the people with means have options and it’s clear what they are buying. I drove one, it’s the best car hands down I have ever driven. It’s not close. When the price point drops more as it will that’s one of the beauties of technology it gets better and cheaper over time increasing our standard of living. So why don’t you brace a piece of Americana and stop swinging at ghosts. Climate change is a scam, the Tessy is a modern marvel. Try and use your peanut.
