2023 Baseball & Softball Thread

Perhaps premature, but got to think that whoever rated Wake #1 & UF #2 may have gotten it right.

We will know by the end of today's games.

If Wake's offense comes alive & they send LSWho home with their tails between their legs & their "Jell-o Shot" championship somewhere up their anal cavity, so much the better.

SEC getting 3 teams & ACC 2 teams to CWS says something about competitive nature of Baseball in the Deep South.

If both Wake & UF win today; the 3 days off till the 24th means fully rested arms in the finals.
If that happens, doubt we see many hits; Pitching & Defense will be the order of the day.

With all the homeruns they have hit, doubt if either team can bunt.

FWIW
I wouldn't even TRY to bunt a 100 MPH fastball - with movement !
LOL

If LSU can take today's game, I wonder if they get gutsy and have Skenes in again to pitch the following game. Seems like a very tough call because you would definitely need him.....but if you do than you're not getting him available for the championship. Dude is like college baseball's Randy Johnson.

Hell Yes !

King,

Agree with your thoughts on Skenes - 12 Ks his last game - but they lost !
BUT
When you are in the loser's bracket you have to react & take care of the NOW !

If they win today I would definitely start him tomorrow.

If, late in today's game, LSWho has a chance to win -
I would pull Skenes out of the Bull Pen & beg him to give me one inning - 3 outs & worry about tomorrow & the Finals later.

IF you worry about the next game - you won't have one.

IF LSWho or TCU gets through today & tomorrow, there is a two day layover until the Finals.

Realize that everyone wants to play Game 1 of the Finals with their Friday Night starter -
BUT
1st you have to get to the Finals !

Same goes for Sully & the Gators - just get to the Finals & worry about the rest later.

'Cags has to follow up': Gators turn to Caglianone to advance to CWS finale

The Gators are set to take on TCU at 2 p.m. ET on Wednesday.

In the NCAA Tournament, Florida starting pitchers have earned a perfect 7-0 record with a 1.88 ERA, .215 batting average against and 72 strikeouts against just 19 walks in 57.1 innings.

The Gators have received clutch performances from Friday and Saturday starter Brandon Sproat and Hurston Waldrep while also getting the best out of relievers Cade Fisher and Ryan Slater, both of whom have made a start in the postseason and combined to throw 12 innings of one-run ball.

Now it's Cags Turn to Shine.

The sophomore southpaw hasn’t started since Florida’s postseason opener against Florida A&M on June 2.

But that will change on Wednesday with a trip to the College World Series final on the line. It’s Caglianone who was tabbed to start against TCU in Omaha.

The sophomore southpaw who leads the Gators in ERA (3.78) and batting average against (.184) on the year has clubbed nine of his 31 home runs when he was the starting pitcher and is batting .311 in those appearances.

Yep, and agree with even pulling in some relief duty, if nothing further against wf.

....tcu can really get hot at the plate, as much as anybody else, and I'm not sure they need any help....

This keeps up by the third inning we may want to get the relievers in.

Gators can't string together hits. Living on the edge considering how well TCU can hit. Hopefully our pitching holds up.

That right there is what you call classic overcoaching. Fisher was absolutely dealing. No need to take him out. Welp..lets see if we can push across a run.

It's weird.

Once again Sully is doing inexplicable choices on the 8th inning....like having neely taken out in the 8th because of too many mound visits against oral roberts.

Sully has been awful last two games. Why in the hell pinch hit bunt there?? Bunting is just an automatic out. Take yourself out of a bit inning. Unbelievable. Espcially with a guy that has been sitting all game.

Getting sick of all the media saying "first time UF is in the cws since 2018" or just now "First time UF is in the finals since 2017"

Like, it's only been 5-6 years...and one year was cancelled due to covid.....not 30 years...

Not sure how we’re winning these games. We’re 3-24 with runners in scoring position. Whatever, just keep it rolling.

I thought we hit the ball better today than the previous 2 games. Just could not string them together. Our pitching just seems to get those crucial outs when we are in trouble. When TCU loaded the bases...again...I thought no way we get out of this jam. But we did.

Just across the board, we’re making plays when we need to. In the field, at bat, definitely pitching.

From an earlier post of mine, I talked about Walton needing a pitching coach of the Rocha quality. (you couldn't get her back out of OKLA with dynimite imo) 😣

And I was wishing for a pitcher of the Lauren Haeger / Kelly Barnhill talent level to grace a coming roster.

Well, at least 1/2 of my wishes were answered it seems with the B-2-B TX 5A Champs, She's 81-0 with a Sr season 27-0 0.53 ERA, Ava Brown's UF commit... She also struck out 292 hitters and gave up just 30 walks. Brown also plays first base and does wonders at the plate. In 2022 she hit .462 with 9 home runs, 65 RBI and an a .888 slugging percentage. In the classroom, Brown posted a 3.55 GPA and she volunteers as a youth softball coach and works with the local Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Question for the board. Does Walton have a pitching coach replacement in mind yet?
Jenny Gladding Denischuk - Former Gator Player
Taryne Mowatt-McKinney - Arizona Player
Doug Gillis - Former fired VaTech Pitching Coach (iG says NO)

Very young for a coach, but someone that I'd at least consider anyway is Lauren Haeger herself.

Gators pitching has come around at the right time

Florida posted a 1.63 ERA in Regional play and 2.00 ERA in Super Regional play. The Gators have posted two shutouts in their last three games, with a 6-0 win over Texas Tech to clinch the Gainesville Regional and a 4-0 win over South Carolina to clinch the Gainesville Super Regional.

And last I saw, I believe that UF was leading the MCWS in Pitching ERA at around a 2.37 (Just eliminated TCU, holding them to 2 runs).

Besides the 3 excellent starters:
Freshman lefty Cade Fisher has stepped up as a spot starter and out of the bullpen with nine scoreless innings in his last two postseason appearances. Sophomore closer Brandon Neely has been solid on the back end for the Gators with three saves in his last three postseason chances. Neely's 13 saves overall is tied for sixth nationally.

And here's the other half of it:
HR's
Cag 31 - Leads D1 - .330
Langford 19 - 365
Rivera 18 ---- .354
Riopelle 17 -- .253
Kurland 16 -- .291
Heyman 12 - .326
---
Shelnut 7 --- .278
Evans 6 ----- .230
Teams Total 135 HR's, Team's Combined Batting Ave .291

Love the ladies we've got coming in. Ocala is the softball expert around here so he may have some insight into the pitching coach candidates.
